Title: Fahntasy Baseball
Post by: scratchbomb on March 12, 2009, 02:06:46 PM
Anyone interested in joining a Fahntasy Baseball league? I started one and have a few takers, but I'd like to hit 12 teams and right now I'm stuck at 6. It's not at all serious--novices totally welcome--but it's more fun the more people sign up, and I think I can trust FOTs to conduct themselves in a reasonable manner. Just didn't want to make the league public and invite total strangers, 'cuz that's when the crazies come out.

I planned on an online draft next Monday, but I can push it back if it's a problem for any potentially interested parties. If you're interested, click on the link below. Password to join is scratchbomb.

I'm interested, but I've never done fantasy sports before.  How involved would I have to be?

I'll join. I've played fantasy baseball on Yahoo the past three years. I'm just not very good at it.

You draft a team, and you set up lineups every day. Then you cross your fingers and wait for millionaires you'll never meet play well. That's pretty much it. Smack-talk is optional.

Being good is far from a requirement. I've commished leagues before, and done everything from won first place to totally turfed out.

Hello, fake baseballers. You should get an email notice about this, but I've moved the live online date from 3/16 to Sunday, 3/22 at 4:30 (Eastern). A couple of people told me the original date/time was troublesome, so I think this should allow more people to participate. If this new date/time is a problem, reply here or email and we'll see what we can do (we = me).

I pre-ranked a bunch of people (none of whom that great), but is it possible to jack up your draft?  By say, not drafting a second baseman, etc?  Or does the Yahoo Computer stop you from this?

From what I understand, if you don't draft live, the computer will pick whoever's next on your list, regardless of your team's positional needs.

But if I draft live, will it allow me to screw things up?  Trust me, I need to worry about this.  I am prone to end up drafting like 15 catchers or something.

While it generally does pick whoever is next on your list, I do believe it takes into account positional needs.  I've had a few auto-drafts where I had a lot of players listed above RP but it drafted the RP ahead of higher-ranked players at other positions to fulfill the roster requirements.  You're definitely always better off doing the live draft if possible.

That's liable to happen to anybody. I always wind up getting like one too many of one position out of panic or oversight during the draft.

I wouldn't sweat it too much; you can always drop guys later and pick up free agents, or work out a trade with somebody who'd in the same boat as you.

I'd recommend 6 teams minimum for a league, but I think you could get away with five if you don't want to do head-to-head.

I'd also recommend a live online draft (just think it's more fun, personally); weekends work best for everyone, usually.

The season starts 4/6, so you'll probably wanna set up pretty soon.

As for the Yahoo league, the main thing I need to do is (1) sit back and (2) make sure my pitching staff, as a whole, gets enough innings?

With some opportunities for trades and stuff mid-season?

I'm really exciting about the fontasy (my preferred spelling) baseball thing, but the main reason I've never done it is that I'm confused about what, exactly, you actually do.

On another point, anyone here ever play Strat-o-Matic baseball?  It seems like a combination of dungeons and dragons and baseball stat geekery, but somehow nerdier than either of those two things.

I admit that the main reason I'm doing this is to force myself to keep track of the Rockies and Phillies throughout the season...though my new subscription to mlb.tv with its condensed games will definitely help with that.

Pretty much, you just have to make your lineups every day. For example, make sure you don't have someone starting at 1B that day who's not actually playing that day. Or make sure your ace pitcher is in the lineup when his rotation spot comes up. But yeah, that's pretty much.

I never played stratomatic, but that's what I always heard about it. There's a great book by Alan Shwarz, "The Numbers Game", that's all about the history of stats in baseball. Its basic premise is that, even though a lot of Joe Morgan-types think stats "ruin" the game, they've been a part of it since the beginning, and have actually helped popularize it. He also talks about stratomatic and other proto-fantasy games, and how they helped create the stat nerds of today like Bill James and co.

So, every player that is not currently in position "BN" counts for me?  Like, I just have to make sure that every player I want to count for me is assigned a position in my roster-- 5 pitchers active at once, 9 fielders (I guess I get a utility player/"DH" as a "fielding" position)?

By this time next year I'll be making spreadsheets based on the Baseball Prospectus and shit.  But for now, dumb questions.

I think you would make it a total of eight teams for Matthew S' league, which is a respectable number.  I am ok with any type of league - if it were AL or NL I would prefer NL as well, but don't want someone to miss out on drafting players from an AL team if they favorite team is from that league.  I'm happy with whatever Matthew S decides.  Season starts in a week, so let's get the ball rolling!

sorry for the back to back to back posts - just thought I'd mention that I looked into the espn draft page - the main questions seem to be roto or head-to-head scoring, and type of draft.  I've never done a true roto league before, but if I understand it correctly it might be the best option if we end up with an odd number of teams.  A live auction would be fun to, but given the short time left before the league and availability of people and length of time for an auction draft to occur, might not be feasible?

Thoughts, questions, concerns?
Title: Re: Fahntasy Baseball

I was just trying out ESPN's league create settings.

One key apparent difference visavis Yahoo is that you need to know the exact # of teams when you are creating the league....

SO, everyone interested please PM me your email address ASAP.

I'm thinking a roto NL only league.  As this is new and experimental, I thought we'd try out a 6x6 scoring, with OBP instead of AVG and add in least K (hitters) and Holds for P.

If consensus prefers otherwise, I am certainly flexible.

(If I have a chance later on, I will PM everyone who indicated interest to let them know about this message...)

The Mets have a habit of discarding their most successful managers (see also: Davey Johnson). What Bobby V was able to the 1999/2000 Mets was pretty amazing. They had one sort-of ace and totally anonymous outfield.

I have played classic Rotisserie for so long that when I entered Gilly's league last year, the whole year passed before I could make heads or tails of it. I would get guys hurt, and I would try to DL them, only to learn 2 or 3 weeks later that I had clicked the wrong button, and I would look up the help, and still just never figured it out.

Despite looking like a buffoon in that league, I am entering year 25 in one of the oldest leagues in the country, and generally do quite well there (I have won it twice, and been in the top 4 (money positions) 12 other times.) But that Yahoo thing just puzzled the hell out of me.

Plus, I am all-NL only. I don't know Derek Jeter from Michael Jeter.

It just means a player MIGHT not play, rather than get on the DL. For example, Santana was listed as day to day, but he pitched this afternoon (and won).

Our live draft is Saturday in Nashville. It normally takes about 10 hours. It's like Christmas day to me.

We are NL only, and can retain up to 15 players from the previous year. I currently have Cody Ross, Lastings Milledge, Chris Ianetta, Heath Bell, Jon Rauch, and (the cryptkeeper) Jamie Moyer. The best player available (according to my evaluations system anyway,) is Hanley Ramirez. He's worth $19, when the entire 23-player team budget is only $65.

If moi joins my team will be
The Pud Pullers
'cause they will always cum with the wood and know how to handle those balls.

They're, of course, named for moi.

Stay on groovin' safari,

Yahoo doesn't seem to be "counting" Sunday's Phillies/Braves game.

What did I tell you about Yahoo? It's Sportsline or nothing, baby.

We're using ESPN and so far, no major compaints (right?).  The online auction went pretty smoothly and much more quickly than live auctions I've done.

Are these details true?  15 keepers for a 23 players team (and only $65 bucks total?)

I'm very curious about this league...

I could talk about it forever! We use the original Rotisserie rules, that require

a) all players from one league

b) 23 players for NL teams

c) $260 total team bankroll (but some of us couldn't swing that every year, being teachers, damn it to hell, so we cut it down to 65 quarters)

The first year, we did it by hand! Took about 6-7 hours each to figure the stats for ONE OTHER TEAM. Then we hired a service that provided weekly summaries. Switched to Internet based service, with instant updating in 2001.

We are 12 teams; 9 teams have the original owners from 24 years ago. 7 owners have attended every minute of every draft. I am one of those proud owners.

Man, I'm so jealous of your league.  The longest I could get any of my friends to commit to something like that was 2 seasons.

Yeah, that's pretty awesome. My keeper league has been together for 8 years missing one original because he couldn't play anymore since he took a job with the Red Sox. Every year I think we're going to lose somebody and it's all going to fall apart but we're still going strong.

I have Lastings Milledge too, from the auction league - I have only seen him play maybe one televised games over the past couple years, do you think he is going to turn it around?  My team stinks, and I need help.

I only kept Lastings because I had him for a quarter (with a 23-man team max of $65), so if he steals 10 bases, that's a bargain.

I have a team now; I fired out on all cylinders on draft day, taking 5 of the first 8 auctioned players (Alfonso Soriano, Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez, Francisco Rodriguez, and Brandon Webb.) Now Webb's on the DL, and worse, his coach has given him an enthusiastic vote of confidence.

Here's my team

You have a lot of good position players, Dave. I think Dobbs, Hinske, and Ross are good "under the radar" type players. Aside from Webb and K-Rod, the pitching seems to be a bit suspect, though.

Jiminy Christmas, my team stinks.  I'm fine with losing games because of normal suckiness:  I deliberately chose lots of Rockies, which is not really a winning strategy.  But my pitching roster can't hit the minimum number of innings half the time.  Oh well.  Next year, I'm playing for keeps.

I asked a friend to sign up and he basically put his team on autopilot on Scratchbomb's league.  Naturally, his team kicks ass.

My team sucks, too, and sadly, it's mostly due just to Jamie Moyer and Micah Owings.

That's always the way. Like the guy who gets dragged to the track and hits a trifecta or something.*

*know nothing about horse racing

My team sucks, too, and sadly, it's mostly due just to Jamie Moyer and Micah Owings.

I'm surprised Owings is struggling. Wonder how long before they turn him into an outfielder, a la Rick Ankiel.

Anyone up for a hockey league?

I figure I don't need to bother setting up a new thread unless anyone actually is!

Feel free to PM.

Anybody up for a league with a fairly small time commitment? I need owners, and outside of ranking your players initially for the computerized draft, and checking periodically to see if you have anyone that's injured, it will not take scads of your time. Here's the note I sent to my (expired) league members.

_____

I am conducting a low-maintenance, classic Rotisserie scoring, all NL, draft from sorted list. I need 11 other teams. If you are interested, please send me your email as soon as possible. The draft will be generated next Saturday morning, but I leave town for a week Tuesday night, so need to set this up before then. Let's at least pretend to keep some form of this thing going; if you really want to go low-workload, you can just use ESPN's suggested rankings. Let me know as soon as you can; would love to maintain some sort of relationship with you guys for as long as possible.

If you want in, send your primary email address to me at

gaughin@comcast.net

Your pal,

dave

If you still have open slots I'm always up for another team.

The combination of pitchers going way too early (Seriously, Lincecum and Halladay above Pujols?) and an autodraft system that didn't adjust to that left me with a DL'ed Chris Young as my ace.  Ouch. Plus, I guess I didn't move Rollins and Beltran far enough down my list...

I can't imagine who might have extra pitchers.

Actually, you make me feel a little dumb. My top ten was Halladay, Lincecum, Haren, Hanley Ramirez, then Pujols, Santana, Wainwright, Ted Lilly, Ryan J Braun, Trevor Hoffman. Of course, I AM in 11th place.
