Title: RIP Clark Sabine
Post by: Come on, Jason on June 17, 2009, 05:40:40 PM
Sad news from DC.  Clark Sabine, my friend and much-beloved figure in DC rock, passed away last night after a long battle with melanoma.  He was 33.

Clark was the singer/songwriter/guitarist for beloved DC bands Motorcycle Wars, Disconnect, and most recently Statehood (http://www.myspace.com/statehood), who likely due to their Dismemberment Plan ties, earned some love from Shovel and The AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/articles/statehood,7381/).  This despite the fact the band only released one album, and only played a handful of shows outside of DC.  They were pretty far along on a second album, and Clark was apparently working on Statehood's second album all the way up until the end.  Literally.  He was tracking stuff in the hospice.  Serious musician.

Anyone who's spent 5 minutes with the guy could attest to his incredible charm, energy, and sense of humor.  To see someone with that much life-force leave at the age of 33 is devastating, and naturally a ton of people down here are struggling with this news.

I had the privilege of videotaping 5 or 6 of their 20 or so shows, including their first one at The Galaxy Hut, and two shows at Fort Reno.  The one below was shot at Fredericksburg All Ages. I think it best showcases not only their talent, but Clark's infectious spirit.

I've chatted with a few of you here about this band, so thought it not inappropriate to share the news, and also to just remind people to get those moles checked out.  Seriously.

Rest in Peace, Clark.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, Dorvid. My grandfather succumbed to melanoma. It's horrible, as is any kind of cancer.

I'm lucky to have seen Statehood perform. They weren't just good for a local band; they were good all around.

Sorry about the loss, Dorvid. Cancer is awful all around, and I hate that it claimed someone as young as your friend.
The video posts are great, thanks for posting.
