Looks like TBS is on the FMU schedule starting in October; still at Tuesdays 9p Eastern. Tom, we knew you couldn't leave.

Damn it all. I was hoping it would go back to 8-11.
-
Yeah, same here. I liked being able to catch a portion of the show live (7p-8p CT) in Chicago.
I hope my "Tom, we knew you couldn't leave" comment didn't sound too demanding or rude. It should have read something closer to "Tom, thank you for staying on 'The Best Show' and entering your 11th year of stellar, unparalleled entertainment."
-
YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
TOM IS COMING BACK!!!!!!!!!
uh, always knew he'd be back, /cough/...../whistling walking away/
-
Never a doubt in my head.
Missin u Night People.
-
Ultra sad Night People has been booted. The show has really hit it's stride over the summer. Changing them to three hours was the best decision. Changing them to zero hours was the worst.
Glad the Best Show will be back, but I'm gonna' miss the second best show.
-
So happy to see Joe Belock back on the regular schedule.
-
9-12 works for me. No more of me at cub scout den meetings looking at my watch and blurting out "CAN WE WRAP IT UP PLEASE?"

This is why I can't have kids. That would always be my reaction, Tuesday or ANY night.
-
My kid is normally in bed by 8:15, and I spend most of the Best Show cleaning up the kitchen from dinner, washing baby bottles for the next day, and making baby food.
This is my life. This is what I have become.
-
I don't think this necessarily means Mr. Scharpling is coming back. But my doubts may be gone after tonight's broadcast.
I wouldn't mind if Mr. Scharpling's break continued. Chances are that he'll work on something non-Best Show related, and when that comes to fruition he'll drop it on our heads and we'll be amazed. (Heck, I'm amazed he worked as a writer for a popular TV show and he did the Best Show for so long. Mere mortals like you and I would break at a work load like that.)

I think this is what Chuck D. meant when he said "Welcome to the Terrordome."

To those responsible for the removal of Night People from the forthcoming WFMU schedule, I say: Boo! Hiss!
To those responsible for the reinstatement of the Best Show to the forthcoming WFMU schedule, I say: Hooray! Huzzah!
I have no idea why I'm talking like this.

My life, too. I could pop it on the radio while I work, but this is also generally the only time I have to speak to my girlfriend without kids running around demanding our attention. This is why I love the podcast!

I love Therese and Mike but I am more concerned the longer this sabbatical drags on.

I concur. My thinking is that the Matador thing in Vegas was this past weekend, so it would be a lot to expect him to do the show tonight. If this drags into a 5th week, though, I'm going to officially cross the line into dismay.
-
I say be happy Tom is taking a nice, long break. A person sometimes needs time to replenish his juice, whether in a Stevie Blue or an onion monster sense. And it would be entirely ridiculous for him to do a show tonight. Christ, in his shoes, I'd need a few weeks to recover from my few weeks off.

Yep.
Also, do you really want to hear a show hosted by a guy who really isn't into it? And I don't mean a "Mike, can you go get Pangaea?" level of unwillingness either; I mean a guy sagging under the weight of 3 hours' worth of "TOM YOU CANT LEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAVVVVEEEEEEEEE! What'll happen to MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?" phone calls.

I think everybody who called in was just trying to be nice, but put them all together and it made for one boring downer of a show.
-
Also, I don't know if anyone watched any of the Jon & Tom clips from the Matador thing, but Tom's voice was pretty shot. I don't know if this is from overuse during the Matador weekend or some sort of cold, but in either case I'd imagine he'll need at least a few days for his voice to recover.
-
Agreed with Sarah and Christina.
Also, Depravity's Rainbow needs another shot so it's at parity with Man & Wackiman. FITE!
-
Tom responded to a question regarding the future of The Best Show in that Yowie chat the other day. He said that the odds of him returning are 2 to 1, but he declined to indicate whether that was for or against a return to the throne.
The Yowie chat also featured "Samir from Florida" and a Wally-free Z-Man live via webcams.
-
I'm feeling bad about the head-butt I gave him in his left kidney.
-
I saw Samir. He's looking so grown-up! I think it's the beard.
-
I think that even if Tom leaves permanently he should return to do a series of farewell shows. It wouldn't be good for TBS legacy to have him drop the show in an acrimonious state, and I think the fans at least deserve that. (And maybe that's what his ambiguous 2:1 comment was about.)

This whole hiatus has been planned. Gonerfest hosted by Tom and Cherry Blossom Clinic's Terre T, Matador 21, and I think we can agree the Jersey Kid is too professional just to disappear after they announce the new schedule.
-
I saw Samir. He's looking so grown-up! I think it's the beard.
I reported him to Homeland Securities.
-
Wait, whaaaat? I had no idea there were actual rumors Tom was walking away from TBS. I thought he was just taking time off to rest and put in some extra hours over at Consolidated Cardboard during the X-Mas rush.
-

You, sir, are a true patriot actor.
He keeps pretending he's British.
-
Every week Tom takes off, the more excited I get for the return. Tom often talks about the Best Show continuing on in his head, non-stop throughout the week, right? By now, he's probably trembling with all the pent-up comedy. He's probably got bulging comedy veins at his temples and along his neck. There are probably sweat droplets of hilarity beading on his forehead right now, which he will soon dab at with an equally hilarious hanky.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tom comes back with a 6 hour extravaganza, complete with stuff that doesn't even work on the radio, like fireworks and lasers, tons of guests, and stuff I can't even imagine because I'm not Tom.

Yes. They give each customer a bag of those Dum Dum Pops on every visit. Cream Soda only, though.

Tom sang with Fucked Up early Saturday morning and lost his voice.

I like that! Has a sort of Leonard Cohen/Creedence vibe going on. He should start a band!

I think he may have Jason Sudeikis dancing in the studio off mic.

I apologize for my showing last night. I was tired, but hadn't called in a while, felt left out, called, and had nothing to offer.
My apologies all around.

I think Tom had all these things planned for the end of summer. I also read he is preparing a new show for Comedy Central with Paul F. Tompkins. He probably knew he needed to take a month off to host kick ass festivals and try to get a tv show greenlit. So his last show beforehand he acted pissed and said he should quit, so everyone would worry each week he didn't come back. That is why the show is so great. He has the audience in the palm of his hand.

Oh no! I haven't heard about it in a month or so, last I heard it was still in the works. What a bummer. It would have been great. Tom should call Paul's distant relative Matthew Tompkins from ABC and see if they can get a show on Thursday opposite 30 Rock.

Oh man, that video of Tom and Fucked Up makes me really happy.
I was at the show, I am not responsible for the video, though. This happened between 2 and 3 in the morning, I was so glad I stayed up for the Fucked Up/Ted Leo battle. I'm in my late 20's and it ranks in the top 10 greatest live performances I have ever seen. Later Wurster came and sang with Ted Leo.

Uh. I might be a sap, but this strikes me as a little mean-spirited. I don't know what's going on with Tom, but I'm not sure I see why, if he knew he needed to take some time off to take care of other commitments, he couldn't have just said as much: "Hey, have fun with Therese and Mike and Wally and Hatch; I WILL be back." Even if he does know he has the audience in the palm of his hand, why the assumption that he enjoys exploiting our loyalty?

This is all very conspiracy theory-ish for the sake of wish-fulfillment. TBS is up-in-the-air and I think Mr. Scharpling was genuinely venting the last two shows. He probably wants to do something like create and run a TV show or write a movie more than host a radio show, no matter how beloved it is. If I was in his shoes I'd probably feel the same way.
-
[ If I was in his shoes I'd probably feel the same way.
If I were in his shoes, even with his talent and creativity, I never would have lasted doing 10 years of TBSOWFMU, on top of a demanding job (based mostly on West Coast) and tons of other interests.
I think we should look to the finale of the Sopranos for comfort--you know, let's focus on the good times we had. And don't stop believing.

That would be weird. Comedy Central not doing a good show in favor of doing a bad show.

I finally listened to the Walking with Michelle epi with Tom, and he was talking about something he's possibly doing for Adult Swim, and a movie script he and Wurster are finishing or have finished that FOX had originally bought. Have these things fallen through?
