Title: Turntable help
Post by: DanFromBrooklyn on June 26, 2010, 09:50:30 PM
Hey all,

I'm wondering if there are any FOT vinyl fans out there who might be able to offer me some tech support. I'm trying to hook up an Audio Technica AT-PL50 Belt Drive Turntable to my receiver, and even though my receiver (a Kenwood) has a phono input and the turntable's preamp is set to OFF, I'm still getting a terrible hum. (The turntable does not include grounding wires.) Anyone know what's going on and what I can do?

(I know I should probly take this sort of thing to some vinyl msg board somewhere, but I thought I'd try here first!)

Thanks,
Dan

If the receiver and turntable are on the same surge protector try switching one of them to a different one on a separate outlet if you can. Otherwise you could try switching to a different input and turning the preamp on and that should probably fix the issue.

Gilly, that (switching the input from phono to something else) worked! Thanks! Though I don't get why the phono input was what was giving me trouble...? Like, why have a phono input if it'll give you a hum?

I don't know... probably because the preamp built in causes issues even though it's off. It seems like a turntable for people who don't have a phono input and don't want an extra pre laying around. Good to hear that worked.
