Title: Worst MySpace bands, with a twist
Post by: Susannah on April 03, 2007, 02:35:07 PM
This is my first post on Friends of Tom!

I recently got asked out by a guy who is in what might be a serious contender for the worst MySpace band ever.  The guy, while nice and attractive otherwise, is in a terrible fratty jam band that claims "heavies like Phish and Umphrey's McGee" as main influences.

The sad thing is, I kind of liked him until he gave me a free copy of their new album. It was the kind of thing where I *knew* it was going to be terrible just by looking at the album art and even the font/typeface of the tracklisting. Finding their MySpace page confirmed my worst suspicions.

So my question is: would you go out with someone even if he/she was in a terrible band?  Especially if it was the genre of music you hated the most?  Or would you just try to ignore it and give the person the benefit of the doubt?

Dump the phishmonger and shoot me a .jpg.  Thanks.  Oh, and Welcome to Newbridge!

I'm going to be the one to say what everyone is thinking - can we have a link to the MySpace?

I have a question, two actually: Is it a two-name band, and are the initials DS?

If you're only going to answer one question answer mine because I asked first.

Well, it would answer my question. And I wouldn't mind, because I those guys were pretty dickish when I went to see Matty Pop Chart and Kimya Dawson play."

"Wah wah wah, I only had three hours of sleep, wah wah wah, let's fuck up the playing order because I'm a wet hen and want to go to sleep and couldn't care less about talented singer/songwriters who aren't shitty local bands." The drummer/lead singer kept bitching at his band mates. Boooooooo-ring.

Also, after looking at their stupid myspace page, it is now apparent that they are a three-word band. DHS are the initials, and they are wet hens.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say with 100% certainty that they are not the same band.

I feel kind of bad...but not too bad:

"Ride the vibe?"

Now that I see that she's from Roy Zeigler's hometown, it is apparent that I am an idiot.

Also, ooh boy. That's even worse than these guys (http://www.myspace.com/thedownhomesouthernaires).

My bad advice: You can do better. Trust me. Run away. Actually, hey, that's pretty good advice. Follow it.

Plus, any guy who you're already referring to as having one of the worst bands on myspace... the scales are already vastly against him.  You can't date this dude out of pity, you will only end up breaking his heart and harshing his vibe.

is it Richie, Tim, TJ or Ethan?

Disclosing which Viber it is would be a little too much, even for me.

I thank you all for your good advice and feel validated--my instinctive reaction was that I couldn't possibly go through with it. Most of my friends (girls who don't really like or care about music, etc.) think I'm being shallow.

Has this happened to anyone before? Getting involved with someone who has what you think is terrible taste is one thing--you can live with that. But when he/she is so invested in the production of something you think is awful...yeesh.

Spot on, kiddo.  You can hate something someone likes, but you can't despise what they do and hope for a happy ending.

ok, from the description above I'm going to narrow it down to either Richie or Tim.  anyone else able to deductively (is that the correct word?) figure it out with the other info she gave?

Also, one other piece of info I need for my plan to reach fruition: is Susannah your real name?

Richie, Tim, TJ and Ethan.

I'll say TJ is definitely out based on any criteria you care to mention.
Ethan's cheeks may have won him many a pinch at family gatherings but his gnomish looks are nowhere near sufficient to make a girl think twice about overlooking the Stranger's Vibe factor.
So I'm in agreement with CPM, it's either Richie or Tim and I'm putting my money on Tim. He has a few inches on Richie and he's taller too (I thank you). Richie is too clean cut and plain whereas Tim has that ever-popular effortless indie rock look.

Yes, Susannah is my real name.  What plan?!  My heart belongs to Philly Boy Roy and Philly Boy Roy alone.

You know, Tim is pretty cute. Try making him a mix tape or CD with good music. Make sure you give the mix a catchy name. May I suggest, "Dear God, Please Afflict Trey Anastasio with Leprosy and Vocal Cord Polyps, So As to Cause His Fingers to Rot Off and Totally Fuck Up His Singing Voice."

Definitely Tim.  I'm starting to agree with Laurie.  Here's what I would do (and Susannah, I hope you're still reading, under an anonymous guise): gradually ween the guy away from these jams.  Like, okay, allow yourself to include on this mix a bridge made out of kinda-lame-but-not-outrageously-bad stuff, like "Box of Rain" off American Beauty, or anything off the 1st Moby Grape album.  Maybe some Blue Oyster Cult, then throw in some Pink Fairies, some Love, maybe Captain Beefheart.  You're not gonna get this guy to come off Phish cold turkey.  Best to just slowly ween him away. Also, try the more psyched out, Satanic Majesties era Rolling Stones.  Some contemporary indie-jam-potheads like Brightblack Morning Light could work out pretty good too.  Let's not forget Polvo, the Rush of indie rock, as that one guy said on the other thread (sorry I forgot your name). Also, Tortoise and the Sea and Cake could maybe have legs with tokin' groovesters.

By the way, y'all know this guy's going to google his band name and find this thread, right?

Why not just start it off with Bryce singing "Sugar Magnolia", or "SM" (the real "SM" not that fake "SM" aka Stephen Malkmus), from Sept. 26, 2006?

Is it the guy on the left who might also be in television's The Black Donnellys?

I've been on the other end of it. I had a girlfriend that I ended up living with for a year, and one of the last times I saw her, about a week before I had moved my stuff out (still under the illusion that we weren't going to break up), she announced in response to a particularly obnoxious deejay on the radio who was making horrible jokes about Hurricane Katrina (which was going on at the time), "You know, I always thought that deejays were absolutely pointless."

I'm a deejay. Talk about a newsflash....

After you've lived with someone for a few years, everything they care about and believe in starts to seem ridiculous. When you finally confront them about it, you find out they feel the same way about you. Then you get on with having fun together. Unless that person liked The Virgin Suicides.

Hey, I liked The Virgin Suicides! The book AND the movie.

Does this mean you're breaking up with me?

We can be adults about this. I just need some me-time. You'll always have a toothbrush here. As long as you can listen to Tom's Yakov Smirnoff impression without dumping me, we'll probably have a future.

I hate to digress here but isn't it funny how you can often tell a band is horrible just by the artwork/typeface on their CD? It seems totally shallow, i.e. judging a book by it's cover, but I think it generally holds true that if band has no aesthetic value to their packing they probably have no aesthetic value to their music. I'm not saying every schmuck with a guitar should also be a graphic designer but you'd think these guys would have at least seen other album before and taken some cues from that.

We should start a thread on the best album artwork:worst album ratio.

What can we do to attract more female posters and/or gays?

I think she got sent into a shame spiral and is now totally afraid of the FOT.  We pressured her into revealing the secret identity of the guy's band.  Maybe she actually decided to go out with him.  Maybe she got scared he would find the thread.  Maybe she was uncomfortable with our ability to decode which bandmember he was and was ascared of stalkings.
This is a particularly telling quote: "Yes, Susannah is my real name.  What plan?!"

I can't for the life of me figure out how we could attract more ladies.  Or gays.  But I guess the What What video is a start (??)

Hey, remember Laura from Friendster?  I think she posted on the forum like twice and then got scared away.  I wasn't a big fan of hers though.
