Hello Friends of Tom,
I thought you'd all be interested to hear that Tom has recorded an interview that will air TONIGHT - March 4, 2009 - on Am I Right?? on CJSW in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
This interview is pure DYNAMITE, and I'm sure you'll all want to tune in at 11 pm MST - check out www.cjsw.com for listening details!
If you can't listen live, PM me and I will be happy to fire you off an MP3 of tonight's show. Scharpling fans will not want to miss out!
Tune in!
Evan
-
Is that Denver time?
-
will it be archived on the station's site?
-
If you could post an mp3 on sendspace and leave a link up here afterwards, I think everyone would appreciate it. I sure would. Thanks!
-
Samir is right on this. I would listen live but we have house guests tonight.
And thanks for the heads-up, amiright!
-
If you could post an mp3 on sendspace and leave a link up here afterwards, I think everyone would appreciate it. I sure would. Thanks!
INDEED.
-
This was a ton of fun to do.
Evan and Jesse are truly hilarious.
Thanks, guys!
Tom.

Thirded. Or fourthed?
Probably ninth-ed by now.

Hey this is on right now (on my coast, I don't understand how Canadian time zones work)! Hmm, now the choice is between I Love Money 2, or your show. I choose both.
PS: Starting off with T&E's "Sports" is a good way to get me to turn down my television, great job!
-
Hey this is on right now (on my coast, I don't understand how Canadian time zones work)!
I think when it's "now" in Pacific Time it's "already" in Canadian time. This has always presented the crafty Canucks with certain temporal arbitrage opportunities.
-
That was a great interview. The value of Rush is debated. American-Canadian sensibilities come to a head. And Tom shares the riveting story of a baseball bat fight in Calgary!
-
I listened. It was great. Good job, Canadian people! I'm buying some Albertan steak in your honor. Also, they played a jaunty, mooged-up instrumental version of "Porcupine Pie" to introduce the interview. Evan and Jesse, where did you find that music?
-
Hey, thanks for listening everyone who listened! And thanks to Tom for coming on - the people of Canada are pleased with your valiant acceptance of the Barenaked Crown!
For those of you that couldn't listen, you can find a copy of the full show here:
https://www.yousendit.com/download/U0d6YUl1cTJlcEx2Wmc9PQ
As always, Tom's hilarious, so this is worth checking out. The interview starts about 10 minutes in.
Oh, and we found that copy of Porcupine Pie on the WFMU Blog, here: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/11/switched-on-bas.html
Thanks for listening everyone! And thanks again, Tom!
Evan
-
Oh, and I think I'm speaking for Jesse here when I point out that the value of Rush is UNDENIABLE!
Evan
-
thanks evan!
(ssshhh. I think i may be a member of the rush club, but don't tell anyone....)
-
I loved it!
-
We have a government regulation here in Canada called "Canadian Content" which we use to try and ensure that we properly support our Canadian artists. One of the amendments is that 60% of all radio or televisions interviews must mention either Rush or Bachman Turner Overdrive, regardless of who is being interviewed.
My mentioning those two band in this post clears me until I hit post number 77.
-
Hey, I'm listening to the show again. Tom's befuddled reaction to the "Salmon Arm Stadium" has got me thinking that it would be cool to start up a Salmon Arm/New Port Richey sister-city program.
-
I downloaded the show- but couldn't open it because "the source could not be found" :(
-
Oh, and I think I'm speaking for Jesse here when I point out that the value of Rush is UNDENIABLE!
Evan
I forgot to come back after listening to say this, but:
A. You two are surprisingly quick witted and clever while not being smug. As a result, your show does not disappoint! I will be tuning in again.
and
B. The single best moment of the whole interview was when Tom pushed the Rush issue with you guys just a little too far, and the moment briefly got tense. I almost died laughing. You have to let that go, man!
-
This was a wonderful show! I'd absolutely love to hear your other interviews!
If I can manage it I'll be tuning in live. Chances are, I can manage.
-
Yousendit says the file has reached its download limit. Can someone who has it upload it to mediafire or something?
thanks in advance
-
That was pretty fun, although the turlet talk was unsettling for sure.
-

I had the same prob. Anyone?
If someone posts it, I will totally upload to my own webbed-site for download to FOT community.
-
Very good interview. It's unsettling to hear Tom without the voice modulator.
-
I'm uploading it to my server now (if that's not ok with Evan, let me know and I'll take it down asap) @ 9:33am PST, but I'm out the door too. Should be up within 5 minutes or so I think. Download before that time and it doesn't work, you've got no room for TEARS.
HERE (http://erechoveraker.com/Am I Right__ - March 4.mp3) (right click save as etc etc)

Thanks to everyone who listened to and enjoyed the show!
Keep your ears peeled, because we're about to start podcasting the interview portions of the show and we've got some pretty fun things in the archives!
Oh, and I'm uploading the interview again for those of you that couldn't hear it the first time! If the MP3 didn't work the first time, try this link:

Awesome. Thanks for sharing!
-
That was a lot of fun. Thanks for posting this.
(For the record: the correct answer is that Calgary is the Dallas of Canada.)
-
I listened to it on my flight to Colorado this morning. So funny! Thanks heaps for sharing it.
Rush= gg/bb....priceless!
-
Thanks for the mp3 link! Enjoyed listening.
-
Loved it
-
Great interview, enjoyed all the Canadian content.
I had randomly just started listening to the archive where Tom talks about the trip to Canada that spawned the bat fight story too.
I hate to agree with JW but it took me a long time to get used to Tom's voice on the phone rather than with the modula... in studio.
-
At times he kind of sounds like Eric Wareheim on the phone.
-
I asked amiright for an mp3 of that interview ... Sent it to me in a matter of hours. LOVE IT!!! Now if I could just find the time to listen to it.
Nevertheless, thanks a TON!!!

Sorry I came to the party late, but hey, it is in faraway Canada!
It looks like the yousendit file has been downloaded too many times, and will not allow me to download it.
Any chance of a do-over?
-
I would also appreciate a re-upload of the mp3. Perhaps to a site like mediafire that doesn't have a download limit?
-
Hello friends,
Here for you is a more download links:

CANADA!
-
Awesome interview!
-
The downloads of the show are going like hot Albertan steak and pemeal bacon in a toasted everything with garlic and onion bagel from your friendly neighbourhood Tim Hortons. mmm (with herb and garlic cream cheese.)
-
This is great.
-
Hi Everyone -
Just a quick, slightly off-topic note...
Paul F Tompkins is on Am I Right?? this evening - check it about at 11 pm at cjsw.com.
As always, PM me if you'd like a copy!
Evan
-
yay! Thanks for the heads up
-
Hey, this show is great! Do you have any older episodes you wouldn't mind sharing? I'm curious to know who else has been on.
-
Hey, this show is great! Do you have any older episodes you wouldn't mind sharing? I'm curious to know who else has been on
Hey, thanks, Trinsky!
Just off the top of my head, we've had: Maria Bamford, Andy Daly, Spencer Rice, Weird Al, the Sklar Brothers, Jen Kirkman, Nikki Payne, and a few other local notables (and some other bad interviews I would prefer not to mention!) Oh! And Norm Macdonald!
Let me know which ones you'd like to hear and I'd be happy to post them!
Evan

Seconded. That was a really fun interview, excellent podcast material. All those names sound great although I don't know who Spencer Rice or Nikki Payne.
Can't wait for more Where's-Waldo-style Canada references embedded in the talk!
-
Could you post the Norm Macdonald interview? I'd love to hear that.
-
I'd like to hear these:
Maria Bamford, Andy Daly, Spencer Rice, Weird Al, the Sklar Brothers, Jen Kirkman, Nikki Payne, a few other local notables, and Norm Macdonald!

podcast! podcast! podcast! If posting is an issue, consult archive.org: http://www.archive.org/about/faqs.php#Uploading_Content

Whatever you're willing to share, I wanna hear it, including the PFT episode as I only caught the last ten minutes of it. Thanks!
-
Okay, the only ones I've got on this computer at the moment are Norm and PFT - so, enjoy these for now!

Can't wait to listen to the Norm interview. He's doing stand-up here in Toronto in April and this is very anticipation-boosting!
-
Norm Macdonald is absolutely hilarious in that interview.
-
The PFT interview is fantastic.
-
The PFT interview is fantastic.
Emphatically seconded! (PFT is made aware of Canada's Ministry of Yuks, The Royal Canadian Air Farce).
-
You've made a listener out of me.
Good stuff!
-
The Norm and PFT (which I played twice!) interviews are both great. Please let me know if a podcast appears or if you make any previous interviews available for download.
-
I just want to add to the clamor of how good these interviews are. You guys are hilarious and have great interactions with hilarious people.
-

I, too listened to the PFT twice. Not kiddin'. People just having conversations with Paul are so genuinely good and funny.
-
i would really like to hear the maria bamford episode, if at all possible. i enjoyed the paul f. thompkins inteview quite a bit. i feel like i learned a lot about canada from it.
-
I hope nobody said this but by the way Jesse is on the very funny "You Look Nice Today" style podcast Boiled Dinner. It's pretty good, I find it even better than YLNT.

-
The PFT link has expired. Could someone please re-upload it?
-
Hey,
Thanks everyone for the kind words about the interviews and the interest about them!
I've talked about this thread to the station management, and they've asked me to wait on starting a podcast - they're concerned about people getting station material from places other than the station...
However, in the next few weeks, we should be putting a bunch of our interviews up on the CJSW site - and you will all be the first to know. Jesse and I are happy that some of you are interested!
As well, tune in tomorrow night for a very VERY special episode if you can - I was really calling in to the show tonight to defend my co-host's love of RUSH - tomorrow night, I reveal my musical passion to the world.
And it's pretty funny - at least I hope so - tune in!
CJSW.com - 11 pm MST!
(Or PM me if you're at all interested in what's up the sleeve.)
-

If you need people to write letters or anything like that to get support for a podcast started (including people who do it for a living), let us know. The show is fantastic. As delicious as an Albertan Steak.
-

http://www.boileddinner.ca/
Yipes—I wasn't prepared for exactly how "You Look Nice Today" style this was at the beginning, with the extremely similar mandolin-or-whatever intro. I feared the worst, but after that it was quite enjoyable, and definitely its own thing. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
-
I finally got to the PFT show. Really, really funny.
Do all the episodes of your show consist of grilling your guests about CanCon?
-
Haha - What can I say - it becomes a crutch sometimes!
In our defense, though, guests will bring it up as often as we do!
I will admit that it's probably less a crutch than the near constant talk of Rush, though...
Speaking of which, here's our April Fools Day show: https://www.yousendit.com/download/UmNKWWV1d0F0d0d4dnc9PQ
-
Oh, that wasn't a criticism - it's funny. I quite like the idea of a show that's entirely devoted to interrogating comedians about how much they know about the Air Farce.
And I second the above request to make the Bammer's episode available! (I've always wondered if she's heard of Danger Bay...)
-

Upon further review, I realize this is probably one of those new-fangled "ukuleles", and not a mandolin, so I apologize for being a dummy. I've listened to a number of these episodes at this point, and I am OFFICIALLY A FAN.
-
Boiled Dinner was pretty hilarious from the first episode, a hard thing to say for most podcasts and radio shows. I also appreciate the quick release of the podcast, which is almost every Sunday. Compared to YLNT which you're lucky if it's every month. The guys have really made the format their own.
-
Hi everyone - I hope you're not sick of me yet, but I'm just reminding you to tune into Am I Right?? tonight!
Normally, I wouldn't post anything here, but not only do we have comic Don Wood as our guest, but it's the first time Jesse has gone a full hour without mentioned RUSH.
One for the history books...
www.cjsw.com - 11 pm.

I just wanted to say I enjoyed the Tom and PFT episodes of your radio program. I'd also love to hear the episodes with Bammer, Daly, et al.

Thanks a lot, guy(s). This will give me a few things to dig into before Thursday's Best Show podcast, which I had to settle for because I couldn't start listening to Tom until 8:20, and I don't allow myself to begin listening from the middle.

Thanks Evan! Looking forward to listening to these. I'm especially excited about the Andy Daly ones. I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode you've shared so far. I hope Am I Right podcast will be a reality soon.
-
Yeah, thanks. These are awesome!!
-
I just got off the phone with none other than Jon Wurster - it was a SUPER long, SUPER GREAT interview...
I won't be able to get it cut down for tonight's show, but definitely watch for it next week... He was great!
If there's interest, I can post the uncut interview here, too.
Also - tonight, Eugene Mirman!

Dear Evan,
Please start podcasting your show, thanks. Also, please post your uncut Wurster interview here, that would be great!
-

That's a no-brainer, Evan! Thanks in advance!

Yes. YES!

PRETTY PLEASE!

Please stop making us beg and post the unedited interview.

Please stop making us beg and post the unedited interview.
Sorry! Not trying to make anyone beg!
I haven't been back to the editing room since the interview, so I don't even have a copy of it myself!
We're putting the show together this evening, so hopefully I can post it post-Best Show tonight... It'll be worth the wait!
-
Thanks a lot, guy(s). This will give me a few things to dig into before Thursday's Best Show podcast, which I had to settle for because I couldn't start listening to Tom until 8:20, and I don't allow myself to begin listening from the middle.
Tom almost always plays music until about 8:20.
-
Hey everyone,
Here is the UNCUT version of the interview with Jon Wurster.
It is just the interview itself, no "Sports!" or intros or anything:
https://rcpt.yousendit.com/685777736/68017a777dd24a8108d68abc637e9a35
There were some technical difficulties with the actual "To Air" episode so I'm hesitant to post it here - sounds like garbage, truth be told... But you're not missing much, so enjoy this!
Evan
-
Thank you Evan!!!
-
Thanks Evan! Looking forward to hearing it.
-
Thanks! I can't wait to check this out.
-
Ha! It's so hard to hear that familiar phone voice and to try and convince yourself that's Jon Wurster himself and not one of the lunatic characters he plays. I'm only a few minutes in and it's so unsettling. And hilarious.
-
Is it possible for someone to repost the Wurster interview? The link is expired...
Thanks!

It was a fun interview. I was so glad to learn that Bishop Pablo Fontana is one of his favorite characters- mine too!
-
Thanks for the repost! I had been stuck behind a firewall out of town all week, and by the time I could get to it, it had died!
-
Just got done listening to the Wurster interview. That was fantastic.
-
Thank you for the post and re-post.
-
Thanks for the re-post!
If anyone else needs this, let me know.
BS4L!
-
That was completely awesome. Thank you again for the repost!

Thanks, everyone, for listening and for your compliments! I've been out of town for a few days, and it was nice to come back to these notes!
-
The Wurster interview is wonderful. I particularly liked hearing Wurster break down laughing, since he mostly tries not to do that when he calls the show. And, as a bonus, the interview prompted me to watch Rambocky again. It was great.
-
Any chance to re-upload the Maria Bamford / Andy Daly interviews mentioned a dozen or so posts back?
Each interview I've heard has been very enjoyable (and the Boiled Dinner podcast is pretty good too ! ).
What I like is that the interviewees sound remarkably relaxed and thus, to me, more genuine and entertaining. This may have to with the fact that the interview is for a Calgary (college?) radio station but also that the hosts are informed, interested and amusing. A rare trifecta, I'm sure.
-
I'm late to this thread, so I missed almost all the links. But I'm starring
Wednesdays at 11 on my calendar.
-
Listening now, love the Stu Hart dungeon discussion.

I feel bad for missing out on these. Is there anybody here who still has these and would be kind enough to repost them?
Actually, I've begun a "dropbox" folder of as many episodes as I can fit - if anyone would like an invite to the folder, let me know via PM.
-
I wouldn't say no.
-
I'm just finishing up the PFT episode, and I'm happy that there are so many other interviews to listen to as well. But I'm writing mainly to report that I have seen Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Margaret's Museum, Jesus of Montreal (I think that was on the list), Les Boys, Men with Brooms. Also seen: Lost and Delirious (blah), Cronenbergs galore, several Atom Egoyans, 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould (of course), Last Night (loved it), Kissed, The Hanging Garden, Cube, Waydowntown (another fave), Guinevere, Les Invasions Barbares, Ginger Snaps, Fire, Mon Oncle Antoine (which features one of my favorite examples of Canadian French ever: "Hey, Pa, un case de beans!"), and a gazillion more. True, I haven't yet seen New Waterford Girl, but I've still got Mr. Tompkins beat to hell. My forebears really should never have left Canada.
This self-indulgent post prompts me to ask whether you have any way of getting hold of a recording of The Rubber Gun, amiright? I asked if anyone on this board had a copy of this movie a while back, to no avail. Maybe I'll have more luck this time.
-
Thanks for the invite! I am enjoying the archives as we speak!
-
The Norm episode was so good. I sometimes forget how impossibly funny he is. That Saget roast is the best roast in the history of roasting.
"Now, Gilbert Gottfried is here, one of my best friends. Gilbert, when you go to the bathroom you'll see a sign that says, 'Gentlemen.' Pay no heed, go right in. There's no sign that says 'Scoundrels' on it."
Anyone know if his shows are any good? I've never watched Norm or Stan Hooper. I always got the impression that they were probably mediocre sitcoms where he does his famous "Norm Macdonald" character.
-
I don't know about his shows, but I loved Dirty Work when I was younger. I don't know if I'd still like it. Plus, I despise Artie Lange.
-
Never was a big fan of Norm McDonald. Something about him... I never connected with his style, I guess.
-
haven't listened in a while due to being busy and lack of access to archives, but i like this show. thanks for the andy daly/bamford eps.
-
Never was a big fan of Norm McDonald. Something about him... I never connected with his style, I guess.
I mostly know his standup (excellent) and his appearances on Conan and Howard Stern (excellent).
I'm ambivalent about his acting work, which is why I'm not sure about the shows.

His stay on Weekend Update on SNL was maligned by some but remain a defining moment of my comedic taste.

He was better than Colin Quinn.
-
Hey thanks everyone for the kind words!
Just a favour to ask though - I think someone is deleting files from the folder when they're done listening... Please don't do that because that's deleting them for everyone else, too!
Also there are places to find the Norm Shows quite easily if you look...
-
thanks, dudes. where do i look for the norm eps? write it backwards. i tried elgoog but it came up with gnihton.

God, I'm sorry! That was my compulsive side taking over;* I didn't realize I was affecting everyone else.
*It did again just a moment ago, when I noticed I'd quoted more of your post than necessary and so had to get back in here to delete the extraneous bits.
-
God, I'm sorry! That was my compulsive side taking over;* I didn't realize I was affecting everyone else.
No worries, Sarah! The interface can be a bit confusing - am I looking at my hard drive or a mirror of the webspace*? - so I make the same mistake all the time.
Also, I'm just curious - are people only listening to the interviews with people they know, or has anyone listened to any of the Canadian/Calgarian "stars"? I have a bunch more with local comics and I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in hearing them...
*I'm not sure those are the correct computer words!
-
I plan to work my way through them all. And I love Canadian fare, so I'd be very happy to hear the local comics. Tell me, though, why do you distinguish between Canadians and Calgarians?
-

Good question - and I'm not sure why I did!
It's funny though, the PFT/Tom/Wurster interviews and the like tend to more steeped in Canadiana, if only because we tend to like to goof on the stuff that sounds more far-fetched to the "come-from-aways" whereas the local folks have grown up with it, so it doesn't get as good a rise out of them!
-
New show featuring an hour with Todd Glass should be in the folder by the end of day!
-
I want that! Are you still going to upload it (no sign of it yet)?

Sorry - I've been on vacation and less than prompt with this, but it should be there now.
Todd was really great, so I encourage you all to check it out!
-
what's that remixed version of tim and eric's sports! from? great glass interview.
-
I don't know who Stephen JK is but fuck him because he deleted everything in the folder. What an asshole.
-
Yeah, I just noticed that the folder was empty. I thought it was because My Dropbox was full (I've been getting notices warning me of that and had no idea what to do about it).
In Stephen JK's defense, though, he might just have made a mistake, like I did a while back. If he's not reading this thread, he could easily have no idea that deleting files from his folder eradicated everyone else's, too.
-
Has anyone tried restoring these? If you go to recent events and click on the names you go to a page that lets you restore the deleted archives. I'll see how many I can get back?
-
How does one do that? I copied a whole bunch of the interviews to my hard drive and could re-up them if I knew how.
-
Don't worry about it, all files should be up for all members on the dropbox. When someone deletes something it only deletes the file from the folder but it's still in the system. All I had to do was click undelete for all the files. CRISIS AVERTED
-
I will stand down, then.
-
I don't know who Stephen JK is but fuck him because he deleted everything in the folder. What an asshole.
Sorry jouster and to anyone else on here looking for those files. I honestly thought they were local files on my hard drive. It wasn't a malicious act.
-
Tighten up.
-
Sorry for the outburst, but when I saw someone had deleted every file in one fell swoop it ticked me off. Good work on the recovery, breadharrity; good thing Dropbox has that feature (most similar services do not).
-
Dropbox might be wise to warn people off this particular path. It's an easy mistake to make.
-
I almost made the same mistake because I didn't know better. I checked the Dropbox forums and learned that enabling read-only access is in their list of future enhancements. Yay future!
-
what's that remixed version of tim and eric's sports! from? great glass interview.
That is a remix provided by a really terrific guy named Morgan from a Calgary band called Azeda Booth - he's a big T&E fan, and he had heard of us so he just went ahead and did that up for fun... It's a pretty nice take on it - thank for noticing!
And thanks for the kind words on the interview!

Wow - thank you bread! You're a life saver! I've been away for a bit, and when I saw you all noticing that the files were deleted, my first thought was off all the re-uploading I'd need - so THANK YOU for mopping up that little mess! I'm using the web interface, so it would have taken days to get everything back up...
THANKS!

Put it in the dropbox or it doesn't exist.
-
Does anyone here understand Dropbox well enough to know how I can make room in my folder? We know deleting files is out, but surely there's some way to remove from a full folder stuff one has already heard so that new stuff can be added. Right?
-
I don't know of a workaround. Even if amiright?? were to pay the monthly fee and get a 50GB account, I think all of us subscribers would still be limited to 2GB.
Of course, this will be a non-issue once the official podcast is unleashed.
-
Ah. So at this point he'd have to remove interviews in order to add new ones. I have no control at all.

Oh! What an exciting development! I don't know what I would do with myself if episodes of this came out the same time as a Boiled Dinner episode. I guess listen to one first, then the other?

For sure - you can give it the heave-ho!
Also, we'll be working some "classic" episodes into the podcast feed, as well, so you won't need to worry about missing any of those, either!
-
Speaking of "Classics," this week's podcast will include a re-broadcast of our interview with Norm Macdonald - I should say the famous interview with Norm (because he brings it).
If you haven't subscribed or listened to us yet, this is the third best opportunity YET!
(First and second, of course, are Scharpling and Wurster - and they will be airing soon enough!)

Hello Everyone,
Since I know there are some Am I Right?? fans on here, I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries to say that tomorrow evening will see the 2009 Funding Drive edition of the show!
That's right, not unlike WFMU, CJSW is a listener supported station, and this is our week to beg.
I will say no more, except for tune in tomorrow evening at 11 pm MST at www.cjsw.com - and if you like the show and have a few bucks to spare, we'd be happy to use'em to fight the good fight in community radio...
OH - AND SPECIAL GUESTS.
I hope this wasn't too annoying!
-
I've just added this episode to the podcast feed - including SPECIAL GUEST CALLER TOM SCHARPLING.
This is Tom at his lewdest and crudest... If he wasn't doing me such a big favour, the Kid would've been GOMPED.
In all seriousness, thanks again for coming on Tom - it was very much appreciated!
-
Hi everyone, me again.
Not only will we have Paul F. Tompkins on the show next week, BUT this week, on the broadcast ONLY, we have a sneak preview of Freak Wharf.
We will only play this bit on the radio - it won't be podcast - so get an early taste of it, tonight, at 11 pm Mountain time - www.cjsw.com

Nice! Is it a new PFT interview or a re-broadcast of the previous one (which was amazing)?

No, it will be brand new! I am REALLY looking forward to it - we're trying the Tompkins300 for Calgary and I hope the interview will complete the push to bring him to town!
-
Hi everyone,
Just got off the phone with Tom.
Next week's Am I Right?? is going to be EPIC.
-
Okay, it's a done deal - tonight's Am I Right?? will feature Tom - airing tonight at 11:00 pm at CJSW.com (or at 90.9 FM, if anyone on here happens to be in Calgary!)!

Thanks again from coming on, Tom!

Very fun interview! Just for that, I'll have to revisit Calgary. Great town. And I really need to raid the cassingles aisle at Recordland.
EDIT:
oooh, tasty cassingles:

..and lots of vinyl too...

I loved hearing the more casual Tom in longform, and the AmIRight?? guys are really entertaining. It's hard to hear Jesse though. He should literally step closer to the mic.
...I've seen that George Stromboliollioplis guy on MuchMusic(?) years ago when I was staying in Vancouver.. he was trying to go for this Billy Joe from Green Day meets Riki Rachtman thing. I had a bad vibe about him from the beginning. I would choose Red Green or even his creepy nerdy sidekick Harold over Strompolouboulboulis.

Tell me those are your pictures of Recordland. Talk about an institution!
And thanks so much for listening and passing along those nice words - I'm glad you liked it!
As for Strombo - I thought American's would remember him for his stint on "The One" back in the summer of whenever...

Yeah, those guys have a great vibe w/Tom ... also, I just want to say if I had my way, I would so have a Newfoundland dog ... that's a nap-taking dog right there.

Those are my Recordland pics indeed, when I visited Calgary in August 2007. The whole set should hopefully be up on flickr if you search "recordland" or "recordland Calgary"
I have to admit though that Recordland is jaw dropping to be inside. Find amazing stuff? Not so much. Find reasonably priced and good condition stuff? Impossible, sadly. And I just googled this place to see if it was still around, and I found this site called Calgary 2.0(?) and, well, let's just say the user reviews of Recordland kinda puncture the Every Canadian Is Nice balloon. I found more stuff the 5 minutes I was at Sloth than the hour I was at Recordland.
And I feel bad for slighting Red Green. He's probably a good guy, but he triggers that sickly feeling of housesitting for one's grand uncle, pre Internet, pre iPhone. There's a stack of Reader's Digests and golf mags from three years ago, and that's it. The Red Green show feels like that.
-
Oh, it's OK to criticize Red Green. He's awful. Strombolopoulos, too.
-
I always assumed Red Green was a kids show. Maybe because the last time I laughed at it, I was a kid.
-
BTW I think the podcast feed is still busted - at least the new ones aren't showing up in Itunes for me - anyone else?

Nice Tom story detail: Neil Peart's first edition copy of "The Fountainhead" in his motorcycle's saddlebag.
Nice Tom: giving "old-time" American advice to the young Calgarians (sp?)

Congratulations on two things. First, congrats on a great, funny show per usual. Secondly, kudos on achieving possibly the most annoying sound to kick off a radio show/podcast ever.
-
@TacoSmith - thanks - glad you liked it!
@Hugman - Thanks and Thanks. I'm taking it you mean Jesse's tribute to Don Pardo off the top? I think that's how he sees it...

Yes, the part that sounded like the "most annoying sound in the world" that Jim Carrey makes in Dumb and Dumber.
-
Is that every single cassingle that still exists?
Close! It's definitely every secondary cassingle hit, with a few major hits peppered in. I had a closeup shot. Which of these did you own?

I think you should take your beef to the Am I Right?? listener hotline.
-
Tom Scharpling comedian, radio host and amateur geographer. SO good.
Also, recordland is fun to go to, but I only find good stuff when I am searching for sound effects records.
-
I finally listened to it and was actually fairly disappointed that Tom made light of the utterly corrupt, community-destroying, eminent-domain-for-private-gain boondoggle that is the construction of an arena in Brooklyn for the Nets. Tom, if you look closely at this issue at all, you'll see that zoning restrictions on the height of this atrocious taxpayer ripoff are a long, long way from the worst thing about it.
-
I have not looked closely at this issue at all. So my apologies for not hitting the points you wanted me to hit. I didn't hit them because I don't know them.
Tom.
-
Sneak preview of tomorrow night's show...
[There's supposed to be a picture of me and Jon Wurster but I can't get it working.]
Either way, tune into cjsw.com at 11 pm MST tomorrow to here - or check out cjsw.com/podcasts!
-
The podcast is working in iTunes again. And just in time for a great episode, apparently!
-
Just started working in my iTunes! I can't wait to listen to about a hundred of them!
-
I just subscribed, too, and see that you did a show with Jono! I worked on Jonovision for about 5 years, and have since lost touch with Jonathan. I am really looking forward to listening to this one.
-
Bryan, I think you are in for a treat. Among (Canadian) people my age, that Jono episode gets the best reviews. He's been around forever, doing fun stuff and he's so open and generous in this interview that it was a serious treat to do and (I've heard) to listen to.
-
Hi everyone. Me again.
Our interview with JW is up: http://www.cjsw.com/programming/show_details.html?id=70
It was exciting to have him in the studio and I think it turned out very well. I hope you do, too.

I have listened to several episodes now, and I have to say you guys are great. Excellent show!

Am I right?? is a great podcast. Sorry I came into it so late. It's worth it just to hear Canadians say the word "sorry".

Thanks waltkellysghost. Your compliments are much appreciated!

I just finally got a chance to listen to the Jon Wurster in-studio interview and it was fantastic. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! We'll try our best!

Hey Gang,
Just a quick note that I will keep mercifully short for everyone...
Our station, CJSW, is in the midst of our annual Funding Drive and TONIGHT is the big night for Am I Right?? - between 11 and midnight MST, we'll be hosting OUR special FUNDING DRIVE EDITION of Am I Right??
We've got some great, rapidfire guests lined up for the night, including Andy KINDLER! Kyle KINANE! Go SUPEREGO! Rory SCOVEL! Graham CLARK! Simon KING!
This in addition to some great CJSW AND Am I Right?? swag - including T-Shirts for the show and the station AND a Funding Drive CD featuring original comedy developed by Jesse and myself. (60 for the CD and a CJSW T or 85 for the CD, CJSW T AND Am I Right?? T)
So, if any of you appreciate our work and have a few extra coins jingling in your podcast, CJSW would appreciate the support so that we can keep the place running for the year. Our overall goal is $200,000, to keep us in all equipment and tower fees that we need, along with a little put aside to upgrade us from 4000 W to 20000 W (so we can be heard world wide!)
Please - call 403-220-5000 if you can, between 11 and midnight to give us a hand and get some cool swag OR if you cannot, but are interested, please email me at amiright AT cjsw DOT com, and I will put you down for whatever you're willing to share!
Thanks so much everyone for listening!
Evan
PS. Tom if this is inappropriate, I understand if it gets removed.

Just a head's up - we're in re-run season on Am I Right?? and tonight at 11 pm MST at cjsw.com, we're re-airing Tom's first appearance, dating back to March 2009. Tune in if you can or wait for the podcast later this week - www.cjsw.com/program/amiright (http://www.cjsw.com/program/amiright)!
This is a stone cold classic episode, including a discussion of One Week, which is not clouded by 4 loko. You CANNOT miss this.
www.cjsw.com (http://www.cjsw.com) - tonight, stream it!
-
Hi all - just a quick heads up... Jesse and I have been spending the past couple of months putting together a long form comic documentary - which sounds EXCITING I KNOW - about a topic that is sure to fascinate you all, which I can't get into here.
However, what I can get into is that Jon Wurster was a huge help to us with this, contributing a hilarious character that makes up the better part of about 10 minutes on the show. Outside of that, we have tons of hilarious other characters, including one voiced by Nick Flanagan, to make up the rest of this hour.
I'm proud of what we put together, and Jon is really hilarious in it, so I hope you will all check it out.
We're live to air at 11 pm MST on October 19 on CJSW FM in Calgary - or online at http://www.cjsw.com (http://www.cjsw.com). Then we'll throw it to our podcast on Friday morning - http://www.cjsw.com/programs/amiright (http://www.cjsw.com/programs/amiright)
Check it outs!
-
Best documentary ever. To blow the lid off of the Wright Brothers conspiracy takes a lot of guts, and I'm glad it's finally been done. Spread the truth.
-
I listened to this this morning. Lots of really funny moments, made me laugh. I'd love to hear more radio mockumentaries.
-
Thanks guys. We've been taking a lot of heat for just telling the truth on this I'm happy that people are responding to it. Those American Wrights are vicious.
Boogdish - here's another similar one we did: http://cjsw.com/program/amiright/april-wine-retrospective (http://cjsw.com/program/amiright/april-wine-retrospective)
-
That was great! "Space, there's nothing up there. That's why they don't call it full"
So did you guys write it? I was hoping for some credits at the end.
-
Hey thanks woodandiron - that's very nice of you!
I always wonder how to do credits for these things without breaking the "reality" of the show - the best I could come up with was listing everyone's names in the blog post and the id file on the podcast.
But, here's how we do these things, well, this and the April Wine one. Jesse and I do a rough sketch of the character's we're looking for and, maybe, some very loose plotting. Then, when we nail down who plays each of the characters, we give them a couple of lines outlining who they are and their general points of view and maybe any important plot points they need to know for the thing to cut together in a way that makes sense.
Then, the day before we taped them, we give them a list of questions that we're going to ask their character, based on how we think they should fit into the story. Some people prepare a bit, others don't. (I almost prefer they don't, because I'm looking for spontaneity.) Using these questions as a guide, we record an interview. We're not necessarily wed to the questions, and when someone has come up with a particularly fun vein of answers, I'll make up and ask additional questions - this lets us stay spontaneous and have a bit of fun and really squeeze everything we can out of the interview. Seriously - these guys were all so great and funny it was a lot of fun seeing what we could come up with. I really like this way of doing it because it lets everyone bring something different to the table, and people can play to their own strengths and really make the thing their own.
From there, we edit down from like 8 or 9 hours of interviews to give you the show you just listened to. I'm really happy with it, and, like I said, it's all a credit to the cast because they're the ones that are pretty much just hanging their funny off just a clothesline that we hang.
Terrible metaphor.
Anyway, thanks for listening and thanks for the nice words!
-
Big news coming from Jesse and I at Am I Right?? - the comedy show I've been doing at CJSW in Calgary for the past couple of years - and I hope we can ask for a tiny favour from everyone! (There's always a catch.)
The show has been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award, for Best Radio Program. Now, most of you probably have not heard of this award until just not, but trust me, it's like the Junos or the ESPYs for the Canadian comedy community. We've been selected by a panel of comedians and producers for the nomination and we're pretty proud that we're on the docket for this award, especially considering our competition - This is That and The Debaters on CBC, and Anything Goes, an XM Satellite Radio program. Three shows with real staffs, full time positions, multiple writers and nation-wide coverage. Not bad for something that Jesse and I have been pulling together on our own, in our spare time - not without help from the CJSW community, of course.
Anyway, now that we've been nominated, we need to beat the other shows in a popularity contest to win the award. I think we have a chance at winning this award, especially if everyone could please take a second to vote for us. While we probably have a small fraction of the listenerships of all of those shows, I'm not sure their listeners are necessarily the type that are going to get out and vote. They have a lot of people listening, sure, but a lot of those listeners aren't as likely as you folks to have as much invested in the radio that they like and support.
So, what we're asking is that everyone could please take a few minutes to swing over tohttp://www.canadiancomedy.ca. Once there, please register as a public voter and vote for Am I Right?? in the category of Best Radio Show or Clip. And after that, please ask everyone you know to do the same! Ask your friends! Tell you partners, husbands, wives, children and roommates! It'll only take a minute or two, and then you can relax and know that you've done a good thing.
Voting closes the end of July, so there's a lot of time to start moving a bunch of votes! With your support, I think we can do this!
