Title: Fredricks at GonerFest
Post by: scratchbomb on September 27, 2010, 07:39:44 PM
A Miss Jillian Barberie asked me to post these pics: New Port Richie's own Fredricks taking the stage at GonerFest with the Armitage Shanks. Punk rock!

I love that Fredericks apparently has a bowl cut.

As do I!

Stop this charade.

I was home tending the garden.  The okra is crazy this year.

Mmmm, Okra.  It's been great at the Green Market up here too. I've been making a curry and a gumbo with it every week. What's your favorite okra preparation, Fredericks?

Pretty sure that's Power Pop Pop-Pop.

I really thought he was going to look more like a chain-smoking Gallagher.  And not so much like a blurry Moe Howard.

This is how my mind's eye has always imagined Fredericks, and that picture has done nothing to change that.

Is that the same Beatle Bob that I saw at shows in St. Louis 15-20 years ago? Good for him. It's better to burn out than to fade away.

There's another awesome thing about the South. They are bonkers for okra!

While the bowl cut echoes Beatle's hairstyle, I can't imagine him being onstage in an untucked shirt. He's usually in more full dance jacket attire, esp. for a festival.

Wait, don't tell me, I don't even know why I asked.  Pickled, so it'll keep for years in a post-apocalypse bunker, right?

You don't have to pickle it if you stew up tomokra and can it.

I saw BB at a Cardinals game a couple weeks ago. (This IS NOT a brag--that guy seriously chaps my ass.)

He's still rail-thin. That ain't him.

i feel like those pictures have a story. a story we are not being told

Here's the story, as related to me in Tweet form by Jillian Barberie herself:

Fredericks was hanging out with Armitage Shanks. He wanted to know if he could join them onstage. Dick Slum, the Shanks' frontman, agreed, as long as Fredericks adhered to the band dress code - a white dress shirt and black tie. Later, Armitage Shanks were halfway through their set when Fredericks jumped onstage wearing a tuxedo shirt and black bow tie. Dick explained the situation to the audience and invited Fredericks to say a few words. He approached the microphone, yelled "I LOVE PUNK ROCK!" and jumped offstage.

I was there. I saw it go down. I had no idea that was Fredericks.

That story is nearly correct.

I told Dick I had brought a shirt like his on the trip.  He said he was preforming the next night and if I had a black tie he wanted me to join them on stage.  I told him my shirt had ruffles he said, "Well, then, you must wear a bow-tie."   I tried the Goodwill to no avail.  Had breakfast and figured fate was against it.  Then quite synchronistically,  After missing one of many turns, I found myself turning around in the parking lot of a formal wear place.   Ten dollars later, I owned my first bow-tie.   I paid five times as much for the tie as the shirt.

About halfway through the show,  some Japanese thug pushed me over onto the stage.  I reached out to Jillian to assist me.  She took two steps backward and forcefully motioned toward the stage.  I obeyed.  I had no idea Dick was going to offer me the mic.  Uncharacteristically, I said exactly what I was thinking at that moment.

I had heard of the Shanks before but didn't know their music until this weekend.  Wow!

They remind of when I was a teenager.

I stayed at the same hotel as them and Guitar Wolf!  Thee Rock and Roll Hotel

I had a moosestash!

Very neatly trimmed.  I wouldn't lie to Tom and Jen.

i love this thread.

it's like a thread about Elvis sightings with Elvis contributing and obfuscating--intentionally and unintentionally.

it's like every time there's a funeral on my dad's side of the family.

It was great meeting you.  Or did I?

Who was that finely attired gentleman if not me?

Thanx Scratchbomb for posting the pix & to Matt for relating the story ( i've had very little internet access)!
And Fredericks u are one funny banana.
When SO COW gave a shout -out to Fredericks of New Port Richey a few nights prev, I screamed from the audience as if he gave a shoutout to me
( actually i screamed much louder than if it was a shoutout to me!)
I thought "SO COW are  total TBSOWFMU fans!", not realizing FONPR was actually AT Gonerfest & had been chatting up the bands already!
It was actually Brian SO COW who introduced me to FONPR! Unreal! I met alot of cool FOTS, but there were a bunch i didn't meet coz of the crowds & also i guess trepidation on the parts of various FOT. I know for a fact  that Tom Scharpling loves to meet FOT & won't be mean to u--- unless u have poor social skills ( won't stop talking his ear off, touching him, annoying him, being rude or impolite to him)

Jillian,

What about that movie I was supposed to see?

This is ponderous.

Love,

Fredericks

Ok, I love this thread! Secondly, I think this photo is great. It must have been what it looked/felt like watching the first moon landing, except in color! If somebody is holding back on slightly higher resolution stills please share if you are able. I love the idea of Fonpr meeting up with TS, JB and crew.

Yes except Elvis is still alive. However, Fredericks has been dead for several years...

I suspect Fredericks sighting are actually imposter he set up ala Saddam Hussein...

Perhaps Alex Jones can help us out on this?

I met the guys in So Cow the Tuesday after Goner Fest when they played with Ted Leo in Lawrence, KS. They were very cool guys. Brian gave me a shout out from the stage because he had noticed my Newbridge is for Lovers t-shirt. He told us all about meeting Tom and Jillian and Fredericks and seeing Julie at their Cincinnatti show. After the show, the venue had karaoke. Brian did some Dead Milkmen and Ted Leo did Dio. My friend has a video of Ted doing karaoke, but I don't know if he'd want me to post it.
