Has anyone seen these Jeff Dunham commercials with the "pimp character?" I don't know if I'm more offended as a comedian or as a human.
-
I really should have dialed down the subject header though. I meant to say, horribly offensive and unfunny.

Not to come to the defense of Jeff Dunham or anything, but can anybody think of a character that ANY ventriloquist has created that is nuanced & 3 dimensional, or that doesn't rely on tiresome racist jokes or dull-witted cultural stereotypes?
-
auntie christina is right, jeff dunham is hilarious and you should be ashamed of yourself.
-
Sometimes I have a puppet show in my mind that has those elements.

Madame was pretty fleshed out, right?

Yeah! I can't believe I forgot one of my childhood icons. Direct line from her right to Bea Arthur.
I also thought of Charlie McCarthy.
-
If only they were all like Charlie McCarthy and Bill Murray in Cradle Will Rock.

How 'bout a certain protege of Mr. Scharpling?

Do the Muppets count? Not really ventriloquism, but the same ballpark

And I was so surprised that no one had mentioned Wackiman. Turns out I'm just not very clever.

He's a puppet, not a ventriloquist dummy. just to split hairs.

Yeah, what're ya, some kinda dummydummy?

Dunham isn't even in the same league as The Muppets. Not even in the same galaxy.
-
Let's not forget Willy Tyler and Lester.
Lester is like a 'Wee Pals' character come halfway to life.
-
Let's not forget Willy Tyler and Lester.
Early Willy Tyler and Lester routines were notorious for Lester's detailed rants about his hatred of the Irish.

I'll have to take a look at the Wee Pals archives and get back to you.

We were talking about Willy Tyler and Lester at lunch.

I feel like we're losing sight of the main thrust of this thread here, which is that Jeff Dunham is The Worst. Something we can all agree on.
-
That Dunham "cat" sure does talk some "jive."

I accidentally caught a couple minutes of his act on the teevee and I wholeheartedly agree. And I am NOT anti-puppet.

Yes, thank you for bringing focus back to this discussion.
edit: I couldn't remember the super-filthy ventriloquist who does Opie & Anthony all the time ... Otto & George. I love when these guys pretend their dummy is out of control, and they shouldn't be held responsible for anything that comes out of the dummy's mouth. Hilarious!

Oh, America, please start falling for the Second Least Common Denominator. Please.

Jeff Dunham is coming to my town in January. Ads have already started running. He is also playing a Major Sports Arena in my town - the largest venue for 50 miles. Not one of the large theatres, not one of the large auditoriums at a local college or something. He's playing the fucking HOCKEY ARENA.
How does that work? He couldn't possibly be that popular, could he? I haven't ever heard anyone talk about Jeff Dunham in real life, ever. Granted I don't travel in the same circles with those who I'd imagine to be Jeff Dunham fans. But: really?
-

Also, I have no quibble with that subject header.
-
The other funny thing is that these puppets are two feet tall. Why pay show prices to watch something on a blurry giant TV screen?
-
Isn't this the unfunny douchebag who had a suicide bomber dummy?
-

The only time he has ever come up in conversation with me and my friends is when we were debating whether or not he made his dummies and my friend said "Him making his dummies is the equivalent to Gallagher growing his own watermelons."
But yes, he makes them all himself. Such is the trade.
-

Yep.
-
The thing with Dunham is because he is using classic joke structure and mechanics, they'd work the same if he talked about pies and kitties.
-
The worst part about him is that he can have the puppets say the dumb, unfunny, racist material and brush it off like, "HEY! IT WAS THE PUPPET! I DIDN'T SAY IT!"
I wonder if Jeff Dunham treats his kids like Edgar Bergen did, where the puppets had bigger bedrooms and he openly liked them more than his children.
