Anyone catch it on Comedy Central? I loved it I thought he really hit it out of the park with this special. There was one bit about him visiting the 1990 version of him and telling himself about the future where I was on the floor (laughing).
I've always liked Patton Oswalt but started to really pay attention to more of his work after hearing him a lot on the Best Show. I think he keeps getting better and better.

I've been an XL Patton fan for ages; he's how I found this show in the first place. He name checked it in an interview, I think. He's easily one of the smartest guys doing comedy now. Very nimble.
I'm going to have to wait for this on netflix (I think it releases tomorrow-w/the awesome Jack Chick tracts on the cover) but I got the CD off the crazy itunes. I don't know how different the CD is going to be from the DVD performance - I'm guessing there might be slight differences here & there.
The '90s version of himself bit is on the CD - and then in a funny little piece of synchronicity, I was watching Falling Down (approaching 20 years old!) this weekend, and there were guys talking on those massive cell phones that are the size of a paperback book.

It was so good! Risking sounding mawkish here but I thought his thing about depression was amazing - so refreshing to hear someone speak openly about their depression and struggle with medication and such, and do it in a way that can make people laugh but at the same time reflect on a serious note. As someone who has had to deal with depression and medication withdrawal, I really appreciated his account and the ability to laugh at painful experiences. And the comparison to his dog was great. Anyway I hope he is doing well.
I also appreciated the stuff about losing weight - the treadmill thing was hilarious!

if there ones thing i believe lacks all humor is comedians that make jokes about their weight*; Patton has become the exception to this rule.
ive been a patton fan for years as well and im enjoying the attention he's getting (if only for my own personal objective, which is people will recognize who im talking about when im making a reference).
*gabriel iglesias, ralphie may, john pinette

Louis CK has done some amazing stuff about getting fatter and getting older in general.
Generally I'd agree though, it's a comedy motif that's right up there w/airplane food, etc etc. And the guys you mention tend to do jokes about it almost to the exclusion of everything else.

I definitely think Patton does it perfectly. Theres one subtle thing he did that I laughed harder than anything else at, when he first talks about going back in time, and meeting himself, he looks at his belly and goes "yea...I know". I thought that was one of the funniest things ever.

a couple weeks ago, CC aired an older special of Patton's and i hadnt noticed that he's a little chubbier; ive always thought he was brilliant and never paid attention (until that moment). it explains why i thought it was strange he was doing stand up on his weight.
all of this nonsensical talk of me defending why i love patton "just the way he is", reminds me of the dude who called in to tell PFT he looked good since his weight gain during Root of All Evil- "you look good, buddy." what a goon.
*HBO special from the late nineties- a good friend of mine and i recorded this in high school and watched it nonstop.

I watched My Weakness is Strong followed by the classic HBO special from 10 years prior, and noticed that he hasn't really aged. Maybe comic books keep you young?

Not to derail, but it sounds like you should also pick up Maria Bamford's newest album... She deals with similar subjects really hilariously.
Is that a word?

Can anybody tell me what John Hamm has to do with any of this i vaguely remember his name being mentioned in association with something Patton was doing.
-
Boy oh boy, that was funny. I'm thrilled that more and more people are becoming fans of his. I've certainly tried to do my part; the There Will Be Blood bit from his Best Show premium is the closest I've ever come to getting something to go "viral", which... I guess is a good thing?

The DVD has some short film companion pieces to the special, and Jon Hamm appears in one of them.

It appears from Amazon.com that this comes in 2 versions - a DVD/CD set and a CD/DVD set. They have different prices and cover art, so I assume they're different. Does anyone know what's different about the two? I can't find much online.

I'm not quite sure but it really just looks like one comes in a DVD case with the cd, and the other comes in a CD case with the DVD in it. Either way, 10 bucks for both? That's definitely a steal.

That is not a word.
it is a word.

"That" is a word - one of our most basic, in fact.

"That": a word so nebulous it borders on meaningless.
-
per Jason Woliner's twitter, the cd and dvd are the same exact thing in different packaging.

Thanks! I'm glad I picked up the CD-shaped version then. Strangely enough, none of the Best Buys in town are stocking this, but I was able to find it at Target. It was in the "up and coming artists" section right next to Shinedown.

It's likely exclusive to certain stores.

Just read a decent little article about John Hamm in the new Elle. Go to the drugstore and read the article, then put the magazine back. It's on page 138.

Yes, but is "dramatical" a word?

Yeah, my Best Buy apparently doesn't carry non-music albums anymore. I was going to order it online but the DVD/CD version is $3 more.

He's right; I can confirm this since it was used in a Twiztid song. (http://www.lyricstime.com/twiztid-unrational-lyrics.html)
(yeah I know that chorus was stolen from a classic Boogie Down Productions track but it's funnier this way)
-
Wow, I had no idea. I was just being a jerk.
Doesn't the word "dramatic" do the same thing as "dramatical" but in less letters?
-

Yeah, like flammable and inflammable.

Yeah, like flammable and inflammable.
See, inflammable is when you're more than flammable. It's when something is so flammable, that it's INflammable.

How about 'ironic' and 'ironical'? When I see or hear 'ironical' I want to punch something.
Now I have to punch myself.
*punch*
Ow.

That was ironical, Mr Head.

I thought it was a great set and even paused to see "Tom Scharpling" under Special Thanks.
I've seen a lot of articles on him lately (like the NY Times piece) and I guess I never knew he had such an immense knowledge of movies. Does anybody know if Patton is trying to write anything like a sitcom/movie?

He is a MASSIVE movie geek which is why I love him so. I think he's said before that he's got a bunch of scripts in various phases & has done punch up on other scripts too.

I think he said on his blog a while back he was writing a book.

i rewatched this last nite and began to remember the bits he did when he was in tempe for valentine's day, like the time machine to ten years ago.
after the show, i told that bit to everyone i saw for three days.
