I sometimes feel I may be the only person on earth who absolutely cannot stand the Boosh.

I'm sure many can't stand it.  You just hang out with the wrong crowd.

I think the anti-Boosh sentiment is pretty strong in hipper UK circles.

We may not be as sensitive to its more annoying properties here. But also, in my experience, the UK has a much shorter cycle of hype>appreciation>backlash than we have here in N. America - which is not to suggest that JBillington's irritation with the series is anything less than sincere.

I genuinely thought it was racist when I watched it and the haircut on that one guy makes me sick. You know the one I'm talking about. British people, I support your comedy, but stop trying to shove this one on me!

That slipped by me - what about it was racist? (My wife says she thinks Tim & Eric is racist against white people, and she kind of has a point.)

and the haircut on that one guy makes me sick. You know the one I'm talking about.

Yes. Yes I do. But I think his haircut is adorable.

Admittedly I was a bit drunk at the time I watched these and it was a few whiffens past, but that magical voodoo man in black face from one of the episodes really hit me the wrong way, particularly the horribly offensive stereotypical black-cent. You may have to look it up to know what I mean. Obviously I still hold something of a grudge, mainly because I expressed this opinion publicly and now have been painted into a corner by my own words.

I should point out that this character was an isolated incident from of the 3-4 episodes I saw, but it just struck me as super racist, much in the same way that British people can be 100 times more ignorant than the most ignorant American about any culture outside their own, yet manage to make it seem amusing and old-timey instead of offensively ignorant. (See also: The Golliwog episode of Extras, even though that didn't bother me nearly as much, because Extras was also funny).

As to the hair, what can I say. Seattle is also full of hipster scum, who are not at all adorable. Also, I feel old, and the music is too loud, hippy.

I do remember it now. And, yeah, it seemed racist to me, too.

I heard more racist stuff in 2 years in Britain than I did in 30+ years in N. America. It's crazy - especially because it's a national hobby there (and in Canada, too) to make fun of backwards Americans.

I saw a preview the other night and I am pretty sure I'll share those sentiments.

I'm not sure whether Britain is more racist than the U.S. or merely less politically correct.

I think the show is referencing London specifically most of the time and the characters are taking the piss out of that, I am not sure its racist.

On racism, I had the misfortune of hearing a colleague talking about how “the japs beat the US in baseball” today.  What is this WWII?

the skinny jeans on that one guy disturb me.

I've lived long enough to see a trend come around, man the years keep coming.

I could not have been more wrong about this show. What a jerk! After I gave it a chance, it turned out I was the prejudiced one. I'm sorry!

The thing I like about it, compared to a lot of other British shows, is that it doesn't have a bit of cynicism to it.

I'm glad you saw the error of your ways, RJ.  I see that next week season 1 starts, the best of the three, in my opinion.  You have treats in store.

It is both less racist and more politically correct. I'm glad to clear that one up.

I strongly disagree. I often heard Brits lamenting "political correctness gone mad" in their country. But then, I also often heard openly racist/sexist commentary of a sort that I've never heard in North America. I have no doubt that it's more p.c. than it used to be, but it just isn't in the same league as North America.
Title: Re: Mighty Boosh coming to Adult Swim in April
Post by: Sarah on May 05, 2009, 10:02:45 AM
But don't you think North America all too often uses political correctness as a Band-Aid (of the fancy, decorative variety) to cover up the ugly, festering, pus-filled ulcers of racism and sexism bubbling away underneath?

only seen a couple of eps so far, but I like its wanton silliness (as opposed to the arch cleverness I usually associate with British comedy) and its refusal to explain any of the rampant weirdness contained within its universe.

in re: racism/non-PC-ness in Eng-uh-land, i don't know if they're more racist per se. but they definitely say things on British TV that would get someone suspended or fired here in the US. I remember seeing a episode of Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson said he couldn't drive a Korean-made car because "they eat dog!" Even more surprising to my (American) ears, the large studio audience laughed heartily rather than gasped. And that this was not edited out for a showing on BBC America.

Yeah, maybe p.c.-ness is just a band-aid sometimes.  The p.c. movement definitely didn't end racism, sexism, etc. But I'll take p.c.-mandated but insincere respectfulness over old-school, openly racist hostility.

I think The Boosh is racist towards Coconut people.  They're portrayed as stick-like, and lifeless.

Sarah, what's your take on racism in Italy?

I won't say my view, but I will note that I recently heard a "woman on the street" interview with an elderly Italian woman who advocated lining up all Romanians and shooting them with machine guns.

Well, it was twenty-five years ago, but, truth be told, I was so preoccupied with my job when I was there that I barely took note of anything else.  I can report that there were only white people where I worked, which is probably significant.  But in terms of actual racist statements, the only group I ever heard bad-mouthed--aside from Americans, of course--was the Gypsies.

The Romani people have it tough in Europe right now. It's probably worst in Italy, where they are de facto treated like the scum of the earth and are more or less forced to live in ghettos. The Czech Republic is also treating its Roma population just slightly better than jews and other minorities were treated during WWII - czech out (sorry) this story (http://www.economist.com/world/europe/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13579124) in The Economist for some ugly details. We'll soon have straight up pogroms against Roma, if they're not happening already.

According to a friend of mine who grew up in Prague and is very involved in what's happening to the Czech Republic post-communism, the whole country is on its way to fascism (and/or implosion, whatever's worse). Which, of course, brings it all back to Italy. (I'd go so far as to say that Italy as a country, as a state, is beyond redemption at this point - the whole governing body is so corrupt it's not even funny. They're fucked, basically.)

So... Boosh, eh?

Yeah - this has gone way off topic. Sorry about that. But to continue for a moment: in my opinion, the key difference between Europe and North America is that there's a deep-rooted sense of ethnic nationalism in Europe. Most people in North America are more prepared to modify their understanding of who can be a "real" American or Canadian.

I'm glad that Adult Swim is getting into all this UK stuff. I've been saying for years that there's an audience for it in the U.S. who have been neglected by the domestic tv industry.

When a friend of mine, an American of Neapolitan stock, lived near Turin, some of his friends considered him a different "race."

Boosh.

Oh, yeah, that was big in Milan when I was there (and no doubt still is).  One of the guys at the magazine was from Naples, and he took a lot of the kind of ribbing that you grit your teeth and bear because you have to work with your tormenters every day.  In fact, because he was from a posh family, he often took part in the bashing, as long as it was directed at the right class.

I watched the first 3 Mighty Boosh episodes tonight. I'm feeling like the only one of my friends who just found it mildly funny. Same thing when I watched Flight of the Conchords - I end up giving the characters obligatory/courtesy laughs because there is an indie bent to the whole thing and they look and dress like people I'd hang out with. After a couple episodes, though, I realize the jokes and quirkiness just feel strained. I don't know what wrong with me. Does it change or get better after the first few episodes?

Not really. The special fx get a little better (while remaining very lo-fi), but the tone remains pretty consistent.

It's definitely not for everyone. If you want to try something a lot different with one half of the Boosh, try the show "Nathan Barley". Julian Barratt is brilliant in it.

edit: Now that I think of it, Noel Fielding pops up once in a while in that show as well.

I just finished season 1, and I loved it. But you guys are right about The Spirit of Jazz. I don't know who was more uncomfortable, Howard or me. Maybe Howard, just slightly.

I feel like the British wouldn't say "I'm not a racist, but...", they'd just say everything after the "but...".

I am in the middle of season one and very much enjoying it. Favorite fake name so far?

"Biggie Shackleton"

Great show.  The British know funny.  Also check out The Jam, The Brass eye, and any show starring Steve Coogan ( if you haven't already).
