I loved how Slapshot doubled for Mike Jackal's band, Punk, in this week's gem. That was my first punk show - Slapshot with Murphy's Law in the basement of the St. Louis AFW Union Hall.

Good ear, Hugman! Slap Shot was actually my first show ever, on an all-Boston bill, opening for Gang Green (though I didn't recognize them in the bit). I was a huge Murphy's Law fan, too, and saw them about 5-6 times. I have always regretted selling my green vinyl Arf Arf Arf. I re-bought all the other hardcore I miss, namely Bad Brain and the Minor Threats, but can't find those guys in any medium, legal or otherwise. Anyone got any leads?
Also loved the Gem, of course. Was that your doing, Martin?
-
It was. Gems going topical!
-
I always forget that it's been two weeks since the last Gem, so every (other) Monday it's a welcome surprise to see something new downloadin' courtesy of Captain Malmo.

That's funny. Slapshot was both of our first shows. Gang Green is an equally hilarious band to pair Slapshot with. At my show, you had Slapshot singing "Straight Edge In Your Face" followed directly with Jimmy Gestapo pouring pitchers of beer on the crowd.
Thanks for the gems, Martin.

I didn't listen to the Gem today because it's a call I already had on my computer, but I remember them playing the song "In Your Face" on that one.
Also, I don't know where you're located, but I saw a copy of the first Murphy's Law on green vinyl for sale at Academy Records in Brooklyn the other day. It was 30 bucks though, which is more than it usually sells for as far as I know.

Thanks, Timmy! I live in Brooklyn but am in Virginia for work right now -- hopefully it will still be there when I get home. I'd pay 30 clams for that even though I would probably only listen to it once in a while.

You mean Brooklyn? Someone has a high opinion of himself.

But Pitchfork said it was over!

No problem! I didn't mention it in my other post but it's right on the wall when you walk in.

I've been meaning to ask Tom if he ever got his $10,000 from the lead singer of the Clash.

I'm guessing that Brett Haskins is the guest Tom was chasing for a year, in order to collect that money.

Maybe he can make amends with the Gorch by siccing him on Brett and splitting the money.

Hey Timmy, I've been meaning to thank you -- I came back to NY about 3 weeks ago and snagged it. A bunch of other records, too -- that place is dangerous.

You grab Back With A Bong, too and start a little circle pit to that dumb cavity creeps song?
-
Shaggy, No problem man! I hear you about that store, they constantly get stuff in so when I'm down there it's easy to drop money there.
Hugman, that song is the best! I went to a show in some kid's backyard in Jersey like 5 or 6 years ago. When I got there I found out it was a punk show / pool party. One of the bands covered Cavity Creeps and I looked over and there were a bunch of people moshing in the pool. It was great.
-
pool pit! have you ever been in a sarcastic pit? I have. great fun.
-
huge respect to those behind the gems podcast 8)
love every clip chosen so far.. the ryan adams record reviews were an awesome change of pace. any extended tom rants/stories/interviews tossed in between the classic bits would be appreciated
-

My friend and I started a sarcastic pit at a Ben Folds Five show. The more fragile looking indie rockers were none too pleased.

Mine was while I was working at amoeba. A horrible band was playing an in-store and they started a cover of kashmir. A bunch of us were under the stairs to the mezzanine (for those of you that've been there) and I started a little circle pit. Soon there were about 10 people in this tiny area moshing it up and Lance Rock (who worked there at the time and is now known as the host of Yo Gabba Gabba) started doing the P-Diddy rap from the Godzilla 2000 soundtrack version at the top of his lungs and we all fell out laughing. So fun.
PS-I've never used the phrase "fell out laughing" before.

Quite possibly my favorite Best Show call ever. I could listen to it a million times. He has the most endearing voice.
-
Definitely one of the all-time greats.
Thanks Martin!
-
This is always hyped to me and it was well worth the wait.

I'd been meaning to find this call b/c I love H. Jon's voice big time too, so this was very cool to see @ iTunes this week.
-
I haven't listened yet.
But I speculate that there will be Shackeltons involved.
-
Love love love the Smirnoff Ice Gem.
Is this the first Gem not to feature Wurster?

I don't think he was on the Ryan Adams unfair record review.

I loved this week's episode. The best was that listening to Jon Benjamin I kept picturing Coach McGurk, so when Tom talked I pictured Brenden Small. It was very amusing.

This is a quick experiment that is kind of like the morning zoo pace segment but just condensing a normal bit (recent gem'd Shout Network Spring Lineup) in to about 6 minutes. Please give it a listen: http://www.divshare.com/download/8389826-61b

Nice job Mr. Hannity.
You should do this full-time.

Best Show Gems for Sept. 7th - "The Cheetah"
"Well, my format is I'm going to stab you."
I loved when Tom called in as a character on another line and harassed people. I remember a particularly great instance of this when he called in as a fan of the Former Caller Who Cannot Be Named: "Hey C__ J___! I like your style! . . . I LIKE YOUR STYLE!!"

Yes.

I cannot hear "She's So European" without thinking of the lamer Sloan songs of the "Action Pact" era...
Buff - this will have to suffice as my critical re-evaluation of your mixtapes for now!
