Title: FOT Labs: Musicians, Audio Folks, Spoken Word Types...Telephone Game?
Post by: KickTheBobo on December 03, 2009, 01:05:56 AM
hi.

I've been playing a bit more of the musical instruments lately, and doing some experimenting with recording and had an idea that I'd like to try out.

Basically, it's a game of telephone, but it starts with a person creating a single track audio file. this could be a melody, a sample, a poem read aloud...whatever. Just one track though. They send it to the next person, who adds a new track and/or manipulates the existing audio.

and so on, and so on.

Could end up a complete mess, or it could turn out to be something interesting/ cool.

Unfortunately, in order to play you'd have to probably know the basics of audio recording and how to convert to a wav file and multitracking. If people are interested, but unsure of their abilities on the technical side I (or others) can post some easy tutorials and links to free production software.

any thoughts or criticism is welcome.

ktb

edit: Oh, and actual talent not necessary to participate. Just a desire to have some (potential) fun.

Since your edit, I might be down for this. I only dibble dabble, but I love collaborative art. Would also love to see it go beyond audio into other areas of creation!

I have SoundForge 4.5 and access to annoying phone menu prompts. In other words, I am in.

The definitive comedic work on automated phone prompts was performed by Matt Besser on his CD, "May I Help You, Dumbass". Apparently, one of those AOL free discs had a number for tech support that if you lived in new york and didn't dial 1 you would call Matt Besser's house. So he set up a recording device and pretended to be tech support.

SUGGESTION TO MAKE THIS EASIER FOR MOST FOLKS: the first file should have a steady BPM.

Cool! Glad to hear people are into trying this out.

Here's what I'm gonna do: by 5pm tomorrow we'll see who is in the rotation by responses to the thread. I will use a random number generator to create a roster based on the participants. If someone comes to the thread late, we can add them later on in the roster.

As far as bpm goes: yes, it would be a good idea to post what bpm you are working with. this doesn't mean you can't change it by slowing things down or speeding them up. Sometimes things get so mushed that a bpm is not really identifiable, so I would say post if if you can, if not then the next person in line just has to adapt.

I think keeping things with separate track might get a bit unwieldy, so it makes most sense if each person just mixes their contribution down to one track.

I think we should maybe use http://soundcloud.com/ (http://soundcloud.com/) to share the audio. I have created an FOT Labs group there http://soundcloud.com/groups/fot-labs (http://soundcloud.com/groups/fot-labs)

For those of you who might be beginners in audio production, http://www.freesound.org/ (http://www.freesound.org/) is a great source for audio samples. If you don't already have software, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a free cross-platform audio editor you can use. there is also a Windows version of Acid Pro 6 (of dubious legality) posted here (http://kickthebobo.com/acidpro.zip) if you want to play around.

so pretty much I am thinking that this is a "no rules" experiment, with the exception of the fact that you must incorporate the previous person's audio track into your own.

There also might come an instance where (for whatever reason) there is nothing else you can do to the previous track (or maybe it's perfect at that point, and you don't want to mess with it). In this case, you can "fold" and start a new one fresh. make sense?

any thoughts? I can't wait to get started on this!

Okay, here's the roster (I used random.org to generate).

Let's get cookin'. If any new folks want to join up, we'll add them to the end of the line.

One thought: maybe not a time-limit, but let's try to keep this moving along.

Hey Fredricks, sounds good. I didn't know you played drums!

By the way, people should try to keep the track volume low.  Push the gain too high and it'll REALLY sound like crap.  It should NOT look like this:

Let the last person worry about the volume!

naw, you gotta give folks time to process & respond. some of us are quick turnaround types and others might do multiple drafts, blah blah. you have to respect other people's processes.

maybe an unspoken rule? if you can't work on the piece and have a new revision within 3 days of receiving it, you can "pass" to the next person. you still pick up the game again in the next round.

During this time of dfk having to write and grade 8 exams in the next 11 days (a total of 220 4-6 page exams), not to mention computer labs and final projects, this idea is aces.

take your time, Grote. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I'd rather have a mix of some people who try and really work the previous piece, and some that do a free-form instinctual retooling than everyone abiding by certain constraints. Personally, I have become accustomed to rapid-fire meme shit a bit too much and could stand to get my patience back in shape. Hell, there was a time (not too long ago) where I had to actually wait a whole month for the new issue of New Mutants, but when it arrived it was a treat.

Down the line, I think a "lightning round" round type of collab could be fun. Like make it super intense with 20 minutes to turn something around. That is a fun game, but can get stressful very quickly. I'm not sure my fragile Id can rationalize auto-tuning a Dave From Knoxville lecture on numerical analysis over the sounds of breaking glass (dfk_MARKOVChains-breakbeat4.wav) in a span of less than a week. I would need to think on that for awhile.

good job, Grote!

That's the whole deal: no matter what the previous person did, you just have to deal with it as best you can. I think after a few rounds of chopping/ pasting/ reverb/ layering you probably wouldn't be able to even distinguish elements from previous iterations. We'll see, though.

The file you uploaded to soundcloud seems to be an .ogg file. Is there any way to replace that with a .wav or .aiff version? I am not sure how certain software deals with editing compressed audio. I know some waveform editors can handle mp3, but not sure about ogg.

It'd be really super nice if folks could upload the file uncompressed. If it gets compressed over and over it'll sound like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy. You'd think that would sound cool but it really doesn't. :(

I tried uploading a .wav file, but it kept failing so many times (it was over 50MB) that I tried mp3, but then that just came up blank.  So I tried Ogg as a last resort.

Gimme a couple days and I'll re-up is as a .wav, and maybe by then DFK will have more time.  If not, we can either jump to the next name on the last or give Fredericks another crack at it, depending on how hard and fast these rules are.  I like Fredericks' idea, but that might be counter to the mutant spirit of the telephone game.

If anyone needs to convert mp3 to wav for working on their iteration, there is this freeware utility that does just that:

http://wav2mp3.webternals.com/pages/download (http://wav2mp3.webternals.com/pages/download)

Also, this site seems to convert audio formats: http://media-convert.com/ (http://media-convert.com/)

I haven't tried either, but they seem legit.

I know it isn't ideal to compress-decompress-compress as far as audio quality goes, but I think for the sake of this experiment, it's probably fine.

If anyone is having any trouble, shoot me a PM and I can help you out if needed.

DanB, you are up my man!

I'm thinking that for the sake of momentum, maybe we should have a 24hr window for each turn. You can always just pass and then pick up again next go around.

Probably should be that the person whose turn it is should PM the next in line either when they are done, or pass.

Sorry, guys, but the .wav upload turned out to be 5:21 of silence, just like the mp3.  I think Soundcloud just wants me to work in .ogg.  If Erech or anyone has a problem with it, let me know, and I'll try Sendspace or something.

Baron, you don't necessarily need to record audio. You could just edit the previous waveform and maybe add samples and whatnot. I believe that Audacity (free) lets you layer stuff. There are tons of free sound effects you can get online as well.

I can give you, or anyone else a hand with software & whatnot if you need.

Would love to have you join in! Let me know and I'll put you on the roster.

I have assembled audio for animations before, but I have never actually tried to assemble a song so I'm kind of excited and nervous about this, as I get ready to work on it. I have questions about what I should do here, but the cool part is that instead of asking these questions, I'm just going to jump in and do what comes to mind and hope I do it right. 24 hours is so short, but I will do my best!

After sitting with this for a bit I see that I am too unprepared for this, I don't know the tools well enough, so I've decided to pass. I will study up on this junk and come to the table better suited next time.

Sorry to let you down, Fredericks!

Scratch that, I'm gonna try anyhow.

I'm not good at this stuff at all, but I've always wondered, what tool is used to take vocals out of tracks for mashups and stuff like that? I don't get how that works with out the master recording.

It doesn't always work, but usually you can take the one side of a stereo mix, invert its waveform, and then mix it with the other side. Any sound that was on both sides will get cancelled out. It's like how noise canceling headphones work. It also removes anything else that was on both sides (the bass part, etc).

A lot of mashups are just made from instrumental bonus tracks on CD and 12" singles though. They make those for club DJs.

if you need to, try uploading as mp3. If your file size is too big, that might be the problem. It seemed to work fine for me uploading a 60mb WAV.

this is a decent program to convert between formats: http://www.4musics.com/wav-mp3-wma-ogg-converter.htm (http://www.4musics.com/wav-mp3-wma-ogg-converter.htm)

Edit 2: If you need any of the individual sound files I used, I have them.

Hi audiodudes and dudettes:

I just made a new account at soundcloud and joined up, but since I came late to the game I don't know whose turn it is and I am having a hard time figuring out what the rules are... I have a lot of experience mucking around with sounds, but can't seem to find a reference point of this remix/telephone game besides the phrase "chocolate laxative."

I've got all that figured out now... Can you add me to the list? What are the turnaround times of these? I mean, how long before it's my turn to muck?

(if I'm allowed on the audio playground, that is)

I think we are working from just the mixed-down wav file from the previous person's turn. Separate tracks would be great, but maybe down the line we'll try that.

for now: No Rules except: 24 hour turns, PM the next person & file must retain SOME element of previous version.

Sorry sorry sorry! I've gotta pass - I was en route to my parent's place for the holidays when I got the pass and I've got no capabilities to add from here... And I'm out of commission until the 30th...

Please go easy on me. I want in on the next one...

alright folks, I gotta start cracking the whip here. Please, when you are finished, PM the next person in line, whether you submit or pass.

we'll let the last one slide, but from hereonin: 24 hour turns.

I'm about to PM Amiright. let's get this cooking again!

You are too polite.   Who's holding up the process?

For shame.

It's my fault. I ruin everything.

I'm the worst.

Are you THE clay? Because you share a bit of his self-inflicted pessimism. Which makes you alright in dfk's book.

No, I'm not that clay.

What programs would any of you recommend using to make actual melodies and/or beats from scratch, easily? My part this time was experimental in the truest sense of the word, but now that I have the editing under my belt, I'd like to make something more along the lines of an actual tune.

No! Your contribution, along with everyone else that has participated thus far has been great. I can't wait to hear some more from the vast JFM phone archive.

OK. We are coming close to the end of this round (i just PM'd Mark from Helsinki to remind him of his turn). I will be sending out information within the next few days giving information about the signup for round 2. If you participated in this, or passed you will receive this info.

Round Two is going to run like clockwork. I will include all the details in the signup email. I appreciate all the contributions and enthusiasm, but there needs to be a set protocol to keep things humming along.

There will also be information on the super-experimental "Lightning Round" version. Not for the faint of heart!

STAY TUNED.

this is a repost of an email you all should have received. Forgive me if you were excluded from that list for any reason.

edit: all times referenced are EST (Newbridge, NJ) time.

FOTLabs II - The Reckoning

Hello Fellow Audio Adventurers,

Thank you all for participating in the first round of FOTLabs Audio Telephone game. Consider this email to be an invitation to signup for Round Two. I feel that the project was successful (and interesting!) but feel we need to make some changes in regards to management in the future.

The rules:

1. Signups for this round will close as of 7pm Sunday December 27th. Any late signups are welcome, but will be added to the end of the roster.

2. The game begins promptly at 8pm Sunday December 27th. the roster will be generated randomly and will be sent out immediately after signups close.

3. Each turn is 24 hours long. You are allowed to pass to the next person. The person whose turn it is is responsible for notifying the next person in the roster whether they finish a piece OR pass.

4. We will only use soundcloud.com for communication from here forward. There's no reason for mucking up the FOTboard with PMs and posts (gets too confusing).

5. Your post must be in Aiff or Wav format.

6. If you have not signed up for soundcloud, please create an account. If you already have an account, MAKE SURE that your username is identical/ close to your FOTboard handle.

7. The list of people this is going out to has been limited to FOTs for now. If we find that things move along smoothly and people are having fun, we may open up participation to non-board members (by consensus, of course)

8. Your version of the audio MUST include an element from the previous turn BUT you may also mine other previous versions for material as well.

9. Remember: this is a project that welcomes slick production as well as gritty beginner experiments. There is nothing riding on this, so if you are just starting out with audio DON'T be intimidated. Nobody is judging your contribution by anything other than participation and enthusiasm. If you have trouble with software or have any questions on technical stuff, post a message and someone will be glad to help out!

Okay, that's pretty much it. Email me at kickthebobo@gmail.com to be added to the signup list, or if you have any questions/ comments.

happy new year,

ktb

I'm giving this a bump, because I think it got short shrift during the holidays. It's 2010 now, it's still going and it's fun! I'd never tried my hand at music before this, but they let me play anyhow. Don't let your inexperience stop you!

Dear Fellow Audio Experimenter,

Thank you for participating in the FOTLabs Audio Project. We seem to have come to a bit of a standstill with this endeavor, but there are some out there that are still interested in keeping this going.

For this new iteration, the rules have changed (yet again). We will be doing 3 day turns. I feel that this is ample amount of time to turn something around.

We will begin the next round with a sample of a simple sine wave. The roster will be generated by random and posted to the soundcloud discussion.

Please note: Our own Fredricks has begun an offshoot group here that you all should check out!: http://soundcloud.com/groups/fredericks-soundlab

You should message the next particpant when you are completed with your remix.

If you would like to be added to the roster for FOTLabs Audio Projects - "The Annunciation", please contact me via soundcloud, the FOT board or at kickthebobo@gmail.com

Thank you!

Not at all Mark! A project like this needs feedback, and your last soundcloud post made me realize that 24hr turnarounds were probably a bit too tight. I'd rather have more people participating, so we'll see if easing up on the time constraint will help a bit.

Hi FOTLabs Group.

I want to apologize to everyone.  I never saw Danball's last email to me.  This was due to sharing an inbox with my spouse...and kids...and them not knowing how to mark something as "unread."  Trust me that it was not sloth or rudeness.  It was an honest mistake.

But I am going to bow out for now anyway because family and work are taking their toll.  I hope to return some day soon, and I hope no one has added me to their shit list.

All the best,
Jon
