Hey everybody -
If you didn't know about it already, WFMU is doing a 24 hour mini-marathon this week, from Tuesday November 17th to Wednesday November 18th. We're doing it because the station fell short of its overall goal back in March and this coupled with the recession has left WFMU with no other alternative than to go back to the listeners and ask for some emergency help.
I will be doing my show Tuesday November 17th from 8-11 PM EST. We will be pitching for your pledges once again. Now I know you've come through in the past for me - everybody stepped up like true champs back in March - but we're going back again this week because WE HAVE TO.
The station needs to get enough money to make it through to the spring.
I am not taking this lightly. You have all been great, and I am trying to give back and make it worth your while. I will have a special new Fun Pack that is ONLY available by pledging DURING MY SHOW this Tuesday. It is called The Best Show HEROES DO WHAT HEROES DO FUN PACK, and it is pretty awesome.
It consists of a Best Show t-shirt designed by the one and only Michael Kupperman. I just saw the design and it is AWESOME! Kupperman is the hilarious genius behind SNAKE N BACON and TALES DESIGNED TO THRIZZLE, and he was kind enough to design this shirt for me! Take a look at it!
The next item is a CD filled with a ton of rare and unheard Best Show stuff. Some of the items included willl be:
- The Best Shows that were removed from the archives over the years.
- The first Best Show On WFMU, which has never been archived!
- The special Tom Scharpling One Man Performance of the movie MR BROOKS!
- Tom reading Best Show Fan Fiction!
and more awesome surprises! Trust me - it's gonna be AWESOME!
If that wasn't enough, my co-host will be the one and only TERRE T from WFMU's amazing CHERRY BLOSSOM CLINIC, heard every Saturday.
She is bringing along HER OWN PREMIUM CD called IDIOT BOX, another one of her fantastic comps of mega-rare punk and rock greatness! Her past CDs are pretty legendary - she gets requests all the time for them - and this one will be no different.
And all of this stuff is going to be available ONLY during The Best Show On WFMU this Tuesday November 17th from 8-11 PM EST!
You can call and pledge at 800-989-9368 or online at www.wfmu.org, but you need to do it DURING MY SHOW if you want my premium!
If you can't pledge during the show but want to, just drop me a line at toms@wfmu.org and I will take your pledge myself!
This is serious stuff, people. But I know we can do it.
AND SPREAD THE WORD ON THE MARATHON AND MY FUN PACK! Tell every Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and message board about it!
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 17th. 8-11 PM EST. 800-989-9368. www.wfmu.org.
Thanks in advance for your support!
Tom.

- The first Best Show On WFMU, which has never been archived!
Pardon the "Mike and His Ilk" parlance, but HOLY CRAP.
-
You will get my money.
-
Does WFMU have a target amount for this mini-marathon?
-
The Fun Pack is an offer one can't refuse!
-
Does WFMU have a target amount for this mini-marathon?
On last week's SSD they said $200,000.
-
Does WFMU have a target amount for this mini-marathon?

What one man can do, another can do.
-
The usual $75 to get the premium?
-
I believe they're $100,000 short, not $200,000. But I'm sure $200,000 will do too!
Here's the pledge breakdown:
https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php
WFMU will get all the money I didn't spend on vinyl this weekend.
-
Is Terre T's surely amazing comp included in the Best Show Pack? Just wondering!
And I can't wait to pledge. Well, obviously, I can wait, because I didn't turn in the pledge form when I first got it and decided to wait until the Marathon rolled around.
-
As good as done.
Honestly cannot imagine a more bitchin' premium than the one Tom's proposed. It blows my mind.
I felt really great and oddly empowered by my pledge last time. Preaching to the choir here, but there is LITERALLY nothing that gives me more joy than the Best Show, and to be able to put some sort of a price (even an arbitrary one) on that is actually helpful. Curbs my Midwestern guilt.
THANK YOU, TOM.
Ike

According to the pledge page (https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php), it is. Which is awesome, because (a) Terre T's comps are always kickass, and (b) I can probably only swing a 1-DJ premium pledge this time round. No matter. Everyone's getting homemade gifts this year, for I must have this Fun Pack!
-
Yes, finally that first Todd Billups call. I knew you had a plan.
-
Sorry to be potentially annoying, but is there any chance of the shirt being available in any lady or even youth sizes? Obviously I always donate with the motivation of supporting the station, but it would be nice to be able to represent the Best Show in my wardrobe (beyond my Newbridge shirt... and my WFMU shirts from past marathons...) instead of shoving the shirt in a drawer somewhere.
-
I'm giving up my weekend to work some extra hours to spend on WFMU (ahem*TOM*ahem). We're gonna do this, damnit.
-
Allison -
I'm not sure what sizes will be available. I'll find out tomorrow.
And YES, we are going to do this.
WE ARE GOING TO DO THIS!
I do need each and every person on this board to go out and pound the internets tomorrow. The Facebooks, Twitters, message boards - everything! Please just let everybody know this is going on, and let them know about the premium! If they are comic book fans, let them know about the Kupperman shirt! If they are rock maniacs, let them know about Terre T's awesome CD! But please - LET THEM KNOW!
It's gonna be a tough one, but I feel like we are gonna make something special happen tomorrow night.
Tom.
-
Looks like a chunk of the money I made at my art show last night is going bye-bye ...
Don't suppose they can just add it to my already-existing Mouse of Today pledge?
Naw ... I can do this ...... I needs my radio .....
-
If I could pledge during the best show, I certainly would, however, I find myself in Berlin Germany at the moment. The Best Show will be playing around 2-4am my time. Tom, you said to email you if one could not pledge during your show. What info do I need to send you?
-
I'm definitely doing this. Tom's the best.
-
MNordine -
Just send me your name, address, email and the pledge amount. I'll write it up and put it in as if you called in.
Thanks!
Tom.
-
Unless someone points out that I am wrong, you should be able to make an online pledge anytime during the marathon by going here:
https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php
You won't get your name announced on the air or be in the running for special prizes, but you still make a pledge towards the show and the station and get your premiums. That's how I've always pledged.
-
I've always donated online and have never not had my name called. The trick might be to pledge as early as possible into the 8 o'clock hour. Can't wait for the show tonight and a chance to do my part!
-
You are wrong ;D
I've always pledged online during the show (with an option to leave a note which is usually read on air) and your name etc are read by the co-host and considered part of the show total.
EDIT - Yeah, I'm sure timeliness is part of that too, too many pledges to thank by the end, especially the last 2 years.
-
Tom likes it best if we pledge during the show. Consider this:
No offense, Sarah, but pledging early is not the way to go if you're a FOT!
You need to show support for the show by pledging DURING THE BEST SHOW!
It's the ONLY WAY to let the Powers That Be know how strong and dedicated the listenership is!
And you get the exclusive GOOD GUYS WIN AND BAD GUYS DIE IN 2006 FUN KIT by pledging during my show! Wheee!
Let's make it happen, yo!
We'll talk more about this in the weeks to come.
Tom!
-
I am going to pledge like a mofo. I just started a new job, so I don't have to pay right away, right? In the past I always just did the credit card thing.
I'm thinking of paying in the next couple months and pledging tonight.
Moonshake, pledging during the show helps out Tom, but you can get your premium either way and I think if that's the only way you can pledge then you shouldn't freak out.
-

I was thinking that since this is a special case so they're going to ask for the pledges to get turned around very quickly - I know it's not something as simple as "oh jeez, our bank balance is really low" but I have no idea. This is why I don't run anything.
-
I meant to say that you can pledge online and it doesn't necessarily have to be during the show to make your contribution. In fact, last year I pledged several weeks after the marathon was over and still got my premiums. So you shouldn't be worried about not being able to pledge during the show.
Obviously, those aren't the preferred ways to do it. If you can, you should call in and do it during the show. It's more fun that way and that's what I shall do tonight!!!
-
I love WFMU and a lot of other shows on it but how long do you think it took Ken to decide to have the mini-marathon on Tuesday night? 5 seconds?
Go get em Kid Jersey! Can't wait to get that premium.
-
Sick in bed with the flu, but I'm going to try and fight the good fight and pledge during the show.
-
I love WFMU and a lot of other shows on it but how long do you think it took Ken to decide to have the mini-marathon on Tuesday night? 5 seconds?
A no-brainer if there ever was one.
-
I just pledged for the first time online, and I feel pretty great. No more guilty conscience for me!
-

A no-brainer if there ever was one.
Also notice, they are ending it at the instant Narduawar starts. I bet he would have an interesting fun pack though.
-
I got confused/trigger-happy and pledged online last week...The perils of not listening live. Had to bit my lip and forgo the premium this time around, but EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS.
-
Just pledged and paid. I won't be able to listen live. Time difference.
-
When has time difference ever stopped anyone from listening?
(Nice going with the pledge.)
EDIT: I'm joking, of course. The Best Show is on at 2-5 am over here.
-
I just issued this challenge on twitter:
I'm ready to issue a WFMU pledge challenge... If you follow me here and have never before pledged money to WFMU, pay attention: If you pledge at least $10 tonight, I will pledge an additional $5 to my already big pledge. Reply to me! And be honest! This challenge is only available for pledge newbies who follow me on twitter. But I encourage others to issue the same challenge!
Now, these might well be famous last words. I'm no DfK when it comes to math, so maybe I'm setting myself up for a disaster. But I'm willing to go for it. I'm guessing a third of my 250 followers are FOT, a third are spambots, and a third are real people, so I think I'm OK. But I wanted to come on here and tell people about this - maybe someone gets inspired to do something similar.
GOOD GUYS WIN!
-
I've never been so excited to give up some dough.
-
I'm guessing a third of my 250 followers are FOT, a third are spambots, and a third are real people
From this information I deduce FOT are not real people.
-
You catch on fast!
-
I feel real.
-
DID IT! Feels good, everyone.
-
Pledged. Got a shoutout. I feel like a real FOT, now I just need my card.
-
I pledged right at 8:00 and my name wasn't read until almost 10:00. I take this as a good sign.

Yeah, the printer couldn’t keep up with the web pledges & at one point was a ½ hour behind … and that’s before they tallied & sorted, and then made piles for Terre T to read over the air. I had big fun talking to youse guys – talked to Scratchbomb early on and scribbled Kristina’s name so badly that Terre added an extra syllable when she read it – My fault Kristina! My handwriting just blows now that we have the computers and live in the future.
Also talked to JustNicole and Big Plastic Head, and sat next to a bunch of awesome WFMU dudes as they took pledges from a lot of you – I recognized a bunch of your names! Kiemzi scored big time when she bagged I think 3 celeb calls – Patton, PFT, and Tim Heidecker! Right at the end, I also heard from Lisa Jane Persky! I was such a jibbering idiot at that point I thought she was a previous pledger calling back – the woman had a similar name.
Let me share a proud moment … so Tom is up and moving the whole time, right? Before the show he’s pulling records, he’s all over the station, he stands throughout the show, punches the air & jumps around to the music. He’s in the phone room, then he’s back in the studio ... just all over the place. The show ends, and Tom’s out in the anteroom leaning on a stair rail regaining some equilibrium, cause he pushed hard, especially at the end, and everyone’s marveling at the foot-&-a-half high stack of pledge cards. So I go, “Wow, it’s like a marathon!” I meant running a marathon of course, so I had to kinda go “HAHAHA running a marathon HAHAHAHA!” to cover my tracks.
Dumb! Ass!

Auntie Christina was awesome on the phone. I totally choked when it came time for my shout-out and she let me ramble for a good minute plus while I was concocting what I wanted to say. IFLY, Auntie!
-
I called at the end only to add to the Bonnie pile. Andy made our pledge online at 9 o'clock because he's sick and has no voice. I was getting soup. Our pledge never got read so we thought maybe it didn't get added to The Best Show draw.
Anyway, Christina, I'm so glad I got to talk to you. You were great. Everyone was great. What a night for (still and always) The Best Show!
-
There was a stack of pledges that didn't get read on the air but they DID get included in all the drawings. Fear not!
Tom.
-

I agree. I too wanted to chat more, before realizing that would prevent her from taking more pledges. Also, my baby was yelling because I didn't put the "right" Yo Gabba Gabba DVD on.

Which one is the right one? My 2 year old loves them, and anything that promotes dancing and manners is alright with me.
-
It's probably lame of me to perpetuate the Yo Gabba Gabba talk in this thread, but I am a big fan, too. My son Otis dressed up as Plex for Halloween this year. "I am the magic robot from TVeeeee," he would tell people.

I pledged via web a few days early (which turned out to be a good thing because my internet punked out comcastically last night) but is this not the preferred way? Does the Best Show not get "credit" for my pledge? I picked the right premium. Just curious.
-
We did it! Anyway, YGG is the best children's show going. My 2yo loves it and has a Plex doll.
-

Pretty funny. Sounds like something I would say around Tom. Didn't know you were working the phones or I would have called, I pledged on-line during the show, but haven't heard the whole show yet, so I don't know if my pledge was mentioned (don't actually care if it was).
-
awesome costume Cramedog. YGG is one of the few kids' shows the baby watches that I can stand. She's quite partial to Barney and Caillou lately (insert image of me raising imaginary gun to temple).
-
Another Yo Gabba Gabba fan here. Watched 10+ episodes yesterday.
Wish I could find a youtube clip of when Cornelius were on.

You could not have been any cooler, Christina. You are awesome and I thank you for coming down and helping out!
Tom.
-
Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place, but I can't find the total for the marathon. All wfmu.org says (that I can find) is that their goal was exceeded.

Good grief, I'm totally blushing!

i'm gonna go ahead and agree w/ Tom Scharpling on this one. Auntie Christina is the coolest!

I'll chime in here, too, Christina. And thanks again for the books.

I third. I met her at the Gathering of the FOTs and she was (and, I'd imagine, still is) awesome.

But thanks, this has just made my day. You all are awesome too.

DJ Lance has been a pal of mine for years now (I actually created the dance called The Eagle Has Landed, as featured on YGG, and used to do it for Lance all the time when we worked at Amoeba together). Just another anecdote I'll tell my grandchildren to try to convince them that I counted for something. The weirdest part of his meteoric rise to fame has been Brad Pitt dressing up as him for Halloween.

i've never actually seen the episode. do you know which one it is?
and, that marathon was pretty great by the way! I gave until it hurt, which was immediately. these are tough times, but that kinda pain hurts so good.

Not sure which ep it's on, but they have at least 1 DVD out, and I think it's on it, because I know I've seen that one a lot.
-
Okay, I finally made it to the point in the podcast where my name was read. Exciting!
-
Got my WFMU shirt in the mail today. Looks sharp. Can't wait for the rest of the premiums!
-
I sent in my pledge before the holidays, but the check hasn't been debited from my account yet. Anyone else have a similar issue? I just wanna make sure (a) WFMU gets the dough, and (b) I get all my goodies.
-
never mind. I've already cleared this up with the very helpful Joe McGasko. But if anyone is having problems, definitely let him know so's WFMU and The Best Show can get yer dough!
-
Every time I hear a knock at my door I think it might be the mailman with a delightful package from New Jersey, but it is always just some dudes with important information about saving money with a combined gas and electricity service.
-
I received my premium today. The Michael Kupperman shirt is great.
-
Got my premium today! Worth every cent.
-
Amazing premium! :o :o :o It's gonna take me a while to get through this CD.
-
Received the premium today in the mail! Spectacular!!
-
I got my premium yesterday too! Everything looks great! (I have a new addition to my collection of tshirts to try to shrink in the wash- any tips?)

Hot water, and high heat in the dryer. I heard fabric softener helps too.
-
Got mine. Haven't listened to Tom's disc yet. I'm waiting for some time to sit back and pay attention. I'm listening to Terre T's Idiot Box compilation at work today, and it's unbelievably good. I have a few of the tracks on it already, but the gems I've never heard, and the way she's sequenced the thing makes it a solid beginning-to-end listening experience. FUN!
Love it. Thank you Terre T!
-
Got my premium today! I am crazy excited to listen to and wear everything!
-
haven't got it yet, but i got a bunch of other premiums too. so it'll take longer.
-
Is there any rhyme or reason to when the swag comes? Is there any basic mental algorithm I can do based on when I mailed in my check?
-
Premium made it to Ireland yesterday!

I haven't gotten mine either. I figure (hope) it'll come soon.

Does the fact that I'm using the installment plan affect when I get my stuff?
-
Premium made it to Ireland yesterday!
Ooh. Now I'm excited.
-
I got a note in the mail today. I have something waiting for me at the post office. Either it's the swag or something I ordered from Discogs when I was drunk.
-
I got mines today. The only good thing that happened today.
-
Pretty psyched this came today considering the typo in my house number on the label. Good look, mail man!
-
Does the fact that I'm using the installment plan affect when I get my stuff?
I'm paying by installment and mine arrived today. I can't wait to delve into this.
-
OH EM EFF JEE! I got it today! Currently iPoding it up. The shirts look even better in real life. Thanks, Tom and all who worked on this!
-
Just got my premium today. Holy crap, am I excited. Now I can fill gaps in the Best Show Logs! And the Terre T CD is awesome too, of course. Surprised/intrigued by inclusion of mono mix of the Mothers of Invention's "Trouble Everyday". DON'T JUDGE.

That Mothers track is great. I can only wonder what happened to Mr. Zappa.

Zappa.
My theory is, if the original Mothers broke up and never reformed, he'd be revered much in the way Captain Beefheart is. Or if he put out 40 fewer albums.

I got a note in the mail today. I have something waiting for me at the post office. Either it's the swag or something I ordered from Discogs when I was drunk.
You'll be interested to know it was neither.
But this time around I got it!

Ahhhhh! I'm going nuts! It still has not arrived.
I'm going on a hunger strike until it arrives. Oh never mind. I'm going to get some sushi.

I'm hoping I get my premium. I was a little late on sending the check out to FMU and I hope I didn't miss out.
-
I have listened to about 12 hours of early Best Show. I am NOT disappointed.
-
I haven't received mine yet and my hazel eyes are turning green. Should I do some following up?
-
Nothing yet.

Bribes always work.
At least that's what I did.

So, what was your bribe?

Arrived in Australia today. The only thing I don't like is that I can't listen to everything at once.
Or can I??????
-
I'd like to salute Tom Scharpling for his great reading of one of my recap segments in the second Fan Fiction track. It was thrilling to hear some of my "jokes" recited aloud.
-
Received mine on Friday, perfect for my 6 hour train ride up to Boston tomorrow.
The DJ Terre T CD is fantastic.
-
Received the rest of my original marathon swag today. Now I have 4 CDs worth of great to experience. And T-shirts to sweat in!
-
I got mine today. I am now swimming in merch and swag and the water feels great.

Should I watch Mr Brooks in its original form first?

Do you hear what you're saying?

I might want to enjoy the nuance of what I am sure is a masterclass performance from Dane Cook.
-
I would say yes.

I'm still waiting on my mouse pledge premiums to arrive. I had been trying to not even think about it, but seeing them arrive all over the world, the west coast feels a little further away from FMU than usual.
(Having posted this, it should guarantee that they'll show up tomorrow, right? Right?)

WFMU HATES OREGON!
I have yet to receive my premium either. Looks like my check just cleared on the 7th so I am guessing anytime now.
-
I think it's only right that I here congratulate my ancient computer for managing to play the fancy-dancy MP3 CD that was part of the reward for pledging.
Note: I just started listening to the first show ever. Good to know a certain caller's obsession with fudge is at least a decade old.

I Not to rub it in guys but I'm in Oregon and I got mine a week or two ago so I don't thing it's an OR thing. I think the post office has just been overrun with awesomeness, they'll get there.

I heard this yesterday, too, and was similarly satisfied.
I was feeling pretty pissed off this morning, but then I listened to the Fan Fiction readings on my way to work, and was grinning like a fool in no time. Great work, guys!

I haven't gotten my mouse pledge swag yet. Should I be worried?
-
I just got my mice last week, I wouldn't fret.
-
I received all the stuff I got last time.

Fred'ricks, this exact thing happened to me - I contacted Joe McGasko at WFMU by email and got it all straightened out.
-
I got my package today! THANKS to everyone who made it happen!
-
Bonnie, did you wind up getting both t-shirts and the pledge pack?
-
My stuff arrived yesterday. It took less than three weeks from when I wrote the check. Yeah, W.F.M.U.!
-
Hey. So are the bits that ended up on CDs edited out of the episodes on the disc? Or did I somehow just miss hearing a CD bit?
-

I think so...I got the Best Show t-shirt and a WFMU Garden State sticker, Cherry Blossom clinic premium, Evan Funk Davis' premium, and the awesome Radio Bear shirt. Does that sound right?
-
Hey. So are the bits that ended up on CDs edited out of the episodes on the disc? Or did I somehow just miss hearing a CD bit?
Yes, edited out.
My longtime hopes of ever hearing the full Gorch/Music Scholar/Citizens for a True Democracy bits seem to have hit a dead end.
-
Oh, great, Bonnie. I'm glad to hear it.

Hopefully the full Conventions Inc. call will make it to a premium at some point in the future.

From what I understand, the shows on the disc are the very first Best Shows from 2000. I don't think any shows that were removed from the archive because of the S&W CD's are on there.
I hope I'm wrong, though. I'd like to hear nem shows.
-
Those shows are totally there.
-
Merely sans the Wurster calls featured on the CDs.
-
Those shows are totally there.
But not all of them.

Hi all, a (now outed) forum lurker from the UK here.
Just got my swag and wanted to say a big thanks to all involved.
I couldn't afford to donate at the last regular marathon so gave a larger donation for the 24 hr marathon and got both Best Show premiums from the last 12 months.
Listening to "Tom" now, and the introduction of Zachary Brimstead on the Dump track gave me big smiles.
I've loaded all the Best Show Uncovered stuff onto my mp3 player and will be very anti-social for the next few days.
-
Mine apparently arrived back home today. I just have to somehow get it now. EXCITED.
-
Still nothing. Is anyone else missing theirs, or am I the only one?
I figure I'll give it another week, and then send an e-mail if nothing arrives.

I would definitely email right away. Joe is very friendly and helpful, and I'm sure he can let you know what's up super-fast.

The stuff for the upcoming marathon is already listed on the website, so I'd definitely try to get this settled as soon as you can.

Yep - I got my flyer in the mail yesterday. My package is currently MIA too, and i waited as long as possible to give it some time to get here. Just not to overwhelm Joe and all ... but I did write him recently, and he said that he was pretty sure he'd just mailed it out the previous week and to give it some time. I had to use my home address b/c I was in the middle of changing jobs and I didn't know when I'd be at the new gig. I don't have an internal lobby so my package would've just sat on my stoop.
Any way, I think this marathon mail out took Joe a lot longer to deal with than usual.

The mini-marathon has been somewhat of a swag misadventure for me, unfortunately. I got most of my stuff a couple of weeks ago (Joe had to do a second mailing), but the Best Show premium was missing. I emailed Joe about it. Today, I got a package from WFMU, and it's the (beautiful) Michael Kupperman shirt, but no MP3 CD or Terre T CD. I was looking forward to those so badly!
Maybe once the marathon is over, I'll send another email. I feel like a jerk for bugging the poor guy.
