(sorry, had to)
-
The Wire [HBO]
Not in any order of preference:
Gilmore girls [WB/CW]
Once and Again [ABC]
The Office (UK) [BBC America]
Extras [HBO]
State of Play [BBC]
Curb Your Enthusiasm [HBO]
Arrested Development [Fox]
The Sopranos [HBO]
Deadwood [HBO]
Carnivale [HBO]
Generation Kill [HBO]
Mad Men [AMC]
Breaking Bad [AMC]
The Staircase [Sundance Channel]
Perfect Strangers [ABC]
I'm defining a 2000s show as one in which at least a full season aired after 1/1/00, thus disqualifying Freaks and Geeks and Sports Night
Biggest disappointment of the decade: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Have not seen but own on DVD: Friday Night Lights and The West Wing (have seen some of The Sorkin Years, but not enough to issue any judgment)
-
I'm gonna do a different spin on this, 5 favorite tv seasons of the decade, no particular order:
The Wire s2
The Wire s4
Arrested Development s2
Peep Show s2
The Thick of It s1
-
The Simpsons were no good for ten years?

Most fans of The Wire will tell you seasons 1 and 3 are the best, but I agree with you. I think when things strayed away from the central Barksdale/Bell/Stanfield plotline it actually made the show better.
-
The Wire seasons 1-4
Generation Kill
The Corner (haven't seen all of it)
The Wire: It's All Connected (making-of doc)
And this:

Trailer park boys

Pretty much all the good ones have been said, so I will add all of Peep Show and ask the host to please close this thread now as it has clearly run its course.
Oh yeah, and King of Queens. What? ;D
-
The Wire
Peep Show
Friday Night Lights
The Office US & UK
Extras
Human Giant
We Can Be Heroes
Summer Heights High
Gilmore Girls
Curb Your Enthusiasm
-
Brass Eye paedophile special
Jam

Peep Show S1 and 2 made me laugh harder than anything in the history of TV. "No, you're not a paedo." "Good thing you were wearing your boots."
I've been rewatching Arrested Development on DVD and it really is as good as it seemed at the time. I'd put a plug for the American Office and the British Office but for different reasons.
Michael Emerson's performance on Lost.

I agree with a lot of the above and I don't care what anybody says... I love Big Bang Theory.

That's my Dad's favorite show, Gibby. It was also very popular with the rest of my extended family (on the other side) at Thanksgiving.
I watched a seven-minute Sheldon's best jokes mix. I don't love it, but I don't hate it. That show (and even 2.5 Men) is so much better than According to Jim, Home Improvement, even Everybody Loves Raymond (all the fat guy-hot wife stuff) that I can't put it in the dreck category.

I only discovered this very recently, but the 13 episodes of Saxondale brought me more joy than any other TV series.

A couple that deserve mention:
Party Down
Band of Brothers
Once and Again [ABC]
Really? I don't really have an opinion on this show, but I did get my SAG card doing regular extra work on it. I was an employee of the dotcom she worked at. Had my own desk and everything.

Looking forward to Four Lions its supposedly going to be one of the films at Sundance i believe. What about Always Sunny didn't see that mentioned much.

I forgot all about this i meant to check this out after seeing the clips on youtube especially the anger management clip.

Incredible. The third season falters a bit, but the first two seasons are masterworks. I'll look for you on my DVDs.

This is, honestly, the best thing Dominic West has been involved with outside The Wire since The Wire started.

I don't know much about this show. Is it comparable to Gilmore Girls? I love Gilmore Girls.
-
I should add Sunny in Philly, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but there is something to be said for a show centered around the worst examples of human beings.
-
It probably wouldn't make my top 10 or anything, but I like the first couple of seasons of That 70s Show. The best stuff aired during the 90s, but by Omar's rules, it's eligible for inclusion.
-
I throw in my vote for Tim & Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job! for their originality and purity of vision. Also, the Daily Show was amazing for the first few years of the decade.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force S1 and part of S2
Sealab 2021 S1
-
Sealab is tremendously underrated

I forgot all about the greatness of Adult Swim. I'd add Metalocalypse and Home Movies to that list. I also thought of The Mighty Boosh.

Really? Consensus among almost everyone I know is that 1 and 3 are obviously fantastic, but 2 and 4 are the real masterpieces. Speaking from a Euro-centric viewpoint here. Would be interesting if there was a transatlantic difference.
While I'm here:
The Wire
The Armando Iannucci Shows (this is a truly wonderful piece of television which seems destined to go down in history as 'sorely underappreciated'.)
Arrested Development
Peep Show
The Thick of It
-
The last two seasons of "Strangers with Candy" were in the 00's. So, yeah.

Well I tried it and couldn't make it through the first episode.
I'd like to follow this statement by saying Party of Five is and incredible masterwork, which is almost as misguided and wildly dismissive as Omar's comment.
It just felt too much like a typical ABC drama. There is a reason there are only a few primetime network shows I like.

It's much more of a drama than Gg, although it certainly compares in terms of quality. It focuses on two families grappling with divorce. Cast and writing are superb. The first season writing staff includes people like renowned playwrights Donald Margulies and Michael Weller.
The first two seasons are on DVD. The third and final season DVD set was produced and ready to go a couple of years ago, but it has still not been released for some reason.

For what it's worth, I originally considered the pilot to be one of the weakest s1 episodes, although after watching the full season I rewatched the pilot and liked it more. Once & Again may not be everyone's cup of Newbridge Tea, but it's not typical network fare.

Dang, me too. I asked to have this thread closed far too early. Home Movies and Ventures are two of my all time favoritist shows ever!

I knew there was stuff we forgot. How'd we miss Venture Bros. with them being on the show a short time ago.
I just started watching Lost because of this thread and I can't find enough time in a day for it. I love/hate compelling, cliffhangery TV like that.

Biggest disappointment of the decade: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
I'm bormping this thread because as per usual I'm totally behind on my TV watching. I'm just now watching the pilot for this show on Netflix Instant. I'd forgotten how magical the Sorkin touch was.
This is a terrible show but I can't stop watching, at least for now.
-
Oh scoop, how did I miss this thread?!
What a topic! I'll take a stab at it.
-The Wire
-Arrested Development
-Undeclared
-Mad Men
-Breaking Bad
-Lost
-24 (may not have been the greatest season to season but the concept alone I think deserves mention)
- Friday Night Lights
- Party Down
- Dexter
- Clone High (I REALLY liked this show back when it was on)
- The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
- Archer

As John Mulaney said recently, the fact that Sorkin just COULDN'T let go of political affairs on a show about comedy was REALLY heavy handed. Yes it's a drama but it felt like The West Wing Variety Hour. And Sarah Paulson was so annoying. Not regarding her character (though a little) but I just am not a fan of her acting either.
And also, no way one dude writes a show like that. Gimme a break. That's offensive to writers.
-
Please, could someone come over here and make me stop watching this?
-
It only gets worse! Although the two-parter with John Goodman as the sheriff of Parump, NV is a bright spot if I remember correctly. Then again I'll probably watch anything with John Goodman.

See, I thought the pilot was pretty good from what I remember. Well, aside from the Harriet/crazy Christians thing. It was kind of promising.
Wait. Was that coke/drunk driving thing in the pilot? Where the coke addict (which is basically Sorkin) gets on a high horse to someone who got a DUI about how his drug doesn't impair while driving? Yeah, nevermind. Fuck that show.

Sopranos.

I just want to second The Trailer Park Boys.

I finished watching that thing this weekend. That show made me so mad.

I think she meant Studio 60.

No, sorry! that's what I get for not quoting - I had been foofing earlier this weekend about watching Studio 60, hating it and not being able to stop watching. I finally finished the whole blessed series.
Trailer Park Boys, now ... that's one i haven't seen but I'd like to check out.

That's a relief - I had gotten ahead of myself and feel happy that I erased my 4 page defense of the boys before posting!

I would love to see this along with a dissertation in Rush apologetics
-
My dad has insisted I watch Gavin & Stacey many times but I don't like the duo of best friends as it's main characters. Little Britain is crude and just a string of catchphrases. Office and Extras, the less said about Ricky Gervais the better.
League of Gentlemen series 2 & 3 aired in 2000 and 2002. The first in was undoubtedly it's best. Spaced also debuted at the end of the 90's and Freaks & Geeks in September '99. Had to check those myself.
First series of Look Around You was fun but the second which expanded on the concept turned out abysmal.

Undo can't fix it I'm afraid. We'll have to wait until the next time someone criticizes them...
-
Has Slings and Arrows been mentioned yet? It's been a while since I watched any so I'm not sure how it stacks up compared to other things, but definitely a contender.

Sarah Silverman Program
Yeah! I was lukewarm on the first season, but seasons two and three were really great.
