Remember when I was in New York last month and tried to get you together for photographs on the High Line? It was on very short notice and it rained; even though several people tried to attend, I was the only one who actually made it there.
I still think it would be an honor and great fun to document you guys and I'd like to do that in the slightly more organized manner of my other projects. I've started The Friends Of Tom Photo Gallery on my website, www.lisajaneperskyphoto.com. Steve in North Hollywood was good enough to go first. You can now see him, and how it's going to look and read my statement (when you get to the website, go to Galleries/Friends of Tom).
Anyone who participates gets a lovely (signed, if you like) 8.5 x 11 print of their picture. If you want to participate you can contact me here or through the website e-dress: lisa@lisajaneperskyphoto.com. If you're in/near or coming to NY or LA. let me know but if you're not, let me know anyway; I'll try to get to you during one or another of my trips.
Hugman, you're next!
And please tell me your thoughts on this. Looking forward to the adventure we will have. Lisa

seeing that photo of steve made my heart happy. this is a great idea! and the FOT post your picture thread is evidence that FOT are very photogenic people (despite their attempts to protest otherwise).
i hope more people volunteer for this.
-
I love this! Please figure out a way to get Spike photographed.
-
I love this! Please figure out a way to get Spike photographed.
But that would ruin the mystique.
-
Great idea! LJP, you should try connect with TBS staff + guests and do portraits of them as well!
-
I love it!
-
As I mentioned before, I am 100% behind this and you nailed it with Steve. A great start to a great project.
CONGRATULATIONS!
-
I am not usually this positive or effusive, but that is a great photo.
Well done everyone involved.
-
I'm lovin' it. I would have gone to your NY shoot if I were a long-time FOT.
-
I would have gone to your NY shoot if I were a long-time FOT.
I wasn't on the forum until recently and didn't have the nerve to call until last month. Time doesn't matter to me. If you are an FOT, you're in. If you want to be part of the project send me an email.

Hello Lisa Jane,
Missed you in chat Tuesday.
I can't wait for the Un-Unofficial Project.
Maybe then you can include New Port Richey in your travels.

GREAT photo of Steve.
GREAT idea.
-
Strange though. I always imagined Steve looking like Freddy Mercury.
-
Awesome idea! Great pic of Steve as well, though I always imagined him looking like Marc Bolan.
-
Lisa, I am completely honored, and it was so much fun meeting you and Andy!
Nate's gonna be so mad when he see's how cool that pic is ;D

Steve, that picture is SO good. I tip my hat to you, sir, for being the first in on this project of LJP.

Thank you, Steve! The pleasure was ours. First in is always bold, adventurous and admirable. Your portrait reflects that.
-
Smart project! Great photo!
Look forward to the rest!
-
Lisa, get to chicago...tons of FOTs here!
-
Lisa, get to chicago...tons of FOTs here!
I'll get there! Andy needs his Mr. Beef fix. I'll post travel plans as we go.
-
I'd be up for this, although I'm rarely in NY. But if you're ever in the Baltimore/DC area let me know :)
-

Definitely, Erika. Gotta have Erika. Supercaller! ;)
-
I love this idea. Terrific picture of Steve, too. I can't wait to see more.
-
LJP, you're officially my favorite movie star now, for your general overall state of awesomeness.
-
LJP, you're officially my favorite movie star now, for your general overall state of awesomeness.
Seconded! Thanks for your earlier compliments, Lisa. When I was in my first acting class, my teacher pulled me aside and said "From now on, you volunteer to go first every time I ask for a volunteer." It's served me well.
When do we get to see Hugman?
-
Great pic of Steve as well, though I always imagined him looking like Marc Bolan.
Now that's my idea of a nanny cum bodyguard.
LJP, if you're ever in Lubec, you are welcome to take a picture of me hiding behind my dogs.
-
And I will be glad to drive up there (over there?) and hide as much of my Brimsteadian frame as possible behind Sarah.
-
I bet you'd be completely obscured, Dave.
Another idea would be for the photo to be taken on a day like today: we could both stand about fifty feet away from the camera and become mere shades virtually imperceptible in the fog.
-
Sarah, I like your visual sense (and fog is my natural habitat). I must get to Lubec.
Dave, Thank you for your many kind words. I feel squinchy. Please go back to the impenetrable math now.
Steve, That teacher served her class well enlisting you as go-first guy. Did you ever get her back for it?
Next week, barring the proverbial hell/highwater; hugman!

Ha ha ha ! Get her back? I certainly tried to PAY her back by being a quality student. I think it may have been a few classmates that tried to GET her back.
-
Sorry Steve. I can't convince myself that that picture is really you. In my mind's eye you look just like mustachioed Freddy Mercury. I can't shake it.
-

I will have to live with that, Tedstud.
-
I pictured Steve as a blond. I mean, I was sure of it!
This project is totally awesome! I love it when experts, like Lisa, do their thing around TBS.
-
you guys think that photo does Steve any justice (which it does, but that's beside the point...), wait til you see the big thug in person! he's nothing short of making us all hug addicts. sweet guy and a treat to be around.
also, next time im in LA (planning for aug 28th), i would love to see one of 2 things: a) west coast FOT meetup or b) a FOT photo shoot with special guest hugman, the television star.
-
i'm getting my picture made tomorrow. ;D
-
looks like we'll have to work for the more expensive option: BPH, erech, various other FOT, bring your ladies and your animals...youre coming to LA.
-
What a great idea. So that is what Steve looks like? Why is it no one ever looks like I picture them? I can't wait to see the photo of Fredrics(?) dressed to the nines and looking nothing like a child molester.
-
Your mental image of me looks like Michael Jackson?
Way off. My hair's much lighter and my skin's a good deal darker.

Fudge, should have thought the grammar through. Sometimes I just rely on the fact that my grammar be's so excellent.

top notch shoot with LJP today. Did some climbing. Was asked to leave a place.

nothing too exciting. just a savvy hollywood hotel owner (super creepy looking run-down Hollywood Center Motel on Sunset) who shoo'd us out of his lot.

those are the paranoid owners, the ones who dont know what youre up to but would rather not ask afraid of what he'll encounter despite yur innocent intentions.
i cant wait to see this photo, hugman+LJP.

Guy did the shoo-ing movement with his hand from behind the window of his office. He was too hot or too scared to come outside and take us on. We don't need to advertise that guy's filthy hovel. We did better than that elsewhere.
hugman was stellar as expected.
Hey, hugs? Whaddaya mean "nothing too exciting"? Okay, maybe you meant "nothing too exciting" at the motel.
BUT, I believe I may have saved your life as you were crossing the street. (A car started mysteriously backing up on us in a lane of traffic.) We could have been crushed to death. It would have been a bad end to a good project.
Verrrry exciting. Also, I got to work with hugman. Did I say that?

Once a friend of mine was walking along a railway track reciting poetry into a ghetto blaster at 3am and a cop walked up behind him and started questioning him.

I was talking about the getting thrown out story. the shoot itself might have folded the fabric of time and space. thanks again for saving my life!
i'm in montreal now. hi.
PS When do we get to see some a' nem pics?
-
hugman pix are up at my website: lisajaneperskyphoto.com: Galleries , Friends of Tom.
I hope you enjoy the portrait. More to come.
Goodnight, everyone.
-
Stellar picture, hugman! You look....valiant!
Great photo, LJP!
-
that is great.
real men wear capes.
-
h is for hugman. way to go, you two.
-
Love the photo! Love the cape!
Such a great idea, Lisa. Thank you.
-
Yes! LOVE the Hugman photo. I haven't had internet access for over a week and that is by far the coolest thing to come home to. Have I mentioned how much I love this project? Because I really do.
looks like we'll have to work for the more expensive option: BPH, erech, various other FOT, bring your ladies and your animals...youre coming to LA.
I could do that with enough notice, actually. At least for a long weekend. But I have never called into the show. Not sure if I am worthy of this noble project.
-
Everyone who is into this, THANK YOU so much again, for being into this. I want to keep going and not lose momentum and it would be ideal to photograph you in the town where you live. This is a collaboration and the photo should be a statement about you and your FOTness. Where you live is part of that.
Right now, I'm in L.A. so any L.A. people who want in, please send me an email asap through my website lisa@lisajanepersky.com OR at lisajanepersky@aol.com (I know, aol?!?! Mortifying, but it's easier to drop lo-res pix into than the others and I have to do that a lot).
FOT's that live elsewhere, I've started a list with a map and I'm more than a little bit determined to travel. It will help me to plan that if I have a pretty comprehensive list of everyone who wants to be photgraphed so same as above except put your city and state (or your town and country) in the subject line of the email. Think about it and try to let me know over the next 2 weeks. I'll keep you posted on this.
If you've already written to me with this info, you don't have to do it again. You're on the list.
I know I've said this already but this project may take a little while. This is the fun stuff and the fun stuff has to come after and in between our family obligations and money gigs. As I'm coming up with a shooting itinerary please let me know if something doesn't fit your schedule. I want it to stay fun and to be as great as you guys are.
Help me to get the list and map finished by August 15.
And anyone who is following me on twitter, I thank you! Anyone not following me on twitter, probably not missing anything but updates on our project. If you followed me and I didn't follow you, please send me an email about that. It wasn't on purpose.
Does anyone know if PBR was picked up in the sweep of NJ pols. this week?
LJP

I've been coy about whether or not I would participate (I am a bit of a photo-phobe), but I absolutely would be willing to participate if you get within a couple hours drive, and the planets align. I assume you know where I am from.
All FOTs, get with this!!!
-

You're worthy.
-
Seconded.
-
What are the chances of getting James?
I want to check out that infamous toupee...
-
I can't think of why you'd want to visit Columbus, OH, but if so, count me in.
-
im very excited for this; im glad you clarified the logistics, LJP. i frequent LA but i dont live in LA*...ill see you in memphis.
*however, i have plans to be there the weekend of august 28th or september 18th (if west coast FOT want to make the drive down for an impromptu FOT meet up).
-
Has Spike expressed interest? He could maintain his mystique with a gimp mask...
-
Has Spike expressed interest?
Wait... do we know that LJP isn't the contracted photographer for "Weirdos Exposed"?
-
If you're ever driving from NYC to Boston, I live right off 95N, right before you enter Providence, RI - The Angriest City in The World.
-
Hugman's Pic is GREAT!!! And if you play the slideshow, it looks like he and I are about to team up to do something cool ... probably fight off a Cloverfield.
-

He's gotten that out of control, huh? Glad I bought a new sword in Pennsylvania. The blacksmith said it could slice through any cummerbund.
-

No interest from Spike. Is this bad?
-
I feel awful I missed the shoot on the Highline Park.
I feel ANGRY that no one went at all.
Please let me know the next time you're in or around NYC. I will drive the FOT to you like frightened cats.
-
I feel ANGRY that no one went at all.
EXACTLY! But I hope these first two AMAZING photographs will change that lazy mentality. This is a GREAT endeavor.
-
I feel ANGRY that no one went at all.
im angry and baffled. dont be shy, people.
-
Will definitely participate if you're in the DC area. If you're looking for a post-apocalpytic theme, the National Mall could easily serve as a charred landscape.
-
What are the chances of getting James?
I want to check out that infamous toupee...
How sad. Before reading the second line, I read the first as, essentially, "The unofficial FOT Photo Project" just got James'd.
You got James'd "unofficial FOT Photo Project"!
-
When his eyes aren't darting around the room like a caged animal, James isn't a bad-looking guy. Of all of us, I think James' photo has the most conceptual possibilities.
-
How can a caged animal dart around a room?
Sorry.
-
Good People, Here is the list (so far) of those of you who (I think) responded in the affirmative about having me take their photograph for our unofficial FOT project. Check, make sure you're on it, add location if it’s not there, and correct me if I'm wrong about anything.
Who else wants in? If you haven't contacted me yet, please read my note on page 4 of this thread about howsandwhats.
I'm shooting BeTheBoy on Monday. Yay!

what are the criteria for being included for this. I have a friend who probably would be, but he doesn't call nor has he set foot on this message board. But he's been a card-carrying member for years (longer than a good amount of people on your list thus far) and listens every week.
-
I may have just been in a Faygo-induced state when I signed up, though I'm not so sure that I actually did.
(and that's not to say that I would be completely opposed to being involved. Though, I do think that I may have just had a small stroke seeing my name at the top of the list!)
-
I wanted to sign up but you're probably not doing Canada, right?
-
I'd gladly sign up but I'm guessing you won't get to Europe any time soon. I tend to visit America from time to time though, so maybe if we're lucky...

It's hard to say how long people have been on this board for. They sometimes change their names.

Yeah, I was listening for a while before I signed up here, I think it's probably hard to go off of that. - I don't know what LJP's looking for but if I'm in town when she's in NYC, I'll try and get there ... I travel a lot for my job.

not really the point, but what you say is true.
-
i think hugman's point was despite not being on the board or calling, does a FOT card qualify someone to be part of the unofficial FOT photo shoots.
lighten up, ya'llzzz.

Seems like there are a few of us in Montreal. Let it be known if you're coming up here!

Here's the thing though, Bryan, everyone. It's not about where I might be going. Where I go has everything to do with who wants to be photographed for this specific project. I need to see how many peeps are where and then I will act accordingly even if I have to write something as odious as a grant proposal. So can I put you down as Montreal and willing? Are there more FOT's of Montreal who want in?
It's hard to say how long people have been on this board for. They sometimes change their names.
You've piqued my curiosity, munson. Whodja used to be?
And on this name change subject: Look at the Grote(s). He's trying to throw us off, isn't he?

I've always wanted to go there. Festoon the town! (I'll give you some notice, of course)

I am very excited to be taking part in this. While I don't post here often and I've only tried (unsuccessfully) to call in once The Best Show means so much to me and I'm thrilled to be a part of anything connected to it. Now I'm just wondering what to wear, I'm going to be coming straight from work so I'll probably be all fancy lad like, not smooth cape style like Hugman. I only wish I could look cool in a cape.

No one can carry off the cape look quite like hugman does. We bow down before his capedness.
Everyone here has their own FABULOUS style. betheboy, on Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday) we will reveal yours.
-
this is true. although, ive already got a grandiose plan for "my turn" (which actually means ive got some ideas to throw to LJP, only to be shot down by her more awesome vision).
i will wait to leave it up for discussion with the master though.

I know you are grand and the photo is supposed to be about you so if you are also grandiose, I'll happily go along with that (as long as it does not endanger anyone.)

one word: moustache
-
And on this name change subject: Look at the Grote(s). He's trying to throw us off, isn't he?
Nah, it was just a funny suggestion from Big Plastic Head (himself formerly Patrick in Oregon).
-
And just to point out how retro-hip I am; Tarkus cake.
-
I am in Toronto currently, but am moving to MTL soon! We should have a québécois photo day.
-
So, who's next!?!?!?!?
-
I just got home from meeting with Lisa and having my FOT picture taken (and Lisa J's Beach Boys Barbecue Blowout Bash Blast) and I am looking forward to seeing how they come out. Lisa is an outstanding photographer and I encourage anyone who can get in touch with her to participate in this to do so because it's the closest thing to Shangri-La on Earth.

New FOT FOTO of betheboy on lisajaneperskyphoto.com
It was great fun and as usual. I have the hardest time picking the best of three so I usually pick the one that best fits the overall project. I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed shooting betheboys mug.
Dig the suit. FANCY.
-
brilliant as usual. and quite dapper.
ive said this before (more than once, even): FOT are all attractive.
PS no self-hating replies to this thread, dfk!
-
lookin' good. i can't wait for more and more and more and more.
-
The advantage of doing the shoot immediately after work is that I still had my double fancypants on. The next time I feel like hating myself I'll simply refer to the picture that Lisa took. Thank you Lisa, the only thing cooler than being a photographed FOT is meeting you in the process. I said it already but it bears repeating: If you can take part in this, you should. You won't regret it.

You are a very sharp-looking FOT! What a great photo, Lisa!
-
These are all great photos.
-
brilliant as usual. and quite dapper.
ive said this before (more than once, even): FOT are all attractive.
PS no self-hating replies to this thread, dfk!
Am I allowed to say that Lisa Jane Persky's call was thoroughly enchanting? I mean, if I don't talk about how fat I am?

dave, im going to shake you when i get to TN.

Hi FOT'S. Thank you again for being so supportive of me and my collaborators so far.
I've barely had five seconds to rub together since I shot betheboy.
I wanted to let you know that I'm shooting John Junk next and after that, our first female (YES!) FOT. I'll let her tell you about that or I will once I've got John's pic up.
After that, I'm coming to New York and I'll have time to shoot some people. If I don't get to you this time, I will the next (possibly Oct.) What I've been asking FOT FOTO peeps to do is think about the following: Are there any particular calls I should know about? Is there a location for the shoot that relates to that call or that resonates for/says 'you' ? If you are in NY/NJ/CT area and want to be photo'd for the Official Unofficial FOT FOTO project and haven't written to me yet, now is the time. If you have, I'll be in touch.
In the meantime, I'll be reading GOOP for tips on what might enhance my otherwise clueless life.
Kind regards to all of you.
LJP

Can't wait to see JJ's photo. (I call him JJ.)

Agreed, I thought it was a good call.
-
The fact that I move on to the next FOT in no way diminishes my admiration and appreciation of FOT's that have already been photographed. I miss you guys. Let's do it again.
Okay, I'm going to get a shot at John Junk's mug on Monday. Looking forward to that.
-
after a brief self-evaluation on the FOT Fitness Challenge thread, i thankfully have a nice, patient wait ahead of me til LJP hits the bluff city; i want to be able to stand up next to the already photographed, amazing looking FOT.
i also anticipate seeing who the first female FOT will be.
-
Who is the dude in the reflection of the window in betheboy's photo? He's exactly how I'm envisioning the character of Doc Sportello in the new Pynchon book.
-
John Junk FOTo up now at www.lisajaneperskyphoto.com >Galleries>Friends of Tom
I visited the world in which he wrestles and rules and got a tour of some of the more scenic art leavings.
Thank you, John Junk, betheboy, hugman, Steve in North Hollywood for making this idea come to life.
Our project is good.
Next...!?
-
Just saw JohnJunk's photo! Very cool! I gotta get a room like that for my rage-outs.

Looks like that room in the chair throwing scene in Gummo. Nice pic.

no, steve, you go to the rage cage.
-
Love the John Junk picture, well done Lisa Jane.
Now, not to sound creepy but when can we start seeing the ladies up in here?
-
Just saw JohnJunk's photo! Very cool! I gotta get a room like that for my rage-outs.
That wasn't his apartment?
-
I wondered this myself (about the women). Where were they? In the beginning, none contacted me. Now we have quite a few in the queue, including one Susannah G. who is in L.A.! The wait to see a gal or three or maybe 6 or 8 should not be too long now.
Please show proper regard and curb the animal noises.
iAmBaronVonTito will be watching you.
-
What about a self-portrait, kiddo?
-
The wait to see a gal or three or maybe 6 or 8 should not be too long now.
If I weren't in the midst of wedding madness I would totally come and see you to spare you a trip :-\
And, I welcome animal noises, as long as they are not swine-related.
-
I am kind of effeminate.
-
Just saw JohnJunk's photo! Very cool! I gotta get a room like that for my rage-outs.
Aside from the plants and JJ, I can recognize 0% of what's in that room.

These are awesome. I can't believe it's really DIRTY DEE!
Double awesome.

HOLY SMOKE, I know there's a Gathering coming, but look: our FOTo thread has sunk to the bottom like THE POSEIDON.
I'm in NY for 8 days. I want to FOTo as many of you who have written to me to be FOTo'd as possible (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). I'd like to shoot people between 9-11 am and 3-6 pm. I might be able to make a few exceptions but my schedule is a little bit tricky. I'm shooting Jason Grote in the 3-7 slot on Sept 7, so that ones taken.
I want to shoot outdoors in an environment that you're comfortable in, that means something to you, or perhaps in some way relates to a call you made to Tom and/or has a part in your routine.
Please write to me at lisajanepersky@aol.com and let me know who you are, your name on the board, your ideal day AND your telephone (cell) no. I'll call in the next couple of days to talk to those of you I can schedule. I'll try to get as close to what you request as possible. If I don't get to you this time, I'll be back and we'll keep trying.
Looking forward to it and to seeing you.
-
LJP, if you make it to the Gathering, i hope to see some photos from you (and other FOT!)
bring your cameras.
-
If you have a chance to meet and with with LJP, do not pas it up. She is the best.
-

Seconded! She and her husband are the coolest!

thirded!
Had a blast w/LJP today!
-
My ladyfriend and I met with Lisa on Friday for a quick shoot. Lisa is hilarious and I'm pretty sure my girl is going to leave me for her.
I'm excited to see her again at the meet-up tonight.
-
Ditto! Had lotsa fun walking around midtown yesterday.
-
She rules. Period.
-
Met Lisa and her husband at the Gathering. Both top-quality human beings. I hope to be photographed by her someday.
-
Agreed, Lisa and her husband were extremely nice and I enjoyed eating pizza with them. And I'm loving the FOT pics, keep em coming!
-
My first foray amongst the tri-state FOT was truly a great experience. It was a privilege and pleasure to photograph and to meet so many FOT before and during the gathering.
I've amassed an overwhelming number of pictures over the last week and a half and now I have to go back to the bunker and do some judicious editing.
I'll try to post a new FOT portrait every week. There are MONTHS worth of FOTos now! I can hardly wait for you to see them and each other and I'm looking forward to continuing to document those who want to be included. Keep me posted and THANK YOU, EVERYONE.

Everyone asking to be FOTo'd: Read my instructions on other pages of this thread. Send me your contact info. I'm putting you on the list and will contact you when I get to your City.
First things first; I need to bring in some jack so that I can continue to afford this endeavor!
It's so much fun and I DON'T want to stop.

i just sent an email as well...i doubt you'll be in kansas city anytime soon, but i'll be visiting LA for thanksgiving! I'll be there most of the week. This project is really turning out awesome.

There should be some sort of test for this.
-
There should be some sort of test for this.
There is. You have to be able to find, read and follow all the instructions I've posted.
As you know, this proves to be too much for some. I wind up shooting the FOTerati.
What do you have in mind, buffcoat?
-
i hope that wasn't a dig at me or something.
i will pass any test, as i have been a huge best show fan for years.

Now what *I* had in mind was some sort of crazy 300-question test that you'd have to study for.
What might be, uh, reasonable would be to have it be for people who are actually fans of the show, whether new fans or old fans. But people who genuinely like the show.
Now I'm going way too far with my little, sad snippiness in the face of your wonderful project. All the pics so far are fantastic, especially the one of Steve in NoHo. And it was fantastic to meet you and Andy.
But what would a messageboard be without bitter old fanboys? Fun and enjoyable? Ha!

I think he means me...the truth is I haven't even heard a second of the show, I just like getting my picture taken. Sorry!
-
AndrewVDill, for the ladies, i think your listener status was irrelevant.
-
I don't think there are a whole lot of people who bother to register as a FOT who aren't genuine fans of the show. Unless they're like spies or something...

buffcoat, it was a pleasure knowing you. Andy and I had you pegged as a good guy. I'm going to have to re-assess your degree of FOTitude.
Look, I understand what you're getting at. I know there's a class system built into fandom, boards and friendship but I'm shooting Friends of Tom NOT classifying degrees of FOTitude.
When I meet up with people to FOTo, I generally ask a lot of Q's about their relationship to and with The Best Show. It's to help us relax. It's not a pressure cooker situation. I don't feel like we've been or are going to be defrauded by anyone here. It's a big family with all kinds of listeners bringing it all kinds of ways. I'm sure I'll FOTo a TBSOWFMU widow or two in the process.
Write that test, though. It might be fun (like the Rhino Musical Aptitude Test) but that test will deserve its own thread.
-
Don't reassess me! I was almost kidding. And I would never rank people according to FOTitude.
I started the quiz a long time ago in what I, in my humble opinion, consider the second most neglected thread/idea in FOT History (behind my list of "According to Jim" script ideas):
http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,5267.0.html (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,5267.0.html)
Someday it will be completed.

Think of the pics that bug you as baby pictures.
Like babies, you don't know what type of people they'll become.
Besides, Lisa Jane is shooting them so you don't have to.

Your photos are beautiful and I am enjoying them immensely.

There will be. I'm still going through everything. I know it seems like it's taking a long time so please forgive me but I have other work and so I'm doing this and FOT's in-between everything else. I also happen to want it all to be a certain way...MY WAY! That takes even more time.
I'll post here and on twitter as soon as anything goes up.
I reallllllyreallllly thank you for your patience.

Aren't they? They're the perfect antidote to some of the more jaded types hanging out around my webpages. I'm not saying anyone in particular. I'm just sayin'.

I LOVE it! It's perfect.

Both new photos are wonderful. They expand the idea of "FOT" tenfold.

In case you missed this, the pix of Spoony and Corrie are up on the website: http://bit.ly/Ihbb3 I <3 FOT!
Anyone in Oakland or SF want to participate in this project? Write to me on this thread or message me. Coming to the Bay Area soon.
-
Corrie's adorable. Spoony's adorable too, but I am too insecure about my sexuality to say it out loud.
-
Anytime I take a look at this portfolio, which I do anytime a new photo is added, when Hugman's photo comes up, I think for just a split second that he's got a huge swastika on his chest.
(He doesn't. It's my problem.)

Also looking for FOT in the San Diego and San Francisco/Berkeley/Oakland areas. Anyone?
All of you guys who are attending the record fair, have a blast and report back. Wish I were going to be there.

I've met you! You have the stature of an athlete with an avuncular disposition that is downright charming. Sure, you finished the baldness marathon a little ahead of the rest of us, but I'm closing in on that final mile myself. God is our barber.

2 MORE VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGES:
If anyone who wants to be FOTo'd by me is in the San Diego area or Oakland, Berkeley, SF. leave me a message.
The famous and infamous Scharpling and Wurster's photos coming later this month.
-
The quotation. The police car. Jason Grote. That photo is ALIVE.
Amazing.

Thanks so much! Probably the best picture ever taken of me.

PS I'm loving these FOTos. They can't come quick enough. Does anyone else always play "try to stop the slideshow before it glances over the first photo" whenever they go to look?

Yeah, I do. It has that weird and bothersome hiccup thing. Try to turn the slideshow off asap. You can also go direct to the thumbnails and click on the one you want to gaze upon long and lovingly. Umm, would that be yourself, perchance?
But you knew that.
-
Thanks so much! Probably the best picture ever taken of me.
I'm totally tickled that you like it. The headshot is even handsomer but it wasn't a fit with the FOT pages because it was a close-up, Norma. I'll send it along to you later.
-
What a great picture- It's so personable!

Thanks, DJ -- are John Junk pointed out on Facebook, the Frederick Douglass quote is also a Best Show reference: http://www.recidivism.org/2007/05/the_belt_brigade.html

Oh, yah! Of course, I can't decide on my SECOND favorite, because my very favorite picture is obvious.

A Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) account would be pretty easy and allow for comments as well as tagging.

Thank you all (Steve in No. Hlywd, MC Steinberg, Andrew V. Dill, betheboy, Brett Davis, hugman, John Junk, Corrie, Spoony, Caissie, Matt, Eli, Lincoln, Kittykittymeowmixhead, Kid Pain, Jon from Maplewood, Jason Grote, Susannah, Evan H. Levine) for being such a great addition to my life and to the world at large in 2009.
Having never tried to intentionally meet up with a group of near-strangers in order to photograph them for such a personal project, I didn't quite know if or how it would work or what we would be getting into. All I knew for certain was that Tom attracts a quality ilk (with a few exceptions-you-know-who-you-are).
I would never have expected it to be ALL that it's been. Meeting you has been enriching and meaningful to me beyond these words and those pictures. I wish for great things for all of you in 2010 and beyond. I thank you for coming out and meeting me, for inviting me in, for allowing me to take your picture and to share it with everyone and for being there even when I'm not able to completely bringing it myself. You inspire me and give me hope for the future.
Hey! I'm talking about you too, Tom, Jon, AP Mike, Evan, Therese, Terre, Paul F. Tompkins, John Hodgman. You brought me real joy in '09. I'm betting my lenses on you and all the people who leave their inimitable marks in the comments section to continue to bring your particular magic to the world. Thank you and Love from me, LJP

Meting LJP, Andy Zax, Tom Mike and a dozen FOT as the highlight of my year. I look forward to see all of you (and meeting more of you) in 2010.
-
So, Lisa, does this mean that the FOT project is finished? Or can we expect some more FOTos?
-
Not finished, Steve. Many more FOT to FOTo. Seattle in April. Chicago in July. Who's in? As a rule, time, expendable income and travel must come together in a magical dance.
-
LJP, if you plan to go abroad this fall, you guys should come and visit me in Capetown, S. Africa!

I'm definitely in for April.
Should I bring the 7" that's skingrafted to my forehead? Oh wait, it's always there!

Lisa,
I love getting to see the faces of the FOT, as well as seeing your craft of the portrait. Thank you for doing it.
I'm camera shy, however, I'll try to FOT-up. I'll be in DC if you are ever here for a visit. But I'll let you know if I make to LA or an overlapping trip to NYC in 2010.

Dear Past and Future FOTo subjects, victims, FRIENDS!-
Andy and I are in NYC unexpectedly due to the death of my beloved friend and mentor H.M. Koutoukas. It would be quite cheering to see any of you. We will be at STAND restaurant this Sunday March 14th to consume my much deserved favorite: The Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake. It's a casual place. Come on out. Have a handburger, roast the FOT.
S24 East 12th St. at University Place in the West Village (standburger.com) between 2-4p.m.
You can reach me via twitter. lisajanepersky
xoxo
-
First off, so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend/mentor. You are the product of his mentoring...clearly this person knew what they were doing.
As for Stand, I will try! You're right near my grad school alma mater (The New School).
Either way, welcome back to the East Coast!
-
Wish I could be there, LJP. That sounds like a delicious milkshake. And just to give you a hug during this time. xoxo
-
I'm so sorry about your friend LJ - I have to wiki/google everything, and since you put his name down in full I pulled it up...
One of the top couple of links is http://www.warholstars.org/ so of course I have to click that.
Look at this guy!
And a quote from him: "I really wanted to write about people that nobody was interested in writing about, the ones over there that were a bit crazed by life and the cosmic encounter. The mad, the people who thought differently."
He's described as a sort of surrealist jester playwright - he sounds really great.
I'll come meet you on Sun - and I just talked to Kiemzi, who will be loitering in NYC waiting for the WFMU marathon finale to start Sun evening - we'll keep you & Andy company!
-
EVERYONE TAKE CARE OF OUR LJP & ANDY.
xo!
-
Thank you for the condolences. They mean a lot to me. I never took Harry for granted and always made a point of seeing him when I was in NY. Very glad about that now. He had many opportunities to die during his life but managed to live in spite.
He said "As long as you can loathe you're still alive."
Auntie Christina, Thank you for posting that awesome photo of hiim here. I love seeing it.
The WFMU H & M Sinfonia was great medicine for grief. Meeting up with FOT is always a treat. I learn so much from each of you. I got some good pictures and I'll post them when I get back to L.A.
JonFromMaplewood You were missed. I owe you some pix, too. Slow, aren't I? Coming soon to an inbox near you (Andy got me a yousendit account).
Now on to FOTo biz;
Cotton, no restrictions. Message me privately and we'll figure out how to meet for a FOTo.
Doodle Jump, I would love to FOTo you in S. Africa. That would be the grooviest. It's not terribly likely but I never say never.
Mackro-Be seeing you soon.
Love from me,
LJP
-
Finally. It seems like for-everrrr since I last had time to have even a quick look at what's happening on the forum. I need much more time than I have to catch up. Glad to see there's a Breaking Bad thread. I'm there.
Thank you again for the birthday wishes and for the condolences in March.
Auntie Christina, I so appreciated your posting that great photo of Harry in front of United Cigars. That was our block and our lives revolved around that place. Little story about that after this:
In the meantime, Andy and I were up in Seattle and met some fine folks and FOT at the Pop Conference which is held at the Experience Music Project. Among the people I photographed is FOT Nick Minichino who was one of the youngest presenters. If you'd like to see him, he's posted today in homebrewed 3-D (so find them old glasses with the red and blue lens) at www.lisajaneperskyphoto.com (Galleries>Friends Of Tom)
Let me know how/if that works.
Little story: When I got kicked out (by my mom) at 16, I went to United Cigars, the great old guys who ran it at the time gave me a dime so I could call someone from the bank of payphones that used to be inside there. I found another place to live with that dime until I could afford to rent my own place back on Christopher St the following year. I managed to graduate on time while working full time at the then ONLY Sam Goody store. Then Harry inducted me into a life of mime...
-
Great pic, even without the 3D glasses.
I absolutely admire people who survive on their own before they turn 18. Just one more reason for me to love you!
-
Excellent new FOTo, Lisa!!! I can't wait to hear the details about the "life of mime."
-
Lisa Jane Persky-- there should be a self-portrait of you as a FOT! :-)

It was a complete honor to do this. I'm very happy with the results -- which is not surprising. I never did anything with a professional photographer before, and I had a total blast with Lisa doing this -- so triple bonus.
I highly recommend reserving time for the FOTo experience if you qualify, if Lisa will be in town, and if she wants to do it.

As for Dave/Knoxville; Elliston Place Soda Shop for some homemade banana pudding (if you like that kind of thing)?

He didn't ask so much as sorta barge in, and while his posse was swirling around I was pretty sure I knew what they were until I heard one of them call their pitbull over - "C'mere Lotus!". I got all giddy and whispered to LJP "do you know what those are?!" and of course, I knew right then which of the many pics we took that day would end up being the one she chose.
PS Who said I don't look like Shrek?!
-
yeah i hope the g. gallin picture turned out as rad as it did in my head.

Is there a "TBSOWFMU COOKBOOK"?
What? It's people?
Love you FOT fiends, (esp. the rind).

Maybe we should start a new thread describing strange things like this that have happened to us. Here's a quick one.
I read Peter Straub's Houses Without Doors at home, and was taking it to my office, so it was sitting in the passenger seat as I was driving to work. There's one short piece in there whose name I can't recall that I was really taken with. I had the radio on and some guy was talking about some political situation. Something he said reminded me of something in the book. I am not normally given to reading while driving, but I picked up the book and flipped through the pages.
Very shortly after, and all within the space of maybe half a second, my eyes fell on the word "night", the guy on the radio said "night" mid-sentence, and I drove under a bridge so that the lights in the car "went out". Night/night/"night", virtually simultaneously.
I put the book down.
-

That's some creepy shit right there. I'm hiding under the desk with the keyboard right now.
-
Lisa, is your avatar a riff on Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies"?
-
Hey, does anyone here remember "Scaredy Stories?" That was one of my favorite things ever.
-
Didn't someone save/collect those? They were amazing.
-
I think Regular Joe may have them, at least the ones he illustrated. And, credit where it's due, let us remember we have FOTchan (aka Chinatown) to thank for them.
P.S. I still don't know who wrote those.

I must confess. I stole those stories from another website. However the illustrations took them to the next level.

A lovely picture of a lovely couple.

Love the latest photo of Tom & Sara. I am very excited to be meeting them and other distinguished FOT later this week.

I hope you'll forgive my protracted absence of post. I'm working on two books now (the CBGB/Blondie one and another about growing up in Greenwich Village in the 60's-70's). It's an understatement to say they're taking up most of my time and I've lost some traction by travelling, but that's enabled me to shoot even more FOT! If you're not on my list and want to be, please get in touch.
And now, I give you the latest FOTo portrait. She's the mysterious and beautiful @btof , looking like a silent film star! http://bit.ly/cCGERe (http://bit.ly/cCGERe)

fantastic guys!
-
Great stuff, LJP!
-
Love those sunglasses!
-
I love when we get to see a new FOTo. Thanks, LJP! Sunshine in an otherwise bleak day.
(Kentucky, I am looking in your direction...)
-
That necklace @btof's got is epic. Love it. Great pics :D
BPH, I will glare at Kentucky with you.
-
FOTo subject #30 is the "famous" Stephen from Chicago. @scsowley One of the greats! http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh (http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh)
-
I got interrupted while I was posting that. I was going to say again, how much fun I've had taking the FOTo's. I'm really grateful to all of you for being so patient. There have been long times between posts. I get busy with all of the too many things (good, bad, other) in my life. Thank you for hanging in there, FOT. You are the best.
-
Whoop whoop! I lurve SiC's calls! I got to meet him for like 5 seconds at the DC Unrest show - awesome guy.
-
(Quietly Blushing)
-
Love the kitty on the back!
-
that's Pip! She's one of our studio cats. That's what she does when she isn't trying to nap on my keyboard, or knock my phone off my desk.
-
Another great photo, LJP.
A couple random thoughts on revisiting the album:
Erech's juggalo is a much better accessory than my cape.
Who else can't fit into the pants they wore in their FOT foto???
-
Just so's ya know: The bright and shining light of this holiday season is new FOTo subject... Auntie Christiiiiiinaaaaaaaaaa (in my Oprah voice)! : http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh (http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh)
-
Yay Auntie Christina! Welcome to the not-so-few and the proud.
Great photo!
-
That picture is amaaaaazing. So amazing.
-
What do I think of that photo? Radiance captured!
-
I agree with the last several posts - this is a great photo.
And, looking back through the prior photos, I realized the person whose name I drew (and didn't recognize) in the Secret Santa is in there.
-
Great picture. And you look pretty close to what I imagined. Sort of the opposite of the Spike-effect.
-
Those are some excellent tights.
-
Those are some excellent tights.
I know, right? Mama loves purple.
Thanks youse guys. Now I've come over all bashful and stuff.
-
So fantastic!
-
I'm thinking of all of you guys today and hoping you're having the Holiday of your dreams (or at least close to it). Merrrrrry Christmas!
-
Same to you, Lisa. xoxo

Did anyone notice a certain FOT newly posted to my website? That FOTo is of Michael @slapclap. He looks as great as he looks (which is great). I had not much to do with that, not nearly as much as his mother.
I never understand why the guys don't get as many comments as the gals. Check him out. He's soFINE. http://bit.ly/cCGERe (http://bit.ly/cCGERe)

Hey now!

Definitely fine! Great photo, LJP.
-
Great photo of one of my favorite callers. He has great stories to match his astonishing voice. The story about the Jet magazine still cracks me up when I think of it.
-
I knew @slapclap from Twitter, then him as Michael from his excellent piece on LeBron's defection. So meeting him after the WFMU Record Fair was definitely a treat. Very wonderful guy. Plus he knows how to plug things in:

And now, for those who did not see my twitter post, I bring you The Marvelous Mug of Mike: http://bit.ly/gKfUR6 (http://bit.ly/gKfUR6) Show him some love, will you? xoxo LJP
-
Mike's photo is wonderful!!!
-
I wish they'd bring back Steve. I liked him.
-
Oh, Mike ... those pictures are so Mike, Mike.

I'm coming to the beautiful Tri-State area today! You're within your rights to feel annoyed that I missed your harsh winter. I moved to Los Angeles to miss the East Coast summers, though. Always liked it when there was TOO much snow but you guys have had your patience tried, if not fried. I'm hoping you get the springtime of your dreams and that it lasts far into what is supposed to be summer.
Here's the first reason I'll be in Jersey tomorrow: http://bit.ly/ibvOog (http://bit.ly/ibvOog)
Please come and say hi to me (and Andy) if you're into it. I've only done one event like this before and it was for Quantum Leap and for a charity. THIS thing is a greed thing where we're obligated to charge for a photo because "everybody's doing it" and it makes other people look bad if we give anything away, but I will give you guys pics if you want for free, just for coming. Don't tell anyone other than FOT, that, though.
Andy's coming too and if you are going to come, he might be roaming the floor and able to get you in. It's a $20 ticket and I don't want you to pay, esp. if you can't afford it. I don't know what the promoters are going to allow me re:guest list . By all means, though, text or tweet at us if you're thinking of coming so that we try to get you in and definitely see you if you come.
I'll be working the table with my friend Victor, the artist who did the UNMASKED cover.
Here's what they told me when I asked what I should bring: 200 photos. T-Shirts:3 Medium 6 Large 12 X-Large 6 XXLarge DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT THAT MEANS?! I think not. I might be needing you to cheer me up. I always love seeing you. I'm bringing the cockring I wore in KMTP. No, I wore it on my jacket, you perverts. But I'm trying to get you to come. Oops.
If I don't see you there, let's try to grab a coffee, tea, drink, or my favorite: THE toasted marshmallow milkshake together in NYC sometime next week.
In other, bigger, news, The FOTo of Beautiful Therese Mahler is up on my website. We love Therese!!! http://bit.ly/cCGERe (http://bit.ly/cCGERe)
And I love youze guyz, too.
See ya when I see ya.
-
All I can say is, good luck.
-
I hope you've seen the gorgeous Maggie Serota in the FOTo pantheon. I've been so busy I forgot to post here. So, here! I give you Maggie: http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh (http://bit.ly/aRZ0Wh)
I love and miss you all.
-
I FOTo'd Steve Lambert in San Francisco in August while we both happened to be there. I had an amazing time with Steve. It was a privilege to hang with him, have a righteous glazed donut, peruse fine hand tools in a specialty hardware store and take photographs. I've had a hard time getting back to my own work this year. Part of that is because I got a "real" job that requires daily content. The FOTo project continues. I miss you all and hope I'm forgiven.
I also hope I can draw your attention back to the Friends of Tom (FOTo) Gallery to see Steve even though he's just another great looking, remarkable human and FOT. http://bit.ly/sTcM4X (http://bit.ly/sTcM4X)
Love from me,
LJP
-
LJP remains the best there is. Forever and always.
-
Fantastic. Also, what Martin said! It was great going through all of those pictures again!
-
You are forgiven, LJP.
Go in peace.
-
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! With love from me and AZ,
LJP
