This has been one of my if not my favourite comic over the past several years - and the fact that it is on AMC makes me very happy.

First episode in October! I can't wait.

Official trailer out.

I thought people were tired of zombies. Oh well, I still like 'em.
I wonder how Andrew Lincoln's American accent will hold up. (I already know that Lennie James's is serviceable.)
-
Really excited about this. Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, there should be no reason why this isn't fantastic. Hopefully, Darabont goes more Shawshank and less The Mystic for the series.

Zombies were all over Thunk Tank, yesterday.
-
Rick's magically changing accent -- it goes from Australian to Texan to some weird Texas/England combo -- will drive me nuts.

Listening to it now. If I'd listened live and felt spunky, I'd have called to ask them if they'd ever read Colin Wilson's The Mind Parasites (a book I loved at age 12; don't know if I could stomach it now). I might also have mentioned how interesting it has been to see how the people behind the humans and zombies in the game Urban Dead behave.
-
I thought the first episode was really well done, and much like the comic didn't seem horror focused despite the subject matter. I didn't notice Ricks fluctuating accent as much as apparently many others did, but I'm sure if I'd focused on it would probably bug me.
Morgan and Duane were great. I hope they are featured in the series more then they were in the comic - or at least it's not 5+ years till we see them again.
-
Lincoln's accent is horrible.
-
are these fast zombies or slow?
-
More slow than fast. Apparently the director aimed never to have them go faster than that spry graveyard zombie at the beginning of Night of the Living Dead. Mostly they shamble.
-
are these fast zombies or slow?
They're sort of middle distance runners.
-
Lincoln's accent is horrible.
I'm sure upon rewatching it will bug me too, but I don't notice some of those things on the first go around. I do know that McNulty's wavering accent in the Wire became really bothersome and distracting at times, and mucked up some scenes and episodes of the show for me.
-
I expect I'll go the other way: now that I know it's bad, I can forget about it. It may improve, in any case; Hugh Laurie's did.
-
To answer the zombie speed question with what I can only assume will be the most useful and relatable comparison possible given the general interests of the board, if the Walking Dead was a modern sports video game, its zombies would have a low speed rating, but a high quickness rating. They have a decent first step and can close pretty quickly, but no motor. Terrible in the open field and man-to-man, but a formidable zone defense.
To put it into terms that would narrow down the audience to just Sarah and me, the Walking Dead zombies appear to come equipped with Lurching Gait, Scent Blood, Flailing Gesture, Feeding Groan and Neck Lurch. At least two of them in the pilot seem to have upgraded to have Memories of Life, as well.
Anyway, I really liked the pilot and hope the quality keeps up if it finds an audience. I've read a few of the collections, so I have/had some sense of where things are headed, but everything was kind of telegraphed anyway, specifically the looming interpersonal plot problem. Which is fine, since this worked on the strength of the atmosphere it created. The zombie genre is massively played out by now, but I will always be suckered in by well-filmed shots of someone riding into a city on horseback, carrying a bunch of guns, facing hordes of enemies with abandoned tanks and machine gun nests around them.
Despite having been warned about it, I wasn't bothered by the lead's accent once they got past the cop partner banter near the beginning, which was more of a case of just not being all that well written. My real problem with everything was the shot of crows eating the zombie army guy. If crows and other animals can get zombified or carry whatever makes the dead rise, wouldn't that be the ultimate no-win situation?
Zombirds: worse than fast zombies. Scientific fact.

Ha! Ever visit Lerwill Heights?
Did any of you watch Dead Set? I thought it was great fun. Haven't been made so tense by a zombie show for ages.
-
I enjoyed it. The stuff that wasn't in the comics was actually pretty cool and added to the story and character developement.
-
I know nothing about this comic book series, I stumbled onto a fan made show open for the new live action series. He used the comic book artwork for the visuals. I thought it was extremely well done. I have no idea how to embed vimeo on this board, here is the link.

I liked it! Sometimes when I watch Mad Men, there will be such a perfectly framed shot that I want a still photograph of that moment to hang on my wall. I think the most recent one was Betty lying on her daughter's bed while her kids are off in Disneyland with Don.
There were a lot of those shots in this episode.
And Jesus, Bicycle Girl was terribly depressing. :'(
-
Very cool pilot episode. It felt original too, which is remarkable considering that zombies have been done to death.
-
Overkill, you might say.
-
Thanks for clueing me into the show. Liked the first episode a lot. Some broad strokes on the characters in the 2nd episode but the suspense was well done.
I hope they using Teddy's "Whole lot of walking to do" over the closing credits at some point.
-
Not as pleased with episode 2, but what the hey.
-

Agreed. I'm still on board though.
The scene with the key? Come on.
-
Not to mention the painful predictability of handcuffed racist's return (I'm betting minus one hand).

Yeah, the spilling tool bag shot was a bit heavyhanded. Presumably the hacksaw fell somewhere he could reach it.

ditto.
also, the comment Wes posted re: zombies a la action video games has been forwarded by me to a few people. well done- as always.

That actually bugged me. This is a pretty sharp cop, abandoned cars are everywhere, and he chooses to ride a fucking horse into zombietown?! He knows they can't open doors.
He did look quite majestic in the saddle though.
-

Not car doors, anyway.

I think there was an issue with a lack of gasoline. Remember the first scene in the first episode?
-
Bah, he'd have been better off checking out abandoned vehicles on the way. Methinks Rick was aware of that majestic image he was projecting. Damn fool. Clearly, a man who hadn't watched as many zombie movies as I.

Why does it seem like no one who is IN a zombie movie has ever SEEN a zombie movie. They seem so clueless. As for myself, I don't limit my preparation for the coming zombie apocalypse to movies.

Jeepers creepers, this is a short season.
-
Wow, I hated this, and I liked Rubicon, so obviously AMC and I don't see eye to eye.
-
Kind of a bummer that this show is heading steadily downhill. Hispanic gang subplot was just not good.
-
The best part was Glenn's face when Darrell put his his brother's severed hand in his backpack.
As dumb as this faux-gang thing was, I did like the chihuahua reveal.
I like tiny dogs.

Look at dat nose on da one in da middle. BOOOOOOOOOP!
I did not like the psychic hole digging. Okay, okay, zombie epidemic? I can suspend my disbelief for that. Zombie epidemic AND psychic dreams? No, sir. No, sir, I do not buy it.
-
I want so much to like this show, but so far I'm having a hard time with that. At least now those boobs might stop camping out and get behind some walls. I'm guessing, too, that, with Amy dead, Andrea is finally going to start becoming the tough cookie she apparently is in the comic. I'm sick of all these wailing, helpless women. And other stereotypes.
-
I really couldn't get behind the concept of "We're going to chain you to this tree until we're sure you like us". Good idea. The best way to make friends is to chain people to trees with man eating zombies lurching about. I was waiting for the hole digger to to say "If you're afraid I might be violent now, leave me chained up for another 8 hours THEN let me go."
Also, it's a little hard to root for these people when they're sitting around in the dark having a weenie roast when 6 billion zombies are out to get them. I think a LITTLE paranoia is in order. Maybe a lookout is a good idea in case two dozen undead happen by?
-
I haven't seen the show yet, but I just read a few volumes of the comic. It's got to be the most depressing fucking comic book I've ever read. I want to read nothing but Tintin and Silver Age Superman comics for the next six months just to get over it.
-
Shoot, sounds like the perfect accompaniment to my current mood! I'd better get cracking.
-

I know exactly what your talking about. :-[ I think I've finally severed myself from that game, though.
I want to see someone shoot a zombie in the head with a flare gun.
-
My contact has been minimal for three years now, but I can't bring myself to admit I'm done with it. Hell, for a few minutes this summer, after I got the new computer, I thought I'd try to get back into it, but no dice. I do miss it, though. I want to go back to the days when I dreamt in green and black grids.
Did you ever run into the Ted Leo zombie when you were in Malton? I told Ted about its existence at the time, and he was amused.
Back on topic: I find that, despite everything, I'm looking forward to Sunday's episode.

I'm always looking forward to Sunday nights. I drive 30 miles to my friend's house to watch it. It's not perfect, but I kinda love it.
-
I just watched the first four episodes again at my in-laws house on thanksgiving and there is a clear drop off in quality after the Frank Darabont directed series premier. I still like it though. I've read the first few trades of the comic and though they're following the books closely on some things, they're going crazy off book on others. The new stuff is really interesting though. Episodes 3 and 4 are written by Kirkman himself so I can't complain about the differences. Still love the books better though.
-
I'm glad it's not a page for page adaptation. I've read through Book 4, and I'm not sure I'd want to watch a show where I knew what was going to happen in every scene of every episode.
At least it's not Night Of The Living Dead 3D (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489244/). That thing stunk.
-
I liked Sunday's episode. Uptick! Also I wrote this letter:
Dear survivors,
You might be able to use some of them abandoned tanks.
Love,
Bryan

After this first season, I don't think this show is for me. It's just too heartbreaking.
I have a question though. My wife thinks that the cop's wife and the cop's partner started their affair after the zombie apocalypse. I think the affair was going on before it. Who is right?

As usual, she is right. Thanks.

I quite liked this episode. But I wish this show had been canceled instead of Terriers.

Agreed. Terriers was awesome. I will be buying that DVD as soon as it hits the store shelves!

The finale was good but I really wanted it to end like the first trade did.

I was looking forward to Walking Dead like I haven't looked forward to a tv show in I can't remember how long. And it has been enjoyable - but yeah, Terriers was awesome, better, and I miss it already.
-
Specifically for Sarah.
But anyone can listen. http://www.thepsychfiles.com/2010/12/episode-138-zombies-6-reasons-why-are-we-so-fascinated-by-them/ (http://www.thepsychfiles.com/2010/12/episode-138-zombies-6-reasons-why-are-we-so-fascinated-by-them/)
The host drifts a bit but points to several interesting perspectives worth considering when thinking of undead.
Like I do too often.
-
Very thoughtful of you, F., but it's off the mark for me: I find zombies creepy but I also love and admire them and think they should rule the world. I don't want to kill them; I want to be them.

My Christmas wish is that you get what you want.
Bon appetit.
-
I'm touched and a little hurt at the same time.
-
I'm perturbed that so many critics I admire have put this show up there for best of 2010. I think they might be thinking of this show and seeing what they want the show to be, and not what it actually is.
-
Oh my!

can i bring this thread back? i love this show.
thoughts on the first episode of the season?
-
I can't decide if it works as right-wing survivalist fantasy, or a critique of right-wing survivalist fantasizing. Either way I hate watching it. My ladyfriend is watching it right now and I'm hiding in the corner with my headphones on Vance-style.
-
at any rate, i thought it was a good start to the 4th season. i'm ready to see what happened to four eyes who lost his lunch in the shower at the end.
-
I'm liking the lack of a human enemy (so far) in this season. Makes things more tense, I think, and sort of takes it back to season 1 when things were more mysterious and the characters didn't know what was going on. The Governor just got to cartoonishly villainous.
