Tom sang the crap out of Under Pressure, yes?
I think it beat out the Aimee Mann show as my favorite "Tom Sings".
I've missed a bunch, of course. Other nominations?
-
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was one of the weirdest, most touching, weirdest radio performances ever.
"Thank God my writing's still alive!!!!!"
-
Singing along to all of Bridge Over Troubled Waters record to Sathington is still my favorite
-
this was by far my favorite part of the show this week. i was laughing the whole time. it was amazing.
-
The Santhington BOTW episode is my most listened to TBS.
Someone needs to collect his singing on to a web page somewhere "THE GREATEST HITS OF TOM".
Lets not forget Tom's love affair with Moulin Rouge!
-
Didn't he do Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway at one point? I love when Tom sings. It's hilarious, yet poignant.

Is this archived? I don't think I've heard it.

YES! I was both impressed and amused; a hefty achievement.. he really hit those notes.
-
Another vote for Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway." A perfect ending to a somewhat rocky show, if I remember correctly.
-
I liked it when he sang Pearl Jam's "Oh oh oh ooooohhhh I'm still aliiiiiiiiiiive!"

You can download Tom's wonderful "Breakaway" in .m4a format here:

My vote -- Tom serenading Studio 54 alum Manny with two Belle and Sebastian songs. I listen to this at least once a week. The pre-singing banter with Manny is also amazing. Tom tells him that he once arm-wrestled Diane von Furstenberg and injured her wrist. Manny dug the B&S, comparing it to a cross between Dan Hartman and the Brit lilt of John Lennon.
-
I put in a personal request for Tom to sing "Green Shirt" after his stellar performance of "Under Pressure." I think he could kill that one.
-
Though technically not ON TBSOWFMU, I am a big fan of Tom's version of "Magic Carpet Ride" that he did with the Hoof and Mouth Simfonia at the end of some Marathon one year. I only heard it once, but it's been reverberating in my head for years.
-
"Paradise By the Dashboard Light" (with Pseu Braun) is another showstopper. Possibly my favorite Hoof & Mouth track, period.
~EmD
-
Tom's rendition of "Celluloid Heroes" almost brought me to tears. my personal favorite.
-
Does it count if the singing was with a band? If so, then there is a certain masterpiece called "Pizza Party" that needs to be mentioned.
-
tom's singing killed on tuesday night.
I also greatly enjoyed tom singing "it's not going to stop" along with aimee mann provoked by an unrelenting kid kansass "you know how that part goes?" (feb 18, 2003 one hour 50 minutes into the show).
-
Who likes pizza? I LIKE PIZZA!
-
More Simon and Garfunkel on 3/30/04. Tom sings "I am a Rock", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", and little bit of "All by Myself" by Eric Carmen to Bronwyn as he's announcing his defection from New Power Tuesday.
-
There needs to be a Tom Sings part of the website, Jason???

Agreed! Someone should compile MP3s of him singing songs and keep them on the FOT page.
-
Thirded, if there was an mp3 archive I would put them on my Ipod and they would never leave. I consider them treats for loyal listeners since they are so rare.

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was one of the weirdest, most touching, weirdest radio performances ever.
"Thank God my writing's still alive!!!!!"
The November 30, 2004 show, 42 minutes in if anyone wants to hear it.
-
August 3, 2004, around 2 hours 45 minutes in.
More Eric Carmen!
And Fleetwood Mac!
And Listeners trying to alternately talk over/sing with Tom!

Oh, he was so committed during this performance!

More Singing!
August 24, 2004
In the last fifteen minutes, Tom sings the crap out of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
-
His rendition of "Whip it" on the 2/20/2007 brought me to tears of mirth.
-
Breakaway was the best. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 2nd.

-
A heartbreaking acapella version of the Happy Days theme, 18 minutes into the November 16, 2004 show.
-
August 10, 2004 1 hr 29 min in duet with a caller.

Raw genius. One of my favorite recurring themes in the show is when Tom falls in love with a piece of music. Magnolia, Moulin Rouge (I'm sure I butchered the spelling). The recurring stuff yields great moments.
-
I wouldn't say the version of Happy Days was "heartbreaking" so much as "terrifying."

That wasn't the Bridge over Trouble waters show was it?

potato, potatto
-
Was I dreaming, or did Tom once do Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel (with help from Matt or Mike, I think) during a show? I just tried going through each of the Artist if the Year archives and couldn't find it.
if anyone knows maybe when this was performed, I'd love you forever.
KTB.
-
I just heard Tom singing Chuck Mangione trumpet parts, from may 24, 2005. It is a revelation!
-
Starts at 2:32 on the 5/24/05 show.
FOTs - when you reference an archive bit, please put the time if you can!
-
June 21, 2005, starting around 2:07 in. Tom sings to Bye Bye Birdie, to show Petey what he's looking for in the Cannonball Run, the Musical song "We're racers, not rapists!"
-
Singing along to all of Bridge Over Troubled Waters record to Sathington is still my favorite
Yo, thanx for that. I'm new to the show and listened to that and I freakin' laughed til my guts hurt from that show.
The creepy Joe at first with the "John Ritter moment" loosened me up. It stalled a little with the tired Friendster bit though.
...But climaxed with Tom launching into singing the best of Simon & Garfunkle catalogue. Great stuff!
Am I sick to admit that I actually liked his singing?
The kid he almost banned for a month, is he still around?

Well, if you are sick, then so are we all. We have three pages of Tom's singing being discussed on a message board.
As far as the fwd kids that call are concerned, I find they usually drift away once school is back in session.
-
Inspired by the "Tom laffs" thread, what are some peoples favorite moments when Tom breaks into song during the Best Show?
Lately a highlight has been Tom breaking into "Kids," especially on last week's show.
But my favorite has to be at the end of the February 14, 2006 show (around the 2:51:00 mark) when Tom dramatically brings the show back in line with a stirring sing-along to Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway." Tom takes the song to places Kelly could only dream of.

january 23, 2007 1:53 mark, tom determines whether freddy mercury or david bowie wins 'under pressure'.

Would you believe thats the first time I ever heard that song all the way through?
-
My favorite (and this thread has come and gone in the past) if where he sings Bridge over Troubled Water to Sathington.
-
Glad to see this topic revived.
-
This is a few months old, but not on youtube, and I wanted to make sure everyone saw it.
Wow.
Tom Sings The Who. (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/2007/03/hm/32_tom.mp4)
-
Tom sings (and drums!) a few of Queen's greatest hits June 10, 2003 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=7848&archive=7796&starttime2:53:26).

Alright, I just heard this for the first time, and it is FANTASTIC. If you haven't heard it you won't be disappointed.
-
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was one of the weirdest, most touching, weirdest radio performances ever.
I think this might have been the first show I listened to. I think this is the one where he let the record scratch on the record play throughout. I may be wrong but, it was amazing.
I also too am a fan of Pizza Party.

Now I have! Sterling work, Barry Egan.
-
"All By Myself"
"Wise Up"
"Breakaway"
"Macarthur Park"
and "LA Woman" from the Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia is such an epic moment.
-
Not a singing moment per se, but this thread is reminding me of one of my favorite musical "Best Show" moments ever -- where Tom repeatedly played the alt mix of "'Til I Die" while multiple callers were speaking over each other. If I remember correctly, Tom was threatening to end it all by eating a roll of paper towels, thereby preventing him from singing.
Also, can't get me enough of his renditions of "Kids" from Bye Bye Birdie.
