Title: Thanks, FOT!
Post by: Andy on May 25, 2009, 06:36:50 PM
Here's a thread to thank the FOT (individually or collectively) for things that they've done to make your life better.

My first:
Thank you to whoever suggested I go see the Heartless Bastards at Austin City Limits Festival a couple of years ago.  I could go back and search for who it was, but I won't. The show was amazing and they've become one of my favorite bands since then.

If this isn't a very long thread, we should all be ashamed.

This cat is currently alive and healthier, thanks in part to Jason and the FOT's. It means the world to me.

And I get to adopt Erika's fiancee's cat!  Thanks, Greg and Erika.

I'm also thankful for all the British comedy I've been turned on to here.

search only returned 2 results, and it turns out that TL was the one who recommended the Heartless Bastards, so: Thanks TL.

Also, thank you to whoever turned me on to Just a Minute.  I think it was Bruce, but there were definitely others who drove me to listen.  I love that show (even if no one else I play it for does.)

Yeah, Bruce was the one who told me about it.  Sad that Clement Freud kicked it, nay?

Thanks again to AM Thomas who recommended the down-the-aisle music for my wedding ceremony - it was a huge hit and very memorable.

Well, Ted Leo, I guess. And the Dirtbombs, even though I could not get my box of wine to them. And Julie Klausner!

I can't think of specific things to thank people specifically. Mostly FOT have turned me to great music, and have generally been so very nice. For that I thank thee.
I will repost when I remember some particulars.

Thanks to everyone for hundreds of cultural recommendations, and (if it's not too, um, po-faced of me) for providing a little lifeboat of hilarity, compassion and intelligence to me during a time when I've felt pretty isolated from that stuff.

I second the thanks to jason for the term "po-faced;"
thanks to MOS (I think) for the band RPG;
thanks for recommendations for the movie Sunshine and the book Lush Life and Jay Reatard;

If it weren't for the FOT support of Eastbound and Down, I would not have given it another chance. I saw 5 minutes when I was really tired and wrote it off. People here convinced me to revisit.

And I have a life-coach to look to when I am pondering major decisions. Thanks Julie -- you may not know it but you have become a guiding light for me.

...and a special thank you to Trinsky/DB for giving our cat Hercules a good new home. He'll have a place where he can hang out without worrying about other kitties... and where other kitties don't have to worry about him.

Thanks again! I don't know what we'd do if I had to give him to someone I didn't know (or like) as well as you. Getting rid of a pet is so tough, and you're making it so much easier!

Thanks to Grote for sending me a monologue from an unfinished play, and a good one at that, when I was looking for monologues. That was supercool.

My pleasure, Erika.  I'm gonna love the crap out of that cat!

Hugman's post reminded me that Grote got me an audition for one of his plays in DC last year.  Didn't get it, but very awesome to get the shot.  Thanks, Jason.

Also I'm grateful for just about everything KtB has created, written, or posted, cuz he's hilarious.

Hey, thanks for thanking me, Hugman and Dorvid.  Thanks everybody for generally being supportive and hanging out in NY/NJ and on trips to LA and DC last year (incidentally, I won't be going to Seattle to see my play out there but if Joe and/or Patrick and/or anyone wants free tickets, PM me, seriously, it's really easy for me, and it runs until June 6; no hard feelings if you miss it, of course).

Thanks for those of you who pledged to the Acousmatic Theater Hour -- we kicked ass for a brand-new one-hour show and you guys were definitely a part of that.  Very special thanks for Master of Sparks for adopting me.

Thanks for being a bastion of sanity and reminding me that, no matter how dismal things may seem, there is actually a place on the internet where a bunch of relative strangers, living in different places, with varied opinions, can get along pretty well.

Thanks for the laffs, especially but not exclusively KtB, J. Garbage, Buffcoat, Wes, and Chris L.

BIG THANKS to Neil Numberman for the caricature, which I use all the time.

Thanks for all the viral videos, .gifs, pics, and links.

Thanks for the general wisdom regarding recipes, finance, exercise, etc.

Thanks for turning me on to (or convincing me to revisit): The Dusty Show with Clay Pigeon, Guided by Voices, New Bomb Turks, Let The Right One In, Broadcast, The Wu-Tang Clan & associates, Kelly Clarkson, Look Around You, Mitch Hedberg, The Olivia Tremor Control, Animal Collective & associates, RPG, The Apples in Stereo, Justice, Santogold, Super Furry Animals, Billy Childish, all the stuff on the Gulcher label, St. Vincent, Comedy Death Ray, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Dr. Feelgood, C86, The Ealing Comedies, and countless other things that I'm forgetting right now.

I would like to thank everyone that I've ever encountered and exchanged views with on this board, up to and including anyone that despises me. If only because it would be impossible to do so in my day-to-day life, I have an unconditional respect and feeling of goodwill for everyone on this board.

I would like to specifically thank everyone in the New York area that I have cultivated friendships with, including Groteface Killah, Neil Numberman, Ramsey, and especially Spoony, for it dawns on me that he remains a friend even though I believe he has never seen me in a sober state.

I would like to apologize to Fido, to whom I have been a bad neighbor and FOT. I have not met this nice man in person even though he lives two blocks away from me. This is my fault, and I hope to rectify this soon.

Just realized this: 777! Post of the Angel!

Well, Ted Leo, I guess.

I'll second that. If it wasn't for his rap battle with MC Steinberg I'd still be watching L&O: SVU (if I had bought a converter box and my TV still broadcast)  on Tuesdays. I prefer the Best Show.

I have been a member of this forum for only a few months. But I can say without reservation that this is, by far, the best message board I have ever had the privilege to be a member of. There's humor, intelligence, and wisdom in abundance on this forum and I enjoy visiting and posting here.

The FOT are good people and it's a pleasure to interact with all of you. Thanks for everything!

Thanks to all the FOT I've met in person - the list is surprisingly long at this point, and getting longer! - all of whom I've really enjoyed meeting and hanging out with. Which in itself is pretty amazing (and unlikely, statistically speaking). Looking forward to more Waiting Boyfriends next time I'm in NY (it's a drink, you creeps). All the FOT multiplatform communication (Facebook, twitter) is also great and has definitely rushed several FOT acquaintances into full-on FOT friendships.

Thanks to "The Chris L Show with Wes" for always providing solid entertaining distraction in the chat and on the boards. To KtB, NN and all the other frighteningly creative FOT. And to a certain Cunt in California who keeps on fighting the war of the just.

And a very special thanks to Andy, for sending me the amazing cross-stitched "Now is the time for us to gather together and celebrate those things we like and think are fun" sign. I still have no idea why he did it and what I've done to deserve it, but I absolutely love it.

Thanks to Dorvid for being awesome last summer.  Other last summer FOTs:  The lovely and talented Grote, who I also met, and who looks like his caricature.  And A.M. Thomas and his lovely sister G. whose board name I forget for scoring me tickets for the July 4th WFMU show last summer.

Special thanks to all the FOT who've engaged in my music piracy schemes!

Also, thanks to all the FOT whose identities I've stolen due to a bug in the Simple Machines forum that no one knows about yet.

I'd like to thank all the FOT who've provided kind words, encouragement and assistance as I've entered into a career of violent crime, human trafficking and moral degeneracy. I couldn't have done it without you guys! Thanks for always being there and offering a helping hand. It hasn't always been easy, and I also owe a lot to those FOT who have done so much to help me elude capture over the last 18 months. It means a lot, more than you know.

Thanks to hugman and Steve in North Hollywood- you take my trips in LA to the next level, even when we dont see each other and merely exchange text messages during our missed connections at the farmer's market, when youre stuck at work instead of out drinking, etc.  we've got to work on this LA FOT meetup thing, seriously.

also, thanks to dave from knoxville for making my FOT christmas the best it could be.  it was a good day, and ironically, i was reading old blog posts and came across the post in which i described how excited i was to see a package from TN on the table after a long day at work.  truly, the best.

thanks to the FOT who have exchanged/bartered with me in the FOT Barter thread.  yes yes, there are still more of you who are waiting on things and i will get them to you asap.  i feel like a goon not sending them but finances have prevented any further bartering on my half.  this next paycheck, however, i have set aside the funds for sending out your goods instead of eatching sushi and drinking beer.  thanks for your patience, youre all saints.

thanks to A.M. Thomas and Gore Marie for coming to memphis last year for Gonerfest, easily one of the funnest times ive had in memphis.  fingers are crossed that Gonerfest this year will find me returning to memphis as a resident once more (finally!).  heres to hoping that more FOT (if any) will be at gonerfest this year.

thanks to the FOT who donated to relay for life; i brought in the most amount of money on my team this year.  thank you!!

thanks to Julie for considering a vacation in phoenix.  this place sucks, i cant believe you would vacation here, but im the only FOT here so the company wouldve been welcomed.  one day, we'll get each other drunk.

thanks to Wes for the BEST posts.  im not on your FOT radar, im sure, but youre so clever and funny, i dont even give a shit what you look like.  stay hidden.

thanks to Sarah for your posts.  i would explain why, but it would sound silly.  just know that i love your posts.

thanks to Martin (sweden).  youre my FOT crush what else can i say!

thanks to John Junk for grunt cunt.

thanks to the FOT who make their living off of drawing and writing and photography.  you inspire me every day to do what i gotta do- no more office jobs for me.

thanks to samir for sending me the audio book, Things I've Learned From Women Who have Dumped Me.  it has made plane rides and road trips tolerable.

thanks to jake in memphis.  no, not that jake, the other jake.  the one who sent me the link to the reigning sound, live from goner records album.  youve reconnected me with something that is very special to me in ways that no one will know.  thank you thank you thank you.

thanks to JP for the tax advice.

thanks to Alvaro for indirectly resulting in a string of terrible dates.  trust me, its not as bad as it sounds.  ive got enough writing material to write a mini-novel.  but also thanks to Alvaro for getting me back on the horse to start writing again.  you pushed me to do it and i trust your judgement.  ill be sending you more of my work soon.  (PS im also drawing- poorly- can you believe it?!)

thanks to Andy for being my christmas FOT last year.  i had a really fun time putting your package together.  thanks for being patient on my tardiness of one particular item.

ive got be forgetting people...i know it.  speak up.

Last night we had a wind/rain/lightning storm. Since we never have wind around these parts, I am pretty sure our power lines are held together with twist ties. Anyway, I was listening to The 6 Hour Best Show last night, hanging out in the chat when the power went off. It came on about twenty minutes later (missed the Julie Show, dammit) and when I tried to get back in the chat it said that I could not log in because someone else was logged in with my user name. I was bummed. I had a horrible day and was really looking forward to the show and the chat to cheer me up. I PMed B_Buster and twittered that I needed an admin to log me out. A little while latter I was no longer logged in.

So a HUGE thank you to whichever FOT admin helped me out. I would have been fine without the chat because the show itself was incredible, but just getting that little bit of help after a day of no advancement in numerous uphill battles...again...thank you.

You guys are so nice about Tom letting me take up 20 minutes of The Best Show! All of you FOTs have been so supportive and encouraging! I'm one of you, so don't think I'll forget any of you when I'm at the top! I'm going to go tell my boss right now that I'm moving on with my life and don't need this crummy job anymore. I guess I'll have to stay here until the end of this week, but I'm ready to get started now! Thank you so much for inspiring me and giving me the motivation to follow my dreams!

-julie

P.S. Tom, if you need help discussing new bits or ideas for your next show, feel free to call my secretary (before tomorrow at 5:00) and she'll let you know a good time to call me. I really happy to help!

I have several thanks.

Many, many thanks to Leah aka iambaronvontito for being my guide in Memphis.  I feel like I haven't thanked you enough for that.  I would have been lost, literally, without your help.  Yeah, you rule, Leah.

Thanks to Emily for being an awesome Internet + real life friend and helping me look for jobs.  One of the nicest people I've ever met.

Thank you to Forrest for getting me Tim and Eric tickets and sending me one of the coolest gifts I've ever received in the secret santa exchange (a record signed by some of the funniest people in the world).  So awesome.

Thanks to John aka yesno for knowing a lot about computers and life and stuff and for coming to the Feelies/Sonic Youth show.

Thanks to Jason Grote, Sarah, Martin, Hugman, and Dave from Knoxville for being inspirational people.

This message board is the only one I find worth posting on anymore because pretty much everyone here is great.  Thanks FOT.

I just got back from NY this morning, and some thanks are in store:

Thanks to Forrest for taking the time to meet me for lunch on his only day off. It was definitely the highlight of my trip to be able to hang out with my longtime favorite FOT.
Also, thanks for being a gentleman and resisting the tempting opportunity to make fun of my cousins' extreme aversion to walking.

Thanks to andrewvdill for taking the entire afternoon to show me some neat places in NYC. You got soaked to the skin in the pouring rain-- but like the Best Show, you can't be topped and you can't be stopped!
Going to The Strand and the Highline was pretty much awesome.  I enjoyed meeting you and getting to know you! You were a great tour guide!

Thanks to mattmaher for making my trip 20x better by actually taking off work early to hang out with us Thursday evening. Thanks for letting me talk your head off about art at MoMA, and it was awesome having your company for dinner. It was great getting to meet and hang out with you- I felt like I made a new friend! You are top-notch, sir.

And thanks Emma for going to NY a few years ago and starting a thread about stuff to do: I copied and pasted a ton of stuff from the thread and printed it out. On a side note that has nothing to do with NY, also thank you Emma for simply being cool.

And thanks to FOT who replied to my NY thread with things to do: I definitely did a ton of stuff that you recommended!

And thanks to Scot for planning to meet us at the PFT show in Atlanta tomorrow night! I am excited!

Now that I've said some thanks related to my trip to New York, I am remembering other non-NY-related things that deserve mentions- but since there are so many of them I will just say THANK YOU FOT for being so nice and like a big family! I appreciate you more than you can imagine!
