I know there's a thread specifically about the marathon premiums, but I think there needs to be a catch-all thread for All Things Marathon, where we tell stories, share useful information, get outselves pumped up, and so on. So here we are.
The marathon starts this Monday, March 1st and goes on for two whole weeks; it all ends with the big Marathon Finale featuring the WFMU Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia on Sunday, March 14th.
The WFMU Marathon Central, with information about how, when, and why to pledge, can be found here:
http://www.wfmu.org/marathon/
- When and how are people tuning in?
- Anyone volunteering?
- Recommended shows?
- Best Show-related marathon talk
DO IT!
-
Tom and Terre phone rooms have been booked up for some time, so I'll be phone slaving for Benjamen Walker and DJ Rupture. I'm a little relieved because I'm so busy lately, but sad to be missing the party.
-
I'm answering phones on 3/2 for scratchy record and Tom ... call, why don't you?
-
The second week of the Marathon coincides with Spring Break. I'll be in the phone room on Monday and Tuesday evening.
-
The school I work at's Spring vacation (ie two weeks where I don't get paid) is always the week AFTER the marathon. It makes me sooo mad every year. I got phone skills!!!
-
What do we know about the Best Show marathon shows?
First week: Teddy Rockstar in the studio, FOT manning the phones (co-host: Hatch!)
Second week: Laurie! (co-host: Therese!)
Also:
Second Wednesday: 7 - 8 PM Nardwuar with Tom Scharpling
Second Saturday: 3 - 6 PM Terre T. with Tom Scharpling
-
I will also make sure to tune in to this:
Second Monday, 7 - 8 PM: DJ Rupture with Small Change
-
i'll be working late morning/early afternoon of the second saturday (3/13). don't be a stranger, call!!
-
How do people volunteer?

I am definitely pledging during Best Show but also during Night People. Tom got me hooked on them around New Year's and both shows are the highlights of my week.

Cool. If they still need help, I'm available at odd hours. Shot off an email.
-
I can't stop thinking about this DVD.
-
I'm so jealous of all of you working in the phone room. Wish I didn't live so far away! :( I'll be calling to pledge for sure though! :D :D
-
Sent in my first basic-level pledge during Liz Berg's show today, to kick things off. The rest will be pledged during The Best Show.

Coming through!

Seven Second Delay was great tonight. Ken gave Andy's cellphone number out over the air, hilarity ensued.

Excellent stuff. I hope he got my sext.
It's a real pity the show won't be archived. Really great fun. Though on a selfish note, I wanted to hear Andy laughing at my weak joke again...
Nardwuar and Tom is an intriguing combination at the moment. Plus they are talking about the forum at the moment.
-
If you aren't listening to Nardwuar's show right now, you just missed a momentous confession: Tom has acknowledged that he is, in fact, a spambot.
There's tons of Best Show talk during this show. It's being fun.
-
Boy, did Nardwuar do his homework. "Awefulsome"!
-
I really wish JW were around to do a Nardwuar impression, too, though.
-
In conclusion, congratulations, Martin.
-
Thank you.
It would've been great having both Tom and Jon doing Nardwuar impressions in the studio.
-
Up writing and listening to Wm. Berger. New experience, never heard that show before. I like it so far.
-
I normally wait for the SSD podcast. Looks like I blew it with this week's show.
-
Work has begun on full recaps of both Best Show Marathon shows under the following titles:
Week 1: Knee Deep in the Hoopla
Week 2: Top Chef
Namaste.

Looks like they put it up after all - I'm guessing with Andy's phone number bleeped.

Correct. What a great episode!

Very enjoyable. Tom's constant stream of pledge comments was hilarious, as was the sound of Andy's phone ringing off the hook in the background once the phone number had been given.
-
Also, Andy's ringtone turned out to be perfect.

This is always my favorite part. It was also funny how Andy kept acting the fool re: sexting. "What does that mean?!"

Tom and Nardwuar together, better than a Reese'sPeanutButterCup.

Guess who you have to thank for this?
ME!
NO KIDDING! I actually caught the show and edited it and sent it in just to be a nice guy.
YOU'RE WELCOME

Holy smokes!

It's even funnier with the bleeps. Nice work!

Listening to the marathon finale live from Maxwell's. The Hoof and Mouth madness is always very entertaining.
-
Congrats on winning again, Sweden.
-
Wait, what did we win? I missed that. Me or that other guy?
-
Is there another Martin from your town who listens to the station?
And, sorry, I don't remember what you won.
-
There was another guy from Sweden who pledged, thought it might've been him (his pledge note said "Tack så mycket, WFMU!", which Therese pronounced very well). My internet connection spazzed out for 20 mins, they must've read my pledge during that time. Anyway: cool.
-
It was an announcement of another prize winner, not just a thank you for a pledge. You're cleaning up, son!
-
Never won anything any previous years: seems I was due.
-
Well, I know you didn't pay anyone off; you'd have won the Monty Python boxed set if you had.
-
Exactly.

Are these archived? I wanna hear Tom sing.

Holy shit - Just got back from Maxwells. Completely insane. Tom was crazy good - for his finale he crowd surfed. I hope someone got pics.

Terre T killed it on "2+2=?"
-
Many highlights, among them: the nine-year-old DJ Icepack doing "Rebel Rebel", Gaylord Fields doing the barking version of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", Clay Pigeon's proper-singing-voice rendition of "Quando Quando Quando", Jason Sigal's strangely effective "Sultans of Swing", Keili's furious "Welcome to the Jungle", and Field Marshal Freedman's "Nothing Compares 2 (WFM)U", which was a great way to end the marathon. And, needless to say, the two tours de force by Terre and Tom.

These are pretty much the highlights I would pick along w/ Todd-o-phonic Todd's hilarious dj shout-outs on "My Pledge of Love." Keili was a revelation and Brian Turner completely pfwned Mark Knopfler on "Sultans of Swing." All in all maybe the best Hoof & Mouth night I've heard.
EDIT: Oh, and Bill Mac's Anthrax version of Bring Tha Noize. That Billy Jam can yell.

Agreed. Forgot about Todd, that was funny.
Billy Jam's Flavor Flav just belting out BRING THA NOIZE all over the place, both on and off mark, was very entertaining.

In between verses of "Nothing Compares to WFMU" Bill Mac came up and squirted tears on Ken's face.

Todd-O-Phonic Todd cracked me up. It was brilliant. Keili doing The Ting Tings into G&R was pretty inspired too.

The Wicked Lester cover was pretty outstanding. If Jon Wurster had gotten up there and sang as Gene Simmons, it would've been the best thing ever.

I'm listening now, and there was almost some Ted Leo talk. That would be an awesome interview.

Not sure where to put this question, so it's going here. Please redirect me if there's a better place to go.
I called in during the Best Show on week 2 and pledged on the phone, but have not received a pledge receipt (or whatever it's called) in the mail yet. I MUST fulfill my obligation!
Has anybody gotten their's yet? Am I jumping the gun?

You should've gotten the mail out by now, yeah. I don't think premiums have started shipping (I also don't think the DVD is done yet either).
I've been waiting for April to pay mine off - I also found out my company matches donations, which is purty nice!

You should definitely contact Joe McGasko on the WFMU home page.
-
Thanks, guys. I'll hit 'em up.
Did you volunteer at the phone bank, Christina? The girl who took my pledge was named Christina. That's why I ask...Christina.
UPDATE: I e-mailed Joe through the site and he replied with a couple of options. I went with paying online, went to the pledge page, and BING! BANG! BOP! Obligation fulfilled!
Thanks!

Yup, that was me! I think I'm in one of the photos over on Omar's recap.

Your money's no good in this town.

Awesome! You were probably too busy to remember:
Me: "...Sheffield Drive. 'Sheffield' like ---"
You: "Gary Sheffield?"
Me: "I was going to say, like the family on 'The Nanny'."
Oh, good times!
