Title: Charlie Brooker and Screenwipe
Post by: wood and iron on October 13, 2009, 12:25:18 AM
Over the past week I've been devouring all of Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe. He's pretty hilarious and I find the show to be quite great. I'm also extremely interested in British TV so it's a cool glimpse into all the stuff that doesn't make it this side of the pond (UK Uncovered? It's like Girls Gone Wild on TV! With ugly people!).

My only complaint is I don't really like the animated segments that seem pretty unrelated to everything else around them.

Anybody else watch this? The segments where he is critiquing TV in a living room, is that really his flat (see, I can speak Anglophone) or just a set? Anything else I should check out?

You can find the entire series on Youtube quite easily but I torrented it for ease of viewing.

Dorvid and I discussed this on here a while back - I think there are clips in the massive Youtube thread.

Following Screenwipe, he did Newswipe - a series about the news that is also great - and Gameswipe, a one-off a couple of weeks ago, which didn't do much for me, but I'm not a gamer at all.

Also, he hosted a series called 'You Have Been Watching' - which wasn't that great. He's not a good fit for the celeb-quiz format.

His two books are pretty cheap in the UK, maybe worth an export from amazon.co.uk or HMV.co.uk. I've enjoyed them both a TON.

THAT IS ALL.

I got nothing to add except that Samir is right and Charlie Brooker is brilliant.

Oh, and this:

Thirded (is that even a word?)

Did anyone else see Dead Set? I thought it was pretty great.

He also co-wrote Nathan Barley, which is amazing.

You Have Been Watching obviously wasn't as good as any of the screenwipe type shows, but it seemed to pick up some steam in the last few "theme" episodes especially the whole 90s one. If you can find it, check it out.

Screenwipe?  Sounds like when AP Mike doesn't let you get on the air.

A new piece of Charlie's is on the Guardian site, read by the man himself. It's about atheism.

I have to say, I absolutely detest almost everything Charlie Brooker has ever done. Yet Newswipe was some of the greatest television I have ever seen.
