Toonies and nickles are not the same thing, Tom. Toonies are worth like 11 america nickles.

For shame.

I saw that too. I wouldn't call Mike "deranged." Spike is deranged. Mike is just kind of...dark.

The Larry the Perv analysis the interviewer made (I wont ruin it) choked me up so bad I nearly exploded. Bejeezus what a horrible, hilarious thought!

Great interview, great things ahead.

Hold on, are you putting down Crabtown? Shame on you. SHAME. I'd rather talk to Crabtown than Time Out NY any day of the week.

Tom.

And now that I posted that I desperately want to hear it again. Does anyone remember which show PFT's Alyssa Milano groan was on? Much thanks.

I'm pretty sure it was in the May-June 2009 time frame. I think it might have been a show with an Jen Kirkman call too.

The name is off putting. I thought you were going to be talking about your favorite seafood dishes and recipes, or maybe the best method for cracking crab.

This is my favorite snippet from a really end-to-end fun interview.  (Kudz, Crabtown!)

Quote
But I think part of what makes this work the way it works is that I’m doing it because I want to do it. The second I start charging money, for my thing specifically, I have to do it. And then, all of a sudden, it’s like I gotta’ do the show. And it’s like, well, people are paying every week, they’re gonna’ want this from the show and that from the show. And then, all of a sudden, if I try to do a show where it’s like: “You know, I’m going to do something completely different,” and I’ve done shows like that, where it’s like: “I’m not in a good mood, so I’m going to act like a baby on the show this week.” If I did that with a pay formula, people would write in and say: “Hey, you’re there. You’re acting like a baby, I’m paying for this thing, and I don’t like it.” Now, all of a sudden, they have legitimate say in things, and then the show, all of a sudden, can’t grow because they say: “When I’m paying for the show, I want this, this, this, and this.” What if I decide: “Hey, I don’t want to do this anymore,” or “Hey, I want to try something else”? That’s the beauty of what doing it on WFMU is. It’s completely liberating. The show, ultimately, because I am not beholden to anybody, those three hours are what I want them to be, and I think that outweighs everything.

I completely understand this in the context of any ongoing creativity or project one might have.  Sure, it's healthy to occasionally conquer moments where one is forced out of his or her comfort zone. "It builds character."  Yeah yeah that, but it also seeds wisdom, and sometimes it's a turning point for the best.

So, what I'm wondering is... is this a curse?  Sometimes, I wish that "what I WANT to do" vs "what will MAKE ME $$$" aligned much better.  For example, why wasn't I born to really really enjoy being a bank executive?  or an evangelist?  Where were my board games as a kid which could have led me toward the "Hey, I want to be the CEO of a pharmaceutical company when I grow up!" path?  (No, Parchisi wasn't that game. Those were tokens, not tablets.)  Anyway, enough AynRandyRooneyism.  Fwd this Crabtown piece to your friends!

I like this interview. It asks questions that I have wondered about, and Tom gives thoughtful, straight answers. A+ to everyone involved!

Tom's first idea of a Best Show movie sounds an awful lot like the Prairie Home Companion movie...

Just tried to find the thread where there was discussion on the Evening w/Kevin Smith disks but gave up - this works too ... Tom gives a more balanced take on Kevin Smith here which is interesting to read, and so I'm teeing off on the Evening w/Kevin Smith disk here.

I think Reeleyes goes "I'll say it, I enjoyed the Prince and Jon Peters story" which I back up entirely ... these Evening disks (is he up to a 3rd one now?) encapsulate everything I like (not love) and hate about KS, which Tom kind of says more or less in so many words here in part 2.

My interpretation of him is: This is a guy who is basically a $30 million dollar check (let's just go with that number - I don't know if that's accurate and I don't want to look it up now) for the Weinsteins. He makes the same goddamn movie every time, and the same goddamn people go and see it, and his movies always turn more or less the same profit - the $30 million figure I"m basically pulling from a dim memory of reading it somewhere. So that's something. You don't have to knock 'em out of the park all the time, right?

If he's not sincere about this, then he's doing a really good imitation of a guy who knows he has limited talents but has found an audience, such as it is, and he is very greatful for that audience, and he tries to give them what they want.

So where like turns to hate is that he taxes the patience of even his most indulgent fans with these Evening w/things. Never mind the butt-aching marathon of sitting in the audience, even the disks need at least one more pass by an editor that isn't Kevin Smith-I know he edits his movies, but not sure he edits these. MY POINT IS STILL VALID!

So yeah, both those stories that Reeleyes is talking about are pretty awesome, but spread out with the snoochie boochie horseshit and the indulgent Kevin Smith nerdery, those get lost. Anyway. Scratchy record is almost done so I'm going.

Somebody give this the greenlight, please.
