Title: Dogtooth
Post by: Kim Kelly on June 09, 2010, 04:21:41 PM
Another one for the Depravity's Rainbow Film Club:

i was on board until they showed the guy approaching a cat with gardening shears. and maybe also the incest. yeah, that's weird.

but then they kind of drew me back in with that last line. i don't know!

I'm not sure Mike would like this. But then again, who knows.

It's best described as a Greek Fritzl-esque family drama shot in a distant/cold, sometimes annoyingly stylized way. Reminded me of Ulrich Seidl. The dark comedy elements of the story doesn't work AT ALL. And don't see it if you expect answers to the questions: What makes a man raise his kids in total solitude? Is he a psycho? Is he just a patriarch pushed to the extreme? In typical open-ended arthouse fashion it more or less completely avoids answering that.

You never see any harm being done to any cat. All that stuff is off screen. You do experience and see plenty of really unpleasant and realistically shot scenes through.

And there's some pretty graphic sex scenes aswell.

Lots of people love it. It was a festival favorite all through 2009. I say it's worth a look.

Wes Anderson meets Wes Craven? Wes should love this. It's a Wesfest!

This is the first I've heard of this.  It's not completely obvious what they were going for here, so that will probably prompt me to check it out.

Director's new film is "darker and funnier. It goes to each extreme a little bit more." (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/dogtooth_director_says_his_new_film_alps_will_be_darker_more_extreme_readyi/#)

I saw it. I loved it. I think it's one of my favorite movies of last year.

kinda reminded me a bit of funny games. especially the treatment of violence and the dark humor and the slightly surreal quality to it.

definitely not for everyone though. lot's of graphic sex and violence scattered throughout but it's really beautiful and often hilarious.

The dance sequence toward the end of the film is one of the most compelling moments in cinema of 2010. Really interesting movie. Funny, too, in a sick way.

I enjoyed the movie but it's one of those I would only recommend to a few people I know.  I bought a copy and shipped it to a friend.

I agree with David about the dance sequence; twisted and funny.

I was unfortunately underwhelmed by Dogtooth.  I had very high expectations.  It felt like a lot style that wanted to say something substantive but didn't deliver.  That said, I did find the scenes of the older sister reciting lines from Rocky and Jaws amusing.

I was constantly reminded of Bad Boy Bubby while watching this. Though this movie was far less depraved or satisfying.

Mike if you haven't seen BBB, shoot it to the top of your queue (if it is on Netflix ???) .
