Title: Who invented the punchline drum fill?
Post by: mackro on May 04, 2010, 07:54:34 PM
I tried Google and Straight Dope, and no dice.

I assume this started around the 40s or 50s, maybe sooner?

(sorry if this is a dumb/obvious question)

I don't know specifics, but I would assume it's a vaudeville thing. In which case, sooner.

I read somewhere that in the vaudeville days it would be played AFTER the audience applauded to signify a "win" (rather than as a "that's the punchline" kind of deal).
