I love Tom Waits. I like early Randy Newman. Kevin Smith movies are badly directed and the writing is completely unrealistic, but I think they are usually pretty funny. I love old folk and blues (Anthology of American Folk Music type stuff, not modern takes on it).
-
Stuff Tom hates that I like:
Blues music, baseball, The Band, Al Green, Pangaea and other old timey stuff.
Stuff Tom likes that I do not:
Most of the shows on Adult Swim, Unrest, Death Cab for Cutie
-
BTW, Tom doesn't hate Kevin Smith. It was all an act. Didn't you hear Kevin Smith on the show a few weeks ago?

Baseball, jazz, blues, Tom Waits. I don't love Tom Waits' music, but I like it.

Baseball and jazz music are the ones that stand out for me.

Im Not There, and i sort of liked Juno what?

I am pretty sure there has already been a thread like this one. I am too lazy to find it.

Indeed there was.

I say we keep this one going anyway.

Even older thread.

The second I get sick, you people start coming up with your own opinions on things.
For shame.
Tom.

I like two or three of Ryan Adams albums. He's not the best, but I like a lot of other songwriters of his type.
Just wanted to say that I completely agree with Tom on George Carlin. Just awful.
-
Yeah Tarintino is a rip off sometimes and he hasn't made that many great films lately but Pulp Fiction not holding up?
-
I love Tom Waits, or at least about half of his output, but I can perfectly understand how someone would hate him.

I will admit that I loved George Carlin and saw him perform live four times. The material near the end of his life was not to my liking. But hey, the guy was ancient so I choose to cut him some slack.
I think it has a lot to do with discovering someone at the right time in one's life. I was a teenager and his act was the first "racy" stand up I ever saw. Totally novel in my world.

Yeah, me too. He pretty much blew my mind when I was 14, and I think he was smart. Plus, I share his misanthropy.
-
I'm pretty misanthropic about misanthropes.

Tom is the male Mary Wilke.
-
Yeah, I like Tarentino too. Death Proof was probably the worst thing he's done, most of it is terrible. However, the car chase scene is a really good car chase scene.

Manhattan is on Turner Classic Movies later this week. For any of you who haven't seen it, you should.

I love Death Proof from beginning to end and I know I'm in a minority with that opinion. However, if you want something to chew on check out this analysis by screenwriter Todd Alcott.
Part One: http://toddalcott.livejournal.com/258682.html
Part Two: http://toddalcott.livejournal.com/259147.html
Part Three: http://toddalcott.livejournal.com/259508.html
He's really insightful and gives the movie serious consideration.

I don't see how anyone can hate on Kill Bill.

I love meat!

I love his casting.

edit: probably too far.

Damn, I missed it.
-
you didn't miss much. just a joke about Tom not liking a minority that I don't mind.
-
Albinos? No, wait, that's an Andy.

Truth be told, I have no problem with Bill Maher. I kind of like his show on HBO.
Also: Steely Dan! I had unorthodox study techniques in school involving Steely Dan.
-

I really like Real Time and really liked Religulous, Bill Maher's movie. The only time he gets on my nerves is during his monologue when his hackey jokes don't get large guffaws he acts like the audience gasped and lost their collective monocles. Also, when he goes off about being a vegetarian and how we're all killing ourselves with toxins.

You don't have to like/hate everything about somebody because you like/hate some things. The ****s were some real assholes, to hell with them I say. You got to admit they knew how to dress though.
wait....too far?

I think he means the White Stripes.

I loved Frank Zappa as a teenager. Don't adore his music the way I used to, but I still listen to it on occasion.
Ditto on earlier "I like it!"s for Tom Waits, jazz, and baseball.
Also have a soft spot for Steely Dan, since my mom played it a lot in our house when I was growing up. They don't take themselves seriously enough to inspire much hate, IMO.
-
Stuff Tom seemingly everyone hates that you like.
Trent Reznor. Not only NIN, but the Saul Williams album as well! (I liked the self titled SW album as well, but not the Rick Ruben produced one).
-
Alternative country, including Ryan Adams, Wilco and forefathers The Band. Recent Bob Dylan albums and Soupjam Stevens. Hockey, Baseball and Boston Sports teams, especially the Celtics... as seen in our sparring sessions on Twitter... Come to think of it, Boston, Massachusetts in general.
-
Soupjam Stevens.
Is that you Spike?
-
Soupjam Stevens.
Is that you Spike?
Check Tom's unfair record review of 'Come on feel the Illinoise'. You'll discover that that's the correct pronunciation of Mr. Stevens' name.
-
I'm always surprised by how much Tom knows about the alt-country genre and that he still dislikes it. I think he dropped a Burrito Brothers reference in the unfair record review for Ryan Adams. Maybe Tom likes the Brothers and not Ryan Adams; is it the genre as a whole or just particular artists that Tom dislikes?
I like the genre as a whole.
I also love the MN Twins (so, baseball, by association) and I'm not a big basketball fan.
I used to not like Abba but Tom has (like so many other things) turned me on to them.
-
Wilco, blues in general, The Room, Kill Bill, Lord of the Rings (to a degree), multiple types of food, and probably a lot of other little things.
Interestingly, not much stuff Tom likes that I dislike. Not that I can think of, anyway.

You and me both, Julie. Right there with you on Dairy Queen. I wasn't aware that M. Scharpling didn't like Dairy Queen.
After seeing most of this thread, it reassures me to see that we FOT are doing our own thinking, whatever may be printed on the FOT membership card. Still, I'm with Tom more often than not.

My brief experience with teaching gave me a feeling similar to watching 'Eraserhead'.

i used to love the mini baseball helmet sundaes they had. does anyone know which show it is when PBR talks about robbing a dairy queen to get like 10000 of those?

You can't go wrong with a Blizzard or Peanut Buster Parfait.

Big Boi from OutKast. I think Tom was mad at him for breeding pit bulls, which are presumably then used to fight each other, and I can understand being upset over that. It doesn't make him talentless, though.

I prefer the other one. I would like to have dinner with him.

I get what you're saying, Stupornaut. I think dog breeding is horrid but I agree that Big Boi is gifted on the mic. I propose Mutants That Are Talented as a topic.

Hearing Tom's dissection of Ryan Adams in the Gems podcast made me laugh hard, even though I generally like Adams.

I love the movie and soundtrack to TRON. I ordered the DVD immediately when it was finally issued.

I don't know which ep that is, but your recollection gave me quite the flashback. When I was a kid, we got a bunch of mini-baseball helmets at a couple of different establishments--Red Sox and Phillies for some reason, even though I grew up in upstate NY. And for the rest of my childhood, and every time i go back to my mom's house, ice cream can only be consumed in one of these helmets.
-
I haven't watched Tron in ages but I loved it as a kid. And a Windy Carlos soundtrack is always a good thing.
Right now though, I've REALLY been enjoying Randy Newman's "Sail Away".

Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Jerry Lee Lewis rolled into one = Terry Adams.
-
I kind of like Eraserhead, but it's not something that want to watch more than once or twice. To me, it's exactly what a dream is like. It's definitely told in a "dream-like" way.

You're ok with me Pigeon.
Do you know Clay Pigeon?
He and I are friends from way back.
I was wondering if you might be related?

I remember reading a fiction book in junior high about a kid time traveling back to the Revolutionary War. There was a chapter with the kid describing what food was like on the battlefield, and the way he described pidgeons made it seems absolutely delicious.
I'd love to try one one day solely on that basis.

Nah, around 2001.

There have been some shots at Henry Rollins during some phone bits, so I'm not exactly sure where Tom stands. "Do It" had a nice run, so I doubt he hates him. The stuff they ripped, e.g., Rollins always playing up his eclectic tastes then laying down questionable music with Rollins Band, is founded and reasonable. But I do like Rollins.
Um...this kinda went nowhere.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I can't stop listening to it!

With an Ecto-Cooler!
Is that a kind of refrigerator that cools with ghosts instead of Freon?
-
I've cooled on Tom Waits and The Band, but I'll always be a Randy Newman fan. I'm surprised Tom dislikes him so much, since I think he's one of the few legitimately funny songwriters out there. Too mean-spirited, maybe.

They were Hi-C pouches in the mid-nineties, I think. I can't remember what the difference with the taste was, but Slimer was on the box.

Steely Dan
Sonic
Tron
The new Kanye West album (somebody said this)
'Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time' (or does Tom like this? So many people hate it, I can't keep them straight)

I remember Ecto-coolers and Ghostbusters cereal being supremely delicious.

Anyone who doesn't like ecto-cooler is a fool.

I've cooled on Tom Waits and The Band,
Does Tom really hate The Band, or just not quite get them? I did hear him say he hates Tom Waits though. Oh well, his loss.

I'm sure no one will agree with me, but I actually found most of the 'King of Kong' cast to be quite endearing.
-
With the caveat that there are tons of things that I'm not interested in (e.g. most sports) but can't say "I don't like" because I don't have an informed opinion of them....
Stuff Tom hates that I like:
Steely Dan.
Stuff Tom likes that I do not:
Guided By Voices

That's another one for me. I actually liked that movie a lot. I thought Billy Mitchell made a good villain and found the Steve W guy pretty relatable. Losing yourself in a video game from the 80s after getting the shaft at work is a lot more interesting than the losing yourself in a bottle after getting the shaft at work story. The referee guy also amused me.

This American Life. I don't blame Tom because there's plenty to make fun of if you're inclined. But come on!
-
Maybe it's just my Love for him as a twelve year old, but I have a lifelong love of Zappa. Those first three MOV albums are top notch, especially Absolutely Free. All the Mothers stuff really. I dig Waits too, Swordfishtrombones through Bone Machine is a great run of records.
-
I like country music, but it's kind of ambiguous whether Tom really hates it or not. I've heard him play some Laura Cantrell before.
