Boy, these dessert cookies are melodramatic.
In other cooking show news, Matt Walsh was on the second of last night's Hell's Kitchens.
-
Non sequitur, just because I have to crow about this beyond Chinatown
What did I see from my kitchen window when I got up this morning? This:

Almost that close.
The town was a-buzz.

i agree with the spaz, mayonnaise is GROSS. she's growing on me.
i hate the heather that is left and always have. god, she is stank. such a shitty attitude.
i like zach. whatever. he won me over. kind of love that he doesn't eat real food. haaaaate hate hate his team ~diva~ teammates.
-
I dislike Danielle slightly less than I used to, but I still find her tiresome. Plus she never seems to make anything good. Morgan, on the other hand, often shines in the food department (or so we're told) but comes off as an absolutely loathsome human being. Even when I make allowances for him because he's clearly desperately closeted and thus overcompensating, I still find him repellent.
As for so-called team so-called diva, I grew to like Zac awhile ago, after initially finding his pixie routine tedious. Over the same stretch, I grew to dislike Heather and much as I want to like Yigit--because of his neat name, his good manners, and the fact that I love me an agglutinate language--he seems to be a bit smug.
When it comes down to it, I'm rooting for sad sack Eric, just because so many noses would be put out of joint if he won. And, in the end, as long as Morgan loses, I don't much care.
-
That Morgan guy has to realize he's a PASTRY CHEF, right? All that macho posturing coming from a pastry chef is just insane.
-
I dislike Morgan, too, but I actually cheered when he won the quickfire because it made Heather pissy. I think everything makes her pissy, to be honest though. Twitching bunny rabbit noses probably put her in a bad mood.
-
I like Heather!
I dislike Morgan!
-
I like Heather!
I dislike Morgan!
Wait. What?
-
You heard me!
-
I can see liking Heather. I did, too, till she started getting all snippy and showing signs of being a very poor loser.
I think it's significant that nice Eric chooses to hang out with Team Diva at home, while Danielle gravitates toward Morgan.
-
Agreed. She lost me a little bit when she started to bitch and moan about everything. She should just shut up and be good at making desserts.
-
Yes, she's obviously good at what she does, but she's letting Morgan get under her skin. I'm sympathetic, but I want to give her a smack and tell her to ignore him. Right now, she's doing exactly what he wants. It's one of the ways bullies win.
-
I hated her before Morgan. She was extremely unsympathetic to anyone who showed emotion -- and not just Seth's overblown outbursts, but also Malika and the other Heather.Top Chef is meant to be incredibly stressful, and producers manipulate them so there are tears and fights. The call times are early, and then the judging table can go on until 4 am. I would crack. Let the other people deal with stress in their own way, and don't snipe and judge an passive aggressively shout, "GROW THE FUCK UP!" or whatever just after they leave the room.
Ugh. She just comes off as such a Bitter Betty, and it's not cute.
-
I don't remember her being unsympathetic to Malika, just that she and some others were flabbergasted when Malika said she was ready to go home (this was an episode or two before M. finally did quit). And I seem to recall that the episode when she told Heather to grow the fuck up--an outburst that echoed what I was feeling myself--was the same one when she really started getting furious at Morgan. In the early episodes, I just found her somewhat arrogant but also competent and calm, which for me made up for the ego.
Still, hate her by all means. No skin off my teeth, as someone once said to me.
-
P.S. When it comes down to it, I think they're all awful people. Except maybe Eric.
-
I think that's a statement we can all get behind!
-
I think we can all agree that the percentage of unstable, immature, anti-social wackos is much higher on "Just Desserts" than it is on the regular "Top Chef." To what do you attribute this difference? Is it just a difference in casting? Or does it reflect a personality-type discrepancy between pastry chefs and "chef-chefs" in the real world?
-
It's the first season, the first time pastry chefs have their own show. The producers have probably had a smörgåsbord of wackos to choose from.
-
To what do you attribute this difference?
Sugar!
-
Good point.

My wife is a pastry chef (Three Tarts, Chelsea, NYC, plug over...) and she's appalled and embarrassed by this group. As a long-time Top Chef fan, she was really looking forward to this show and it's become a weekly chore because of the hysterical emotion and borderline personalities. Of course, it's a reality show and everything is heightened, but she feels that this show is taking it to the extreme.
For counterbalance, seek out Kings of Pastry, a documentary by DA Pennebaker about the MOF competition, which portrays pastry chefs as the creative scientists they really are.
Despite these criticisms, we're still watching. We are also big fans of Eric in our household and it's pretty awesome to see him learning how to plate and present week-to-week. While I like the individual members of Team Diva well enough, their clique really bugs me. And Morgan is just an awful person.
-
Oh, I've been to Three Tarts! It's super cute, and please note that I could taste no sign of resentment in the peanut butter cookies I sampled there. Quite the opposite, they were delicious.
-
That guest judge's hair was just ridiculous. She looked like a fraggle.
-
I'm having trouble finding it online so I can't comment. Come to think of it, I don't know what a fraggle looks like, so I won't be able to comment even after I've seen her.

This?

Ah. Yet another reason for me to be annoyed that the episode isn't up anywhere that I can find.
-
Finally watched the episode last night (and saw the hair in question). You must be happy, Laurie.
An uninspired list of random observations:
* Eric's roses truly were much nicer than Heather's.
* Yigit was a big baby about getting some whipped cream on his pants. It's a kitchen: you get dirty.
* I would have loved Danielle's float.
* I was pleased both that Yigit didn't rat Heather out about the pie crust and that she voluntarily took responsibility for it.
* I'm not too fussy about formality in restaurants, but I thought the way Danielle leaned casually on the back of Gail's chair was way too chummy.
* I was happy Eric was on the winning team.
* I loathe Morgan.

This. I hated her whole vibe in the restaurant.

No more nice Eric. Oh well. At least Morgan didn't win the elimination challenge. Congrats to Zac.
Two things:
1. The flowers produced in the quickfire were remarkably ugly. I've seen gorgeous flowers on cooking shows, whether pulled sugar or piped icing. That none of the contestants managed to produce anything pretty surprised me.
2. I found it very odd that Morgan felt compelled to lie to the judges about his inspiration for the elimination challenge. In the supermarket sequence, he says he flipped through a magazine to come up with his couple and then decided what he would make. He then had to rethink his recipes when he found no chocolate in the kitchen. But to the judges he claimsx he came up with his two tea party offerings and then decided on the couple. It was very strange and pointless lie.

I hope you all are voting for Eric for fan favorite.

Do snakes get angry at Thai weddings? He was the most redeeming part of the show, and hopefully the big "reveal" this week will be "surprise, Eric is no longer a contestant but will be staying with us for the remainder of the show!"
-
Chef François, god forbid a dessert should be sweet.
Also, Godiva chocolate is the worst.
And Sylvia and her husband are adorable. I appreciate Sylvia's disdain for fondant. Come on, people, it tastes like a wet necco wafer. Not good.
USE BUTTERCREAM.
GRAY CAKE. WHAT.
-
Anyone that doesn't think Morgan is the greatest is either gay or a woman
Let a man show these girls how to bake a cake
-
Ugh.
-
I'm sick of Morgan in general, but especially all his thinly veiled homophobic comments - about flailing like a girl, showtunes, that time he said the kitchen had too many queens in it, etc.
-
I think Morgan protests too much.
-
Wow, Morgan's comments tonight seal it. He's a homophobic, heterosexist douchebag.
I hope his son joins a show choir.
-
In conclusion: (a) My favorite right now is Yigit, solely because of his great name and, so far, good manners; I don't recall what he made for either challenge. (b) My vote for the contestant most likely to crack and commit mass murder goes to Morgan. Who is bonkers.
-
After Eric was eliminated, I was on Team Anyone But Morgan basically.
-
Yeah, me, too. I even caught myself rooting for Danielle once or twice, when Yigit was being especially pompous. I merely wanted to make all of you take note of my exciting achievement here: one of the only times I have predicted a winner. Could be the last time ever; I'd better revel in the glory of it while I can, nu?
To sum up: I am most pleased Morgan lost.
-
I do love that even Morgan's celebrity sous chef found him insufferable.

Well played, Madam.
-
I blush.
-
Congratulations, Sarah.
And also Yigit.
-
Most of all, congratulations to us all for making it through this season. OOF.
-
I think commiseration and concerns about our sanity might be more in order.
-
I've never watched this show, ever, because I don't get - or didn't get, I have no idea whether I get it now - Bravo. I watched the last two episodes on a Delta flight the other night.
Delta, by the way, getting rid of A&E, Bravo, E! and replacing them with three Fox News channels. Methinks flyover country is having its revenge.
Anyway, the show was interesting, but not enough for me to actually watch.
-
Valuable insight, sir. Many thanks.

Morgan has been indicted on child pornography charges.

After a while, it becomes very difficult to find someone with a history of making homophobic comments who ISN'T messed up sexually. Why doesn't that lead people to stop making them from a sort of "guilt by association" perspective?
-
I have only watched the first part of season one episode one, up until my friend gets kicked off. She was the first to go! Oh no!
