Title: People who should stop
Post by: Sarah on December 18, 2009, 08:18:57 AM
The other day, I recorded that George Lopez talk show because Morrissey was going to perform.  I shouldn't have.  The sight of Morrissey sporting the same old greasy pompadour, a shiny shirt stretched taut over his middle-aged pot belly, was very depressing.  He brought to mind an MC at a seedy night club/strip joint in the seventies.  When someone who looks like that tries to croon (his pipes have grown a tad rusty, unsurprisingly) about youthful angst, the effect is extremely unsavory.

That could be a good look.

Yeah sometimes I'm glad John Lennon died for this very reason... I have to wonder what the 80's and early 90's would have brought...

That's unfortunate, because I love the cover of his last album:

He just looks boss, with a bit of weight on him, and those tough-guy rolled up sleeves. Holding that kid too? Love it.

Maybe not so much the guy you want to see oscillating wildly at this point, I'd agree.

I've often said that if Jimi Hendrix had lived, he'd be doing Ford truck commercials.  I'm so happy to see someone finally pointing out the obvious about Morrissey, too!  It IS a little creepy.

I'm thinking pop/rock/etc. musicians should face mandatory retirement--from live performance, anyway--at, say, forty.  They hang on so damn long nowadays.

Uh oh.  Better go see Ted Leo in the next 10 months!

I think Weezer needs to call it a day.  It's just not cute anymore.

And of course Fox News needs to be nuked out of existence.

The ones who have dignity can continue to perform, and I include Mr. Leo in that category.  It's those others I want to send off to a home.

I am seeing a sequel to Logan's Run in this.  The highlight would be seeing Mickey Dolenz explode in mid-air.

Sometimes Morrissey sports a suit and tie, which befits his position.

I don't understand how it took 12 posts in this thread to point out George Lopez is the one who really needs to quit. Racist creep. How's he booking so many good guests too?

Blech.

The commercial for Lopez's show is on Fox Soccer Channel all the time, so I've seen it to the point where I can recite it along with him. It mostly consists of him yelling "Lopez".

Also, there's the promise of "late night... like you've never seen it before". I've not seen the show, but I imagine that there's a monologue, maybe a sketch, then the guests talk about their latest film, and sometimes someone plays a song. I've seen that before.

I've never really liked Weezer but I recently heard a Rivers Cuomo solo thing that wasn't too bad.

Yeah, right? It's literally the Jay Leno show, but with a guy who can't stop telling me how latino he is instead of a guy who asks all his female guests about their boobs.

I think Morrissey has aged kind of nicely, actually.

CA ROU SEL!
CA ROU SEL!

Maybe we should re-title the thread "Whose Crystal is Blinking?"

You know who should stop, nobody that's who.

I think you get out there and do it until either you can't do it, or no one wants to see you do it. Morrissey may have aged but people still line up to see him and he's lucky enough to make a living singing his songs.  I haven't bought a Morrissey album since I was in college but I don't care if people want to listen. Besides what else is Morrissey going to do?

I like a ton of artists whose best days are miles behind them but I respect the fact that they get out there and do it.

I saw Muddy Waters when he was in his sixties.  His guitar wasn't prime but his voice still killed.

Besides, who will the Latino teenagers look up to if he retires?

George Lopez is Latino?!
