I just booked a two-night trip (that we can't really afford... but I don't care) to go to Ocean City MD for the weekend! Woo! We're doing the totally trashy thing and staying in an overpriced, crappy hotel right on the boardwalk. I'm so excited!!
We're also going to the Outer Banks later this year for free.
What are y'all doin this summer?

I'm moving to Montreal in a couple of weeks. I'm finishing my current job at the end of this week. I'm hoping to take just about the whole summer off and explore my new city!

Where on the Outer Banks?
Do most of you Yankees know where the Outer Banks are? Hint: south of Cape May.

We're staying at/on Kill Devil. I've never been there before. From what I understand it will be the opposite of the tourist trap experience that we're getting in two weeks in OC. And I'm excited to go somewhere where both BBQ and steamed crabs are the fare of choice. Num. (Naturally, I eat my way through vacations...)

We stayed on the Outer Banks a few times, near Salvo. Very nice.
This year, we are camping for a week on Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy.

You zung me, son! I've never heard of Salvo - apparently I'm a homestateadummy.
Erika - the OBX are very beautiful and comparatively uncrowded and relaxed. The lighthouses are fun if you feel like a longish drive one day. Kill Devil Hills has the Wright Brothers' memorial, which is interesting. Those dudes were crazy to think that people could fly.

Are you going to see the sea bathing wild horses?

I went camping in Ocean City. I thought we were staying on the beach. We stayed in an rv park and it rained and I cried. Then I got over it and had fun.

I am spending a few days in New York City with my cousins and annoying sister-in-law of my cousin. I wanted to stay here: http://www.leffertsmanorbedandbreakfast.com/our_brooklyn_bed_and_breakfast
but instead she booked us for here:

phth.
I was going to get to go to Miami/Pensacola FL but I couldn't get off work.
I am excited about NYC, though. I'm just scared that all they'll want to do is shop, cos I don't have much moolah.

Right now I'm spending a couple of weeks in the town I grew up, Karlskrona. With my folks. It's half vacation, half work though, since we're emptying out my grandfather's house (he's fine, just moved into a nursing home). Celebrating Midsummer's Eve on Friday, which is a big deal - biggest party, longest night of the summer.
I'll be spending most of the summer in Malmö, working. Couple of days in Stockholm in August, then a quick trip to the French riviera in late August to celebrate my dad turning 60.
That's about it.

Don't forget your TV and The Great Outdoors on Blu-Ray.

Julie I think I'll just be seeing sea bathing rednecks, to be honest with you! We stayed in one of those trailer parks when I was little and it flooded. I thought it was the best vacation ever, but my mother was horrified that my brother and I were swimming in flood water. (At the time I was 7 and had no concept of how polluted flood water in OC would be... we just thought my mum was a pill)

I just got back from my summer vacation, MaxFunCon. It was great time with a lot of amazing people.

Hawaii next month for a couple book signings! Maybe I'll meet Mel!

Not my intention at all, Buffcoat. I married a woman from south of the Mason/Dixon line, so I kinda cheated in that way. She taught me about the Outer Banks, and I taught her about being an uptight asshole.

Oh you know it. I believe that includes a scene of a bear chasing people around in a funny way.

Outer banks for a whole week! I cannot wait!!!
We're staying here:

I'm sure other FOT's took vacations... what were they?

I went to the mall a couple of times.

Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Wife's family has house. On the cheap.
Me: Swimmers' ear
ear infection
burst eardrum. :'(
My 4-year-old discovered he loved jumping into water. ;D
But then he never wanted to stop. :-\

I went to the interior of British Columbia with my wife and baby and stayed with some relatives.
I got to ride a motorcycle for the first time, dirtbiking up a mountain! Also I tried my hand at scuba diving. All of this was free because my relatives have all this stuff and live on a little lake.
Another fun point was Bishop John Shelby Spong was speaking at this tiny little town accross the lake from where we were staying and we got to see that.
It was a good trip and it basically just cost us two airline tickets.

Arundel Mills? They have a movie theater that makes it feel just like you're in EGYPT. Totally tubular.

We're staying for free down at the beach, too. The flip-side is that we're staying with 10-12 people so there may be nights of sleeping on the floor. But I'm ok with that.

Wow, sizeable FOT presence on the OBX* this summer. My wife and I drove from Roanoke to Ocracoke Island, which was totally amazing. You have to drive onto a ferry -- there aren't any bridges connecting the place to mainland NC or Hatteras.
We booked a campsite at the National Park there, but the first night the mosquitos were incredibly fucking awful (I looked like a leper), and I realized I forgot our pillows in VA, so we gave up and pulled into the first B&B we saw. We were incredibly lucky -- there were no other rooms anywhere on the island, and the people who had booked the room never showed up. It was an entire apartment with a kitchen and everything, and it wasn't too expensive.
We didn't take pictures, but it was an awesome vacation. We basically drank beer, ate shellfish, barbecued, read, and swam for 4 solid days. I got 2 pairs of Birdwell Beach Britches on Yesno's recommendation (they are indeed great), and ate the best figs of my life. We played one CD in the rental car the whole week because we never had to drive longer than 5 minutes, so whenever I hear Beat Happening's "Black Candy" I'm instantly transported back there.
Next week I'm going to Chicago. It's more of a business trip because I have a play going up there, but my wife is coming along too and hopefully we'll do some fun stuff.
*This is what my beer cozy calls it

The wife and I are going to Puerto Rico on our first for-real, baby-free trip in a very long time. Very excited-slash-terrified.

I'll be going back home to Nepal for all of September!!! It's been almost 7 years, so my vacation is bound to be most spectacular.

I didn't realize so many people went to the Outer Banks. Coming from Virginia, that's all anyone does for a beach vacation. Last month, my wife and I stayed in a house in Corolla with 10 friends and their infants. Fun in a lot of ways, but a whole lot of chaos. Also weird to be at the age where "vacation with friends" involves less drinking and more snacks/storytimes/diaper changes.

Thanks, Martin! I fully intend to. If I manage to take any halfway decent pictures, I shall post them here.

We are going to Martha's Vineyard next week. I will be tweeting about any Obama sightings. @JonFrmMaplewood

I went to Atlantic City. Lost 20 bucks at the slot machines. Bought some salt water taffy. Pawned off some gold jewelry. Took some pictures. The usual stuff.
-
Thanks for reminding me. I gotta order a water-proof case for my canon elph so's I can take pitchers of fishies when I'm in Fiji in two weeks.

That's what they call ATMs that are right on the sidewalk instead of encased in a glass lobby. I spent my vacation sleeping under one!

I'm in Cape Cod right now. So, naturally, there's a hurricane coming.

The wife, dog and I spent a week in Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana (http://www.flickr.com/photos/paddysat/collections/72157621869657212/).

Guy moves from Nepal to North Dakota, does web design work for a guy from Sweden he met on the message board for a North Jersey based radio show. Am I missing anything?

We went to Charleston, SC last week. Swapped apartments with someone there (join couchsurfing.com). Don't recommend driving from NY to SC but it was fun. Here's a pic of our dog Lucy frolicking on the beach!

The green, green sea. Southeastern Atlantic rulz!

So next week I'm going out to Chicago for the fifth time in as many years, since my girlfriend's family lives in the area. I've naturally seen all the big sights (Wrigley, Sears, Field Museum, Navy Pier), and a lot of the less famous ones (Robie House, U-505).
I love Chicago, and I know there's a wealth of interesting things there that I haven't seen. Any Chicagoan FOTs have any suggestions off the beaten path? I don't want to force myself to endure a 'Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!' taping, 'cuz that's all I got.
