When did I go from hating Futurama to loving it?
-
Also, now that I've liked certain things for a while (music, stand up comedy, etc...) I like listening to something new and saying "hey, I think I hear a little bit of blank in there.
For example, I was listening to Aziz Ansari's set on the Invite Them Up CD and thought I heard some pretty strong Mitch Hedberg influences. That could be completely obvious or completely wrong; I don't know. But I like to think I do.

I think Zoidberg is one of the most sublime creations ever.

I love listening to Rushkoff. I really miss Media Squat. Found the Disinformation podcast the other day
I'm listening right this second.
Disinformation: The Podcast - Life Inc. with Douglas Rushkoff 1:08:23 7/31/09 This episode features an interview with author and media wizard Douglas Rushkoff. We discuss his new book, Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back
Also like this thread a great deal.

Hey, I like this thread.

That Rushkoff podcast was really interesting.

I think you're totally right about the Aziz/Hedberg comparison on Invite Them Up. It seems like Aziz has hit his stride since then.

And the projects are way fun. I've only had time to do two of them, but I hope to get through most of the book this year.

So true about Zoidberg. I'm resisting the urge to start quoting. You should all thank me. :)
I left Park Slope and moved to upstate NY last month. I'm liking the "country life" a great deal.

Good news, everyone!
I spent the 4 day weekend watching seasons of Futurama and before that, The Wire Season 1, and before that, Party Down.

double complete rainbows.
You should have been at the bar with me one afternoon few years ago, yesno: there was a complete triple rainbow. Just one of several celestial events I've enjoyed down there (others include a lunar eclipse and a display of northern lights; there was also an attempt to witness the transit of Venus early one morning that was thwarted by fog).
Lubeckers like drinking and staring up at the sky.

I hated The Darjeeling limited the first time I saw it, but I love it now. I can't explain why and I'm by no means a film guy, but I like it. And I got it for $7.99 at Target last night.

Me too. Not hate but I wasn't crazy about it. Now I find it really charming. I like how it feels like an 'in between' film but is still so good.

"An instrumental album is something I've been wanting to do for a long time," Dr. Dre told Vibe.com. 'I have the ideas for it. I want to call it 'The Planets.' I don't even know if I should be saying this, but fuck it. It's just my interpretation of what each planet sounds like." [...] He added: "I've been studying the planets and learning the personalities of each planet. I've been doing this for about two years now just in my spare time, so to speak. I wanna do it in surround sound. It'll have to be in surround sound for Saturn to work."
Best listening party ever?

This does sounds spectacular, but I should clarify that the irony/non-irony ratio of my interest is more like 80/20.

Yeah, it was nice to be reminded of that one. It's great. Does anyone have anything good to say about "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World?" I never got around to it, but I do (really, really) like all his other movies.

I couldn't finish it. It was pretty slow and light on laughs. Might have just been my mood at the time, but had expected something funnier.

- Carl Sagan saying that people "are made of star stuff."
- Butter cream frosting.
- Merry Clayton's voice cracking on "Gimme Shelter" followed by someone else in the studio going "Woo!" That is the way a studio recording (and rock in general) should be...heartfelt and rough around the edges.
- The scene in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" where Scatman Crothers - in a rage - tells one of the inmates to "Get out of here you crazy, slim motherfucker!"
- "Strychnine" by The Sonics.
- Front porches at night, summer, cicadas screaming.
- Matt Braunger's bit about prank calls.
- Opening credit music to the original "Taking of Pelham 1,2,3."
- "That'll do, pig." Cromwell as approving father figure. Makes me weep every time.
-
Videogum. The writing always makes me laugh when I'm having a bad day.

So, this guy is a genius. He takes breaks from the Ron and Fez show and then makes songs. They may not be as comical if you don't know the back storys (actually, none of them are so inside that you shouldn't laugh a little), but he's got this haunting voice and weird style.
http://radioghost.com/?page_id=29 (http://radioghost.com/?page_id=29)
Here are the one's you should start with if you care enough to listen:
It takes a rube (based on a comical bit where Fez overtipped an old waiter at a steakhouse, turned into an haunting song by adding a backstory to the waiter based on the story they told.)
Mighty Horse (based on an interview with Marc Ecko)
The Jay Mohr has a really great part at about 0:22 in.
The Christmas Song was written for a new Christmas Carol contest that Ron and Fez had. He blew them away by submitting it on about the second day.
The Battle of Big A and Fez may be my favorite
He also did a ton of twitter songs that were limited to 140 characters and were great.
-
ok, while I'm talking about the talented fans of the Ron and Fez show, there's another guy named Perrynoid that does radio himself and produces songs for the show. Sometimes his stuff is harder to find (it seems like he takes it down from his website when he starts getting bites on radio jobs.) I like all his stuff, but he's produced a set of autotuned songs that are particularly good that deal with Fez's issues lately (Fez started as an over the top effeminate personality for the radio and over the last couple of year he's come to grips with the fact that he's really got a "secret", an issue that he has been struggling with in real life, I guess. You never know what's a shoot and what's a work, but this seems very real.)

I've been listening to Seven Second Delay a lot lately, and I've really fallen in love with it. I stopped listening back when they started bringing audiences into the studio; the desperation kinda turned me off. I guess the plan worked, though, because now all the live shows are fun and interesting. Some of the studio shows have been classics, too - the "Prank Phone Call" episode made me laugh a lot. "Rate Your Ken and Andy Encounter" was another good one.
A fun rediscovery was finding out just how big a jerk Andy is; I had totally forgotten. He really is a perfect asshole, God love him.
-
He really is a perfect asshole, God love him.
There is no higher compliment.
-
I don't like the live shows much at all. Andy is at his best when he's backed into a corner with a failed concept, no phone calls, and no will to live. But he might have bailed on the whole thing by now if he didn't have the live shows to coast through, so hey, it's his show.
-
I've been really enjoying 7SD this year too. I don't know how the live shows rank in the grand scheme, but I can say attending them at UCB the last few months has been really really fun. Any time any FOTs are going on a Wednesday night, I'm game.
-
I'm sure the live ones are fun if you're there. I will say that there was one live show that ranked for me with the studio ones, and that was the one with Puppet Andy. It was funny even being unable to see it, and the flickr photos afterward made it funnier.
-
Hm, I might have to get back on the 7SD bus.

Media I'm currently loving:
-The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy
The book is great but I've found it hard to elaborate how awesome it is to other people because my explanations of "well, it's a secret history of the US politics" kind of make it sound kooky.
-Chris Claremont-era X-Men comics
I bought the second volume of Marvel Essentials X-men specifically to get the Dark Phoenix saga. At times, the writing really holds your hand with the story ("Cyclops was feeling sad", etc.). But the characters are so well defined and the way the issues flow together to form an ongoing story is great.
-Community Season 1 DVD
Man, that show is just really damn funny.

Brilliant! But there's more. Amazon is the gift that keeps on giving. Do yourself a favor and scroll down to the "Customers who viewed this item also viewed" section and check out the first item. If you click on that item and check out the first customer review, well....I almost fell on the floor. This probably tells a lot about what kind of person I am that a) I get it and b) I almost fell over laughing

If anyone gets a chance they should listen to the archive from November 23, 2004 around the 2:36:40 mark. A caller calls in using a regular voice when Tom answers as a fake call screener. Then we he gets on the air he uses a stupid voice. It's a really hilarious moments.

Tom's story about jury duty from Apr 24 2007 episode. I think I could recite it by heart.

The pick up game of bball I played this afternoon. Slowly getting my game back after a long hiatus from playing.
The Thai Food I ate for dinner, and listening to the "Podcasting" bit on this week's Best Show podcast in the car on the way to pick it up.
The girl I work with absolutely beaming this morning after being treated to an Elton John concert this week by a member of her school-based team.
Lots to like today. :D

The soothing and understanding way Office Tom says "Exactly."

I love that Tom is playing a Mr Airplane Man song on this archive show I'm listening to right now.

The way that Clay Pigeon says "And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, along comes Britny Fox!" completely free of irony.

I like Dave. Also, I could never have anticipated the deliciousness of combining white rice with some good quality PB + J. Who knows, maybe you'll decide to throw a little sweet chili sauce in there, too. That's on you.

This is completely awesome, but don't bother if you're uninterested in politics:

This is the dude who prank-called Wisconsin governor Scott Walker posing as a Koch brother. Here, he infiltrates the Republican campaign in the eastern-New-York congressional election that is widely viewed as a test case on Medicare privatization. Representative quote:
“Hi, sir, my name’s Steve and I’m a volunteer for the Jane Corwin campaign–”
“Jesus!” a guy screams at me. “You know, I was thinking about voting for Corwin, but this is too much! You people have called me a dozen times in the last two days! I am sick of it!”
“But Jane Corwin wants to rule over you with an iron fist,” I calmly relay. “Don’t you crave strong leadership?”
“What?!” he balks. “An ‘iron fist’?”
“Yes,” I assure him. “These phone calls are just the beginning. When Jane’s in Congress she will do everything in her power to crush you mentally and physically.”
“Don’t call me again!” he says and slams down the receiver.

Bwa-ha-ha-hahhh, I just found out this same guy runs this bogus website for the Republican candidate:

"Together, we can make delicious soup from the bones of the poor."
It's about time liberals had some good ratfuckers on our side.

I love you, electricity. Sweet, sweet, free electrons. I miss you so much. The way you lovingly created the alternating magnetic field in our well pump that let us experience the joy of showering and flushing toilets. The way that when you experience resistance you do your best to just keep on going. And you STILL took the time to fluoresc our filaments! I yearn for you. So does my toaster.

I LOVE the ending of the last episode of "The Walking Dead". I recorded it, and just got to watch it now. I'm still a little bit in shock. Also, I'm happy the whole "where's Sophie" arch is finally over. Most of the season has been disappointing, but the last couple episodes have been really good.

I checked out Broad City on youtube (after the SSD interview Wednesday) tonight and love it. It's hilarious and I never get tired of looking at Ilana Glazer.
