I think we can all agree that the album of the year is Lisbon by the Walkmen. What albums are in the running for second through tenth place?
-
I cast a vote for Admiral Fell Promises by Sun Kil Moon and Have One On Me by Joanna Newsom, though I feel I might be a little lonesome in those choices.
-
Would someone please compile a list for me of everything released this year? Only then can I make my choices.
Make sure you don't miss any or my picks will become moot!
-
Voyagers of Legend by The Young kinda came from out of nowhere and knocked me over. I found it through a recommendation on Andrew Earles's blog, where he calls it the best album of the last five years. I wouldn't go that far, but it is pretty good.
Other releases I liked this year:
Brothers - Black Keys
Brought Low - Third Record
Dungen - Skit I Allt
Ty Segall - Melted
Fucked Up - Year of the Ox
Mount Carmel - s/t
Neil Young - Le Noise
Budos Band - III
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks
Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2 (technically a comp but it was all new to me, so I'm including it)
Best standup album of the year has to be Shakespeare by Anthony Jeselnik.
-
Of the very little new music I've listened to this year, I've liked the Intelligence and Eddy Current Suppression Ring albums.
I look forward to being educated by this thread and the invaluable end-of-the-year list by Evan 'Funk' Davies.

-
I am going to have to agree with Janelle Monae, at least so far.

Grinderman - Grinderman 2
Haven't listened to this one enough yet but I think it's some of his best work in years.

I think the Janelle Monae album is pretty amazing, but also very frustrating. For me, the 'rock songs' (for lack of a better word; my apologies to all rockers) completely ruin the flow of the album. They are almost unlistenable to me. Of course, I'm saying this as someone who is pretty much allergic to rock and/or roll.
Contenders:
Eluvium - Similes
Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers
Actress - Splazsh
Scuba - Triangulation
Seu Jorge and Almaz
Four Tet - There Is Love in You
Shockingly I haven't gotten my hands on the Flying Lotus yet.

Yeah, I always skip the Of Montreal song. Don't have a problem with any of the other ones.

Did you sour on Strong Arm Steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson or simply overlook it in the above list?

I overlooked it - it's definitely up there - that list was off the top of my head (not braggin').

I skip the Of Montreal song as well, and I can't stand the one shortly before it whose name I can't remember ("that's when we come ALIIIIVE").

Quasi – American Gong [KRS]
Superchunk – Majesty Shredding [Merge]
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists – The Brutalist Bricks [Matador]
Ty Segall – Melted [Goner]
These would be my top four right now (likely order: Quasi, Ty Segall, Ted Leo, Superchunk), though there are still a few things I need to listen to more/at all.
Favorite song of the year right now would be a heat between Ty Segall's "Sad Fuzz" and TL's "Bottled Up In Cork". Quasi, as they have been every time I've seen them for the last 12 or so years, were the best live act I saw this year.
I like the Janelle Monae album a lot. It's fun to have something out there that weird, with it's The Love Below vs. '76-'80 ELO vs. John Barry Orchestra vs. Wizard of Oz vs. Metropolis messy aspirations. I kind of advise listening to it while drifting in and out of sleep for maximum "How did I get here?" impact.
Big Boi "Sir Lucious Left Foot..."
Show some respect to Chico Dusty.

Pretty much everything in the Madlib Medicine Show series is completely bonkers and enjoyable and is kinda redefining what it means to be an underground hip hop beat nerd because it just goes everywhere -- Tropicalia, fusion jazz, reggae, Afrobeat, disco-era soul, his own archival pre-Lootpack-era beats, etcetera. The one he did with a bunch of psych-rock and Firesign Theater bits (#6 -- The Brain Wreck Show) is something else.
-
Much as I've tried, I haven't been able to keep up with all the Medicine Show releases. Too overwhelming.

If it makes you feel better, neither has Madlib -- #9 has been postponed for undisclosed reasons.
Also, the Flying Lotus is effing excellent.

I was really excited for #10 - Black Soul, but it didn't quite live up to my high expectations.
-
I have not even come close to listening to a representative sample of stuff that came out this year, even by bands I really like (e.g.: I think Ty Seagall is awesome and he was super-nice the one time I met him, and absolutely everyone I know who has heard Melted loves it, but some some reason I haven't listened to it yet). But I enjoyed all of the following:
Pernice Brothers - Goodbye Killer
TL/Rx - The Brutalist Bricks
JEFF The Brotherhood - Heavy Days
Gil-Scott Heron - I'm New Here
Superchunk - Majesty Shredding
Hannibal Burress - My Name Is Hannibal
Boston Spaceships - Our Cubehouse Still Rocks
Robert Pollard - Moses on a Snail
The Len Price 3 - Pictures
Das Racist - Shut Up, Dude
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
Love Is All - Two Thousand and Ten Injuries
Adam Warrock - The West Coast Avengers Mixtape
If we're including reissues:
Ozzie - The Parabolic Rock 1975-1982
Various - Nigeria Afro-Beat
The L.A. Gemstones Box that Ian posted here
-
Arcade Fire is my album of the year so far but for a pick that hasn't been mentioned I'd go with Jeremy Messersmith- The Reluctant Graveyard.
-
Albums that might make my list, but I've only listened to once or twice
Black Milk - Album of the Year
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
The Fresh & Onlys - Play It Strange
Tindersticks - Falling Down A Mountain
Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here?
-
Bottomless Pit "Blood Under the Bridge"--sorta a runaway here.
.22 "Pity" ep--the single most underrated rock band, ever.
The Bismarck "Great Plains"--astounding, loose, great rock music. Makes me proud to be from ND.
Technically this came out LAST YEAR, but I think Jon Solomon released it, digitally, this year, but Tre Orsi's "Devices + Emblems" is the best album I've heard in years. The only competition is Ladyhawk's "Shots".
WAITING/JURY'S OUT:
Nina Nastasia's "Outlaster"--the best at what she does, but I think it needs to be snowy for me to appreciate this album.
Shipping New's new one--I'll get it next week!
Shannon Wright's new one--hopefully the same!
-
So far at this Moogfest thing, AFK has seen the following bands.
Dan Deacon (ambient set)
Kuroma
Big Boi
MGMT
Dan Deacon (dance set)
Girl Talk
Mountain Man
Nosaj Thing
School of Seven Bells (his second favorite so far)
Jonsi (his favorite; it may have even been life-changing, apparently)
Thievery Corporation
Alex B
Massive Attack
Disco Biscuits
Four Tet
His plan for tonight is to try to get into Shout Out Out Out, Sleigh Bells, Neon Indian, and Hot Chip.
I am sure we will own music by most of these artists his next payday.
-
I'm in agreement with much of what is being listed here, especially Four Tet, which I didn't realize was that popular. The one that I don't see and jumps out at me to also include is Vampire Weekend's Contra.
-
Well, "The Monitor" is surely the best of the four or five 2010 releases I have heard.
-
New addition: Strychnine Dandelion by the Parting Gifts (Greg Cartwright/ Coco Hames off of the Ettes) is really wonderful. But when has Greg C ever taken his eye off the ball?
-
I wouldn't place it at number one, but I feel like David Byrne's "Here Lies Love" might make my top ten.
-
Some albums not mentioned:
Dead C - PATIENCE
The Limes - RHINESTONE RIVER
Teenage Fanclub - SHADOWS
Cheap Time - FANTASTIC EXPLANATIONS (AND SIMILAR SITUATIONS)
Harlan T Bobo - SUCKER
Personal & The Pizzas - RAW PIE
Magic Kids - MEMPHIS
Fresh & Onlys - PLAY IT STRANGE
Eddy Current Suppression Ring - RUSH TO RELAX
Pleasure Kills - BRING ME A MATCH
White Hills - S/T
John Wesley Coleman - BAD LADY GOES TO JAIL
The Intelligence - MALES
UV Race - S/T
Goodnight Loving - GOODNIGHT LOVING SUPPER CLUB
Reissues/comps:
Syl Johnson - COMPLETE MYTHOLOGY
V/A - Daddy Rockin' Strong: A Tribute to Nolan Strong & The Diablos
David Bowie - STATION TO STATION reissue
Dexys Midnight Runners - SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
The Stooges - RAW POWER 2-disc edition
Fucked Up - COUPLE TRACKS
That album by The Young sounds really interesting. I ordered a copy; I can't wait to hear it. I also went ahead and ordered the new Tyvek and Parting Gifts albums from In the Red. Greg Cartwright never disappoints, so that one'll probably go in the Top 5 by the end of the year.
Of course I have to echo the love for Ted Leo, Superchunk, Ty Segall, Madlib, Titus Andronicus, etc. Extra love to Robert Pollard, who's having a pretty unbelievable hot streak, in my opinion. OUR CUBEHOUSE STILL ROCKS was probably his best since FROM A COMPOUND EYE.
-
It'd be too hard for me to think of all the albums this year that I really liked because there were a lot of 'em.
so here's a list of live shows that were great:
1/5/10 - ROT SHIT, HOME BLITZ, DRUNKDRIVER, Blues (snooze) Control
Eddy Current Suppression Ring at cake shop w/ PISSED JEANS and HOME BLITZ
UV Race and Total Control at the Acheron
birds of maya in philly on my 21st birthday
SXSW: trailer space in shop personal and the pizzas, white wires/ playpinball house show w/ ty segall, moonhearts, terrible twos
A FRAMES at DBA
nobunny and the spits at knitting factory in bklyn
Gentleman Jesse and his Men/ King Khan and the Shrines in Princeton and Bklyn (princeton notable for my friends leaving me there alone and ending up playing tetris and hanging out with the bands)
new brunswick shows of note:
Ted Leo solo
HOMOSTUPIDS/WATERY LOVE
This Moment in Black History
big eyes/burger records showcase
yet to come:
GBV this weekend, pollution/neon blud -- UNHOLY 2, Tyvek + Terrible Twos + Timmy's Organism
-
Spurred on in part by this thread, I eMusiced Melted, The Suburbs, and ArchAndroid. Melted and ArchaAndriod are fantastic. The Suburbs is pretty good -- I like Arcade Fire OK, but I don't think they're the second coming of Bowie or Eno or whoever they're supposed to be the second coming of. But I'm not in the hater camp, either -- they don't sound like warmed-over U2 to me.
-
I just don't get Arcade Fire.
-
Like most bands, Arcade Fire have a handful of good songs: Neighborhood #3 (Power Out), No Cars Go, Haiti, Keep the Car Running, The Well and the Lighthouse (based on my iTunes ratings, which tend to correspond to immediately catchy songs).
But hell, plenty of other buzzbands have a pile of even better songs. So while I'm not going to say they suck in the way that lots of the hyped bands of the early 2000s who were terrible and had no redeeming value whatsoever, I really don't get the attention.
Also, I saw them live with another Now band, LCD Soundsystem, at Red Rocks. I thought they were terrible live. The music had no pizzazz. Meanwhile LCD Soundsystem were great. My friends all thought differently.
On topic, I think Halcyon Digest was really good. Deerhunter are very good. And about half of the songs on the recent/last album by the aforementioned LCD Soundsystem are also very good.
I was going to rebuke this board because no one has mentioned Sacrificium: the Music of the Castrati by Cecilia Bartoli, but apparently that came out last year so I'll just check that thread.
-
Maybe I have pedestrian tastes, but the Arcade Fire are a great band. I haven't seen them live, but I don't care too much about that, I mostly care about who can put out good albums and they haven't let me down yet.
-
No one has mentioned the Best Coast album yet.
It is pretty fantastic.

I've heard a lot of people hating on it. Seeing them live before Titus Andronicus didn't really make me want to check it out.

I should mention I do like some songs on the Best Coast album, but in spite of the lyrics, which really are atrociously lazy. Lazier than the top 40 mall pop a lot of its defenders would slag off. Indie bubblegum has truly arrived.

Interference - s/t
It's so damn awesome. I have a tape of the original 1982 recordings/rehearsals and am glad that this was finally released.
-
'ghost blonde' by no joy is pretty fantastic!
-
I don't expect it to make many people's lists, but I quite like Bryan Ferry's Olympia. Bit of a return to form for the old sleaze.
And guess who plays bass on it? I think you can!

Roberto Alomar?

No, Dude, Flea. Flea's on it!
He was also in that PBS Patti Smith documentary. Does he have the same agent as Sheryl Crow or what?

definitely this one for me.. really wonderful.

I definitely wouldn't call the Best Coast record one of the best of 2010 but there's something likable about it for me. I actually find the lyrics pretty hilarious. I mean she can't be serious. This girl REALLY needs a date.
I do love, love, loooove "Inner Speaker" by Tame Impala. Fuzz out the wazoo. And it's got a kind of lazy, strung-out quality to it that I seem to be a sucker for. Combine that with the heavy fuzz sound and nice melodies and I end up listening to it almost every day.
-
I would second these nominations:
Screaming Females "Baby Teeth"
Baby Teeth came out in '06 (maybe it was re-released this year). Singles came out this year, though. Marissa's solo project Noun released Holy Hell this year. I'd vote for that as a top 5.
My discovery of the 2010 would be Kate Bush's 1985 masterpieceHounds Of Love. AMAZING!!!
Oh, and I called The Brutalist Bricks the 2010 album of the year last December. It's the only album that matters this year.
-

Revised to remove the "*"s, which previously indicated albums on the list that I had not actually heard*, and include some additional recordings (in GREEN/RED GLOW).
