Title: a question for TL
Post by: gedgengras on September 09, 2009, 08:56:57 PM
hi ted (and everyone else reading this),
the first small (and free!!!) 'punk' show i ever went to was at the university of hartford in CT somewhere around 1998-2000, and the headlining act (whom i had never heard of at the time) was one mr. ted leo, solo style.  i think the show was with lustre kings and v for vendetta.  i used to have a tape of yr set that i made with a handheld tape recorder and i listened to it over and over again for two or three years, until someone broke into my car and took everything that wasn't nailed to the dash.  i remember you doing some old chisel songs ('it's alright, you're ok' and 'river high', maybe more?) , a bunch of stuff from the tej leo/RX album, and some awesome covers, but for the life of me i can't remember what any of the covers were, except for 'it could all be so simple' by lauryn hill.  there was one song in particular that i loved, but my tape was too lo-fi to make out the name of the band, i've forgotten the name of the song, and at this point, really how it went at all.  i just remembered that i LOVED it.  i DO remember you referring to the band that did it originally as one of the great 'hawk bands.  i also remember you almost falling into the hole on the stage several time.
any idea what song i'm talking about??? also, thanks for that show, it changed my life in then-imperceptible ways, but here i am now, a to-the-bone musician playing in more bands then i can count on both hands, and i know that seeing that show is a big part of why that happened.
thanks!!!
-ged-
p.s. saw you the next time you rolled through UHA with the holy childhood and you playing along with that wobbly reel-to-reel and THAT was one of the best nights of music in history.  too bad there were only 20 people there.

p.p.s. citizens arrest. \m/

I can't answer your question, but I have to cosign the Citizen's Arrest love.  They're the greatest.

I first heard of/saw Mr. Ted Leo at a TINY little place in Portland, ME called Space (right on Congress St.) and I was instantly amazed. I was a Junior in High School so this was around 2002/2003 and I keep wishing and hoping he will return to Portland sometime soon since NOBODY comes there...

Ted,

Okay, um, when you were gonna beam down to the planet, okay, for the last time in Episode 25? That's where you and the crew of the Enterprise get attacked by these spores? And started acting real weird, like hippies and stuff?

Well um, I was wondering if you could settle a bet for me and my friends, okay? Um, like, when you... um, left your quarters for the last time? And you opened up your safe? Um... what was the combination?

My wife was the merch girl for V for Vendetta, quite possible during those years, for a little while.

I'm probably going, but I'm an RI FoT. Like Roger Williams said, "Eff Massachusetts."

Uh, yes but seriously, anybody want to plan a mini gathering of FOTs before the show? If you're interested send me a message. I know it's over 2 months away but it'd be fun to plan ahead!

Condensing that into 140 characters would be hard.

@tedleo what was that song you played that one time?

Well, I am not able to make it to this show as times are TOUGH (with a capital T-O-U-G-H) for me right now and I'm scheduled to work that night. I hope you all have fun and while I feel lame for trying to gather some FOTs preshow and having to bail, I hope you all have fun, and understand my situation! Post here after the show to let us know how it is!

I'll be there as an employee, and then later as an audience member. At least two other FOT co-workers will be there as well. I don't have a Scar-Face shirt, but I will keep my eyes peeled for yiz.

I've never been to something at the Middle East that was sold out or even moderately crowded- not to sound like a crazed fan, but about what time should we get there to be more or less in the front? I don't need to be first in line or anything ridiculous, but it helps to be up close when you're short. And I admittedly also just want to be in front.

I have this same question.

I seem to remember a sold-out show at the Paradise club having a large crowd presence around the stage before the first of three acts started playing. Since I am also short, I usually go up to the balcony section, but that's really more for gawking than rocking. I haven't been to the Middle East, though, so I don't know what their layout is.

I'll be there tomorrow night with my WFMU shirt on.

If you want to be up front I'd definitely get there well before the first band plays.  It is a much smaller club than the Paradise and there are not as many up-front spots.  I try to go up the left raised-up side of the club.  You can go there well into the first or second band and still find a spot where you can see TL.  I'll try to wear the Scar-Face Shirt as well.

This might be a good time to start thinking about organizing a Boston Best Show listening party again (I've pushed it a couple times before to no avail).

See ya then,
Ted

Hell yeah.  We nerded out, talked to Tom and posed for pictures taken by Terre T.  I saw at least three other Scar-Face shirts besides my own (and a Newbridge is for lovers shirt).  I swear one of these days I won't turn into an awkward teenager when meeting the likes of Tom, Ted, and Terre T (and Jodi VB I think).   Oh maturity...

It was nice meeting all the New England FOT.  See ya at the next TL show.

BTW.  TL owned but I think we already knew that.  I've seen him 11-12 times and tonight was right up there with the best.

Ha, I was the same way. In fact, I realized I sort of left in a rush before I made too much of a gape-mouthed fool of myself.

But yes, it was quite a face-melting evening of awesomeness. Thanks Ted, Tom and Terre T.

Yes! Ted Leo was amazing! The new songs sound awesome- I'm so excited for the album. He also managed to go through... I think four guitars over the course of the show, which didn't impact the quality but I mention because that's kind of impressive.

I was the one wearing the Newbridge shirt, standing with the group of FOT right at the front and sort of to the right- so, besides Eric/emdasher, who was I talking to? Everyone was awesome! We were kind of playing "spot the FOT" the whole time. It was really cool to actually meet Tom- I continue to be awkward/nervous when meeting people (Tom/Terre and Wurster last week) too.

Last night was AWESOME, despite the hour drive to and from Boston in the snow! Meeting Tom and Terre T and the rest of you folks was AWESOME as well!
$3.75 for a Narragansett tallboy was an affront to my Rhode Island-ness, however. I get 6-packs for $5.99, cases for $17.99 at my liquor store and $2.00 a can at most bars. For shame Boston. Now I know why Roger Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Williams_%28theologian%29/) left - the beer was too expensive.
I was the other guy in the Scar-Face shirt, by the way. The one with red hair. I loved Terre T's reaction to the lot of us.
Oh, and the cover of Samhain's "Archangel" during the encore was insane (Samhain = Glenn Danzig's band after the Misfits but before Danzig, for you Danzigdummies who don't know).

I was at this show too, but I didn't spot Tom until just before Ted Leo got on, and I didn't want to fight my way through the mob and ruin people's fun. The concert was a blast!

I called in to The Best Show last winter and told Tom that his show got me into Ted Leo, and that I hoped Ted would come to Boston soon.  Tom then told me that Ted Leo had publicly announced (via Brooklyn Vegan) that he would never play there again.  All in good fun, of course (and I know Ted is a FOBoston, as we all saw last night).  Anyways, thanks to Ted and all the other bands for bringing the noise AND the funk!  Pumped for The Brutalist Bricks in March too!

I'm glad that Boston and the surrounding area is littered with FOTs! I'm an NYC transplant: I was born and raised in Brooklyn, but I've been living in Boston for the past seven years.  I'd be up for listening parties / mini-FOT get-togethers / all that jazz fart.

Fighting my way to the front to see a band = good.

Fighting my way to the front to stand next to Tom and bug him while he's seeing the band he fought his way to the front to see = not so good.

Make sense now?

Also, I reviewed the show for a Boston blog:

Why didn't you talk to him after the show? I ran into Jodi VB towards the end of Titus Andronicus's set and she said she'd introduce me to Tom after the show. I actually ran into him on my way to find Jodi after the show (we kinda caught each other's eye, and shook hands, and left it at that for the moment, as he was on his way to "the little boys' room" - the same thing happened with me and Ian Svenonious, except Ian wasn't making his way to the bathroom) and he was hanging around for a little awhile, so I talked to him for about a minute after Jodi introduce us to each other.

I have to publicly thank Tim K from Somerville- I wasn't thinking and brought my water bottle to the show like I usually do when going anywhere, and after it was taken away it was misplaced at some point. Tim got it back for me even though I'm sure he had more important things to be doing- thank you again!

This show was amazing. Got up front and met some fellow FOTs. Wallcreeper started it off well, Titus Andronicus had an awesome set, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists killed it (the new songs sounded great). Talked briefly to Tom, Terre T, and Ted and probably made a fool out of myself! All in all, a great night! Thanks to everyone that came out!
