Hey guys. I have a blog and (don't tell Tom) that blog has a podcast.
I don't pretend to be a DJ. In fact, there's no talking on the podcast, just 10 sequenced songs. So far, I'm only a few "episodes" deep and the playlists have been made up of local Dallas/Fort Worth bands. But I'm starting to get away from that. I want to broaden it a bit.
I've started building a regular readership (I've been told I'm a hit with the "mommyblog" crowd, not sure why) and I want to sneak attack some Best Show on my readers. I was thinking of doing this by asking each of you guys to suggest a song, then I would get the songs, mix and post as a podcast with an explanation of who these people are, what an FOT is, and how we've come together via the Best Show. So, it's like a playlist thrown together by FOT guest DJs. Maybe this has been done before.
While the intent is to help spread the word, I'm not going to call it a Best Show podcast. 'Cause it's not. It's an FOT podcast. The post that accompanies the podcast would explain what the Best Show is and link back to the WFMU site and mention when and where one can listen, but there's not going to be any Best Show stuff in the actual podcast. It might be nice to mix in bits from some of your calls (Hugman's 1,000 fights, a Spike cackle, Ben K. announcing himself, Julie being Julie, etc.), but I think we can all agree that that stuff belongs within the confines of the actual Best Show and/or officially sanctioned Best Show ...uh, stuffs.
Ok, so that's my long-winded way of asking you to suggest songs for my blog's FOT "mixtape." I only have two requirements:
* Please suggest songs I can purchase & download either directly from the artist/label's site or from iTunes or Amie Street or Bleep or some such site. It would go against the spirit of the show to get this stuff off torrents. If you want to suggest something real obscure or out-of-print, send me a message and we'll work it out.
* Please provide the name you want associated with your selection. For example: "Grippo" by Saul Williams (Trembling Eagle)
Also, when the podcasts go up they are embedded in a player and not directly available for download. However, I can upload it and make it available to us privately, either by posting in a certain General Discussion board or sending it by request. Dig?
Any questions or concerns, just let me know. Thanks!

Great song. The Reigning Sound version is also great.
No FOT mix would be complete without Ted Leo but I can't decide which song.
-
"The Court Of King Arthur" by Gruff Rhys (kittykittymeowmixhead)
Just cuz it's in my head at the moment. And it's a good song :)

a number of those are memphis garage/frat bands from the 60's-70's.
another suggestion, GeeOff is a track from one of the premiums i received, "(She Got A) Nose Job", by The Dellwoods.

I just did like masterofsparks, whose example I always follow.
-
Well, I originally didn't post to this because I don't have really interesting taste in music, but I can suggest a few songs that I can listen to over and over. If you want to mention me, Pastor Josh is fine.
Dead Against It--David Bowie
Train Wrecks--Winter Blanket
Kansas City--Okkerville River
Cuscatlan--Frente!
UB Jesus--David Byrne
Lakes of Pontchartrain--The Be-Good Tanyas
Subterraneans--David Bowie
Fight Test--The Flaming Lips
Ring the Bells--James
Ghost--Neutral Milk Hotel
Accidentl Deth--Rilo Kiley
Rainy Day Parade--Jill Sobule
O, Sweet Nothin'--The Velvet Underground
Nothing too interesting, but they're good songs. But this sounds like a great idea.
-
I second Ghost by Neutral Milk Hotel.
I also nominate:
Zumpano - Some Sun (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011V7ZBE/ref=dm_dp_trk12)
Big Star - The Ballad Of El Goodo (http://www.amazon.com/The-Ballad-Of-El-Goodo/dp/B002CAAJ8E)
Brendan Benson - I'm Blessed (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Blessed/dp/B001IDGQJC)
-
Just missed it, wwwes.
However, we should do this again. If this thread stays alive & more FOTs suggest songs (or the same FOTs suggest other songs), I'll be happy to do more. Anyway, here tis:

Thanks everybody!

Haha - brilliant that you picked the Montrose track from my list. I provided this playlist's requisite dose of Sammy Hagar. YOU'RE WELCOME.
-
What's wrong with Saureschnauze? It's a great song.

Nothing wrong at all. I had trouble tracking it down and wanted to get the thing posted today, in hopes some of my readers would check out the show tonight. If you can point me in the right direction, that would be tops, bully even. Also, the bee's knees.
I want to do more of these, if you guys are down. So I'll pencil Saureschnause for FOTcast #2, cool?
Also, feel free to post the FOTcast on your site or blog or what-have-you, if you're so inclined.
-
Next time I'll pick a shorter song, promise.

Oh, I don't care. I just think than an a capella techno song should be on every podcast.
It's on Amazon mp3 if you want to keep it legit. I'd be happy to help you "acquire" a copy.
-
Thanks for including my suggestion.
I wish I had specified the version of Enlightenment with vocals.
My fault.
The spirit is there nonetheless.
Interesting comp.
I hope this series has as many volumes as the Pebbles comps. did.

i really enjoyed listening to this today. i cant wait for the next installment.
