Tim K's post about Bonaduce got me thinking: The Kid certainly has some talent doing voices! Dane Cook, Little Steven, the guy at the security desk...
Any favorites come to mind?
-
I love Tom's perma-tanned Staten Island Guy.
-
1. Tom impersonating/doing an impression of an average caller to the Mike and the Mad Dog show on WFAN is hilarious to me.
2. Tom doing an impression of a typical Top 40 DJ is kinda funny.
3. The show from several years ago where Tom goes after Wurster's "Cheetah" character was hilarious to me.
-
Tom's Robin Williams impression stuck with me for a long time, refering to him hounding the UCB theater. It was just one sentance, but it was suprising and hilarious.
Also, Tom's Kevin Smith impression while discussing the Evening with Kevin Smith 2 DVD. It was oddly accurate without sounding very much like him at all.
UNFUN FACT: When I heard my first* clip of the best show, it was around the same time Kevin Smith had went and done a one-off radio show, that me and my friends made fun of a lot without actually listening to it. When my friend sent me the clip, my first reaction was that I thought it was Kevin Smith's radio show, and that poor sound quality messed with Kevin's voice (The clip was of mac getting told to get off tom's phone). I remember being suprised that Kevin Smiths radio show was actually funny.
*UNFUN FOOTNOTE: Actually, the first time I heard the Best Show was listening to Petey's Aqua Teen Hunger Force interview, and I honestly thought Tom was Petey's dad and this was some kinda radio show they did from their house. I just imagined a guy at his kitchen computer and his son calling from his bedroom, because for some reason thats the only way they can make it work. As I got more into the show I was suprised it was the same show I'd heard years before.
-
How dare you insult this wonderful high school radio show by insinuating that it was done by some guy from his house?! High schools are at least .75 steps up the radio ladder from some guy's house.
(interrobang)
-
Mimiking their voice is not Tom's forte. Rather, it is how he captures their character.
1. Judge Elihu Smails from Caddyshack (he's been perfecting this one for a long time)
2. Dom DeLuise aka Captain Chaos from Cannonball Run ("What if HIM shows up?")
3. The Gas Station Attendant/Tom Waits Fan ("Hey, man")
4. Spike (Okay, he does nail the voice for this one.)
-
I loved his Dante and Randall voices during his Clerks II takedown.
-
I know someone else asked this question on the old board and I can't remember if it ever was answered. What show was it where Tom imitated a musical style for each decade of the 20th century?
-
Tom's impression of Ben Gazzara during the Road House episode (July 20, 2004) was on the money.
-
It's got no heart. It's Wilco!
-
The English Music Hall bits:
* reviewing Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
* Singing "That's All" to John from Maplewood (recovering Genesis fan)
And kind of in the same ballpark, his unfair record review of Modern Times where he red-lines Dylan's creeping Leon Redbonisms. ("I don't care what you SEAY")
-
When Tom Scharpling impersonated me! He did it once when I sent in the now famous* Get Off My Bone song and again when he made fun of me on the Halloween episode. Also, the Dante and Randall had me gasping.
*NOT SO FAMOUS
-
Does Tom doing an 'impression' of a Canadian apologizing ("I'm sore-y") count? A great GOMP ala hostile phone call from the North comes to mind.
-
My brother started saying "sore-y" a couple of years ago. We grew up in Miami. What's up with that? Too much Degrassi during our formative years?
-
The Peter Griffin one was last week left me breathless.
-
I could listen to Tom's Petey all day long, and the Hesh/generic drunk hits the mark, too.
-
his Nick Nolte from Ang Lee's Hulk
and his Tony Soprano is spot on
-
come on you guys are missing the funniest one. When Tom impersonates Petey is just priceless. Every time he says Faffer makes me laugh
-
Yah, I missed it about 40 minutes before you mentioned it. PSYCH!
-
thats what happens when I post all blurry eyed and half awake my bad
-
Just a joshin' Bruce. I am delighted to find somebody agree with me on something, after word for out about how pedestrian my taste in music is.
-

go look at my last FM playlist. I'm with you somewhat.

Geez, get a room already.
-
The Peter Griffin one was last week left me breathless.
I second this one.
"It's kinda like that time when..."
"That reminds me of that time when..."
"Remember that time when..."
"What about that time when..."
-
Tom's very quick Dana Snyder impression from his talk with Paul F. about Petey's intervention had me laffin it up.
-
i was gonna say Petey also
-
Spike.
-
Harrison Ford:
"Get off my plane!" "Give me back my family!" slays me.
-
Harrison Ford:
"Get off my plane!" "Give me back my family!" slays me.
"Give me back my sandwich!" is classic
-
The Petey impressions were also the first thing that came to mind. I'm also gonna say his brief stint as Chubby Checker was mesmerizing (and seemingly a propos of nothing).
I also like when he puts a filter on his voice, and pretends to be some lunkhead WFMU caller who keeps interrupting a real caller. The longer the caller doesn't realize it's Tom, the funnier it gets.
-
Harrison Ford:
"Get off my plane!" "Give me back my family!" slays me.
"Give me back my sandwich!" is classic
Oh yeah, how could I forget that? That might have been the line that hooked me. I just started saying it around the house, to the bafflement of my wife.
-
I'm gonna have to agree with Dave on this one. Tom's 'generic drunk guy' gets me everytime.
-
Nobody does one and Tom's is spot-on.
Judge Smails is my 2nd fave.
-
All this Harrison Ford talk reminded me of this painting.
Check the website for more goodies....

Take special note of "Leisure time with Henry Rollins" in the illustrations section.
(I think he was doing paintings of Chuck Norris before all those "jokes" where making the rounds)

He definitely was. I'm usually not much for the pop culture-inspired art, but those Law & Order: Special Valentines Unit cards are great.

-
Those two FWDs from Clerks. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=FxEYO5RS1TY)
-
He really seems to enjoy taking people who obviously aren't familiar with the show on a ride
the less familiar the further out he takes it.
That's some of the best audience interaction IMO
-
Maybe I don't really get it because I am Canadian, but is saying sore-y some sort of thing? What do you guys say, saw-ry?
-
Maybe I don't really get it because I am Canadian, but is saying sore-y some sort of thing? What do you guys say, saw-ry?
We're from New Jersey, so we never apologize.
-
It's lazier than that, like
SAH ree
Unless you're down south and you want to convey sarcasm, and then it comes out
saw REE
-
Instead of saw-ree or sore-ree I usually say, "Well exc-you-oo-se me!" like Steve Martin used to did ....
... because I'm a tool.
-
hahahahaaaa.... ok. thanks folks.
ps.
I too am a fan of the drunk impression!
-
1. Isabelle Sanford
2. Spike
3. Judge Smails
4. Southerners (there's one episode where he either does a southern politician or a lawyer and its hilarious.)
-
I like the Long Island guy.
-
Super Dave.
-
Super Dave.
After last night, I would have to agree. That was part of the reason I kept pushing the Super Dave angle. Before the show, Tom did a longer Super Dave impression that was absolutely hysterical. I think I'm going to have to start wearing a wire to the show because Tom is just as funny before the show even starts.
-
the one-man cast of Entourage.
Also, "Give me back my Crystal Skull!"
-
Going through some early 04 archives, I think I found my favorite Tom impersonation (or in this case personification) of all time...
TOBLERONE BAR!
Gave me chills.
-
Tone-Loc.
"I'm gonna teach you how to rap, dawg..."
-
February 20, 2007: 2:07 Paul Stanley. http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=22150&archive=33424
Solid!
-
Tom's kickball being kicked last night was really good I thought
-
Tom does the best Harrison Ford impression I've heard. I'm actually surprised they casted Shia LeBouf for the new Indiana Jones movie over Tom. There's no way Shia would be able to stand up to Harrison Ford the way Tom would.
-
His Truman Capote kills me.
-
I could listen to Tom's Petey all day long, and the Hesh/generic drunk hits the mark, too.
Wait, when was I drunk?
-
You're kidding, right?
I could listen to Tom's Petey all day long, and the Hesh/generic drunk hits the mark, too.
Wait, when was I drunk?
-
I thought it couldn't get any better than the Nicholas Cage impression, but after listening to the latest archive, I now know Tom can pull off a pitch-perfect Neil Hamburger.
-
I now know Tom can pull off a pitch-perfect Neil Hamburger.
Absolutely! Tom should go on the road as Hamburger II.
-

Absolutely! Tom should go on the road as Hamburger II.
Yes, he should. I'll volunteer to be half of Canned Ham II.
-
Harrison Ford:
"Get off my plane!" "Give me back my family!" slays me.
Hearing Tom do Harrison Ford starts off a chain of logic in my brain that can only end in Harrison Ford doing comedy film. He would get my money, just as an experiment alone!
-
One of P.F.T.'s best impressions: http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=24689&archive=38013&starttime=1:44:35 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=24689&archive=38013&starttime=1:44:35)
LISTEN TO IT!

Kenkwan, did you mean Canned Hamm - the two-man dance party machine that have toured with Neil Hamburger? Lil' Hamm's a good friend of mine and a super creative guy.
-
the one-man cast of Entourage.
Ari : *on a cellphone* "NahNahnahnahnahnahnahNahNahNahnahNah"!
-
Tom's "Give me back my (anything)" is genius. His Harrison Ford impersonations are some of my favorite moments of the show. Yesterday I was listening to the show where he read an interview with that Maroon 5 twat and thought his voicings were hilarious.
-
I like the voice he gave Chris Klein when he read a magazine interview on the 12/13/05 show.
-

My question is: Did Harrison Ford ever actually utter those words in a movie? I know Mel Gibson did in "Ransom" (see below).

I know it doesn't really matter, but the question has been gnawing at me.
Thanks, fellow FOT's. (Or is it F'sOT? Yet another question that has been gnawing at me.)
-
It's FOT.
-

Do you order 15 Tacos Supreme and 10 Whoppers Junior for lunch and then take them back to the conference of State Attorneys General and Sergeants Major?
Also, I am of the school that a lower-case s, without an apostrophe, suffices to pluralize an abbreviation.
E.g.: CDs, DVDs.

Yes!

date=1205002832]Do you order 15 Tacos Supreme and 10 Whoppers Junior for lunch and then take them back to the conference of State Attorneys General and Sergeants Major?
You should. Especially if you want to make everybody sick.
-

I was kinda kidding about the F'sOT thing. I shoulda known not to make a silly comment like that on the William Safire Prescriptive Linguist's Discussion Board. ;D
-Doctor Whom
-
In the "Best Show Dreams" thread, Sarah used "FOT" for the plural form as well. I like that.
-One of many FOT
-
Do you order 15 Tacos Supreme and 10 Whoppers Junior for lunch and then take them back to the conference of State Attorneys General and Sergeants Major?
Yes!
-
I'm a little worried about what those attorneys general and sergeants major were discussing at that conference. And I dread to think how their consumption of that disgusting food affected the proceedings.
-
I'm still in the Don Imus camp. I laughed so hard at that voice/noise thing. Does anyone know which show that was? It was pretty recent, I think.. maybe late fall?
-
Tom's Jim Morrison was pretty great.
-
Not an impersonation as such...
But during the Wilco unfair record review...
"...off to school, it's my first day of school and you know i'm gonna..."
-
Ghoulish guy! Oh man... I laughed so hard.
-
It was a short one but liked his conversation between Ty Cobb and Jay Davis.
-
I think Judge Smails is a given...the dark horse for best impersonation is Morton Downey Jr. He channels the hatred and smoky voice of Mr. Downey Jr. whenever he says "You shut your mouth."
-
Ghoulish guy! Oh man... I laughed so hard.
That was a good one. A shame that it was happening on a call while I am still nervous about calling.
-
Anthony Hopkins! It was only one sentence (during the "ghoul-esque" guy), but holy cats!
-
I finally heard this week's episode today on the podcast, and yes it was genius. I too enjoyed the Ghoul voice over five minutes. "You sound like a jerk, get off my phone!"
-
That was awesome. I'm drinkin' a beer in my bedroom. Go ghoulish guy voice!
-
This week's "jug from the 13th Floor Elevators" impression was perfect.
-
His Martin Scorcese still cracks me up.
-
Anthony Hopkins! It was only one sentence (during the "ghoul-esque" guy), but holy cats!
You're going to have to pretend to be your brothah!
-

I know it doesn't really matter, but the question has been gnawing at me.
I don't think he's ever said that exactly but he has said these things (most likely in that voice):
"When do I get my family back?"
"You got your job back."
"So that's the plan? You think your techie schoolboy friend can hack into my mainframe?"
"You get the money when I get my family! "
"GET OFF MY PLANE!"
"DON'T ASK ME FOR SOMETHING I CAN'T GIVE YOU!"
"I didn't sign up for this."
"I'm here to rent the Huey."
"I didn't kill my wife."
"I am telling you I want back in!"
"I'm not after your job, Marty. I'm after the man who tried to kill my family."
"Got anything against zippers?"
"How do I look - I mean, do I look Amish?"
"Whacking. I'm hell at whacking."
-
Richard Dreyfuss from "What About Bob?": "And he can borrow my slicker!"
-
Richard Dreyfuss from "What About Bob?": "And he can borrow my slicker!"
That was beautiful! The second highest point of last night's show.
#1 was "Mike says he wrote a book called 'Bleah Bleah.'"
-

YES!

Someone already said it, but I just heard the episode so I'll say it again:
Chubby Checker

Yes, it's the 4/6/04 episode. He does the first hour or so of the show as Chubby Checker.
-
a cat.

Larry Flynt
-
Larry Flynt
The best part of this was Tom's moment of shame afterwards.
-
True, but the very short impression was dead on
-
His impression of a Norwegian tourist marveling at Kevin Smith landmarks in NJ was incredible.
-
George Carlin.
A Theremin.
-
theremin was pretty sweet.
I'm looking forward to hearing Tom dust off his Harrison Ford voice when he (inevitably) trashes the new movie
-
Super Dave
"What's wrong with you, Larry? What's wrong with you? You idiot. You're an idiot."
-
yeah he knocked it outta the park with the super dave impression.
(PS - i have to agree with mike about it being genius that he's on curb your enthusiasm)
-
two recent faves, both very quick:
-Richard Dreyfus being held captive by a crazed fan
-Professor Falken from Wargames (http://www.gtwebdesign.org/~tnguyen/wargame/index.html)
-
A Paddy Chayefsky movie.

i'm still waiting for his rocksteady impression.
-
A carbon-monoxide detector.
-
From the 2001 show recently re-podcasted: a Zappa song.
-
From last week's show: bebop.
Yes!
I wouldn't be surprised if bringing up that orchestra pit article was just a vehicle for a few avante garde mouth-solos
-
A race riot breaking out at a screening of Rocky III.
February 12, 2002, about 2:05.15 in…
-
After the brief example on last night's show, I kinda need to hear a Scharpling Audio Book edition of Watchmen with Tom's Dante and Randall, and maybe his Chubby Checker, Gandolfini and Hulk Hogan voices filling out the cast. His James voice would be the perfect Rorschach.
-
After the brief example on last night's show
Tom pretending to be the guy reading from the menu...it doesn't get much better in my book.
Or is this an example of a reenactment? Rather, an impersonation. Rather still, an impression. my head hurts.
-
Gandolfini
When was this?
-
Harrison Ford:
"Get off my plane!" "Give me back my family!" slays me.
Yeah, I was loving the 'Harrison Ford Ringtones'.
-
His Billy Bob Thorton was great.
-
Also on last night's show ... he did a great Marc Bolan/T-Rex vocal (at about 1:07 on the archive).
-
Paul Giamatti
-
Tonight's episode -- Russell Brand & Seth Rogen
-
From last week, Jake McCain.
-
starbucks complainer.
-
Seth Rogen
-
Dante from Clerks as Rorschach.
-
Pete Seeger and Tom Waits having a conversation, from the "Best Show Laws" night.
"Help me Pete!"
-
I find Tom's Jackie Gleason from "Smokey and the Bandit" to be both hilarious and frightening at the same time.
"Yes daddy, no daddy, turn right daddy..."
"Get me a Diablo sandwich and a Dr. Pepper..."
-
Tom's portrayal of Yankees Stadium as the Mos Eisley Cantina
-
When he did Shop For A Coffin Guy (is that ghoulish guy?) right after he hung up on him i was dying. perhaps i should have been shopping for a coffin (ba-da tishhhh! barrroooooooooommmmm) ew bouey.
-
Eddie Vedder
-
Billy Corgan.
-
When did this happen? Meaning at what time...
-
Dr. John
-
Papa Roach.
"Jim Beam, dude!"
-
Papa Roach.
"Jim Beam, dude!"
That was a sad, yet inspiring, story.
If Tom can bounce back from such depths, surely we can all get past whatever's vexing us at the moment.
-
BWE announcer Larry Kenney (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0448489/)

scott weiland was great. i love the rock star voice.
-
Before the show, Tom did a longer Super Dave impression that was absolutely hysterical. I think I'm going to have to start wearing a wire to the show because Tom is just as funny before the show even starts.
I am digging through old stuff..... There is a lesson to be learned.
See above quote. Who has a show for two weeks two years later?
Signed,
Now I Get It
in New Port Richey
-
Macho Man keeps popping in my head since he first started doing it. But I will always love his jazz impression (or any time he does a trumpet.) Always makes me laugh.
-
A year or two ago, Tom did an impersonation of two old men at a pizza parlor. "You can get anything!"
It made me giggle uncontrollably then, and it still makes me laugh.
-
The Mike Francesa bit from a number of months ago. I have never heard Mike or the Mad Dog in reality, so I have no idea how accurate it was. It was just after Francesa had apparently left the show for greener pastures, and Tom's ridiculous phrasings -- 'You guys meant ta me everyting...' -- interspersed with wet sobs... pure gold.
-
Just to address the question in the title of this thread, which has been nagging at me for months:
I'm pretty sure it's "impression." Isn't "impersonation" when you are actually trying to convince others that you are the person in question? Whereas an impression is an imitation for the purpose of entertainment or amusement?
-
Tom's "Michael Richards" was uncanny!
-
Tom's "Michael Richards" was uncanny!
I agree, but it made me think of Ronald Reagan.

I think you're right. They don't call them 'Female Impressionists'.
-
tom's harmonica impression is truly great

This episode was playing when the cable guy was over yesterday and he is now a subscriber to the podcast!

Tom's Sam Elliott in his Road House redux is superb. His Ben Gazzara is great too.
