I recently came across episodes of my favorite childhood show Rupert, and it really made my day being able to watch an episode or two. http://www.sidereel.com/Rupert (http://www.sidereel.com/Rupert)
Watching it again, I totally understood why I loved it as a child. The accents! The imaginative storylines! The adventure! The polite conversation!
Cartoon characters just don't act the same way anymore. In fact, even in the few years since I was a kid, childrens' cartoon shows in general aren't the same. I wonder if it is because
a) they're trying to make cartoons more educational
b) they're just plain sillier
There are few shows like Rupert anymore, and I think as result kids are forgetting how to have adventures. I guess you could complain the same thing about TV in general, but I am not going to turn into an old coot here, 'cause I am definitely not an old coot.
Anyway, I just wondered what your thoughts were, and if any of you have had similar experiences with nostalgia.
-
The weirdest shows I remember are The Mysterious Cities of Gold and the one with the inside out/anatomy guy. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I also enjoyed Down to Earth, the sitcom about a flapper ghost.
-
The Adventures of Pete and Pete. 'Nuff said.

here's some nostalgia for ya, this actually came from my family's VHS archive:

You can download the full thing from myspleen, it's about 2 hours from a CBS Saturday Morning block. It includes the last chunk of a Muppet Babies, a Pee Wee's Playhouse, a Garfield and Friends, a Hey Vern it's Ernest, and the first chunk of the ultra hard-to-come-by Flip.
URL for you myspleen users:

There's also a DVD of it, but it has no seeders, though you might get lucky if you put in a request.

I always thought it was so awesome in Muppet Babies when they moved the rug to reveal a trapdoor that led to the Doozers' world.
And your video? The commercials are even better than the shows! :)
-
CBS Saturday Morning was tremendous. Muppet Babies, Garfield and Friends and Pee-Wee's Playhouse were all great.
-
Jesus, you all are young.
I'd have to say Slim Goodbody or The Great Space Coaster.
-
A friend of mine and I watched an old VHS of Ren and Stimpy the other night...I was reminded why my brother always liked it more than I did.
And yes, I am pretty young, Buffcoat. That's why I have never heard of either of your shows. I will, however, remedy that by lookin them up.
-
I never cared for Ren and Stimpy either. However, I was a fan of both Doug and Rocko's Modern Life.

The Doozers were on Muppet Babies? I only remember them on Fraggle Rock.
The Adventures of Pete and Pete. 'Nuff said.
I have no idea about kids programming today. I hope there is something as good as Pete & Pete.

I tried to remember the name of that creepy show.

A little different, but does anyone remember The Third Eye, that creepy British show on Nickelodeon? That stuff gave me nightmares.

The Secret City w/Commander Mark! I can't believe opening this thread was the one thing after all these years that prompted me to look this memory up, but I'm glad I did. It's fascinating to see in retrospect how this show warped/shaped my young mind. Full episodes are out there on YouTube, here is part of one:

Later, as a slightly older kid I became addicted to Night after Night with Allan Havey. Actually if I think about it, there is a subtle but definable link in my entertainment preferences from Secret City, to Allan Havey, to eventually, decades later, The Best Show. I wonder if anyone else would see this link, or if I'm hallucinating.

oh man I hella watched Mark Kistler in my day. It was the later incarnation of his show when he ditched the space suit and was just a dude behind a drawing board. The Imagination Station. I met him at some local PBS convention in Redding. I remember him being not that nice? Not that he was a jerk or anything, he just wasn't pouring on the goofball charm like he is when the cameras are on. To be fair I was one of maybe 8 kids who actually attended his little drawing class, which was on a tiny stage out on the giant convention floor with a lot of empty folding chairs around. But in my head I spun his forced politeness that he was just upset that my picture was better than his. It probably wasn't really, he was probably just tired or something.

I am amazed that Miley could control herself to not put a finger under nose, mocking Kistler's mustache.

nobody i talk to watched this, but i sure did i'll tell you what

Was Night after Night that show with the "Audience of One"? Because if it is, I personally know half of the only "Audience of Two" that the show ever had.
I will have to tell my friend that this ultra uncommon reference came up. He will be so thrilled.

You young 'uns don't know weird. I was a wee pup in the 70's, when children's TV was starting to incorporate 60's psychedelia. The Magic Garden may have been specific to the Northeast. I watched it every weekday morning before my parents were awake, gobbling down Fruity Pebbles, and wearing Spiderman pajamas.
The chuckle patch segment = the origins of my bizarre sense of humor.

"Pancake Mountain (http://www.pancakemountain.com/)" out of DC looked really good but I have only seen clips. I love "Vowel Movement (http://www.pancakemountain.com/videos/evens.htm)" by the Evens.

Yes! "Vowel Movement" is the best song Fugazi never wrote. Truth be told, I like it a lot more than my kids.
-
Hey! Ted Leo was on Pancake Mountain (http://www.pancakemountain.com/videos/tedleo.htm) too! Shoulda known!

The full "Vowel Movement" video.

It wasn't a saturday morning show I think, but does anyone remember Maniac Mansion? I think it was for kids when I watched it. Based on the truly great commodore 64 game - Joe Flaherty was in it.
-
I just got a dvd of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein. I never watched it as a kid because it was so weird. Weird, weird, weird.
Did this play in the U.S., or was it exclusive to Canada?

I watched it in the late eighties. I remember nothing about it, but I vaguely recall enjoying it at the time.

How do I get on MySpleen? Because I MUST have this.
Also, any of you looking for good kids' TV these day will be sadly disappointed. I have a 2-year-old, and the only shows she watches that don't make me want to kill myself are Yo Gabba Gabba and The Misadventures of Flapjack (which is straight-up bonkers, and has some voice work by Brian Doyle Murphy).

That LazyTown is terrifying.

That LazyTown is terrifying.
Yipes, all those weird little people and their creepy plastic faces. It's like Dog Boy for preschoolers.
Thank god my kid doesn't watch this; I would have gone insane long ago.

Lidsville holds up.

That LazyTown is terrifying.
It is terrifying indeed-it is confusing because it's half live and half clay...it warps my reality!
My little sister was a big fan at the show's birth, but I think even she got confused and eventually quit watching it.
A really fun kids' show now is Wonderpets. It is so darn cute! It is meant for the very young kids though. I really love when they sing "The phone, the phone is ringing!"
And in answer to someone asking about Doozers appearing on Muppet Babies, I do remember at least one episode where the Muppet babies at least saw them in their underground complex. This may have been the only time they appeared.
And is that Yo Gabba Gabba (or whatever) pretty much like The Elephant Show

I sometimes watch Yo Gabba Gabba with my friend's kid (who is two) and it is way better than anything I had as a kid.

Jesus, you all are young.
The Great Space Coaster.
im too young for the great space coaster, but my other half wasn't; ive been educated on the great tv shows before my time.
although, im not too quick to knock cartoons i enjoy currently like, The Misadventures of Flapjack or Chowder. ive been known to watch my fair share of Fairly Oddparents or Spongebob but i choose nickelodeon over disney any day when watching television with kids.

Flapjack is insane. And awesome.
Disney is actually okay for preschool kids, but their older kids programming ranges from cringe-worthy to straight-up evil.

i love the animation in flapjack (the humor is bizarre), which is why i enjoyed Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends for a while. admittedly, im an adult who likes cartoons.
ive never seen pre-school disney, merely whatever is on when im at a friends house who has kids (and i spend a fair amount of time with 8-year olds that dont belong to me).
-
BaronVonTito! I too love Foster's Home.
I just wanted to say that I have never watched Yo Gabba Gabba, but I have just seen that Mates of State was on an episode.
This is pretty cool to me.

I felt a little bit like I was being brainwashed into communism when I watched this, but I think it's because I don't have the full Yo Gabba Gabba picture here, having never seen it.
