Tom,
I figure you'd be the best shot at helping me out, but everyone is free to contribute. I'm planning on doing a radio show with strictly New Jersey artists. Part because I feel out of place here in Connecticut, partly because I have a bone to pick with someone who doesn't respect the wealth of talent born, bred, and based in the Garden State. I'm trying to avoid lame stuff (IE Bon Jovi) and this is what I have so far. I need a few more to fill out the rest of the show, but here's my list:
Yo La Tengo
Springsteen
Titus Andronicus
Ted Leo
the Feelies
Gaslight Anthem
The Wrens
The Individuals
Redman
Parliament
Frat Dad
Monster Magnet
Screaming Females
Ducktails
When I Was 12
Real Estate
The Black Hollies
Any help anyone?

The Bongos
Misfits
Funkadelic
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Kool and the Gang (don't laugh)
-
The Vivian Girls have New Brunswick roots
Roadside Graves out of Metuchen have a new record out
A lot of good punk bands in NB now - Screamales, Silent Way, Seasick, Zhenia Golov, Mirrors and Wires!
R. Stevie Moore lives in Jersey.
1910 Fruitgum Company
Chisel
Being from CT, but going to school in New Jersey I'm almost willing to say New Jersey Rules, Connecticut drools.
The music, at least, is way better. Who does CT have outside of like Magik Markers? Hatebreed?

I think Clap Your Hands and Say, Yeah! (or whatever the dumb punctuation is) hails from Weslyan. Not sure where they're from individually though.

Rob Hyman, lead singer of the Hooters, though, did go to my high school. The co-writer of "All You Zombies" graced those hallways.
-
Adrenalin O.D. (Elmwood Park)
Trixter (Paramus)
Spiral Jetty (Hoboken)
The Gas Station Dogs (Newbridge)
Danielson (Clarksboro)
-
The Cucumbers!
-
Bouncing Souls
Rye Coalition (some of Black Hollies were in it, harder)
American Standard
Trixter -- nice, Omar.
-
Love 'em or otherwise, Fountains of Wayne.
-
Any Jersey Fresh fans out there?
Also, the East Orange hip-hop scene: Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, The Fugees/Lauryn Hill.
-
Thursday.
(well, i like 'em)

Spent!

A friend of mine saw Trixter at one of those Jersey shore summer extravaganzas ages ago, but he's never forgotten their intro: "Give it up for Trixter!" It's been a running gag of his ever since. At the most inopportune time he'll just say, "Give it up for Trixter!" It never fails to bring a smile. Give it a try.

Isn't Southside Johnny from Jersey?
-
I believe Best Show favorites The DC Snipers are from NJ. Also, the very fine Personal & the Pizzas.
-
Mark Kozelek from The Red House Painters. He has a song called New Jersey and another one called Morristown.
Also, I think members of the Jurassic 5 were from New Jersey.
-
Nicole Atkins is also from NJ.

I'm almost sure Mr. Kozelek is from Ohio.
-
Whoops. You're right. I should've done some research.
-
I believe Von Scharpling (http://friendsoftom.com/bands.shtml) is a Jersey band as well.
-
I believe Best Show favorites The DC Snipers are from NJ. Also, the very fine Personal & the Pizzas.
Personal and the Pizzas are frauds. They market themselves as NJ rock n' roll, but those dudes are from the Bay area.
Their music is still pretty good, though.

I just broke my Personal & the Pizzas 7" in protest.
-
I look at "NJ Rock and Roll" as a style, just like all the "Brooklyn delis" around the country.
-
Shades Apart, Crucial Youth, Hogan's Heroes, Vision & other notable hahdcoah bands.
-
Hogan's Heroes! I forgot about their existence until just now. I had something they made. A cassette? A t-shirt? I'll never remember.

Wow. Their music must have really affected you if you can't remember if it was a cassette or a t-shirt.

Well, you know. Mid-80s Jersey hardcore. Not a lot of it stands the test of time.
-
I'd like to second DanB's mention of R. Stevie Moore. He deserves a spot on your show in my opinion.

Yowza. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Time to toil in the music library, grab what I can, cull anything that doesn't fit off the list, and put the show together. This is sort of an ongoing thing, but I will post the playlist on my webpage (look under the pic of Billy Mays) when I do air the show.
Again, thanks everyone.

I dunno if you're referring to Playtime With Jason Grote (http://wfmu.org/playlists/am), and apologies if I'm being presumptuous in assuming so, but that makes more sense than giving R. Stevie Moore a slot on the Best Show. But anyway, rest assured that we are fans and will be airing some of his work at some point. We try not to overlap too much with other WFMU DJs but that doesn't mean we can't do so occasionally.

It's Moorestown, not Morristown. It's an awesome song and one of the only ones I've ever heard about My Area, New Jersey. A lifetime of explaining that I went to school in Moorestown, only to have Morristown thrown back at me, makes me especially sensitive to that type of thing. Mark Kozelek spent some time in New Jersey, hence a ton of Jersey-related songs, but yes, as was mentioned before, he is from Ohio.
-
Speaking of Morristown...
A question for anyone who knows:
I've read some conflicting reports, but I remember Tom Verlaine mentioning in an interview on WFMU a couple years ago (unfortunately, I don't remember who's show. Gaylord maybe?) and he said something about growing up or living in Morristown. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
-
Dunno about Verlaine, but I'm pretty sure Rich Myers (that's Richard Hell to you) is from Jersey.
-
Just reminded from soundtrack thread: Angelo Badalamenti lives in New Jersey.
-
Hudson Falcons are a Jersey band. They're great if you're into MC5 inspired working class OI music.

So cool to see this. Two favorite bands. I may have seen more Hunchback shows than anyone (except probably an Erg).

Go to the definitive source. Might I even say the ultimate NJ band argument settler?
http://www.topnjbands.com/ (http://www.topnjbands.com/)
Give "Armchair Quarterbacks" by Asbury Park Angel a spin. Such sublime yodelling. It's also cool to the that Yasgur's Farm is still breaking new ground.
-
The Mummies
Also all of those things that Ted Leo's brother Chris was in.
-
The Mummies
The Mummies were from San Fransisco, but they played Maxwell's a bunch... unless there's some different Mummies.
-
Well, the band the Myddle Class is from NJ. This group had Dave Palmer who went onto Steely Dan and Charles Larkey who was married to Carole King. This way you can now play Porpoise Song (Theme from Head) on your program. Also, it should be noted that The Myddle Class played with the Velvet Underground for one of the VU's very first shows @ Summit, NJ High School.

This thread got me to finally register.
Awesome NJHC:
Rorschach
Deadguy
Endeavor
108
Turning Point
NJHC I'm not embarrassed to admit listening to in the past:
Policy Of 3
Ensign (the Indecision 7"s only)
Mouthpiece
Hands Tied
-
I didn't see her in the list, but maybe I didn't look hard enough, but Patti Smith is from NJ originally.
-
Also all of those things that Ted Leo's brother Chris was in.
Native Nod (w/ brother Danny, later of tHE hOLY cHILDHOOD, and Dave "Little Danny" Lerner, formerly of TL/Rx, later of Spectacular Bird, but I'm not 100% sure if he's Jersey)
The Van Pelt
The Lapse
Vague Angels
other Jersey bands:
The Undead
Saves The Day
-

I'm pretty sure I saw at least a few of those bands at some shows at the Harwan Theatre. And/or some JC Dobbs 5$ shows. Hard to remember exactly, because alot of the NJHC bands had a lot of samey samey sounding names.

Ha! I didn't know the New Jersey thing was a part of the act -- what a deep schtick. In a way, it's kinda like singing with a fake British accent. It's so funny to since they are a Bay Area band, but I think the main guy isn't even a transplant from NJ, but from Detroit or elsewhere in the midwest.

Wonderful news:
Frontiers Records has announced the signing of TRIXTER for the worldwide release of the band's reunion album in the spring of 2012.
Formed in Paramus, New Jersey in 1984, TRIXTER's self-titled debut album attained gold status (reaching #28 on The Billboard 200 in 1990), and spawned three minor hit singles: "Surrender" (#72), "One In A Million" (#75), and "Give It To Me Good" (#65). Despite the fact that none of the singles made the Top 40 or garnered much radio airplay, the videos for all three tunes were in heavy rotation on MTV (especially "Give It To Me Good", which was #1 on the channel for several weeks). A follow-up effort, "Hear", came out in 1992, but failed to reach the same commercial heights. The band recorded an album of cover songs, "Undercovers", in 1994, which garnered little commercial success, and TRIXTER broke up shortly after its release.
TRIXTER announced the reunion of its original lineup in 2007 and has since played a number of shows, including the Rocklahoma festival in 2008.
Comments TRIXTER guitarist Steve Brown: "The band has been playing together for the last four years, so making a new record is the next logical step. We are all very excited.
"The new CD will be entitled 'New Audio Machine' and is a classic style melodic hard rock album. All the sounds people have loved about TRIXTER will be there... Great songs, big guitar riffs, catchy vocals and a huge bottom end. A total big rock production!!!"
