Title: Networking FOT Style (AKA Add me on LinkedIn)
Post by: Keith Whitener on March 03, 2010, 03:31:19 AM
FOT's gotta stick together! So let's all help each other out in what little ways we can. I'm not sure how helpful LinkedIn is or can be, but I figure it's worth a shot.

I don't remember my LinkedIn login or password and so I can't even delete the damn thing.  I get constant requests and they're all just sitting there.

Yeah, me too (not braggin'). Though I do remember my password, I just can't bother. I get why some of my friends use it (tech people, software developers, educators, etc) - but why the hell should I?

Even as an IT guy who had to look for a job late last year and used the site, LinkedIn was only marginally useful.

What I dislike about it the most is that people can't really be themselves on it, they have to be their resume/CV selves, which is like some forced, miserable, formally dressed "I'll happily jump into your hamster wheel!" thing that reflects how little the cogs of employment practice have developed over the decades.

I just had to set up a profile there. As an online business card, it's great, but I don't see myself as going through the hassle of adding new business contacts and stuff.

I thought the aim was to add people for the purpose of advancing one's career.

I'm at it again! Jeeze, me, give it a rest! Seriously, though, I have no idea how people use this thing to "get ahead".
