Title: No Show Tonight 3/27/07.
Post by: Tom Scharpling on March 27, 2007, 12:31:02 PM
After my show last week I went to the ER. It turns out I have a kidney stone. I am still dealing with it a week later, waiting for it to pass. It hurts. The best approximation I can make is that it's like getting kicked in the crotch while on a shaky rowboat during a storm.

Tonight Bethany will be filling in.

Tom.

Feel better!

And be glad this is not the olden days of Deadwood season 2!  They dealt w/ these a little differently back then.

Be sure to keep it when it comes out.  Celebrity kidney stones can fetch quite a price. (http://www.undercover.com.au/news/2006/jan06/20060119_williamshatner.html)

"...phosphate-based soft drinks have been proposed as a contributor to kidney stones. A study in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology reviewed 1,009 male patients who both formed kidney stones and were consumers of a significant amount of soda to see what effect soda might have on stone recurrence. Those people who consumed phosphate-based sodas in the largest quantities had the highest rate of stone recurrence." (http://www.calciuminfo.com/calciumquestions/kidneystones.aspx)

I hope you feel better soon Tom. WFMU owes you (again) for taking in all that marathon soda.

If you hear your doctor use the words "sounding rod," you should probably run away.

Feel better, mister.

I feel so insensitive!  I sent tom an email about royalties and stuff and I should have been wishing him health and happiness.

The sudden sharp pain in his back!

Jillian Barberie and Tom S are having a rough go at it.

Get well soon.

I hope you feel better soon Tom.

Remember the sage words of King Solomon and Abraham Lincoln (? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Too_Shall_Pass_(Phrase))) regarding kidney stones:
"This too shall pass."

May I suggest not reading Neal Stephenson's Baroque Trilogy as you wait for your ordeal to pass?  Aside from the effect the graphic accounts of stone suffering and Restoration surgery may have on you, the book weighs several pounds, which I imagine would weigh heavily on your tormented trunk.

Less flippantly, good luck, and may your suffering end soon.

P.S.  Didn't Fred suggest it might be a kidney stone?

That's the look of excruciating relief he will have sometime in the next week when he passes it.

On the bright side, there is now a suitable topic for another uncomfortable phone interview with Todd Barry.
Hope you feel better soon, sir.

It happened to my brother, too. Ironically, he's an EMT. Godspeed -- to both you and that cursed little slowpoke crystal.

for a minute i thought about drawing a picture of what i thought your kidney stone might look like, and while looking around my desk for some paper i got Daniel Johnston's song "Funeral Home" in my head but to the words "Kidney Stone" so i wrote them down:

kidney stone, kidney stone
gonna pass me a kidney stone
got me a toilet shiny and white
gonna pass my stone 'cause i'm fighting the good fight!
kidney stone, kidney stone
gonna pass me a kidney stone
got me a toilet shiny and white
gonna pass my stone and i'm doin' it tonight!
kidney stone
kidney stone...

its not the greatest song, but its probably better than my drawing of a kidney shaped stone with a smily face on it.
get well soon!
