I have just returned to the world of comics this month - largely due to the influence of Best Show - after a 20-year hiatus. I'm now the proud owner of several "Tales Designed to Thrizzle"s, the "Five Nightmares" Iron Man collection, and a couple of Casanovas. This has been a HUGELY fun return for me (Michael Kupperman! How did I not know about this?), however, I'm out-of-touch with anything that's happened in comics for last 2 decades.
I'd like to introduce my 7-yr-old daughter to comics, but I have no idea what's good or appropriate for someone her age. She's just getting over the hump with reading (making rapid progress, starting to read on her own for fun), and so I think this is the perfect time to do it.
I'm looking for funny, non-scary, somewhat gross (a little potty humor is okay by me), and hopefully something really creative / kind-of-crazy. If there is a 7-yr-old's equivalent of "Flaming Carrot Comics" (one of my teen years faves), that would be perfect.
Thanks all for any suggestions,
- James

Try giving Jeff Smith's "Bone" a shot. From what I've seen of it this title looks like it could enjoyed by kids and adults. I recently picked up the entire collection and will start on it when I complete Dave Sim's "Cerebus" epic (certainly NOT for kids in that age range) in about mid-December.
I'm not sure if the individual issues of "Bone" are still available, but you can get them compiled in various books. Take your daughter to the library and see if they have them. Even if they don't you still get to spend time with your kid.

There's a big book called "Toon: Classic Children's Comics" (or something like that). It was put together by Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly, and has a wide variety of good kids' comics.
Also: Uncle Scrooge (in general, the Disney comics are better than you might think) and Drawn & Quarterly is doing a series of "Nancy" books, and also "Moomin" which might be a little too old for a 7 year old. But maybe not.
I don't know anyone doing contemporary stuff, but we're enjoying a time when you can get all kinds of classic stuff in nice reprint packages.

Aren't they all?

THE MUPPET SHOW comics are wonderful. The same company (BOOM Studios) also publishes a lot of Disney-Pixar books that I've never read and thus can't vouch for, but THE MUPPET SHOW comics are great.
Marvel also publishes a line called Marvel Adventures that is meant to be kid friendly.

Thanks, all! These sound like great suggestions!

I think Courtney Crumrin is awesome, with words and art by Ted Naifeh. Mouse Guard is worth a look. You'll like them as much or more than your kid, I bet.

I enjoyed the "Bone" books and I would recommend them. They have some great female characters as well. The humor works for both kids and adults.

Francoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman also have another kids line of comics called Little Lit.
James Kochalka offers Owly & Friends and Johnny Boo. Both titles are intended for kids.

Muppet Show and The Marvelous Land of Oz are great. My 10 year old daughter loves them and started reading them around 8 years old.

James Kochalka's "Johnny Boo" books are great and perfect for kids that age.

I actually read Tiny Titans, not gonna lie. It's pretty adorable. And funny! I don't go through an issue without smiling or laughing at least once.

I picked a few releases of this this weekend for my oldest who is starting to like comic books. Thanks.
