Taking suggestions, PLEASE. I'm probably not fit to be meeting new people but need some short trips and excursions to keep my sanity. I'll have a wife and car to keep me company. We've both been there before, so no need to suggest the Space Needles and Experience Musics.
Examples:
- New Seattle Library
- Great book stores?
- $7 Mariners bleacher seats
Halp!
-
I've found that Mariners tickets on stubhub are CHEAP if you get them within 24 hours of game time. Couple times this year I've got $60 tickets for $18.
What part of town are you going to be in?
-
What's the big one? Elliot Bay Books? Definitely worth it.

Was looking at tickets perhaps, since the bleachers are as low as $7. We'll be up north near UW.

Can't believe I might not have been here before. Will repent for my sins of omission.

Elliot Bay Books moved to Capitol Hill, Pike/Pine neighborhood. It's not as cool as the old location in Pioneer Square but it's still pretty cool. Around the corner is my favorite cheap asian place, Ballet. I always get mock chicken curry (it's vegetarian).
The Frye Art Museum on First Hill is free and even has free parking.
The Ballard Ave area is pretty cool. There's a really great Mexican place called Senor Moose Cafe there. They have unusual regional Mexican food I've never seen anywhere else.
If you haven't been before check out the Pike Place Market. It's actually really fun.
Just north of UW there's a nice medium-sized book store called Third Place Books (Ravenna). My favorite pub is in the basement.
If you like comics you'll definitely want to go the Fantagraphics store in Georgetown. There's some great food down in Georgetown too.
If you just want to relax and kill time take the ferry over to Bainbridge Island and walk around Winslow Way.
Sorry for my rambling Larry King style here. If there's anything you're into let me know. My areas of expertise include botanical gardens, vegetarian restaurants, and guitar stores.
-
Isn't Andy Garcia in that?
-
Thanks! Great suggestions. We have a friend who works at the Frye so we'll certainly go by there at least once. I had no clue that Fantagraphics had a store, and if that means that I can get another episode of Thrizzled, my trip will be saved.
Rambling welcomed. All three of these specialties are in the middle of the venn diagram.

Downstairs there's a very good record store.

The library downtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Central_Library) is worth a visit. Interesting architecture. I dig Olympic Sculpture Park (http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/osp/) too.
And Elliott Bay is great. I did not know they moved though. I loved the old creaky wood floor of the old location.
-
Is Twice Sold Tales still there?

Yeah, it's really sad. That old store was dreamy. It was no Powell's but you couldn't beat it for well-worn style.

Not the old store on Capitol Hill. It got torn down to make way for the subway stop.

OK, you asked for it!
by neighborhood, roughly north to south:
BALLARD
Ballard Ave shopping. fun for ladies.
Senor Moose Cafe (mainly for breakfast/brunch food. I always get huevos divorciados)
Ballard Locks - nice gardens too
Dutch Bike Co (actual dutch bikes). cool people. test drive a bakfiets.
UW/RAVENNA
Ravenna/Cowen Park - pretty walk along a creek.
Araya - vegan Thai food
Hillside Quickies - vegan soul food. super greasy in a good way
Trading Musician - pretty good guitar store
Third Place Books Ravenna - nice little bookstore, great pub in basement
Center for Urban Horticulture - terrific garden, small, nice walk in some grasslands. short trip.
CAPITOL HILL
Washington Park Arboretum - large, lotsa trees, pretty. free
Interlaken Drive - winding street. pretty drive.
Cafe Flora - alright vegetarian restaurant. maybe past its prime. slightly fancy
Volunteer Park Conservatory - super little greenhouse. free. dahlia gardens right there too.
Remedy Teas - veg sandwiches and snacks. Fun if you like tea.
PIKE/PINE
Elliot Bay Book Company
Ballet - cheap asian with veg options. I'm a regular. I always get mock chicken curry.
Cal Anderson Park - nice little walk around an urban park
general hipster scene
DOWNTOWN/PIKE PLACE MARKET
Shorty's - pinball. you can get a beer and a veggie chili cheese dog. If Tom lived in Seattle I bet he'd hang out here.
Xanadu Comics
White Horse pub in the market - hard to find. tiny tiny tiny english-style pub. Open after 4 or 5pm I think
PIONEER SQUARE
Emerald City Guitars - nice guitar shop. Cool people.
GEORGETOWN
Fantagraphics Store - must-see for comics-lovers
Georgetown Liquor Club - good god I love this place. It's a dive bar with all vegetarian food. I always get the french dip sandwich.
WEST SEATTLE
drive out to Alki beach and pretend you're in California
----
If the weather's nice it's fun to rent bikes somewhere and bike along the Burke-Gilman trail. Renting a canoe at UW and paddling around Union Bay is fun too.

Visit Bruce Lee's Grave.
Get some Eggs Benedict @ Coastal Kitchen
James Turrell room @ Henry Art Museum
Play old school video games @ Shorty's
If you haven't been exposed to much nature in awhile (or ever), it might be worth taking a ride out to Mt. Ranier. It was amazing.
I would also suggest making a audio loop of "Spare change? Spare Change?" to listen to beforehand to get yourself acclimated to the sounds of Downtown/ Capitol Hill & U District. Seriously, the frigging squatter punx are numerous and quite aggressive/rude from my experience.

Take the tour underground!

I know I mentioned this the last time someone asked about visiting Seattle, but it bears repeating. If you hit up the Pike Place Market, make sure you stop at Piroshky Piroshky. It is delicious.
If you head up to West Seattle I also highly recommend Circa (basically at the cross streets of California and Admiral). They're my favorite breakfast place around here.
Also worth checking out is Central Cinema, which is sort of in the Capitol Hill neighborhood-- they're an awesome indie movie theater/bar hybrid. Tickets are super-cheap, the food is tasty, and they're always showing pretty cool stuff. The Everything Is Terrible dudes are going to be there tomorrow night for a special showing of their new DVD.

I'm with you on Piroshky Piroshky.
Oh yeah, Bumbershoot is this weekend too. For me it's always been complete fucking nightmare, but some people like it. Last time I went I waited (2006?) in line for 90 minutes to see Eugene Mirman, and 10 minutes before his set started they let people in from the end of the line, and I didn't get in. So I waited another hour to see Demitri Martin. Turns out Demitri Martin isn't that funny after you've been waiting for two and a half hours. Bumbershoot's a blast if your time is completely worthless.
Patton Oswalt is doing all three nights, so I'm tempted anyway.
I forgot to mention it before: Sonic Boom in Ballard is a pretty good record store.
-
i feel like a bum for missing this thread the first time.
I'd add Fremont to all of the above too. Main things there:
* Theo Chocolate factory tour. Hopefully you like and aren't allergic to chocolate. If neither, DO THE FACTORY TOUR! It's around $7 each(?) but it more than pays for itself in the best durn truffles you'll ever be offered. There's tons of chocolate products there too.
* The Fremont Troll
* Jive Time Records
* The Antique Mall, which has an extension of Jive Time, other record resellers, and a whole bunch of thrift/antique stuff
* Nectar / The High Dive : occasionally great live venues
* The Fremont canal walk along the Burke-Gilman trail.
* The Lenin Statue
* Tawon Thai near the downtown Fremont bus stop is very good thai
(EDIT: * DUH. I forgot Paseo up the hill in North Fremont. One of the best sandwiches you'll ever have.)
Not sure if you want to go events at all, but here goes:
Bumbershoot is happening this weekend. I started a thread on that here already. Keep in mind that economy tickets will let you into the Comedy stages. But it will be very crowded. So if you want to avoid crowds, avoid Bumbershoot. There's no way around that.
And there's Penny Arcade Expo happening this weekend too. I think that's sold out too, though.
Pavement is playing the Paramount Theater on Sunday.
Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament are playing the WaMu(?) Theater tonight.

OK one more crucial and kinda risky thing on the food tip...
THAI TOM
It's simply the best Thai place in the U.S... I've been to many. Thai Tom wins.
It's in this tiny hole in the wall off the Ave in the U District... south of 47th(?) St. NE on the west side. Right across from Cellophane Squared - another record store. They have a small menu, but what they do with that menu is miraculous.
Get seats by the booth near the cook. The flames will erupt by the range. DO NOT UNDERRATE THE SPICE RATING. A one-star at Thai Tom is like 3 stars anywhere else. So you're gonna have to like spice. They serve your dish in a bed of rice in these amazing giant ceramic leaf bowls.
On top of that, the food is cheaply priced.
So the risky part: there have been reports of cockroaches there by some people. I've been there many times, have even tried to look for them, but have not seen them. Hopefully they clean start and end of day, as they haven't been shut down by authorities ever.
Also, they take cash only.
But I mean:
EDIT: ok I looked and they apparently have been shut down a few times. Like I said, you need to be brave but you will certainly be rewarded.

Oh yeah, DURHEY! Ted Leo + Rx plays the Vera Project (all ages) on Wednesday September 8! don't think the show is sold out yet.
