Review of the upcoming 'Big Fan' (http://notcoming.com/reviews/bigfan/)
Sounds great!
for those who do not know already:
"In his debut as writer-director, Robert D. Siegel (screenwriter for The Wrestler) takes on the curious subculture of sports talk radio. It’s a phenomenon ripe for parody – cogent sporting analysis frequently gives way grown men publically airing crackpot theories, engaging in unabashed idolatry, and striking up petty rivalries with one another – and with Big Fan Siegel deftly teases out the humor in the goofy grandstanding of the regular callers. The film’s titular fan is Paul, a slouchy, mostly-unhappy parking garage attendant and devotee of the New York Giants who gets through his boring work nights by scribbling down diatribes to unleash on the airwaves after hours. He lives for the Sunday games, but, unable to afford tickets, Paul and his best friend Sal (played by a droll Kevin Corrigan) spend game days tailgating with a portable television just outside of the Giants’ stadium."

Holy balls. I had read about this when I saw the Wrestler a few months ago but I didn't know Ratalouie was starring.
-
According to Corrigan's Law, this will be a good movie.
-
When does this open? (Rather than pull a "Spike", I already checked IMDB, but couldn't find a date beyond just this year.)
I certainly hope that I never say "pull a Spike" again.

I was just told that I did in fact know this months ago, and in fact was talking about it.

No exact date, but I'm pretty sure it's coming out sometime around Smarch 2002.

reading this thread, i had a deja vu trip. it may not have been you, but someone on the board brought this movie to my attention some months ago.
-
Can't wait to check this one out. My initial understanding was that it was supposed to be more dark and less comedic. Or is a mixture of both?
-
I just added this to my Netflix queue, and I have been informed that the movies most like it include Mr. 3000, Dodgeball, Nacho Libre, and The Longest Yard, among others. I have to assume that there is something deeply wrong with Netflix.
-
sometimes netflix acts like pandora, pastor josh. not to worry.

Poster, you guys.

Nice.
-
Just bought my ticket for Monday's screening in Brooklyn!
-
Ha! Love it!
-
The trailer is out. Looks superb.

Holy crap. That looks fantastic.
-
Patton Oswalt, Academy Award nominee?
Let's get a pool going here.
-
This movie looks incredible.
I freelance for a weekly arts & entertainment rag that the Dallas Morning News puts out. Big Fan screened at the AFI film festival back in March/April. I hit up P.O. on the MySpaces to see if he'd do a Q & A to coincide with said screening. I shamelessly name-dropped that I was a proud, card-carrying F.O.T. in the hope that it might expedite my request. He quickly and courteously obliged. Here tis...
Q: You've talked before about people who might be most familiar with you from King of Queens or Ratatouille coming to your stand-up shows expecting family friendly fun and getting something else altogether. What should these people know before purchasing their ticket to Big Fan?
Oswalt: Oh good Lord, they ought to know this is a non-judgemental, R-rated character study, in the same spirit of FIVE EASY PIECES or KING OF MARVIN GARDENS. I keep calling it "Fatsy Driver", to my director's eternal frustration.
Q: How did you hook up with Robert Siegel and what initially drew you to the project?
Oswalt: Friends in common, then breakfast, then admiration (on my part) to him starting without an assured ending.
Q: Your character Paul Auferio considers himself to be the world's biggest NY Giants fan. Where do you and the character converge? How do you differ?
Oswalt: We converge in a shared fuel of obsession and part ways when it comes to our targets.
Q: What kind of reception has the film been getting from audiences?
Oswalt: Critics and audiences alike seem to react with an exhausted, jittery thankfulness.
Q: While making the festival rounds for BF, have you had a chance to catch any of the other films that are screening? If so, which ones do you recommend?
Oswalt: So far, no. Too many interviews during afternoons when I'd be better suited to darkness and projected light, and other people's stories, instead of my own. Oh well.
Q: In a relatively short time you've taken on stand-up, sitcoms, big-budget features, voice acting, and now an independent, somewhat bleak, 1970s-style character piece. What other creative arenas would you like to explore?
Oswalt: Something that involves me trusting the signal of my intention to someone else's expression noise. Don't know what that'd entail, though.
Q: Who's making you laugh these days?
Oswalt: A version of myself in my 20's that I meditate on. His conviction and ignorance are hilarious.
Q: Any chance of you going the Murphy/Martin route at some point and retiring from stand-up to do features full time?
Oswalt: I didn't know Michal Murphy and Mary Martin ever did stand-up.
-
This movie is incredible. At the screening they said it opens in August.
-
Also, TBS was brought up during the Q & A.
-
I was hoping for a screening of Rambocky but this looks even better!
-
What did Quantrell say right before he attacked Patton's character.
-
What did Quantrell say right before he attacked Patton's character.
He asked if they had been following him. I had to watch the trailer a second time to hear that one too.
-
He calls into a radio show where "he rants in support of his beloved team, often agaisnt his mysterious on-air rival, Eagles fan Philadelphia Phil"
Wait, Whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.

Suddenly I am praying I never run into AP Mike in a Hoboken strip club.
-
Even though I'm sure many of you get the podcast, a heads up for the rest:
Robert Siegel (writer/director) is interviewed in the newest Sound of Young America.

Not possible. No strip clubs in Hoboken. Hoboken thinks it's too good for strip clubs (it went nuts when the "Romantic Depot" opened).
-
This movie is incredible. At the screening they said it opens in August.
Does anyone know the release date yet? I looked online and couldn't find it.

Guh.

Thanks, VonTito!
(I see a date to atlanta coming up...on Sept. 11...to the art cinema!)
-
9/11 Washington D.C. - Landmark E Street Cinema
Dagger. I'll be back in school by then. I can't wait for general release though.
-
did someone mention they were driving around the print of the film like a traveling circus? the release dates seem to make it more like a blue man group situation. i'm excited for this and i just want to know if there's only a tiny window to watch it.
-
I will see this, even though that clip of Patton revving up to talk to the on-air personality hits a liiiiiiiittle too close to home.
-
9/25 Detroit, MI - Detroit Institute of Art
There's a pretty good chance I'll be driving there from school. Too bad it didn't open when I was already here.
-
I almost drove the two hours to the OC last night to see it. Crazy.
-
Patton and Robert Siegel are on Fresh Air on NPR. The Best Show was mentioned... and the word "on the fringes" followed.
-
the fact that this movie will be released in tucson (which i love) and not phoenix tells you what kind of city this place is.
-

"fringe-magnet"
-
No Portland,OR screenings? I can let it slide that Austin would get screened before here but to have it screened in Omaha, NE before Portland is total bullshit
-
So over the last few weeks, and those to come, while promoting 'Big Fan', how many times do you think Patton will have been greeted with, "Thanks, Patton... big fan here...", by 'entertainment reporters' being 'clever'?
-
No Portland,OR screenings? I can let it slide that Austin would get screened before here but to have it screened in Omaha, NE before Portland is total bullshit
I know, are we not artsy enough?

Ha ha.
Good job, Dundee! Only two weeks after NY and LA, that's solid.

I guess I'll be watching this one on DVD.

Take your lumps, Oregon.

Decent interview with Patton and Robert Siegel on Deadspin (http://deadspin.com/5342673/interview-patton-oswalt-robert-siegel-explore-the-sadness-of-big-fandom) today:
-
According to the NY Times (or maybe the MPAA - I dunno who comes up with these warnings), 'Big Fan' contains "salty language and self-love."
Now I'm gonna see it for sure.
-
can i admit two emotions im feeling very strongly when i watch the trailer (as i do since i will not be seeing the film for a while):
1) what the hell, phoenix/memphis?!
2) i cringe and the anxiety is overwhelming when i see patton get his face punched in. it makes me very uncomfortable.
-

Whitney Houston said it best. It's the greatest love of all.

I saw a poster for some movie in the subway this week, and it warned of "incidental smoking". That "incidental" is so irritating.
-
SO. GOOD. SO. VERY. GOOD.
-
I caught this last night at the Angelika in NY last night (Alec Baldwin's favorite movie theater). I only heard / felt 2 subway trains go by while watching.
I don't think this needs to be said, but everyone should see this as soon as possible. Patton was excellent.
One caller in the movie sounded a little bit like Larry the Perv to me, pretty strange.

Shouldn't a movie be out for more than 2 days before its cult potential is considered?

Doesn't the phrase "cult classic" usually imply that a movie sucks and there is an ironic joy to watching The Suck? If so, this is not a cult classic. It is a CLASSIC.
-
I think a cult classic simply means a movie that did not have a large audience or much critical success but has a small, dedicated, niche fan base. Whether the movie is good or not doesn't come into it.

Cult + time= religion.

Yes.

It probably is premature to call a movie a "cult classic" before the cult actually forms.

In that case, please send a SASE to me for your informational packet and official Big Fan Snuggie of Truth. All Hail the Duck Sauce Packet!

Considering we on this board have been drooling over the movie for many, many months now, is it not fair to say there's already a cult?
-
How dare you call the Friends of Tom a cult!
wait

Religion. Marty.

To add to Patton's recent achievements, his new CD debuted at #5 on Billboard's digital albums, landing between Reba and Black Eyed Peas.

the only fear i have when my favorite comedians sell out actually has nothing do with them. it comes to knowing that some real cretons are going to come out to the shows. my number one pet peeve at comedy shows is when someone (or everyone) thinks their a comedian.
luckily, a Patton (and others) are pros...as shown on werewolves and lollipops.

I liked this movie and you probably will as well. However, after reading this thread and seeing the movie, most of you should lower your expectations considerably. It's a very low-key movie.
-
I listened to the Fresh Air interview with Patton and the writer/director and they played a few clips from the movie. I had a really hard time taking Patton seriously in the clip where he calls into the radio station. Maybe I've listened to too much of his stand-up or something.
Also, he references The Best Show in the interview.
-

I'm not sure I get your meaning. Lower our expectations for what? Action, earth-shattering revelations about the human condition, or quality? I'm not expecting a very action-packed movie, but a very good one with sincerity and heart. Like THE WRESTLER.
-
Obviously I wasn't saying don't go expecting an action movie, you'll be disappointed. I guess what I was trying to say is that because of The Wrestler (and Patton), I shared in the excitement that I read on this thread. Again, I liked this movie and I think it was very successful on the terms it set itself, but I don't think its a movie that benefits from a high level of excitement or expectations. Its a much smaller film than The Wrestler and it doesn't have the things that made The Wrestler get a lot of awards and nominations. I'd hardly call it a movie with sincerity and heart.
-
they shoulda called this movie Big Fun.

You never fail to make me laugh, Dave Stevidson.

Just noticed that Patton is the latest guest on noted-Zach G-skeptic Bill Simmons' ESPN podcast. Might be an interesting interview, given the lack of common interests.
-
The Boston premiere was today- I loved it! Intense.
-
Finally got a chance to see this tonight at New Beverly Cinema here in Los Angeles. The film was great and Patton nailed the Q&A after the credits. Great performances, great soundtrack, great story. Nothin' but Netski.
Seek it!

It is okay. It will be on DVD 1/12. I too wish I could actually see it as a premier, though.

Like all North American dvd releases, this one has a shitty cover. How will the Big Fan help his team win the Big Game, and is "Dwayne" The Rock Johnson involved?

I don't get what you mean. This coverbox clearly conveys that an optimistic uncle (played by Patton Oswalt) coaches his nephews rag-tag football team to victory against the red team.

No offense, but I say PURCHASE it! When has Patton ever steered you wrong?
-
I really, really liked it. I will have to purchase it at the first opportunity. Patton did a great job and I think Siegel has a really interesting career as a filmmaker in front of him.
I do want to know what studio person thought that DVD cover was a good idea, though. Yikes.
-
I do want to know what studio person thought that DVD cover was a good idea, though. Yikes.
Isn't there some kind of expression like "a camel is the only animal designed by committee" or something like that? In the book biz, a bunch of people sit around a room and argue about each and every detail on a cover sometimes. It's ridiculous. This kind of cover won't work with consumers, that kind of cover won't show up well on the amazon title page, etc etc. Usually the most forward and innovative cover concepts are nixed - because they are too forward.

Eh... Leatherheads has its charm.

This was a damn fine movie. Won't say much more due to possible spoiler concerns, but it's a movie I can point to and say "this is how you do a montage scene".

It seems no one at Netflix has seen Big Fan.

Mine too!!! and Me Neither!!!

The moment when they work up the courage to talk to the football player at the strip club had me cringing i couldn't look, and the scene when his mom finally picks up the phone at a critical moment had me rolling.

I don't remember the song, but I was very pleased to hear "Big White Cloud" by John Cale featured elsewhere, since it is one of my favorite songs.

It was an older song kind of in the same vein as the John Cale song. I wish there was soundtrack listing for this movie all i could find were a couple of songs listed but not all of them.

Do you still have the DVD? All of the songs are listed in the ending credits, so you can probably narrow it down at the least.

This movie was excellent, and not really all that depressing in the end.

I remember liking that song too. Looking forward to finding out who it was.

Just found this article but haven't read it yet. Perhaps the answer is in here, perhaps it isn't. Still looks like a fun read.

This movie was excellent, and not really all that depressing in the end.
I started to cringe once Paul got into the car to drive down to Philly, and then in the bar, but the payout of that whole scene was so great and unexpected.
Some of the comments at Big Fan's IMDb page are hilarious: "a story that doesn't have a change at the end, isn't a real story".

I agree with YOUR sentiments. Not with those trolls at imdb*. I found the ending very satisfying.
*I have started so many false rumors** and played devil's advocate so many times on IMDb, that I don't bother to take anything seriously on that page.
**My most famous being the rumor that Marv (Mickey Rourke) from Sin City was actually Wolverine after he ran away from the X-Men, cut his hair, and vowed to never use his claws again. People went nuts over that. I'm happy to say that since finding the Best Show boards, I haven't bothered with the IMDb boards so much.
-
I was wrong about the song. The song i was thinking of was the song that plays when he walks into the bar in slow motion. It starts out with a little guitar noodle when hes out on the street and then turns into an old 70's soul/funk/rock song when he walks in. I looked at the credits and the writing is to small i cant read what it says i believe the song is "In the C.....let" by R......... B....r Any help? Maybe somebody has a better tv than mine that will show the credits clearer.
Oh yeah and Michael Rapaport was great in this.

I was psyched when I realized that Philadelphia Phil's voice was Rapaport. I don't love the guy, but I never dislike him either. He just makes me laugh. A friend of mine has his phone number and once a year I'll listen while he pranks Rapaport's answering machine, which always has a new freestyle rap on it.
No zoom button on your remote to help with those credits?

Rappaport seems to be able to only do one thing, but it was perfect for this role.

Finally saw it, what an awesome movie. Take away the sports aspect and this could be the story of any number of FOTs!
I agree with the person that said Michael Rapaport is an exact fit for this. It's like he just came to terms with always playing some version of himself, and went full bore obnoxious Rapaport for this. The character is like a drill to the brain pan, perfectly so.

How dare you.

You're only mad because I spit truth. Seriously, the whole time I was watching it (and re-watching it), I kept thinking all we would need is a feud of football proportions for this to become a frightening reality. Also, Tom may have to kick someone in the back of the head a couple times. But still, you know I'm not wrong!

It is true. Patton mentioned the Best Show in his interview with Terry Gross when she asked about where he found inspiration to play a radio show caller. The phrase "fringe magnet" was used.
-
As we were watching it, my wife wondered if Patton prepared for the role by pretending Stan Lee kicked him in the nuts.

IMDb board comes through:

"Ain't Nuttin' Changed" - Krayzie Bone

I just watched it last night and it gave me the tip of scripting and rehearsing my calls into the Best Show. Does anyone know where I can get some WFMU sheets with the names of all the shows all over them? My mom wants to buy me some for my birthday.

Great idea for a mouse pledge premium.

I watched the first 20 minutes tonight before promising a lady friend I'd wait for her to watch the Wrestler, then watch Big Fan with me. It was really hard turning this movie off.ß

You did the right thing, from a gentleman's point of view ... But you could have just finished it and then pretended that you hadn't whenever you and she watch it. Is this a lady friend that you hope will be your special lady?

Yes, I agree with Steve, lying to her is always a good idea, because it keeps you on yours toes mentally (did I tell her that or did I just think about telling her that?)
By the way, Steve, for my money, "Flesh not felt" was the best caller interjection of the week.

Yes, from Lady Friend, to special lady indeed. I think this will be one of those movies to help things roll along. She's a movie fan, but I was shocked she hadn't seem the wrestler yet.

Speaking of The Wrestler, the Acme that is featured in the movie (and my personal supermarket), will be closing Feb. 5, so if you'd like to take the tour, it's now or never.
No word yet on what supermarket chain will be replacing it, but my guess is that it will be a Stop & Shop. They seem to be cropping up everywhere these days.

I'll wager on Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Bayonne's primed to join the rest of the -- cough -- Gold Coast.

Thank you very much, Dave!!! AND!!! You read my mind because I actually meant to say "Flesh Not Felt" but something went haywire and I said "Flesh Not Fur." But I think the point is the same, given the context.
Flesh Not Felt!

Oh man! I can't make it to Jersey by then :(

I live with my mom. The same thing could happen with me and Herzog.
I better move out soon.

finally got around the seeing the movie.. and then watching all of the extras immediately after (the chicago discussion + the deniro story are both really funny and worth a watch)
excellent movie. the only thing that caught me a little off guard is how little media praise i heard about the supporting cast. kevin corrigan & marcia jean kurtz in particular i thought were both excellent

The supporting case was tremendous. I was flipping through the channels today and saw Grounded for Life on abc family or something and watched it just to see Kevin Corrigan, I had forgotten about that show and that he was really entertaining in it.
I saw the movie at theatres and bought the dvd maybe two weeks ago cause I liked it so much. But I still haven't been able to watch it all the way through a second time. It's one of those movies where when I know what's going to happen, I can't stand watching it again. Like Taxi Driver, or Stroszek.

MOVIE FAN WHO HASN'T SEEN THE WRESTLER YE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I don't know what to make of that. But then again, there are plenty of great movies that i haven't gotten around to watching either. Hello, Citizen Kane 2: Still Kanin'!
So, progress report, please. Have you two finished these movies yet?
-
I have not seen the Wrestler. The more details I hear about it, the less I guess I need to.

Nah, Dave, it's still a pretty damn good watch. I knew the ending going in, but seeing it in its entirety is a pretty moving experience.
-
My favorite indie distribution company just secured the Swedish distribution rights for BIG FAN. Don't know if they plan a theatrical release or straight to DVD - but exciting nonetheless.
-
They're showing Big Fan on Showtime now. I didn't notice it before but there are a lot of similarity's between Big Fan and Buffalo 66.
I think Dave From Knoxville needs to teach Patton about the car/isolation booth when calling, then his mom cant interrupt him anymore.

Bonehead move of the summer.
A few weeks ago, Patton was doing a signing in Burbank for his new comic book. I went out to get two copies signed and also took my DVD copy of The Kid Stays In The Picture for him to sign as a joke.
As soon as I got back to my apartment, it dawned on me that I HAVE A COMPLETELY SWEET DVD OF BIG FAN THAT WAS ALL RIPE FOR A SIGNIN'!!! When will I learn?
