Title: Sing-a-long songs
Post by: Matthew_S on June 29, 2009, 01:08:07 PM
My wife has requested a mix of great sing-a-long songs for an upcoming car trip.

Suggestions?

But seriously, is it for kids or grownups?

If kids, then They Might Be Giants "Here Come the ABC's" is a kick-ass album for singalongs.

If grown-ups, then "Ride On" by AC/DC is a nice singalong song for the car.

I would just play The Electric Six's Fire from beginning to end and sing along word-by-word, doing my best Dick Valentine impersonation.

Ideally kid-appropriate, or at least profanity-free.

In the same vein as They Might Be Giants, here are some Jonathan Richman songs:

-The Wheels on the Bus
-Abominable Snowman in the Market
-Ice Cream Man
-Dodge Veg-O-Matic
-'Rockin 'Rockin Leprechauns
-New England

They're all kid-friendly and fun to sing along with.

I wish by Skee-Lo usually gets the sing song started.

So much for Electric Six (and The Humpty Dance).

My kids like to sing along to Stereo Total songs that are in English.

I'm standing by my pick.  With a few sing-along bowdlerizations the kids may not understand Humpty's more ribald rhymes.  There may be an uncomfortable moment where you have to explain who MC Hammer is though.

It may also lead to a trip to Burger King.

Our kid likes to sing along to Minor Threat's cover of Stepping Stone. Occasionally we also like to sing along to the Immigrant Song, for maximum geekery and quizzical looks from other drivers.

Have a nice drive!

Absolutely anything by R. Kelley is fun to sing along to, but this one has easy lyrics to remember

my sister likes to plays this over and over during car rides

But this is probably by far the best driving song.
