Title: What are your favorite "fun" movies
Post by: Gilly on March 31, 2010, 10:06:04 PM
I'm looking for some fun movies to fill up my near empty Netflix Queue. Not that I don't want to think, but I'm looking for some escapism in movies right now, not something that will make me depressed... I've got enough of that in my life right now  :)

I'm upset that Netflix took away the friends ratings on movie pages. That was my source for filling up my queue...

but really, I watched Post Grad the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Life Aquatic
The Monty Python movies
Inglorious Basterds

edit: i re-read your post and the first and third mentions might borderline the 'depressing' at times but they will put a smile on your face I think.

I don't like it like I did in high school, but I think Almost Famous is the perfect thing to watch to lighten the mood.

I thought "Fantastic Mr. Fox" was pretty fun. Albeit slightly pretentious ... and a few melancholy moments here and there (it's a Wes Anderson film, after all) ... but pretty fun for the most part.

Yeah Fantastic Fox was a really fun movie from last year. Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call was pretty fun and wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be also.

I liked Fantastic Mr. Fox a lot as well. I received Princess and the Frog the same day and that was really bad. I don't think I've ever been bored with a Disney movie before I saw this. I've seen some bad Disney movies but they've never been boring.

I definitely will put Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call on my queue. I don't watch a lot of action movies because there isn't a middle ground with them. They're either awful or good so I wait until one gets recommended to me. I can watch awful comedies because you usually get a couple laughs, but there isn't a redeeming factor when it comes to bad action movies.

So far I think I've seen everything here except for Bad Lieutenant and Post Grad. Post Grad goes on the list as well despite it's 8% Rotten Tomato rating... It seems like something my wife might like and I always trust a FOT.

Teen Wolf (80's)
Billy Madison (90's)
The Incredibles (00's)

Those clearly aren't the best movies of their decades but probably the ones I personally watched the most.

I'd recommend Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again, the Sidney Poitier/Bill Cosby buddy comedies from the mid-70s.

Also, I don't know if you've seen Midnight Run, but that would also fit the bill, I think.

The In-Laws (Serpentine.)
Slap Shot (not a hockey fan so much but I love hockey movies)
Ben Hur (which I find hilarious)
Ishtar (do not let that pseudo-insider Hollywood talk about how it went way over budget scare you off-this is some comedy gold right here)

And for sheer ridiculousness, to the point where it kind of hurts:

Eagle Shooting Heroes

The Daytrippers

3 movies that have been on my mind lately:

Harvey - Jimmy Stewart's unfailing, almost-superhuman politeness and friendliness in this movie is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Good movie for easter time, also.

Zulu - I've been on a Michael Caine kick lately and I just watched this the other week. When I want big dumb escapism, this is a movie I frequently reach for. Just 2 hours of British dudes in a fort fending off wave after wave after wave of bloodthirsty Zulus - great for a lazy afternoon.

Cleopatra Jones - Shelley Winters' performance in this as "Mommy", a foulmouthed lesbian drug lord, is one of the great treasures of Western culture. Sooo, soo much fun.

I will also vigorously second the nominations of Raising Arizona, A Shot In The Dark, Idiocracy, and The Story Of Ricky.  Oh man, how on earth could I have forgetten The Story of Ricky.

I am also going through Newsradio on Netflix watch instantly. It has aged remarkably well.

For 'fun' movies, I have to say Hot Fuzz makes me so happy deep down in my soul. A great film even apart from the satirical elements that makes it a parody.

Corman's Bucket of Blood is really fun and still a relevant send up of 'hipster' (in this case, beatnik) culture.

On Hulu, there are two decent documentaries: Summer Camp! (which is about, you guessed it, a summer camp) and Billy the Kid (it's like freaks and geeks the documentary).

I recently watcehd Out of Sight, I thought that was a good/fun movie.

Billy The Kid is a phenomenal documentary, but I don't know if I'd use the term "fun" to describe my viewing experience, so much as "made me so uncomfortable that I felt sick to my stomach".

I will always love Evil Dead II for pure, unadulterated fun.

Army of Darkness is great too, but it seems to be going primarily for laughs, whereas Evil Dead II feels like it is just a preposterous horror movie...so preposterous you have to laugh.

YES! The Story of Ricky! Great pick AC!
Since you're a Minnesotan, I'm going to suggest MST3k for the blues -my favorite movie being Manos:The Hands of Fate. There are quite a few available right instant-view right now. I just watched The Final Sacrifice a few days ago. Time Chasers is another favorite.

These are all good suggestions. My definition of fun isn't just comedy, just stuff to sit back and enjoy... not even feel good, just stuff that doesn't try to emulate real life... escapism is what I'm shooting for.

I didn't mean to imply anything about Raimi's intentions.  I was simply saying that Evil Dead II feels like equal parts horror film and comedy.  Army of Darkness felt predominantly like a comedy.  But part of my opinion is affected by the fact that my first viewing of Evil Dead II took me totally by surprise. I had no idea it was going to be funny at all, and the resulting laughter and delight was huge.  With Army of Darkness, I went in with high expectations and so I was less impressed...even though I still enjoyed myself.

Yeah, I guess it does get pretty intense at moments but I think it leaves you with a very positive feeling. The world is a very serious place to this kid and he literally see his role in life as something from the countless 80s movies he grew up on. I love the terminator quotes and the karate kid inspired haircut.

But seriously. Someday I'll post my reasons why Robocop is one of my favorite films of all time. I'm a huge movie person, I love really well crafted films that are meaningful and deep and insightful. Robocop has all of that and is stone cold bad ass.

This list is a thing of beauty, Trox.

Oh! Another one!

Air Force One (which me and my pals dubbed President Kick Ass, and if you even mention Harrison Ford on, near, or around the Best Show, Tom will go "GET OFF MY PLANE!" in that gruff everyman-pushed-to-his-breaking-point voice that's the only thing Harrison Ford does. Srsly, when he laughs in a movie it looks like the muscles in his face have never held that position before. Unbelievable.)

You know how some directors will make a 'love letter' to their fans? Being asked back for Crank 2, this director decided to write a letter bomb. It shows such distain for it's own frat-boy, beat-em-up audience that it becomes transcendent. It has the main character on fire, kissing his girlfriend to the tune of REO Speedwagon. Fuckin' aye.

The Warriors. No other film has more deftly straddled the line between campy and badass. Try and get ahold of the original DVD release; supposedly the directors cut adds a bunch of comic book transitions that look stupid. (Yes, I am complaining about something that "looks stupid" in a movie featuring the Baseball Furies.)

I love The Warriors myself.  And yeah, the director's cut was just unnecessary.  The "comic book" cuts don't add anythng and look silly.  Also there's a new intro at the beginning that talks about Greek warriors or something.  Like, the movie wasn't absurd enough on it's own.

Detroit Metal City (NOT Detroit Rock City) Co-starring GENE SIMMONS as the evil metal overlord (I am not joking)!

I'm not sure if it's been released on dvd or not yet - and if you can't find it on Netflix, you can watch it here (in parts) for free.

Oh! It's also based on the Japanese manga of the same name.

Isn't Detroit Metal City the anime that had that insane "10 Rapes A Second" song?

I haven't seen the anime yet, but I've heard that song is in it. I think there's a joke about that song in the movie version...

I don't know how you can like a show that finds humor in rape. Are you a lowlife?

I'm joking. I also like DMC.

The Tao of Steve

I enjoyed this movie and thought that I may have imagined it since no one I know has ever heard of it.

I've seen it, too, so it is at least a folie à trois.

I would put Dazed and Confused on this list also.

I'm assuming you've seen both Bill & Ted movies, but if not, they belong here as well.

I hear they are remaking Bill & Ted. Wonder who'll play them. I hope it's Michael Madsen and Wilford Brimley.

Yeah! Those are great! I forgot to post Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle earlier. This post just reminded me.

Yes, he wrote the whole soundtrack, but he sings out the credits as they roll at the end. That's what I meant.

I don't know anything about this movie, but Frank Gorshin, Burgess Meredith, AND Caeser Romero together in a non-Batman movie? This I gotta see.

Shaw movies (Major Barbara, Pygmalion, Caesar and Cleopatra)

Just noticed that TCM is going to show these and The Devil's Disciple this Thursday night.  In case anyone's interested.

Although I truly can't endorse any of the people behind the production of it or say much good about most any of the "cast", Windy City Heat gives me a warm, funny, comfortable feeling every time I watch it. There are parts of it that still make me laugh nearly to tears, even though I've seen it many times.

Three Men and a Buble was pretty heartwarming too.
