Pop Montreal is a big 4-day musical festival here, a little bit like the Montreal version of NXNE. I've got a volunteer pass so now it's just a matter of narrowing down the bands I should go see. The schedule's kind of overwhelming, though, and I don't want to spend a night at something lame when I could be at something awesome. Help me choose!
schedule is here:

I'm considering Jay Reatard and Yo La Tengo. I've seen YLT a couple of times, but I've never seen J. Os Mutantes is kind of an intriguing concept, but does anyone know if I could expect a decent performance outta them in this day and age?
I don't know who else I'll see, and I would also welcome recommendations. Demon's Claws? The Black Hollies? Faust?

On the first night, it looks like you should just go to Sala Rossa and stay. Nobunny is great live. Hunx & His Punx are fun, but Hunx loves getting naked, so, yeah, be prepared for that probably happening. Box Elders are also great. And Jay Reatard is also playing that night. Oh, and you might want to catch the Phenomenal Handclap Band early in the night if you want to dance.
The next night, the only can't-miss act there is Joel Plaskett & the Emergency. I think Joel is a really gifted and underrated songwriter. You might also want to check out the Butthole Surfers, if only because there's always a potential for a trainwreck. Maserati is also pretty good, but you wouldn't make it over to see Joel Plaskett in time. Mono's a pretty great Japanese band, but I would still see Joel Plaskett over Mono.
October 2nd: Yo La Tengo. Obviously. Maybe Soupjam, but you'd have to run from venue to venue to catch it. The Silent League has at least one member from Mercury Rev, and I like them a lot. And then you have to decide between Chain & the Gang and the Black Hollies.
Last day: Faust if you like Kraut rock, Os Mutantes if you like tropicalia, and the Fresh & Onlys if you like music.

I've heard that Os Mutantes is still a great live band. Also, Faust is probably still worth seeing.

I wouldn't miss Os Mutantes or Buffy Sainte Marie, and I'd personally also go see Sufjan Stevens, Jay Reatard and Yo La Tengo.

I saw Os Mutantes at Pitchfork Fest a few years ago and they were very enjoyable.
I second YLT, Jay Reatard, and The Black Hollies.
Bands that haven't been mentioned that I really like: Shapes & Sizes, Cryptacize, Destroyer, Nobunny, Thee Oh Sees, and DJ /rupture.
Shapes & Sizes are really awesome.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys! You're the best.

Bryan is correct. Planning out my schedule as we speak!

Be sure to include Joel Plaskett.
I cannot stress this enough!

Allan Holdsworth Trio and The Incredible Handclap Band (they are playing at the same time the first night, but Holdsworth plays again later.)

My wife's band, Chang-A-Lang , is playing 3 Oct 2009 at a party above Casa del Popolo. If you want to hang with some Toronto FOTs, they're a fine option (if you cotton to Weezer-y 'alternarock') ... BUT you need a writstband (invite only), so let me know if you're at all interested.
