Hi. After a lifetime of owning just two records (the Amadeus soundtrack and Paul Simon's Graceland), my 70 y.o. father has expressed interest recently in stuff like AC/DC, the Stones & Ted Nugent. He wants me to make him a cd with "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" & "Stranglehold" on it, and I want to fill the rest with some other similar music.
Any ideas on what tracks to include? I was thinking maybe some early Aerosmith & ZZ Top.
thanks!

Santana, Rick Derringer, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallager, Tommy Bolin, Free, Faces, Steppenwolf, Bachman Turner Overdrive...

T. Rex: Mambo Sun or 20th Century Boy
-
Cheap Trick: California Man or On Top of the World
-
ZZ Top - Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings or Just Got Paid
BTO - Not Fragile
Aerosmith - Sick as a Dog
Blue Oyster Cult - Hot Rails to Hell
-
James Gang - Funk 49
-
James Gang - Funk 49
Yep. Funk 48 is also good. Or, if you want to stick with the Rides Again LP, Woman and The Bomber are also good ones.
-
"Jailbreak" - Thin Lizzy
"Problem Child" - AC/DC
"No More Mr. Nice Guy" - Alice Cooper
"Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey" - Beatles
"Barracuda" - Heart
"Suffragette City" - David Bowie
"Two Tub Man" - The Dictators (a bonus if your dad's an old-school wrestling fan)

I think I might be confusing hard rock with classic rock but I was thinking he would like a bunch of Who and Rolling Stones. If he likes the Amadeus soundtrack he would probably enjoy Queen and Yes. I'll bet if you went to Pandora, their program would tell you what he might enjoy. You are sweet to make your dad a music complilation.

"That's All You Need"-Faces
"Down on the Street"-The Stooges
"Hello Hooray"-Alice Cooper
"Red"-King Crimson (actually anything from "Red" would be a good choice)

Thanks for all the great suggestions! This might just have to be a multi-volume set. Who knows, the old man has fickle tastes. Like, there was one time during the 90's when he somehow got hold of a Dead Can Dance tape and was listening to that during his daily commute. Never got to the bottom of that one.
The final disc:

6 - Rod Stewart & The Faces - Stay With Me
7 - The Who - The Seeker
8 - Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks
9 - Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (slight return)
10 - Free - All Right Now

I vaguely recall hearing a Dead Can Dance song in an AARP commercial from several years back.

Nah, that was a health care ad.
Or a zombie movie.

If you do a second volume, I'd say either Hair of the Dog or Miss Misery by Nazareth should be considered.
-
for subsequent volumes:
"Every Picture Tells a Story", "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" - Rod Stewart
"Citadel", "Street Fighting Man" - The Stones
"Closer To The Heart" - RUSH
"My Town", "Do We Still Do It", "Good Time Gals", "The Bangin' Man", "Them Kinda Monkeys Can't Swing", "O.K. Yesterday Was Yesterday", "Lay It Down", "How D'you Ride", "Gudbuy T'Jane", "Mamma Weer All Crazee Now" - Slade (I love this band - hard rocking, yet fun)
"No Fun" - The Stooges
"Laser Love", "Rapids", "The Groover" , "Rock On", "Sunken Rags" - T. Rex
"Head Held High" - VU
-
Geez, I think this thread may be dude-ier than the KISS thread.
-
I'd say Hairy Chapter possibly the second album - can't remember which is better, the first or second, and Lord Baltimore. Both really good hard rock.

No Cheap Trick, huh? Bless your dad's heart. You think an old man doesn't know what your old man would like?

Maybe for the next volume. I tried for awhile to find both of those tunes floating around, but came up empty-handed.
I think Vince might has a beef with Cheap Trick, though. One time we were staying at a motel when Cheap Trick was playing Great Adventure (circa '87). Robin Zander came outside to have a smoke, but his little boy was following him out the door. Zander was unaware of the child's presence, and let a glass door close right on the kid behind him, smacking him hard. We were all like "what a jerk!".
The guitar guy was cool, though. took a photo with my brother and signed an autograph.

I love this thread. I want The Vince Mix Volume One on 180 gram collector's vinyl with all of KTB's posts as the liner notes.

this cover is great, as is the mix KtB ... love it

Most definitely Hair of the Dog. Don't mess w/ a son of a bitch is something that crosses age and cultural boundaries.
-
Head East - "Never Been Any Reason"
if you're considering Slade you gotta consider Sweet, "Ballroom Blitz" being the obvious one
-
You definitely need something by Black Sabbath - my suggestions would be either Hole in the Sky or Supernaut.

Or "Paranoid" which is my theme song, and which I have stipulated must be played at my funeral.
-
HEART - MAGIC MAN
-
Queen - Stone Cold Crazy
-
"Ace Of Spades" - Motörhead
-
Toys in the Attic - Aerocherone

Toys in the Attic - Aerocherone
If pressed to pick an Aerocherone song, I would probably go with "Train Kept A-Rollin" from Get Your Wings.

My favorite songs of their is Seasons of Wither, which I think is genuinely creepy and beautiful, i.e. not at all appropriate for this mix. Dave's pick is good, but I think Draw the Line is also a great pick. Nobody's Fault and Adam's Apple are also solid rockers.
