Title: Healthy Snacks
Post by: colonel panic on May 28, 2009, 04:23:55 PM
I need healthy snacks. What are they?

Backstory: I quit smoking and caffeine. I eat well and exercise. But, out of the blue, I've developed adult on-set snack disorder. Mostly it's Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and Gummi Bears.

I need some healthy and delicious alternatives at my desk so I don't wander over the snack machine.

I'm open organic stuff and health-food store type stuff but I just don't know anything about it.

a good trail mix would be a step in the right direction. just make sure if it had dried fruit that it's not coated in sugar (who came up with that, the diabetes industry?).  trader joe's tempting trail mix is awesome. it's probably the least healthy mix they have but it's good and a helluva lot better than reece's anything.
Avoid corn syrup no matter what dfk says.  Also avoid asparthame.  That shit will kill you all over the place.
Fruit is always kick ass, but make sure if you eat fruit with a high glycemic index (like pineapple) that you balance it out with a low glycemic (like blueberries). A chart of glycemic index ranges for fruit is easily googleable.
When I worked in an office, they had candy and junk out the ass, so i brought in those tangelo cuties from trader joe's and carrots.  I find raw carrots to be a snooze, but when you eat one with a sliver or orange or tangerine, it's like you're eating some sort of tonic.

veggies I like eating raw are cucumbers, snap peas, and red peppers.  And drink lots of water. it's good for the body and makes you less snacky.

organic fruit leather is good from time to time.

organic chocolate bars beat the shit out of candy bars.

trader joe's chocolate dipped macaroons are insanely good and only have about 80 calories a piece.  their white cheddar popcorn is addictively good and very low on calories, too, if you can avoid eating the whole bag at once (which I rarely can).  For stuff like that, put some in a bowl. if you're digging straight outta the bag, you'll never stop.

hope this helps.

Nuts are a good, filling snack. Cereal is a classic - but obviously something without added sugar and junk.

I've really been trying to cut down on junk food myself. I think most types of fruit are good. As far as vegetables go, I'd go with the usual stuff-carrots, celery, etc. Cucumbers are especially good to munch on.

hugman's right about drinking lots of water. Do that, as well.

Sun Chips are yummy! And they have good commercials.

I like yogurt a whole lot. Also, bagels.

This is all very helpful. I 'know' that I need to quit eating junk food but just talking about it helps and the suggestions give me a database to start from.

The glycemic stuff is over my head so I'll have to do some research.

Frozen red grapes. Gives you the sweet fix, and since they are frozen you're not going to pour through a whole bunch at once.

If you eat a little of that crazy ass super dark chocolate you won't be tempted to keep on binging.  I like the spicy chocolate mixed with chili peppers.  It actually makes me hallucinate a little.

These are really good:

Rosemary Roasted Cashews

1.25 lbs raw cashew
2 tbs coarsely chopped fresh rosemary leaves
1/2 tsp cayenne
2 tsp agave nectar
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tbs melted butter

Oven to 375, then toast the cashews.  While still hot, mix everything together.  The agave can be subbed out for brown sugar, and the levels of each can be tweaked to taste.

Skinny Cow chocolate frozen sandwiches are satisfying and you most likely won't want more than one.  Also, those Edy's Strawberry Popscicles are incredible.

pineapple raisins and watermelon are pretty much all the really high glycemic fruits.  so if you eat them it's better to have something else thrown in like apples or berries or grapes.

I sit in a cubicle all day where you just want to graze all day. It sucks. Especially because my cubicle is right by the break room where the, shall we say "rotund" ? people in my office bring their pizza and tacos and stuff. It smells good. Oh man.

I bring grapes or cherries, carrots, cucumbers - yeah, veggies. They work for the most part. Roasted almonds are good as long as I only bring a small portion with me so I don't eat a ton of 'em.

I like Soy Joy bars a lot, especially the apple ones.

Other snacks: yogurt, a sugar-free Jell-O pack and a great one in the summer: ice chips. You satisfy the need to munch on something and it's just water.

Bananas and ice-cold water (maybe a little peanut butter).

- Skinny Cow Fudge Bars
- Edy's Fruit Bars (popsicle size)
- Wasa crackers spread with either light cream cheese or laughing cow light cheesy stuff (It's kind of processed but tastes yum)
- Carrots with Hummus or dill dip (mix dill with light sour cream)
- Sliced Cucumbers sprinkled with a bit of salt
- Cereal (like corn flakes... but only eat a little at a time)

I try to stay away from nuts and trail mix because I eat too much of it and it's very high in calories. Although the protein is good for you, a serving of nuts should be smaller than a handful. Same with sunflower seeds.
