Title: Random Scharpling/Wurster References
Post by: Matthew_S on August 16, 2010, 10:32:54 AM
This comes up every so often so I thought there might be a thread already.  I didn't find one so, here one is.

Tom+Jon/TheBestShow are the subject of references, appearances, allusions in sometimes unusual or unexpected places. Feel free to share them here.

Here is a not-so-unexpected one.

This week's AV Talk at the AV Club discusses among other films, The Expendables.  If I remember correctly, they discuss a sequence in which Jason Statham beats up a basketball game.  They then mention Scharpling, Wurster and the Gorch as inspiration/reference for the sports team beat-up.

They were the subject of a question on Trivia Night in my local Brooklyn bar a couple months back. It was a round where you were supposed to identify the comedian based on a brief audio clip, and the final clip was Tom and Jon.  I know the quizmaster is a comedy writer and Best Show fan, so I wasn't too surprised, but I don't think any of the competing teams got it.

During the trailers for Scott Pilgrim last night, there was one for "It's Kind of a Funny Story" starring Zach Galifianakis. He says, "You're sweet to say that" in the trailer and that is definitely a Best Show-ism for me.

He also said "bird-dogging chicks" which I consider a Mike-Show-ism.

That movie looks like it could be pretty good.

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure "bird-dogging chicks" was planted most firmly in the lingua franca by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Oh right, I'd forgotten about that.  I no doubt laughed hard at that line when I first saw the movie, as I was about 11 years old, watching it with other kids at a slumber party.  [nice going, that kid's parents!]

That isn't to say 20 years later I don't giggle at the phrase "banging beaver", because I do, even if maybe I should know better.

I thought the same thing.

PFT plays a character called Jon Wurster in the Mr. Show siamese twin sketch.

Mr Show - Siamese Twins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEJFFFiSRDg#)

Was it another sketch?  In this one he's Keith Dunlaw.

In the AV Club today "...elite team of battle-hardened mercenaries so tough, one member—Statham—single-handedly beats up an entire basketball game in his free time."

"Jon Wurster from Marketing" - it's from a Mr Show sketch, maybe the siamese twins, but I don't remember (and I'm too lazy to check).

You're right - it's Tom Kenny who's Jon Wurster...

I'll put this here, for no good reason.  Perhaps because someone may have already mentioned it...

NPR is streaming tonight's Superchunk show

often these shows are archived for download, but not always.

This one certainly qualifies.

Sure, a list of the best comedies available on Netflix Instant is a great resource.

But, the fifth commenter brings it around to the BestShow.

"You forgot Clifford, the Martin Short classic. Tom Scharpling would be ashamed of you."

This one does not even fit, really.

There is no direct reference there, but the Pavement/Superchunk/MBV show is, I believe, the show where Tom + Jon first met.

I was watching Strangers with Candy, and in the episode where Chuck Noblet dreams of being a rockstar, this happens...

I love this episode and now I love that blackboard.

Good catch!
