vegetarian?
I'm not trying to sound antagonistic, I'm just curious.
-
I was for a while, then I decided I like chicken.
-
i am far from a vegetarian, why? wanna trade recipe's for steak rubs?
-
I'm not really a vegetarian. I eat chicken. But I do not eat any sort of red meat.
-
I am as omnivorous as it gets.
-
Me too.
-
Apparently, my liking for meat is legendary in some circles.
-
What a bizarre question. The Best Show knows no dietary boundaries!!
-
where's yesno?
im only kidding. im a vegetarian that misses meat. i love it, but i have my convictions. although, i did fall for the swine once and a FOT was there to witness it. oh, memphis.
-
Meat is good food.
-
I had 2 turkey & cheddar sandwiches for lunch at the work cafeteria. They were gooooooooooood.
-
where's yesno?
Cake is better than pie.

I am chewing on an old rib bone right now. I dip it in this can of Karo.

lapsed vegetarian. i feel bad about it, because i haven't changed my mind about anything that made me a vegetarian.
then i went and married someone who introduced me to the wonder that is pernil...well, that was the end of that.
-
Bacon. The gateway meat.
-
I am a vegetarian. But I miss meat.
-
I really don't miss meat at all.

the south will make you change your priorities. i was a vegetarian when i moved to memphis and that didnt last long. then i became a hybrid- eating chicken but still gnawing on boca burgers and soy crumbles. then we moved next to the bbq shop:

I grew up on North Carolina bbq, and at this point I never want to eat/see/hear about it ever again.

I just started counting calories and working out in a concerted effort to lose weight for the first time ever, so this issue is at the forefront of my mind right now. After realizing that the two pieces of BBQ pork I ate for dinner were more than half of the daily calories I require as a heavy 6 foot* tall guy, I started strongly weighing the options of being a vegetarian.
Back in the day I cut out meat completely after reading a PETA pamphlet, but that was for the reasons of cruelty alone and sadly my bleeding heart wasn't bloody enough to keep the flesh from my lips for long. Aside from that incident, I have loved meat all my life. Now, all of a sudden, with the knowledge of how unhealthy it is coupled with the already accepted murderous aspects, I think I have to do it again as an adult. But seriously, how?
I suppose I'm asking you veggies for your input. How did you quit? Why do you keep it up? Does your life taste horrible, and if not, how did you avoid that? Please, help me understand better, so I can make this decision properly.

iambaronvontito: BBQ SHOP RULES SUPREME.
my wife is from memphis, and no trip there is complete for either of us without a trip to the bbq shop. THE BEST.
-
If you want to lose weight, may I recommend not drinking alcohol. This is hateful advice to some people. But it works! And instead of doing exercise per se, see if you can bike or walk to work. That is the end of my weight loss advice.
People tend to eat like 4 kinds of meat. There's a lot more variety viarity in the plant kingdom, flavor-wise. Also, junk food meat has been very well replicated by Science. I enjoy Quorn nuggets, veggie corn dogs, and various veggie burgers. I assume if you're motivated to quit eating meat, you will. But if you don't *really* want to, you won't. It's not like smoking or anything where you'll get obsessed. Just eat a slice of pizza and some trail mix or other delicious vegetarian treats. Once you stop being hungry, cravings go away. Most cravings are for fat or salt or something, anyway.

Yes, Tom is making us all turn vegetarian to earn his love and gain entrance into his cult.
If you've read Millroy the Magnificent, it's pretty much the same deal around here.

i just decided that i would rather fill my tummy with greens more than greasy food. i felt better when i was done eating (less lethargic) and i have fun doing things like going to the farmer's market, etc. looking for good fruit and veggies. i dont get the same feeling with meat (that's more of a personal preference than actual reason) while i watch it hang there. i like picking up the fruit and the veggies, smelling them, picking each one up and touching to see if its soft or hard enough, ripe, et al. its a fun experience to go grocery shopping for me.
similar to yesno's advice, i also stopped drinking beer; additionally, i REFUSE to walk down the chip/soda aisle and the frozen food aisle (too many snacks for me to grab). i cut soda and i drink only water and tea. i will admit to indugling in beer but its down to bi-monthly (if that) instead of weekly or daily. i work out EVERY DAY, park in the last, furthest spot at work, and walk everywhere i can instead of driving (a habit i developed moving back to AZ- luckily i live in a place that encourages this). i started all this the first week of march and ive already had to buy a new pair of jeans (the jeans i wore originally were snug). anyway...
lets hear it for making positive changes and creating a better self image!

iambaronvontito:
gus's on front street? AWESOME. tho when we went home a while back, us and her fambly ate at a gus's that was in a strip mall somewhere else in town and was nowhere near as good. i think i lost street cred with them (the inlaws) because i'd been talking it up for forever; i'd have to do some slick talking to get them over to front street now, i think.
have not tried rendezvous ... i am nutty about payne's. we both love soulfish. howard's donuts = killer. it's a very good thing we don't live there, else i'd weigh about 400 lbs.
-
regular joe:
if you want a few hundred things in favor of vegetarianism, do check out madhur jaffrey's "world vegetarian." it's incredible - ridiculously flavorful veggie dishes from all corners of the globe, and set forth in terms that make it difficult for beginner cooks (like me) to eff things up. like the recipe for doubles, fer instance: a very spicy trinidadian chickpea deal that makes just about all other food irrelevant.
we eat meat in this house, but infrequently ... it's honestly pretty boring compared to well-done veggie dishes.

soulfish is great! when im in cooper young, ill go to soulfish or celtic crossing (pricy, but good).
as far as vegetarian food in CY, i love going to square foods:
they have great sandwiches. otherwise, late nite dining means indulging in CK's Diner (cheap! cheap! cheap!).

I eat nothing but chicken quesadillas.
-
I do eat vegetables in addition to meat, so I can see how there are good options out there that won't make me want to take hunks out of a cow with my bare mouth, but I still kind of fear losing meat entirely. I think cutting down instead of cutting out is a better plan for me right now, with increased respect for rabbit food beyond it being the afterthought of a porkchop.
I don't drink alcohol more than once a month tops, so that certainly isn't a problem. I also don't think I like what you are trying to imply about me with that advice. As much as I like the sound of fake meat products to help get me through, I am trying not to use crutches or anything but common sense to get this done. I've always favored flavor over content, texture over nutrients, so I'm trying to grow up and get over that. If I kept eating corn dogs all day, even if made from soy, I feel that might defeat the purpose. Better to just have a little chicken breast and call it a day. Still, the roadwork is being laid towards eating in a way I can morally justify. I know that deep down under all these lamb gyros there is a part of me so fundamentally horrified by eating living beings that I cannot keep up this dance of ignorance and deliciousness forever. Your input is definitely helpful towards that end!
So, now that I've derailed this thread and the thought is in my head, I want to ask you all, are other FOT's besides me and BaronVonTito trying to lose weight right now? If so, we should do a FOT fit club! Seeing as this is an internet place with mostly Americans in it, you cannot possibly tell me I'm the only one here who looks upon skinny jeans with two completely different senses of disgust. We could motivate each other and make competitions out of it! Imagination is the limit. I think I brought this up a while ago, but not seriously. I'm serious now. If people really were into this, I'd be happy to learn how to set some kind of program up, or just help coordinate it with others who would be more apt at it.
Actually, I think I'll set up a thread for just that purpose right now! If anyone is interested, reply there!
lets hear it for making positive changes and creating a better self image!

I live in Memphis....that would be difficult, though apparently not impossible for many people here. I will trade barbecue recipes on the general thread if anyone is interested. Summer is coming.

eating hyper processed soy meat substitutes with a hundred ingredients is NOT more healthy than eating meat, especially if your meat is all natural.

I never said fake junk food meat was healthy. But it is nice to eat American-seeming food now and again. Health has little to do with my not eating meat. Though I'd bet I eat a more healthy diet than most people without giving it much thought.
Quitting eating meat for health doesn't make much sense, unless every time meat comes near you you gorge on handburgers or something, and only total avoidance works. I also doubt you can lose weight by quitting eating meat, or by exercising for an hour a day. (I think you can become more fit and healthy by exercising, just that healthy doesn't mean skinny.)
-
Health wise I see nothing wrong with lean cuts of meat. In fact, for optimal health, you probably need SOME source of animal protein (for a full amino acid profile....yadda yadda). I'm pretty much a egg, chicken, fish guy as it is now.
Philosophically though it's getting harder and harder to justify consuming a lot of red meat because of the political and environmental impact of factory farming. Although it's not overwhelming, in my mind, there is also a nagging existential quandary on the matter (taking life, animal rights).
I like day dreaming about the future and I suspect that our current eating habits are unsustainable for our species and the planet. I'm guessing within the next few hundred years we'll find away to grow meat on the vine. I'm just blue skying here, but scientists can already splice animal genes into plants so maybe one day my dream of walking thru an orchard and picking a basket of steaks will be a reality.

Your vision of the future horrifies me more than an environmental apocalypse brought on by factory farming ever could.

He missed the Vegan Wars of 2007.

I kind of agree with TE on the sweet things that can be done with Science. Unfortunately most lab meat to date has been gross, since being in a living animal gives meat certain qualities. But I do see potential for interesting pets: mini bears, snake/cat hybrids, etc.
-
(...just that healthy doesn't mean skinny.)
thats the truth. i have a friend who is twice my height and half my weight* but can barely make it up a flight of stairs without being winded. very curious issue until i walked into her house and found PILES of whataburger and mcdonald's bags on her kitchen counter.
*i like overexaggerating...but not by much.

Yeah my mom's 5 feet tall and around 110 lbs. She's got high blood sugar and high cholesterol, but she never gains a pound. She was quite surprised to learn she had to go on a diet.
-
thats interesting you bring that up, erika because diabetes runs on both sides of my family (maternal grandmother had it, mom is borderline, dad has it, and both paternal gradnparents had/have it) and i remember thinking about how plain dumb it is for me to be unhealthy considering it exponentially increases my risk for diabetes, let alone the fact that it's hereditary.
hence, im on my way to the gym now!

Diabetes just sort of rolls around in my family, and settles at the lowest point in the room.

That's a horrible image, Dave.

I've just heard a lot about vegetarianism on the show and forums.

On the bright side, when you know you're pretty much guaranteed to have certain problems because of your genes, you can really relax. I could eat no fat, and I'd still have sky-high cholesterol because it's in my blood (see that neat double entendre there?).
-
Eating meat is wrong, but it makes up 80% of my diet pretty much.
-

Hey Regular Joe: I became vegan by taking it slow, giving up one thing at a time. At some point it stops being about what you can't have, and more about all the delicious things you can. The best way to keep it up and make life taste good is, I think, to learn how to cook. The Madhur Jaffrey book Baron mentioned is good; I learned to cook by taking children's vegetarian cookbooks out of the library and starting with those. It helped me to learn the basics, and not to be intimidated by recipes.

I read about half of it, Sarah, and I was enjoying it, but real life (meaning the end of a term, like right now) intruded, and I never went back to it, I think partly because the fat slob "buddy" hit a little too close to home.
-
That's a horrible image, Dave.
I could be the next David Lynch!

Again, it was the scene(s?) with the diabetic relatives that caused me to recommend the thing to you in the first place. I meant no unflattering comparisons to be drawn between the friend--who is very sweet, I seem to recall--and you.
-
I know some lady who has diabetes and is really anemic right now. She drinks more than I ever did and doesn't think it's related to any of her health problems. I think that's funny.
-
I have a sister like that.

Oh no, I know that, it's all on me! You're a fave, Sarah, no offense intended, and none taken. I am curious about what led to the disappearance of that as a film project, as mentioned on the sleeve. It was very cinematic.
