You might remember me as the dude who jumped in a frozen lake to raise money for Very Special Arts in Wisconsin back in January (Polar Plunge). (In case you didn't know, here's a short doc I made about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwa6VaPKdVU&feature=player_profilepage)
Well, I'm back to ask for your help again.
Dear Friend,
Asking for money from people I don't know really well is intimidating.
To be honest, I'm pretty nervous about it.
But, I believe so strongly in what I'm going to do, that I need to ask
for your help.
In January I will be going to Haiti for 10 days with a group of people
to work with Faith Orphanage. In partnership with Faith Orphanage, my
friend Mandy started Beautiful Child, a sponsorship program that has
provided the children there with food, clothes, shelter and education
since 2006. (http://beautifulchild.bravehost.com) This will be my
first time seeing it with my own eyes. One of our main projects will
be building a safety wall around the orphanage. This will ensure that
unwelcome animals and other intruders stay outside, where they belong.
It will help keep the orphanage clean as well. We will also be
spending time with the orphans, teaching them basic skills and
building relationships with them. We plan to run a week-long camp,
too, where we hope to bring smiles and laughter to the kids there!
Personally, I hope to have my eyes opened to the needs of those less
fortunate and to put my faith into action by helping them however I am
able.
For this all to happen, though, I need your help.
This experience is going to cost about $2000 and I'm asking for your
support. Every little bit makes a difference. I understand the
constraints on everyone right now, so believe me when I tell you that
I'm grateful for every cent you donate.
So, how can you give?
The preferred method would be to write a check out to The Journey (my
church) and write “Haiti” in the memo area and mail it to me. If you're interested, please respond to this message and I can get you my address.
If you write a check your donation will be tax deductible and you will
receive a receipt at the end of the year for tax purposes. You can
also give online through PayPal (link below).
My application and deposit are due October 20th and we will be buying our plane tickets in November, so I'd really appreciate your donations before then. If you're unable to give by then, but would still like to, I can take them until we leave (Jan 2nd).
Please, if you have more questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
I will also be keeping an online diary of my experience at
haackgoestohaiti.blogspot.com so you will be able to see (both in
pictures and words) how your donation has changed my life and the life
of the orphans I'll be with.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for thinking
about helping.
And thank you to those of you who do choose to help.
Sincerely,
Ryan Haack

The PayPal link isn't working. But I'd be happy to donate some money.

Hey, guys!
I wanted to let you know I'm ok. We left on Monday evening, less than 24 hours before the quake it. This week has been extremely emotional and surreal. Thank you for your thoughts!
I'm documenting my experience at haackgoestohaiti.blogspot.com
If you're so inclined, you can donate at thejourneycommunity.com. All proceeds will go directly to rebuilding the orphanage we work with. It collapsed in the quake, but miraculously, all 32 kids survived without injury.
Thanks for your thoughts and let me know if you have any questions!
Ryan
