This started as a "Best Show Coincidence" where I listened to an archives show where Tom played "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" then he played the same track that week and I loved the song so sprung for the reissue which has been sitting on my stereo since last week. I put it on a few hours ago an haven't stopped listening. This is their first album. I was wondering where to go from here. I am really amazed by this record and am also frustrated because I consider myself pretty well versed in music of this kind. It's annoying to know that you skipped on something so great just because of a stupid disco film. I mean this rivals prime Kinks.

I like the disco film (one of the most kickass opening sequences in a movie too) b/c it was one of the first albums I owned that wasn't like Disney music or whatever - I'm not saying I could listen all 4 sides in a row, but I can deal with that chunk of the Bee Gees output. So even though I like that stuff, I had sorta relegated them to the disco file, and came out on the other end drawing the same conclusions as you. I had no real idea that this was far from the whole story on these guys.

1st is one of the best pop records ever, but sadly it goes downhill from there. Idea is ok with a few great songs, Odessa not so great but listenable, and everything after that is standard radio Bee Gees.

As far as disco Bee Gees go, I think Main Course, pretty much their first in that style (it has "Jive Talkin'"), is pretty strong. "Nights on Broadway" is a classic. I think Gilly is sort of underrating those early records, too, but I can't disagree that 1st is best.

I think it depends on how much you can take of Gibb's voice. I think he overdoes it on Odessa where it distracts from the songs.
