Hi gang,
I've noticed lately that there seems to be more and more Friends of Tom in Chicago; with that, I'm wondering how many would be interested in a FOT meet up? One of the bars I deal with (The California Clipper in humboldt park) has a movie night on Tuesdays, but it doesn't start until 10pm. I'm thinking we could start doing it either once a month, or every two weeks? Chicago--especially in the wintertime--is tough on weekly meet ups, but maybe we can give it a whirl and if there's enough of a demand and return, we'd possibly bump it to a weekly event?
Thoughts? Idears? Feel free to post or PM me.
best,
stephen

I'd definitely be interested in some kind of meet up. Even though I don't live downtown, it's not too hard for me to get anywhere.
-
That might actually be doable for me, especially if it were on a Friday. Certainly more convenient than Jersey City.

Humboldt Park is not downtown...its way northwest of the loop. Closer to Wicker Park/Ukranian Village and Logan Square.

i'm thinking tuesday night listening parties, Josh. But we'll get you a pope mobile if it means a special appearance!
-
I'm in the suburbs and have two kids so I probably not the most reliable attendee but I'd try like a dickens to attend.
-
Tuesdays might work, too.
-
I'm in.
-
I'm down in Chicago once every month or two, and have friends there who are fans of the shows but not participants on the board, so I'd be interested as well. Keep me posted.
-
Hi guys! I don't post here often, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents:
In my experience, trying to listen to something as a group never goes very well. Everyone wants to talk, and then you can't hear the show! As someone who doesn't go out much and likes to get to bed early on weeknights, I'd much prefer a Friday or Saturday night thing. I think that would also be most convenient for people who are coming from the suburbs.
Just some thoughts! Is anyone else going to the Ted Leo show in March? I think it would be really fun to do a meetup before or after that!
-
Yeah, well, it's warm here.
-
I'm on the west coast now, but I'll be back in Logan Square come March. I want to say that for a first time meet up we may want to wait til it gets quite a bit warmer. Also If I'm the only person who isn't 21 I'll pipe down, but if there is any way we can work it out so that college age FOTs can attend that would be cool, but if that's not an issue that's cool too. I just know a few other kids at SAIC and Columbia who would be interested and I think we are all 19 or 20. I know a few places we might be able to have it in the Logan Square Wicker Park areas. Just throwing it out there.

I'd definitely be up for a post-Ted Leo meetup.
-
I could possibly attend this, with a greater likelihood now that my wife has joined the FOT ranks.
-
If there are folk heading up from the southern parts of the midwest, maybe we could carpool. I think Bloomington is pretty much parallel with Pinkstaff.
-
We're a bit North, it looks like.
Pinkstaff?
Also it would definitely have to be a weekend thing for me.

Is there a story behind the name of that town?

Is that a rhetorical question?
-
Hmm. Thought I replied to that yesterday.
Pinkstaff was the name of the first white family to settle the area, way back before everything was dirty.
-
Those whites. Always messing things up.

Read the Bible much? I don't think you do. The only time things weren't dirty was in the 30-40 minutes after Adam's literal creation when a rib was literally pulled from his side and literally transformed into a woman, the way women are literally created in the womb to this day (foeti are men until literally the moment before birthing, when God makes a decision whether or not this one should have its ribs reconstructed into a vagina, it's a lot like Schroedinger's cat in many ways) and then Eve ate that literal apple and the perfect world that might have been, free of fruit and full of shame-free public displays of sexual affection, was replaced with this one that sucks.
Then the literal flood came.

Moral of that story: Ignorance is bliss.
Damn tree of knowledge.

Everybody focus now.

Why yes it is I SwamiPat. We gotta DO IT for the chicago meet up. We need to pick a bar (how about Delilah's or perhaps the ever classy Coles) and a date! DO IT!
-
If it happens, it should coincide with lisajanepersky's visit, I think.
-
a good idea. when would that be?
-
I'll try to get in / hang around outside whenever it is picked, cause the drinking age can't stop me from at least trying.. What neighborhood works best for everyone?
-
Maybe we could pick a restaurant that serves alcohol instead of a bar? I feel for the under-21s out there! I'd be cool with anything; I don't drink much, but I do understand alcohol's role as social lubricant. It just seems unfair to leave out Dan in Chicago and his friends!
Lisa Jane Persky said she'll be in Chicago around July 10th. Maybe we could have a meet-up or two before that so we know each other by July. :)
JBissell, let's definitely plan something for post-Ted Leo... even if it's just us. :D Are you familiar with the area around the Bottom Lounge? I've actually never been to a show there, so I don't know if there's a good place nearby to have a drink and a chat.
Dan, my fiance ("Tom from Chicago") and I are in Lakeview. Anything that's near a CTA station is good for us!
-

I actually have never been there either, though I know it's pretty close to Union Park where they have Pitchfork fest.

I looked at a map and I see that the Twisted Spoke is about a half mile up the road. Have you ever been there? They have delicious burgers, a good beer list, and are open until 3 a.m. on Saturdays!
-
Bottom Lounge has an amazing patio up stairs. Go there, take photos, chat... all-in-one.
-
P.W., that sounds good for LJP's July visit... but a rooftop patio in Chicago in March doesn't sound like a good idea!
-
Hi Everyone...this is my first post (how exciting!), but I would definitely be interested in a Chicago meet-up. I'm about 80% in for the Ted Leo show...if there's interest in the meet up, I'll make the show a priority.
-
Hi Bernard! That's awesome. Let's maybe make a list of who's for sure going to Ted Leo and/or interested in a post-show meet-up on that day (Saturday, March 13th):
*Sara B. in Chicago (me)
*Tom in Chicago (my partner)
-
i just signed this contract where i get a million dollars if i can stay in this old creepy murdered-ghost mansion all night, let's have it there!
-

Are you planning to film the event and release it as a remake of The Ghost and Mr. Chicken?

I had nightmares about that movie when I was nine. Those bloodstained piano keys!

I am out of town until the 18th and am insanely jealous of that Ted Leo show cause I haven't seen him since I was in high school. In any case I will not be able to go on the 13th but don't hold it up on my account, I'm patient.

I'm thinking of visiting Chicago in June. What are some economical hotels in the area that you can recommend? Thanks.

Where'll you be visiting? Northside? Southside? 'Burbs? Lookin' for a place downtown?
-
Wherever the Crossroads festival is going to be.
-
The Crossroads festival is in the south suburbs, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview to be exact.
If you're flying into Midway you could stay at any of the chain hotels near the airport and you're only about 10 minutes away from Toyota Park.
This is very near my neck of the woods so if you need any more info or recommendations let me know.

sort of, but it'll be more like if the blair witch project was a vlog
-
I think I'll be arriving in Chicago on the 11 of July. I would love to see any of you and take FOTo's. If we meet up, it would be good for me if we had at least an hour or two of light for pix. I'll be checking in here or you can reach me at http://twitter.com/lisajanepersky
-
you can count me in for Ted Leo and it sounds like we need a second meet up for lisa jane persky's visit in july!
-
Yes! So the Ted Leo count is:
* Sara B.
* Tom McH.
* JBissell
* SwamiPat
I apologize if I should know your real human names, but I don't!
I think a second meetup in July with LJP would be excellent. AP Mike, would you be interested in meeting with some of your fans in June, or will you only be going to the festival?
-
if you guys need something to do during the day on the 13th, check out the Hideout's SXSW send off party with Tyler Jon Tyler, Hollows, Mickey, Plastic Crime Wave, and a bunch of other bands.

I'm in for sure for Ted Leo and the rest. I am however bad at remembering to look at the message board so if one of lets me know via twitter: www.twitter.com/btof or by emailing me at megan@the-hypocrites.com that would be awesome. Thanks!
-
I am in, along with my wife, for the meet-up afterwards, at least. We're coming back Saturday night from a quick trip to Nashville and might not make it to the show.
My wife does not listen to TBS, so let's all do our best to make her feel inadequate. Thanks in advance.
-
Okay, so the Ted Leo count is:
*Sara B.
*Tom McH.
*JBissell
*SwamiPat
*BTOF (Megan)
*Bernard, and
*Mrs. Bernard
I'm researching places where we could go. If there are no younguns, that leaves bars open. Anyone have any suggestions for a place nearby?
-
I will be in Chicago on April 17th, 18th, and 19th. Will Ted Leo be there then?
-
Dave, I doubt we can convince Ted to come back, but my fiance and I would love to meet you! Maybe we could have a second meet-up that coincides with your visit?
But let's talk about this Saturday! How does everyone feel about the Fulton Lounge? It's a few blocks away (955 W. Fulton). This should be a direct link to walking directions. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1375+West+Lake+Street,+Chicago,+IL+60607&daddr=fulton+lounge+chicago&hl=en&geocode=FekefwIdUWPG-iG0C9-HIi7aDSkpj30iJi0OiDErGpAa6cJAcA%3BFSAkfwIdi4nG-iFLRh2wgpZEzykfj-aT0CwOiDHXatHUJ1fLlA&gl=us&mra=cc&dirflg=w&sll=41.886097,-87.65635&sspn=0.006358,0.01236&ie=UTF8&z=16) My friend who lives in the area says it's a nice place and not too loud for talking.
If anyone wants to email me, it's leafmeal at gmail dot com. I'm also on Twitter as yellowcardigan. If you want to email on the day of the show, you should email Tom, because he has an iPhone and will have access to email, and I don't. He's tommchenry at gmail dot com.
Does this sound good for all involved? I feel like I kind of took charge of this thread, but um... I have the social planning gene, I can't help it. ::)
-

WHAT?!?! Don't apologize! I'm glad you stepped up!
I still plan on making it and look forward to meeting everyone. If you have trouble finding me, I'll be the awesome-looking guy.
-
I'll be wearing my Kupperman Best Show shirt for ID purposes.
-
Awesome. I'll be wearing my WFMU Radio Bear shirt.
JBissell, if you don't mind me asking, what is your human first name?
-
Quick question: was the plan for a meet up before or after the show?
-
After, right? Bernard, you had said you and your wife probably wouldn't get into town until during/after the show, so I thought after would be better.
-

Yes, great! I mean, I don't want it schedule around my accord or nuttin', but yeah we probably won't make it to the show. So after is perfect!
-
Since there are so few of us, it seems nonsensical and almost cruel to schedule it when two people can't be there. :) I'm excited to meet you guys!
If anyone wants to exchange cell phone #s for night-of texting, just email me at the above address or DM me on Twitter (yellowcardigan). I have Megan/btof's number, so we'll be coordinating through text.
-
JBissell, if you don't mind me asking, what is your human first name?
Jon
-
so i might not be showing up to the show, due to the super gig at the Hideout, and being that i'll start drinking at like 4, who knows how i'll end up. but i'll do my darnist to show up either late or at the after show shindig! also i'll be rock'n the best show shirt too.
-
Places might be busy since people will probably be celebrating St. Patrick's Day but I'm cool with Fulton Lounge or anywhere else.
-
wait is this the 17th now? cause i'm gonna be in austin for SXSW.
-
Nigel, it's tonight. Everyone is out getting plastered today, though, because it's the weekend of St. Patrick's Day, I guess? Our neighborhood is crawling with drunks, but I'm hoping the West Loop won't be too bad.
SwamiPat, I hope we see you!
-
what time you kids going to the bar?
also i do warn you, i already started drinking, and the day full of rock'n'roll wont be helping! ;D
-
The show is all ages, which means it has to end by 11 p.m. I would look for us at Fulton Lounge around 11:30 then, if not earlier?
-

Looks like there are two openers so that sounds about right.
-
oh nice! i might come out then, except i'm not a big drinker, i havent been here long enough for anyone to really know me, and plus i got bad social anxiety problems. if i do show up though i'm the guy that looks like zach galifianakis's stunt double.
-
oh nice! i might come out then, except i'm not a big drinker,
Don't worry about that, I have to drive back home so I won't be drinking much either.
-
sorry i missed out. gig sold out. but i'll see you kids next time!
-
It was a great time!
-
yeah i think i ended up drinking more than i had intended, but i had a blast!
-
jpg?
-
The second guy that got onstage at the end was the lead singer of Jai Alai Savant.
-
jpg?
we got a pic - i think it was on sara's camera?
-
It was Tom's camera. I'll try to upload it tonight.
And let me second that it was a great time! If you missed out but want to come next time (and we don't have a plan for next time yet, but maybe soon), you definitely should. I can say that Jon, Bernard, and BTOF/Megan didn't try to murder me even a little.

It was my first trip to Chicago's meat packing district that didn't include multiple homicides. Here's to keeping my new year's resolutions!

Okay, I'm coming to Chicago and I want to see you. I have one day to shoot. That day is Sunday, July 11. Who wants in? Please use twitter or email me or message me on the forum. Looking forward to this! xoxo

Digging up this old thread because we finally got that picture from Tom's camera! Here we are at the Fulton Lounge after Ted Leo, bundled up in our winter coats before heading back out into the cruel winter night:
