Title: Six Degrees of Black Sabbath: Pantera to They Might Be Giants in 10 steps
Post by: Ojingeo on May 21, 2010, 05:00:18 AM
I found this awesome tool on the Musicbrainz blog { http://blog.musicbrainz.org/ }:

http://labs.echonest.com/SixDegrees/?start=pantera&end=they+might+be+giants (http://labs.echonest.com/SixDegrees/?start=pantera&end=they+might+be+giants)

I thought fellow FOTs might have some fun with this tool. The musicbrainz database is vast, so it should come up with pretty strange stuff!

Oh my, this is going to devour my life.

20 steps:

I'm really surprised that it takes 14 steps to get from Tommy Hall to Syd Barrett. Just as a comparison, Spike Jones to Burzum is 15.

Eric Davidson to Lobo - 21 steps
GG Allin to CW McCall - 20 steps
Jackie Gleason to GG Allin - 20 steps
The Bellamy Brothers to Pungent Stench - 21 steps

I spent an embarrassingly long time messing around with this last night; but the most I ever got was 24 steps: Aphex Twin to The White Stripes, strangely enough.

http://labs.echonest.com/SixDegrees/?start=aphex+twin&end=the+white+stripes

Insane Clown Posse gets close to just about everybody via Cab Calloway.

What's a better pastime than doing Six Degrees of Black Sabbath while listening to Best Show Archives? Nothing, I tells ya. Nothing!

Wait a second.  While connecting Mozart and ICP, one of the links read as follows:

"that created the track Spaz Out (feat. Q-Plex, Mozart, Sleep Murda & Babyface Fensta) that was performed by Mozart"

My longest one so far is Circus Lupus to The Monks in 13 steps:

All of my efforts seem to involve Pigface as an essential link in the chain.

Every time I attempt to connect Jandek to someone it tries to use "various artists" as though it were a legitimate link.

I'm done.

Strangely, it found a path from Stanley Holloway to Tom in eleven steps but couldn't find one to Jon Wurster.
